The Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed.

London, C[harles] Ackers for J[ohn] Wilcox, 1734.. Large 4to. (4), IX, (3), 187, (1), 508, (16) pp. Title-page printed in red and black. With 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca" and 3 family trees (2 folding). Contemp. full calf, sewn on 5 cords, boards decorated with gilt and blindstamped borders around panels of differering tones; gilt morocco spine label. All edges gilt, with hidden coloured painting of Mecca to fore-edge (visible when fanned).. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only as an effort to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in western Quranic studies in general. Included are Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse, assembling a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, with material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes Sale's "enlightened and objective attitude" which contrasted sharply with that of most earlier and contemporary western Arabists: "His freedom from religious prejudice [...], his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance". Sale's English translation, subsequently rendered into German, French, and Russian, remains highly regarded today. - Insignificant browning throughout, as common. A good, prettily bound copy of a groundbreaking English translation of the Quran with an elaborate fore-edge painting, hidden under the gilt fore-edge, showing the Masjid al-Haram with the Kaaba at the centre, the city extending around the mosque, and a departing caravan in the foreground. - ESTC T146975. Schnurrer 429. Fück 104 ("classic translation"). P. M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60. McKenzie & Ross (eds.), A ledger of Charles Ackers, 41.

This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. Pierre Bayle?s Dictionary is effectively constituted one of the first encyclopaedias of ideas and their originators. In the Dictionary, Bayle expressed his view that much that was considered to be "truth" was actually just opinion, and that gullibility and stubbornness were prevalent. The Dictionary remains an important scholarly work for several generations after its publication. The majority of the entries are devoted to individual people, whether historical or mythical, though some articles treat religious beliefs and philosophies. Many of the more controversial ideas in the book were hidden away in the voluminous footnotes, or slipped into articles on seemingly uncontroversial topics. The rigor and skeptical approach used by Bayle in his Dictionary influenced many thinkers of the Enlightenment, including Denis Diderot and the other Encyclopedistes, David Hume, and George Berkeley. Bayle pointed out contradictions between theological tenets and the supposedly self-evident dictates of reason, though at the same time sought to promote religious tolerance, and argued strongly against inflexible and authoritarian application of religious articles of faith. Bowles, 1734. |~||~||~||~||~| Fourth Edition. John Ogilby's famous road maps of England, originally published in 1675 in a larger folio edition entitled: Britannia: or an Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales, remains the finest record of the highways and byways of Restoration England. Ogilby's survey was the most accurate to date, he used the new distance of 1760 yards to a mile instead of the old standard of 2428 yards and calculated distances methodically by foot. Due to public demand for Ogilby's accurate strip road maps in a format conducive to travel, smaller versions were frequently re-published, with the present edition being one of the most successful. Thomas Bowles first published Britannia Depicta in 1720 followed by three more editions, with the fourth edition being reissued throughout the eighteenth century until 1764. An all-together elaborate production, with each page entirely and carefully engraved with beautiful borders, coats-of-arms and notations throughout. A very nice copy, sympathetically rebacked with original spine laid-down, margins slightly trimmed on some leafs, recent maroon morocco spine label and endpapers, lacking clasps, some wear to binding extremties. Matthäus Seutter 1(647 ?"1756) One of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century, engraver, globe-maker and publisher. Born in Augsburg in 1685, the son of a goldsmith. Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg in 1697, apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann. in 1707 later he returned to Augsburg subsequently working in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in the city. He founded the Seutter publishing house and print shop in 1710, producing maps, atlases, and globes., which became a primary competitor to Homann. By 1732 Seutter was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI with the title of "Imperial Geographer". Seutter continued to publish until his death, at the height of his career, in 1757. Very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and none of the necessary connections to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Therefore Seutter copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models (approximately 500 pieces). His "Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt' appeared in 1725 with 46 maps: the "Atlas Novus" various editions in 1728, 1730, 1736, 1742; the "Grosser Atlas" in 1734 with 131 maps, and the pocket atlas "Atlas minor in 1744 with 64 maps.         The Most Up-to-date Record of Ingermanland or Ingria. " Ingermanlandiae seu Ingriae Novissima Tabula

Europe: Nuremberg Homannianos Heredes 1734. Copper engraved map of Ingria from Johann Bapt. Homann's "Grosser Atlas.". Original full colour, verso blank. The map shows Ingria the area around St Petersburg. Ingria on the Gulf of Finland was a disputed territory for centuries, annexed to Russia by Peter the Great in 1721 at the conclusion of the Great Northern War with Sweden. The region formed a protective land barrier around his new city of St. Petersburg, depicted at upper left, in black & white vignette with war ships [Peter's newly organised navy?] to the foreground; the whole held aloft as if on a tapestry by three putti. Decorative title cartouche at the lower right, surrounded by various sea nymphs paying homage to Posidon, God of the Sea with Aphrodite on her sea shell. Good dark impression; bright and clean ; old ink number to upper right coner; minor soiling to blank margins with light dampstain to upper and lower edges; blue crayon? line to upper left corner just entering plate; minor chips to lower edge. Johann Baptist Homann (1664 ?" 1724) from 1687 Homann worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece "Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt" Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, in business until 1848, known as "Homann Erben", "Homanniani Heredes", "Heritiers de Homann" abroad.         Genealogical tree of the House of Eberhard Ludwig of Würtenburg & Teck. "Dem Durchlaughteigsten Fürsten ubd Herrn, Herrn Eberhard Ludwig, Herzogen zu Würtenburg und Teck Grafen zu Mömpelgard, herrn zu Hiidenheim etc .etc

World Celestial & Curiosities: Augsburg SEUTTER MATTHÄUS 1734. Copper engraved genealogical plate by Matthaus Seutter from his " Grosser Atlas," Original full colour; verso blank. The image shows a Genealogical tree with a reclining figure below; to the right a vine grows to form the title cartouche, below which sit two allagorical female figureswith a hop garden in the background, surounding them a hunters spoils and geometrical instruments. To the left on the hide of a deer details of the genealogyof the duchy of Würtemburg and Teck The image portrayed by Seutter reflects what we know of Eberhard Ludwig: he became Duke in 1683 at the age of 16, and showed no excessive interest in governmental affairs. Eberhard Ludwig was described by his contemporaries as superficial and easily influenced. Most importantly, his behavior led to the political fate of the land being greatly decided by his council. The duke preferred hunting and left the administration of his county in the hands his advisors. Seutter therefore seems to be commenting on the Duke as well as giving the family tree. Dark impression; slight browning at centrefold ; showthrough from verso of old ink nu.mber. After Matthäus Seutter died in 1757, his son, Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the business for five more years.
