LES AVENTURES DE TÉLÉMAQUE, FILS D'ULYSSE

Amsterdam: Wetstein & G. Smith; Rotterdam: Jean Hofhout, 1734. First Printing of this Edition. ONE OF 150 COPIES IN FOLIO FORMAT n. This is a very well-preserved copy of the luxury version of one of the most impressive French illustrated books of the 18th century, offered in a Neoclassical binding appropriate for its contents. Ray says that in our volume "all the formal elements of the mid-18th century French masterpieces are present." He describes the 25 plates as "stately and elaborate" and singles out Picart's frontispiece (which he reproduces in one of the rare full-page illustrations in his book) as being "developed with exceptional spirit and inventiveness." Not only the handsome plates, but also the leafy frames of each text page, the large type, and the many charming headpieces and tailpieces make it an elegant object that provides for a visually memorable experience. Fénelon (1651-1715) wrote this utopian work for Louis XIV's grandson, whom he was employed to tutor. The book was designed to give the future ruler more farsighted political, social, and economic ideas than he might otherwise have met with. Unfortunately, the boy died before he could come to power, and Fénelon fell into disgrace, partly because "Telemaque" reflected badly on the government of Louis. According to Graesse, our "beautiful" edition, supervised by the marquis de Fénelon, is much more correct than previous printings, as a great many errors have been corrected and lacunae have been filled in. While the unsigned binding is not quite up to the level of emigré binders Kalthoeber and Staggemeier & Welcher, it is in their style and is certainly impressive enough to look handsome on the shelf. Former owner Arthur Meyer (1844-1924) was a French press baron whose collection focused on fine bindings and beautiful illustrations.. 375 x 265 mm. (14 3/4 x 10 1/2"). 4 p.l. including portrait and frontispiece, x, xxvi (i.e. xvi), 395, [1] pp. Like most copies ours lacks the suppressed material designed to follow page 395. First Printing of this Edition. ONE OF 150 COPIES IN FOLIO FORMAT. FINE CONTEMPORARY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, covers with palmette roll border, central panel with gilt-ruled frame and lozenge accented with bead and lozenge roll, spine gilt and inlaid with olive morocco bands tooled with gilt chalice and leaves between the double raised bands, spine compartments with central urn ornament surrounded by small tools, calligraphic flourishes at corners, gilt titling, turn-ins with elaborate gilt roll featuring leaves and moths, blue watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt (lower board with three older repaired patches). In a modern marbled paper slipcase. Ornamental headpieces and tailpieces, title page decorated with vignette, author portrait by Drevet after Vivien, and 25 more plates illustrating the tale engraved by Folkéma and others, predominantly in classical style, three (including the frontispiece) designed by Picart, 16 by Dubourg, and six by Debrie, with original tissue guards; 45 vignettes serving as headpieces (24) and tailpieces (21), designed by Dubourg and Shenk, one engraved folding map, and extra-illustrated with a portrait of Fenelon by Jean Coraboeuf dated 1920. Text with ornamental border throughout. Front pastedown with the bookplate of Arthur Meyer. Cohen-de Ricci 381-82; Ray 1; Brunet II, 1214; Graesse II, 564. A few darkened patches on boards, small chip to olive band at tail of spine, corners gently bumped, occasional minor foxing or light browning, otherwise QUITE AN EXCELLENT COPY, the binding altogether pleasing with only insignificant wear, the text clean and fresh, with rich impressions of the plates. This is a very well-preserved copy of the luxury version of one of the most impressive French illustrated books of the 18th century, offered in a Neoclassical binding appropriate for its contents.

Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1734-1742. 6 volumes. 4to (247 x 190mm). With 6 engraved vignettes and 267 engraved folded plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt ornamented spines, with Royal Crown, in 6 compartments with 2 red gilt lettered labels (a few volumes very lightly rubbed). The first edition of this famous entomological classic. Reaumur was among the greatest naturalists of his time and a pioneer in applied entomological research. Like most scientists of his period he had a very broad interest. His greatest work is the "Mémoires pour servir ..." It describes the appearance, habits and locality of all known insects, and is a marvel of patient and accurate observation. "The most widely read portion of Réaumur's natural history of insects is probably the nine memoirs of Vol. V on the history of the bees, Réaumur lavished an enormous amount of time and observational and experimental skill on these productive social insects. His descriptions were minute and exacting in every detail, and his experiments were among the most ingenious he ever contrived. Réaumur was one of the first to undertake extensive quantative research on insects... He made some of the first tentative studies of communication among the bees. In short there was no aspect of the life cycle or behavior of bees too minute or too unimportant to escape his attention" (DSB).//Nissen ZBI, 3315; En Français dans le texte, 145.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Bayle's influential encyclopedia was a best-selling philosophical work of the 18th century. The Dictionnaire's influence can be seen on Diderot, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, Hume, Berkeley, among others. The work combined biography, history, literary criticism, theology, obscenity, in addition to philosophical treatments of toleration, the problem of evil, epistemological questions, etc. Bayle's extensive commentary propelled his reader's interest. (Although an avowed Christian by faith rather than by reason, Bayle's fideist approach to the question of God created the logical framework for an atheist worldview. Bayle pointed out contradictions between theological tenets and the supposedly self-evident dictates of reason, though at the same time sought to promote religious tolerance, and argued strongly against inflexible and authoritarian application of religious articles of faith. (The SEP remarks that Bayle's most significant impact is on the impulse towards modern atheism.) (Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Bayle's remarks on Spinoza are particularly interesting. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Bon exemplaire [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Koran, Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed,

London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Quarto (250 × 200 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine with raised bands enclosed by ropework fillets in blind and inked title to second compartment, covers concentrically panel-stamped in blind with acorn cornerpieces and "mandorla" centrepieces in the Islamic style, red-sprinkled edges. Title-page printed in red and black, folding map of Arabia, 3 genealogical plates of which 2 folding, one folding plan of Mecca. Vellum rubbed and darkened overall, portion of cockling towards upper outer corner of front cover, both upper outer corners bumped, light variable tanning throughout as often with browning to quire U, first blank slightly chipped and nicked along fore edge, very occasional faint spotting chiefly restricted to margins and title-page, small worm-track to lower outer corners of a few leaves in quires 2D-G to no loss. Internally clean overall: a very good and notably well-margined copy in a pleasing contemporary binding. First edition of the first authoritative English translation of the Qur'an. This copy with the near-contemporary ownership inscription of Dutch Arabist "J[ohannes] Willmett, 1770" to the front free endpaper. Willmett (1750-1835) was the author of several works, including a Qur'anic lexicon published in Rotterdam in 1784; his ownership inscription is accompanied by a scholarly note in Latin on Sale's text, pointing readers to David Megerlin's first German translation of the Qur'an made directly from the Arabic, and noting that Sale's version contains a number of details absent from du Ryer's notoriously inaccurate French edition; before Sale, the only previous complete translation of the Qur'an into English had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version, a translation made directly from du Ryer's French. George Sale was a solicitor by training and "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders Â… From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an Â… a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of the Near East, p. 58). Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI; notably, his citation of Muslim commentators is restricted to those already mentioned by his predecessor. Yet Sale's work, and in particular his extensive Preliminary Discourse discussing both the biography of the Prophet and the Arabian context of Islam, evinces "an enlightened and objective attitude which may have been responsible for his gradual dissocation from the activities of the SPCK", in contrast to the openly polemical intentions of Marracci, whose prefaced offered a lengthy refutation of the Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood (idem). Sale's balanced presentation of Muhammad and Islamic origins was much admired by his contemporaries, including Voltaire, Lessing and especially Gibbon, whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had still not been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).

To which are added Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, In Opposition to Scepticks and Atheists. First Printed in the Year 1713

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1734. 355pp, [1]. Contemporary calf boards, recently rebacked with contemporary black morocco lettering-piece laid-on, gilt. Rubbing to boards. Light spots of foxing throughout, occasional annotations in pencil to margins and text, with the book-label of Nicholas Wall to REP. A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, a work of 1710 by Anglo-Irish Empiricist philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), seeks to examine the nature of human perception and proffer an explanation for its origin. Composed primarily as a refutation of the notions of contemporary John Locke (1632-1704), Berkeley sought to prove that the corporeal world, that is the physical realm that provides the catalyst for the ideas in one's mind, is in actuality itself formed solely of ideas. Berkeley achieved this through stating that the mental ideas which we possess may only resemble other ideas, not material objects, thus the external world has no tangible form, being simple a construct of the mind. This realm of thought, Berkeley suggests, had to have been given logic and regularity by some other force separate from ourselves, this he concludes to be a proof of Gods existence. ESTC T73934..

A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, first published in 1710 by Anglo-Irish empiricist philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), examines the nature of human perception and proffers an explanation for its origin. Composed primarily as a refutation of the notions of his contemporary John Locke (1632-1704), Berkeley sought to prove that the corporeal world, that is the physical realm that provides the catalyst for the ideas in one's mind, is itself formed solely of ideas. Berkeley theory of 'immaterialism' argues that the mental ideas which we possess 'can only resemble other ideas', not material objects; the external world is in this explanation is therefore a construct of the mind, without tangible form. This realm of thought, Berkeley suggests, had to have been given logic and regularity by some external force; which he concludes to be a proof of Gods existence. This second edition includes the 1713 popularisation of immaterialist thought: Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous. ESTC T73934.. Second edition. 8vo.
