Columbarium: or, the pigeon-house. Being an introduction to a natural history of tame pigeons. (with) an account of some medicines prepar’d by John Moore apothecary.

      J. Wilford, London 1735 - 8vo. xiv, 80 pp. Contemporary speckled calf. A most beautirul copy in superb condition FIRST EDITION OF A GREAT RARITY - ONE OF A HANDFUL KNOWN OF THE ORIGINAL PRINTED COPY. Complete, with the medical section of this pioneering study of pigeons. "With a partiality usually shewn to the victor, the Hawk has engaged the pen of many a writer: But his Prey . . . has scarce met with that" (dedication to Sir William Stapleton, Baronet). This is the "earliest English work giving a description of the different varietie of the domestic pigeon" (Casey Wood). Accordingly, Moore (d. 1737), well known for his worm powder which cures ailments including scurvy, measles, the King’s Evil, Sciatica, cholick, and much more, is considered the pre-eminent of all pigeon fanciers. Among some of the topics the author treats is the method of building a loft, the generation and breeding of pigeons, identification of various types of pigeons, their diet, their usefulness and their dung. Of special interest is his chapter on carrier pigeons. He was not only a very judicious fancier, but a gentlemen (chemist) who spared no pain to make himself acquainted with the diseases of these birds and to apply the best methods of cure. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century Moore’s treatise was copied line by line and page by page, though loaded with errors. It was reissued with a new introduction by W.B. Tegetmeier, the leading authority on pigeons who "introduced Darwin to the institutions of the fancy, took him to shows, and answered numerous queries in correspondence" (OBNB). In 1868 Tegetmeier wrote "there is no accurate reprint of Moore’s Columbarium. Matthew Eaton’s 1852 treatise on pigeons was a "cut up copy of Moore with additional erratic notes by Eaton." He also pointed out that John Mayor (pseud. of Daniel Girton) in 1765 plagiarized (or as he put it "cabbaged") and basically copied Moore. He was surprised that Mayor "did not have a little more candour or honour in acknowledging Moore." Apparently no one could find an original copy, suggesting there was only one or two printed. Most writers on the subject acknowledged that they did not know whether more than one copy of this work even existed. It was also noted in the Journal of Horticulture and Cottage Gardner, October 24, 1865, Volume XXXIV, page 350, that finding a copy of the original took Eaton a few years, a great deal of money, and when he finally found a copy, "he had to bribe the fancier."The story goes that apparently Moore was timid, and had little cash. With the few copies unsold his wife used to light their fire. Much of the research on this work is concerned with the history of finding an original copy such as we offer here.OCLC locates 5 copies in America, of which only 3 have the full 80 pages; British Museum Catalogue notes 4 copies, though only 1 has the full 80 pages; Casey Wood, p. 471 [Attributes: First Edition]

(Jacques Duprilot in Éros invaincu).

Shipwreck off the Cape and gruelling overland March to Mozambique. 1625 [eighteenth-century counterfiet edtion, ca. 1735]. Lisbon. Pedro Craesbeeck [i.e. António Pedroso Galrão?]. In 4to (190 mm x 140 mm). 2 ff. + 5-95 pp. Manuscript foliation, "17-64" in upper outer corner of the recto of each leaf; text block edges rouged, scattered small foxing spots, else a fine copy.Second [?] edition; a counterfeit of the 1625 Craesbeeck edition -also included in Gomes de Brito's Historia tragico-maritima. The Sao Joao Baptista sailed from Goa on March 1, 1622. In July, after its companion ship disappeared near the Cape of Good Hope, two Dutch ships attacked the Sao Joao. Following a vicious 19-day battle she finally escaped, rudderless and battered, and drifted northward until the sailors managed to beach her at about 33° South. In early November the 279 survivors decided to attempt to reach Mozambique on foot. Vaz de Almada describes their battles with the Kaffirs, their desperate struggles to find food, and the fate of those who became too weak to keep up with the group. The captain attempted to maintain his authority by arbitrary beheading and hanging; in at least one case, the survivors ate the bodies of those executed. Vaz de Almada, elected leader after the captain's death near Lourenço Marques, showed considerable prudence but could not avoid the attack of over a thousand Kaffirs, who took what possessions the shipwreck victims still had and left them to stagger naked into Ponta da Barra (about 24° South). There a Portuguese ship from Sofala finally collected 32 survivors in August 1623.The 18 shipwreck narratives that make up the @História trágico-marítima are now recognized as literary masterpieces as well as invaluable historical sources.  "Written almost invariably with utmost frankness, and with an almost complete absence of literary artificiality and conceits, these narratives bring vividly before us the dangers and discomforts of life aboard the overcrowded and overloaded East-India carracks" (Boxer, p. 92). They are also of great importance for the ethnography of the South African Bantu before they came into close contact with Europeans. According to Duffy (p. 144), Vaz de Almada's account gives the most thorough description of the tribes along the coast.Boxer, An Introduction to the História Trágico-Marítima, pp. 80-2. Seba's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is the result of a life time dedicated to research and study. Although it was common for apothecaries to collect natural specimens, Seba's collection was exceptional even his day, including many strange and unusual species, many of which are extinct today. Seba commissioned the four volume work himself, incorporating plants and animals on single plates, as well as fantastic beasts, such as the hydra and dragons.

The Hierarchical Skimington: or a Representation of the Ambitious and Arbitrary Views of a Party.

London Sold by B.Dickenson at Inigo Jones's Head 1735 - Broadside, engraved oblong folio, couple of short cross tears neatly repaired, printed one side as issued. A satire on the State and the High Church Party. It shows a long procession containing amongst others many Jesuits winding their way towards Canterbury. A Skimington was a ludicrous cavalcade. In this satire the Church is the Termagant Wife, the State the hen-pecked husband, and the whole is intended to ridicule the pretensions ascribed to the High Church party, which is here particularly represented by Bishop Gibson.
