[ENGRAVED MAP OF THE PROPOSED BOUNDARIES BETWEEN MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA]

[London: John Senex, 1734. Old fold lines, minor edge wear, slight paper loss to bottom right corner, well outside the plate mark. Expertly backed on archival tissue Very good. A rare copperplate engraved map relating to the boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland. This dispute between the Lords Baltimore as proprietors of the colony of Maryland and the Penns in the same role in Pennsylvania led to decades of lawsuits, culminating in the famous Mason-Dixon survey. The story of the Penn-Baltimore Agreement has been told in great detail by Nicholas Wainwright in his article, "Tale of a Runaway Cape: The Penn-Baltimore Agreement of 1732." From the time of William Penn's original grant of Pennsylvania in 1682, he was at loggerheads with the Lords Baltimore over the boundary lines between the colonies. Sporadic efforts to resolve the problem finally became serious negotiations in 1731. Both sides put forward maps of their own as guides, and indeed, as Wainwright says, "The map was really the key to the Agreement." Baltimore insisted on the use of his map, and the Penns, who were under great money pressure and eager for an agreement, acceded, as they did to a number of Baltimore's demands. Baltimore's map was in due course taken to the shop of John Senex, in Fleet Street, where it was engraved. One proof strike of it, with a scale of miles, survives in the Penn Papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The scale was later erased and the map printed on each of the six final copies of the agreement. With the cartography agreed to, the rest of the bargain was quickly struck. On May 10, 1732, Baltimore and each of the Penn brothers signed the document and placed their seals on its bottom edge. When the agreement was reported in America in 1733, the machinery was set in motion to survey the boundaries. But the deal was unpopular in Maryland, and Lord Baltimore soon discovered another problem: his map was inaccurate, and the mislocation of Cape Henelopen on the Delaware coast gave the Penns more land than he had thought. With his colony unhappy and feeling he had given up more than intended, Calvert sought to abrogate the agreement. As a result, in 1734 he sued in Chancery Court in London, charging fraud. The Penns, naturally, replied that the agreement was based on Baltimore's map, not theirs. Finally, in 1750 the Penns won the case, with costs, and the surveying could proceed. However, it was not until 1763 that both sides agreed to hire Mason and Dixon and share the costs of the survey. This is a second state of the original 1732 Senex plate (engraved by him and meant to accompany the six manuscript copies of the May 10, 1732 ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT), and originally accompanied the 1734 publication of TRUE COPIES OF I. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN LORD BALTIMORE AND MESSIEURS PENN...., one of the key documents in the ensuing lawsuits. The maps that came with the 1734 work have a double-ruled border, as does the present copy. The work was published, according to Streeter, "perhaps as a memorandum for use in petitions made to George II that year by Lord Baltimore and Richard Penn." The map was sometimes laid in, accounting for the current independence of this map without any visible signs of having been bound in, and explaining how copies of TRUE COPIES... are found without the map as often as with it. A landmark piece of American cartography. STREETER 951. SABIN 60743. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 734/16a. Nicholas B. Wainwright, "Tale of a Runaway Cape: The Penn- Baltimore Agreement of 1732" in THE PENNSYLVANIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, Vol. 87, pp.251-93 (July 1963).

        Dissertatio et Animadversiones ...

1734. LUPI - EPITAPH INSCRIPTIONS LUPI, Antonio Maria. Dissertatio et Animadversiones ad nuper inventum Severae Martyris Epitaphium. [10], 202 pp. With 20 plates (numbered 1-20) of which 3 are folding, numerous text illustrations. Folio, 300 x 201 mm, bound in contemporary Italian vellum. Palermo: Stephan Amato, 1734. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this interesting and unusual collection of early inscriptions, including those found in the Catacombs at Palermo. The work illustrates mainly Early Christian inscriptions, in Latin and Greek, although there are some curious scripts ("characteribus barbaris graphio inscriptis notatum"); in one peculiar example, depicted on p. 61, a Latin inscription is written in Greek letters. The Jesuit priest Antonio Maria Lupi (1695-1737) was a prolific philologian; initially studying philosophy at Macarata, he became rector at the Roman Seminary at Siena, then professor of rhetoric and headmaster of the Jesuit College at Palermo, where the present work was written. Lupi's Dissertatio was dedicated by him on behalf of the Jesuit College at Palermo to Bernardo Benedicto Maria Gravina. Among the many fine engravings of Epitaph inscription, one is signed by Antonio Bova, who Bénézit claims was active at Palermo ca. 1750-1772; the present work signals that the artist was active there much earlier. According to the Houghton Library, this work was published in the same year under the title: Dissertatio cronologica, paleographica, ecclesiastica in veteri Græca inscriptione minio conscripta Severæ martyris epitaphium referenti (unknown to De Backer-Sommervogel). Minor wear to binding extremities, but a very good copy. De Backer-Sommervogel V, 188, no. 6. Cicognara 3121.

Observations importantes sur le manuel des accouchemens.

Paris, Cavelier, 1734.

A New Draught of the Island of Madagascar als. St.Lorenzo with Augustin Bay and the Island of Mombass at Large

London: William Mount & Thomas Page, 1734. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition. A very elegant sea chart of Madagascar and Mozambique, from the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot' This highly attractive and finely engraved sea chart features the large island of Madagascar, and the adjacent coast of the African continent. Madagascar was named São Lorenço by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth-century. By the time that this chart was made, the island was a favoured base for pirates, including Captain Kidd, who took advantage of Madagascar's location near the treasure-laden shipping routes which lay in between the East Indies and Europe. The chart includes a fine inset of Augustin Bay, perhaps the finest anchorage on the island. On the right side of the chart runs the coast of Mozambique, starting from Lorenço Marques (Maputo) in the south up past the Portuguese fort of Mozambique. In the upper center of the map is another fine cartographic inset of Mombassa, the great trading port located on the coast of modern day Kenya. During this time, possession of Mombassa was fiercely fought over between the Portuguese and the Sultinate of Oman. The seas are elegantly traversed by rhumb lines and feature a wealth of navigational information including depth soundings and the locations of reefs and shoals. In 1671, the London cartographer John Seller (fl.1664-97) commenced work on The English Pilot, a work that intended to challenge Dutch hegemony in the sea atlas market. Intended to be published in four books covering different regions of the globe, Seller published an uncompleted book on 'Oriental navigation' in 1675. Unable to continue this Herculean endeavour, Seller sold his rights to John Thornton, the official hydrographer to the English East India Company. Thornton took up the project with great fervour, publishing his first editions in 1689. Thornton did not publish his first edition of the Third Book, detailing navigation in the East Indies, until 1703. While Thornton largely based his charts on those of earlier Dutch cartographers, most notably those found in Pieter Goos' Zee-Spiegel and Lucas Janz Waghenaer's Mariner's Mirror , The English Pilot proved to be enormously popular. When John Thornton died in 1708, his brother Samuel took over the business and added to and modified existing charts. All four books were produced in editions until the 1760s, the Third Book ran into twelve editions up to 1761. The project succeeded in giving the English dominance in the sea chart market as the eighteenth-century progressed. Cf. Phillips, Atlases , 4278-15; Verner & Skelton (eds.), John Thornton - The English Pilot: The Third Book (Facsimile 1703 edition).

A Large Draught of the North Part of China Shewing the Passages and the Chanells into the Harbour of Chusan

London: William Mount & Thomas Page, 1734. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition, apart from an expertly repaired centre fold, and mild creases where the map folded. A very fine sea chart of China's Zhejiang Province, from the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot' This elegant and large sea chart captures China's modern day Zhejiang province. Located on the East China sea, just below the Yangtze Delta, this region was of major interest to European traders during the eighteenth-century. It features the major port of Zhousan (Chusan), and was the location of the entrance of the Grand Canal of China. The canal, construction of which began in the 5th-century B.C., was then the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world, which allowed barges to travel hundreds to Beijing. In 1671, the London cartographer John Seller (fl.1664-97) commenced work on The English Pilot , a work that intended to challenge Dutch hegemony in the sea atlas market. Intended to be published in four books covering different regions of the globe, Seller published an uncompleted book on 'Oriental navigation' in 1675.       London: printed for R. Montagu, J. Brindley and C. Corbett, 1734. Quarto. (9 15/16 x 7 3/8 inches). Title in red and black, one page publisher's advertisements at end. Hand coloured engraved frontispiece, 12 hand coloured engraved plates of flowers in vases, by James Smith after Pieter Casteels. (Small worm-track through lower margins, old browning with occasional repairs to a few leaves). Expertly bound to style in half 18th-century diced russia with marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt fillets and a Greek-key roll, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, decorative repeat pattern of small tools and stylized foliage surrounding a larger flower spray tool Provenance: Elizabeth Oldershaw (inscription noting the gift of the book from her uncle Henry Fleming, dated 1760) Third edition, the second in quarto, with the addition of a section on hot-house gardening. This celebrated 18th-century nurseryman's catalogue is an important work both artistically and in the history of gardening, giving a contemporary account of the plants that were fashionable in the first half of the 18th century. The plates are reduced from those in Furber's Twelve Months of Flowers published in 1730. This folio work `was conceived as a flower catalogue, but its commercial function was adroitly veiled and the artistic quality of its illustrations distinguishes it from the more modest pamphlets generally produced by floriculturists.. in this period' ( Oak Spring Flora p.143). The plates are after Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), an artist of high renown. `Despite their great profusion, every flower in these compositions is readily identifiable. They range from native species to exotic specimens from the Americas [including a number received from Mark Catesby]' (op. cit. p.146). Text was added to the present edition, as is explained in the introduction, because `we thought a particular description of the flowers, and the nature of their culture, which could not be express'd in the plates themselves, might hope for the same success... That to know only the names of the flowers, and to be ignorant of their culture, might occasion a continual expence in procuring such rarities, which one day, might live with them, and, for want of this necessary knowledge, might perish the next' Dunthorne 114; Great Flower Books (1990) p.80; Henrey III.713; Hunt 493; Johnston Cleveland's Treasures from the World of Botanical Literature p.65; Massachusetts Horticultural Society p.100; Nissen BBI 677; cf.         A Chart of the Coast of Guinea from Cape de Verde to Cape Bona Esperança

London: William Mount & Thomas Page, 1734. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition. A very elegant sea chart of all of the west coast of Africa and one of the most important charts of the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot' This very fine sea chart embraces the coast of Africa from Senegal all the way down to Cape Agulhas, past the Cape of Good Hope. The features of the coast are named in great detail, and the seas are elegantly traversed by loxodromes. The map is oriented with the east towards the top of the map, and a very beautiful cartouche surrounded by mermen and seashells adorns the upper left corner. Cf. Phillips, Atlases , 4278-10; Verner & Skelton (eds.), John Thornton - The English Pilot: The Third Book (Facsimile 1703 edition).

[ENGRAVED MAP OF THE PROPOSED BOUNDARIES BETWEEN MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA].

[London: John Senex, ca. 1734].. Copperplate map. 15 x 10 inches. The maps that came with the 1734 work have a double- ruled border, as does the present copy.

Bound in black 19th century 1/2 morocco leather over green boards. Gilt ruled. Marbled end pages. Marbled edges. Good binding and covers. Wear to extremities. Clean, unmarked pages. Titles in red and black. Per Printing in the Mind of Man 155b: "For over half a century, until the publication of the Encyclopedie, Bayle's Dictionnaire dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe". This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. Pierre Bayle's Dictionary is effectively constituted one of the first encyclopaedias of ideas and their originators. In the Dictionary, Bayle expressed his view that much that was considered to be "truth" was actually just opinion, and that gullibility and stubbornness were prevalent. The Dictionary remains an important scholarly work for several generations after its publication. The majority of the entries are devoted to individual people, whether historical or mythical, though some articles treat religious beliefs and philosophies. Many of the more controversial ideas in the book were hidden away in the voluminous footnotes, or slipped into articles on seemingly uncontroversial topics. Pierre Bayle was a Huguenot scholar who fled from French religious intolerance to Geneva and Holland. Bayle's influential encyclopedia was a best-selling philosophical work of the 18th century. The Dictionnaire's influence can be seen on Diderot, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, Hume, Berkeley, among others. The work combined biography, history, literary criticism, theology, obscenity, in addition to philosophical treatments of toleration, the problem of evil, epistemological questions, etc. Bayle's extensive commentary propelled his reader's interest. (Although an avowed Christian by faith rather than by reason, Bayle's fideist approach to the question of God created the logical framework for an atheist worldview. Bayle pointed out contradictions between theological tenets and the supposedly self-evident dictates of reason, though at the same time sought to promote religious tolerance, and argued strongly against inflexible and authoritarian application of religious articles of faith. (Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy remarks that Bayle's most significant impact is on the impulse towards modern atheism.) Bayle's remarks on Spinoza are particularly interesting.

Tranches rouges. Pas de rousseur. Parfait état. Format in-12°(16x10). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, PASSED IN THE CHARIBBEE LEEWARD ISLANDS. FROM 1690, TO 1730

London, 1734. Folio. Antique half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather labels. A few leaves lightly tanned, last few leaves chipped and worn at edges. Very good. Laws for the Leeward Islands, colonized by the British in the late 17th century, comprising Antigua, Montserrat, and the northern islands up to Puerto Rico in the Caribbean chain, such as Anguilla. Many of the present laws apply to the island of Antigua. Antigua, colonized by the British in the mid-17th century, served as a major sugar producer and hub for shipping in the West Indies. The American Revolutionary War caused a significant disruption in the sugar trade, and British sentiment against slavery further served to shift the economy of the islands in the late 18th century. Laws present here include those taxing liquors and sugars imported, establishing militias and courts, "An Act for the trial of criminal slaves," acts establishing land titles, and more.

An Enquiry into the Ideas of Space, Time, Immensity, and Eternity; As also the Self-Existence, Necessary Existence, and Unity of the Divine Nature; In Answer to a Book lately Publish'd by Mr. Jackson, entitled, The Existence and Unity of God proved from his Nature and Attributes. To which is added, A Dissertation upon the Argument a Priori for proving the Existence of a First Cause. By a Learned Hand.

Printed by W. Fenner and R. Beresford for W. Thurlbourn, Cambridge 1734 - 1 blank leaf + half title + TP + [1]-196 + [1]-98 + [99] = publisher's ads + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First Edition. An 18th Century Speculation on Space and Time - Refuting Samuel ClarkeLaw was a crucial figure in the revival of philosophical inquiry in Cambridge during the twenty years after his graduation in 1723. From a philosophical point of view his main target was Samuel Clarke, already under suspicion since his views on the Trinity were regarded as unorthodox. Further, his supposing that the laws of nature could be deduced a priori could be seen as denigrating the importance, indeed the necessity, of revelation. It was these tendencies that Law was determined to combat. In this he was encouraged and aided by Daniel Waterland, Master of Magdalene College and a learned and effective defender of religious orthodoxy A circle of young philosophers grew around Law, under the effective patronage of Waterland, dedicated to attacking Clarke's metaphysical views, which were seen to constitute the paradigm of the a priori argument, and to developing an a posteriori theology and ethics in opposition to Clarke and those he had influenced. The first manifesto of this group was a translation, with massive notes, of William King's De origine mali (1702), published in 1731. This propounded a form of theological utilitarianism not dissimilar to Law's but epistemologically much more conservative To this was added a prefatory notice 'chiefly written' by John Gay. In Law's heyday there was nobody, except perhaps David Hartley, who showed the ability of either Law or Gay. Both attempted to marry extreme Lockean epistemology to King's utilitarian ethics Law's device is to add extensive notes to King's original text discussing in great detail the matters that concerned him, of which the most important is the metaphysics of Samuel Clarke, most particularly as this concerned space and time and infinity.Law and Gay argued that Clarke and his followers had fudged the issue quite spectacularly by asserting that though space and time existed they were not substances - by which was meant matter or spirit. They could be conceived as attributes or modes of God, though in what sense was unclear; unclear enough to suppose that space and time were in some (but what?) sense part of God. This was inevitable if one supposed that God had certain attributes (omnipresence, infinity) which could have sensory reference. Law, in contrast, argued that space was not actually anything but an abstract idea created by the mind without any necessary outside reference. To suppose that space was in some way part of the essence of matter, or that the mere distance between two objects was space, was nonsensical. God was indeed everywhere present, as Clarke argued, but in a way that we cannot understand. The same themes are repeated in Law's Enquiry into the Ideas of Space, Time, Immensity, and Eternity (1734), which has a long Appendix by Waterland giving a huge collection of citations against the a priori argument Although its influence may have waned, there is no doubt that, transmitted through William Paley, the eighteenth-century theological utilitarianism here discussed, once sanitized and secularized, found itself walking through John Stuart Mill's front door, perhaps without his realizing. Law and his circle were equally unaware of the ease with which their naturalistic ethic could be separated from its theological root. Contemporary full paneled calf with lovely design work on both the front and back covers. Leather (but not the board) on front panel is wormed an irregular pattern (1¼" tall) on lower edge of front cover. Spine with five raised bands and burgundy morocco spine label with gilt lettering. Contemporary ink notation on front endpaper including the dates "1736-7". A really beautiful, crisp, clean, bright copy of this rare book. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
