An Enquiry into the Ideas of Space, Time, Immensity, and Eternity; As also the Self-Existence, Necessary Existence, and Unity of the Divine Nature; In Answer to a Book lately Publish'd by Mr. Jackson, entitled, The Existence and Unity of God proved from his Nature and Attributes. To which is added, A Dissertation upon the Argument a Priori for proving the Existence of a First Cause. By a Learned Hand.

Printed by W. Fenner and R. Beresford for W. Thurlbourn, Cambridge 1734 - 1 blank leaf + half title + TP + [1]-196 + [1]-98 + [99] = publisher's ads + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First Edition. An 18th Century Speculation on Space and Time - Refuting Samuel ClarkeLaw was a crucial figure in the revival of philosophical inquiry in Cambridge during the twenty years after his graduation in 1723. From a philosophical point of view his main target was Samuel Clarke, already under suspicion since his views on the Trinity were regarded as unorthodox. Further, his supposing that the laws of nature could be deduced a priori could be seen as denigrating the importance, indeed the necessity, of revelation. It was these tendencies that Law was determined to combat. In this he was encouraged and aided by Daniel Waterland, Master of Magdalene College and a learned and effective defender of religious orthodoxy A circle of young philosophers grew around Law, under the effective patronage of Waterland, dedicated to attacking Clarke's metaphysical views, which were seen to constitute the paradigm of the a priori argument, and to developing an a posteriori theology and ethics in opposition to Clarke and those he had influenced. The first manifesto of this group was a translation, with massive notes, of William King's De origine mali (1702), published in 1731. This propounded a form of theological utilitarianism not dissimilar to Law's but epistemologically much more conservative To this was added a prefatory notice 'chiefly written' by John Gay. In Law's heyday there was nobody, except perhaps David Hartley, who showed the ability of either Law or Gay. Both attempted to marry extreme Lockean epistemology to King's utilitarian ethics Law's device is to add extensive notes to King's original text discussing in great detail the matters that concerned him, of which the most important is the metaphysics of Samuel Clarke, most particularly as this concerned space and time and infinity.Law and Gay argued that Clarke and his followers had fudged the issue quite spectacularly by asserting that though space and time existed they were not substances - by which was meant matter or spirit. They could be conceived as attributes or modes of God, though in what sense was unclear; unclear enough to suppose that space and time were in some (but what?) sense part of God. This was inevitable if one supposed that God had certain attributes (omnipresence, infinity) which could have sensory reference. Law, in contrast, argued that space was not actually anything but an abstract idea created by the mind without any necessary outside reference. To suppose that space was in some way part of the essence of matter, or that the mere distance between two objects was space, was nonsensical. God was indeed everywhere present, as Clarke argued, but in a way that we cannot understand. The same themes are repeated in Law's Enquiry into the Ideas of Space, Time, Immensity, and Eternity (1734), which has a long Appendix by Waterland giving a huge collection of citations against the a priori argument Although its influence may have waned, there is no doubt that, transmitted through William Paley, the eighteenth-century theological utilitarianism here discussed, once sanitized and secularized, found itself walking through John Stuart Mill's front door, perhaps without his realizing. Law and his circle were equally unaware of the ease with which their naturalistic ethic could be separated from its theological root. Contemporary full paneled calf with lovely design work on both the front and back covers. Leather (but not the board) on front panel is wormed an irregular pattern (1¼" tall) on lower edge of front cover. Spine with five raised bands and burgundy morocco spine label with gilt lettering. Contemporary ink notation on front endpaper including the dates "1736-7". A really beautiful, crisp, clean, bright copy of this rare book. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.       Par La Compagnie des Libraires, Paris 1734 - Three volumes, comprising Vol. III, parts I to III of Memoires de l’Académie Royale des Sciences depuis 1666 jusqu’à 1699. Paris: Par La Compagnie des Libraires, 1733-1734. Part I: 231pp.; Part II: 294pp.; Part III: 215pp. 97 engraved folding plates depicting animals and skeletal diagrams. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Claude Perrault in first volume. Contemporary French calf, spines gilt, edges red; (some occasional browning; repairs to joints, some rubbing). Unidentified armorial bookplate to front pastedown beneath monogrammed bookplate "D.P." with chipmunk and two mice. A later reduced format edition of Perrault’s Memoires of 1671-1676, Perrault’s study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Prior to 1670, most descriptions of animals paid little attention to their internal structure, and there were very few images in natural history encyclopedias that depicted skeletons or muscles. That changed with the establishment of the Académie des Sciences in Paris in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert with the approval of King Louis XIV. The Academy functioned with neither statutes nor regulations until 1699. At that time, the Academy used the term mathématique to encompass the fields that are now called astronomy, mathematics and physics, and the term physique to encompass the fields that are now called anatomy, botany, zoology and chemistry. In January 1699, Louis reorganized the Academy, giving it first regulations. The effect was to give the King more control over their activities in exchange for becoming an official institution under his protection with the new name Académie Royale des Sciences. One of the original academicians, the physician Claude Perrault, organized regular sessions at which participants could dissect deceased animals from Louis XIV’s royal menagerie and record all they observed. Lions, chameleons, bears, gazelles, wolves, ostriches, crocodiles, monkeys, eagles, tigers, porcupines and salamanders, among some, were all laid open by the academic’s scalpels. These superb folding plates record in great detail the pioneering work at the Academy. These three volumes, in three parts, focus on the transformative and foundational years of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and Claude Perrault’s efforts which had made comparative anatomy a vital tool for the classifying naturalist.

London: for T. Cox; and sold by J. Wilford, , 1734. Likewise shewing, The Absurdity of going to War about Trade; and the most likely Method to prevent the Clandestine Exportation of our Wool: And also to reduce the National Debts and ease taxes. Bound with another contemporary work in one volume, octavo (196 × 123 mm). Contemporary speckled sheep, red morocco label to spine lettered gilt, gilt dash border to front cover, red speckled edges. Bookplate of Ferguson of Raith to front pastedown. Ink annotation to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Extremities lightly rubbed, a little surface wear, corners a little worn, short tear to head of p. 119. An excellent, unrestored copy. First edition of "The first scientific study of the question of distribution - the socialist side of economics: able and influential" (Foxwell). Vanderlint's work "appears to have received little attention during the 18th century until Dugald Stewart referred to it as anticipating the Physiocrats on the single tax of land rent and on free trade. Stewart compared [Vanderlint] also with David Hume ... McCulloch used Stewart's opinions on several occasions and may have provided the basis for Marx's charge that 'Hume follows step by step, and often even in his personal idiosyncracies' Vanderlint's work" (Peter Groenewegen, in The New Palgrave). "Like Barbon and North, [Vanderlint] had a global vision of international trade and pleaded for free trade ... He recognized the mutual benefits that flowed from free trading referring to 'an invincible argument for free and unrestrained trade'" (Murphy, Monetary Theory 1601-758, pp. 46-7). The book is bound second in a volume with Joshua Gee, The Trade and Navigation of Great-Britain considered: shewing, that the surest Way for a Nation to increase in Riches, is to prevent the Importation of such Foreign Commodities as may be rais'd at Home.         The Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed.

London, C[harles] Ackers for J[ohn] Wilcox, 1734. - Large 4to. (4), IX, (3), 187, (1), 508, (16) pp. Title-page printed in red and black. With 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca" and 3 family trees (2 folding). Contemp. full calf, sewn on 5 cords, boards decorated with gilt and blindstamped borders around panels of differering tones; gilt morocco spine label. All edges gilt, with hidden coloured painting of Mecca to fore-edge (visible when fanned). First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only as an effort to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in western Quranic studies in general. Included are Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse, assembling a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, with material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes Sale's "enlightened and objective attitude" which contrasted sharply with that of most earlier and contemporary western Arabists: "His freedom from religious prejudice [.], his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance". Sale's English translation, subsequently rendered into German, French, and Russian, remains highly regarded today. - Insignificant browning throughout, as common. A good, prettily bound copy of a groundbreaking English translation of the Quran with an elaborate fore-edge painting, hidden under the gilt fore-edge, showing the Masjid al-Haram with the Kaaba at the centre, the city extending around the mosque, and a departing caravan in the foreground. ESTC T146975. Schnurrer 429. Fück 104 ("classic translation"). P. M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60. McKenzie & Ross (eds.), A ledger of Charles Ackers, 41.         The Koran, Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed,

London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. Quarto (245 × 190). Contemporary panelled calf rebacked with red-brown morocco spine in compartments, edges sprinkled red. Title-page printed in red and black with tissue-guard tipped in, folding map of Arabia, 4 plates of which 3 folding, Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Slightly rubbed overall with light craquelure to central panel of front board, light toning as usual with signatures L to Q rather tanned, tan-burn to front free endpaper from turn-ins, folding map inverted with a couple of short closed tears to no loss, brown ink-stain to D2 r. A very good copy, the plates and map notably crisp and fresh. First edition of the second and most authoritative English version of the Qur'an. George Sale was a solicitor by training and "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders … From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an … a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of the Near East, p. 58). The only previous complete translation of the Qur'an into English had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version of du Ryer's notoriously free translation into French. Despite Sale's claim to have worked directly from the Arabic, he acknowledges a debt to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI; notably, his citation of Muslim commentators is restricted to those already cited by his predecessor. Yet Sale's work, and in particular his extensive Preliminary Discourse discussing both the biography of the Prophet and the Arabian context of Islam, evinces "an enlightened and objective attitude which may have been responsible for his gradual dissocation from the activities of the SPCK" (ibid.), in contrast to the openly polemical intentions of Marracci, whose prefaced offered a lengthy refutation of the Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood. Sale's balanced presentation of Muhammad and Islamic origins was much admired by his contemporaries, including Voltaire, Lessing and especially Gibbon, whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had still not been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978). This copy with the armorial bookplate of George Kenyon of Peel to the front pastedown, with "Gredington" inscribed above in a fine hand. George Kenyon of Peel Hall, Lancashire, was a barrister by profession and at once uncle and father-in-law to Lloyd Kenyon, 1st Baron Kenyon (1732-1802), who had married his daughter Mary. Gredington Hall in Flintshire was the birthplace of Lloyd Kenyon and remains the seat of the Kenyon family.

Fine. chez Tomas Franco., à Andrinople [Paris] 1734, in 12 (10,5x16,5cm), 201pp., relié. - First Edition. The book has also been attributed to Lenglet Dufresnoy and some Quesnel whose name is in the preface. See Peignot, Dictionary of condemned books Fire II, p. 53-54. Vintage cardboard. Back smooth threads. Part of title in black morocco. Utopia takes place in India, narrated by an Indian prince. Hindu women, announces the author, were ordered to burn after the death of their husbands. Princesses Malabares found expedient to this system by marrying as many husbands as possible, forcing each man to absolute fidelity. Through a description of the customs of the Malabar Island, the author establishes a satirical criticism of religious systems, tyrant of mankind. It is a curious relationship, where it is mainly ratio between men and women. The tale is full of puzzles and keys (see table of names with solving anagrams) that are not always easy to grasp. The book was burned at the stake by the decision of the Parliament of 31 December 1734. Ironically for a book whose first lines of the preface asserts that "man throws himself naturally [...] on everything that is forbidden ", including books condemned. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Frottements.
