Bon exemplaire [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Koran, Commonly called The Alcoran of Mohammed,

London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox,, 1734. Translated into English immediately from the Original Arabic; with Explanatory Notes, taken from the most approved Commentators. To which is prefixed A Preliminary Discourse. By George Sale. Quarto (250 × 200 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine with raised bands enclosed by ropework fillets in blind and inked title to second compartment, covers concentrically panel-stamped in blind with acorn cornerpieces and "mandorla" centrepieces in the Islamic style, red-sprinkled edges. Title-page printed in red and black, folding map of Arabia, 3 genealogical plates of which 2 folding, one folding plan of Mecca. Vellum rubbed and darkened overall, portion of cockling towards upper outer corner of front cover, both upper outer corners bumped, light variable tanning throughout as often with browning to quire U, first blank slightly chipped and nicked along fore edge, very occasional faint spotting chiefly restricted to margins and title-page, small worm-track to lower outer corners of a few leaves in quires 2D-G to no loss. Internally clean overall: a very good and notably well-margined copy in a pleasing contemporary binding. First edition of the first authoritative English translation of the Qur'an. This copy with the near-contemporary ownership inscription of Dutch Arabist "J[ohannes] Willmett, 1770" to the front free endpaper. Willmett (1750-1835) was the author of several works, including a Qur'anic lexicon published in Rotterdam in 1784; his ownership inscription is accompanied by a scholarly note in Latin on Sale's text, pointing readers to David Megerlin's first German translation of the Qur'an made directly from the Arabic, and noting that Sale's version contains a number of details absent from du Ryer's notoriously inaccurate French edition; before Sale, the only previous complete translation of the Qur'an into English had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version, a translation made directly from du Ryer's French. George Sale was a solicitor by training and "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders Â… From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an Â… a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of the Near East, p. 58). Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI; notably, his citation of Muslim commentators is restricted to those already mentioned by his predecessor. Yet Sale's work, and in particular his extensive Preliminary Discourse discussing both the biography of the Prophet and the Arabian context of Islam, evinces "an enlightened and objective attitude which may have been responsible for his gradual dissocation from the activities of the SPCK", in contrast to the openly polemical intentions of Marracci, whose prefaced offered a lengthy refutation of the Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood (idem). Sale's balanced presentation of Muhammad and Islamic origins was much admired by his contemporaries, including Voltaire, Lessing and especially Gibbon, whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had still not been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).

A treatise Concerning the principles of human knowledge. Wherein the Chief Causes of Error and Difficulty in the Sciences, with the Grounds of Scepticism, Atheism, and Irreligion, are inquired into. First Printed in the Year 1710. To which are added Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, In Opposition to Scepticks and Atheists. First Printed in the Year 1713

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1734. 355pp, [1]. Contemporary calf boards, recently rebacked with contemporary black morocco lettering-piece laid-on, gilt. Rubbing to boards. Light spots of foxing throughout, occasional annotations in pencil to margins and text, with the book-label of Nicholas Wall to REP. A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, a work of 1710 by Anglo-Irish Empiricist philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), seeks to examine the nature of human perception and proffer an explanation for its origin. Composed primarily as a refutation of the notions of contemporary John Locke (1632-1704), Berkeley sought to prove that the corporeal world, that is the physical realm that provides the catalyst for the ideas in one's mind, is in actuality itself formed solely of ideas. Berkeley achieved this through stating that the mental ideas which we possess may only resemble other ideas, not material objects, thus the external world has no tangible form, being simple a construct of the mind. This realm of thought, Berkeley suggests, had to have been given logic and regularity by some other force separate from ourselves, this he concludes to be a proof of Gods existence. ESTC T73934.. Second edition. 8vo.

Small hole to gutter margin of title, small repair to fore-edge of title, else a crisp and clean copy. With the book-label of Nicholas Wall to REP. A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, first published in 1710 by Anglo-Irish empiricist philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), examines the nature of human perception and proffers an explanation for its origin. Composed primarily as a refutation of the notions of his contemporary John Locke (1632-1704), Berkeley sought to prove that the corporeal world, that is the physical realm that provides the catalyst for the ideas in one's mind, is itself formed solely of ideas. Berkeley theory of 'immaterialism' argues that the mental ideas which we possess 'can only resemble other ideas', not material objects; the external world is in this explanation is therefore a construct of the mind, without tangible form. This realm of thought, Berkeley suggests, had to have been given logic and regularity by some external force; which he concludes to be a proof of Gods existence. This second edition includes the 1713 popularisation of immaterialist thought: Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous. ESTC T73934.. Second edition. 8vo.

Land Purchase, Isleworth. Memorandum, 4pp folio, detailing the purchase of various parcels of meadow or pasture land from Mr [Jonathan] Smith, Mannor of Isleworth, Syon.

1734 Dated 1734, noting each 'parcel', and in some cases previous owners, as recorded in a copy of the Court Rolls for 1684-1685. Land is purchased in Whitton within the Isleworth Parish. Names include Thomas Blagrave, Thomas Gee, Peregrine Britain, John Seagood, and John Bennet. Front 'outer' page rather dusted, old fold marks.Syon House and its 200 acre park is still the London home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, whose family have lived there for over 400 years. It is the last surviving ducal residence and country estate in Greater London. The 7th Duke of Somerset died in 1750, and Hugh and Elizabeth Seymour, who were to become the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, inherited the estates. They were leading figures in contemporary society, and would have inherited a house with dated interiors, surrounded by an unfashionable formal landscape. Gardens and House were both in a poor condition. The solution was a complete redesign of Syon. In one of his first major commissions, the landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown swept away the formal landscape to the south and west of the House, replacing it with the open views characteristic of the English Landscape movement. Over the course of twenty years he extended this to the north and west, incorporating farmland to the west into the new park, and creating Pleasure Grounds to the north, both centred on large new ornamental lakes. In the House the Scottish architect Robert Adam was commissioned to create a series of striking classical interiors, filled with antiquities shipped from Italy. National Archives record: 1689: A surrender of all of Thomas Blagrave's copyhold property to the uses of his will; 1689-1730: Abstract of the title of Jonathan Smith and Elhannah his daughter to copyhold lands at Isleworth; 1734: Memorandum of surrender of cottage and lands at Whitton by Jonathan Smith.

The translation is accurate, and intended for use in schools, but inevitably loses much of the character present in the original verse.         [ENGRAVED MAP OF THE PROPOSED BOUNDARIES BETWEEN MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA]

[London: John Senex, 1734. Old fold lines, minor edge wear, slight paper loss to bottom right corner, well outside the plate mark. Expertly backed on archival tissue Very good. A rare copperplate engraved map relating to the boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland. This dispute between the Lords Baltimore as proprietors of the colony of Maryland and the Penns in the same role in Pennsylvania led to decades of lawsuits, culminating in the famous Mason-Dixon survey. The story of the Penn-Baltimore Agreement has been told in great detail by Nicholas Wainwright in his article, "Tale of a Runaway Cape: The Penn-Baltimore Agreement of 1732." From the time of William Penn's original grant of Pennsylvania in 1682, he was at loggerheads with the Lords Baltimore over the boundary lines between the colonies. Sporadic efforts to resolve the problem finally became serious negotiations in 1731. Both sides put forward maps of their own as guides, and indeed, as Wainwright says, "The map was really the key to the Agreement." Baltimore insisted on the use of his map, and the Penns, who were under great money pressure and eager for an agreement, acceded, as they did to a number of Baltimore's demands. Baltimore's map was in due course taken to the shop of John Senex, in Fleet Street, where it was engraved. One proof strike of it, with a scale of miles, survives in the Penn Papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The scale was later erased and the map printed on each of the six final copies of the agreement. With the cartography agreed to, the rest of the bargain was quickly struck. On May 10, 1732, Baltimore and each of the Penn brothers signed the document and placed their seals on its bottom edge. When the agreement was reported in America in 1733, the machinery was set in motion to survey the boundaries. But the deal was unpopular in Maryland, and Lord Baltimore soon discovered another problem: his map was inaccurate, and the mislocation of Cape Henelopen on the Delaware coast gave the Penns more land than he had thought. With his colony unhappy and feeling he had given up more than intended, Calvert sought to abrogate the agreement. As a result, in 1734 he sued in Chancery Court in London, charging fraud. The Penns, naturally, replied that the agreement was based on Baltimore's map, not theirs. Finally, in 1750 the Penns won the case, with costs, and the surveying could proceed. However, it was not until 1763 that both sides agreed to hire Mason and Dixon and share the costs of the survey. This is a second state of the original 1732 Senex plate (engraved by him and meant to accompany the six manuscript copies of the May 10, 1732 ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT), and originally accompanied the 1734 publication of TRUE COPIES OF I. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN LORD BALTIMORE AND MESSIEURS PENN...., one of the key documents in the ensuing lawsuits. The maps that came with the 1734 work have a double-ruled border, as does the present copy. The work was published, according to Streeter, "perhaps as a memorandum for use in petitions made to George II that year by Lord Baltimore and Richard Penn." The map was sometimes laid in, accounting for the current independence of this map without any visible signs of having been bound in, and explaining how copies of TRUE COPIES... are found without the map as often as with it. A landmark piece of American cartography. STREETER 951. SABIN 60743. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 734/16a. Nicholas B.         Dissertatio et Animadversiones ...

1734. LUPI - EPITAPH INSCRIPTIONS LUPI, Antonio Maria. Dissertatio et Animadversiones ad nuper inventum Severae Martyris Epitaphium. [10], 202 pp. With 20 plates (numbered 1-20) of which 3 are folding, numerous text illustrations. Folio, 300 x 201 mm, bound in contemporary Italian vellum. Palermo: Stephan Amato, 1734. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this interesting and unusual collection of early inscriptions, including those found in the Catacombs at Palermo. The work illustrates mainly Early Christian inscriptions, in Latin and Greek, although there are some curious scripts ("characteribus barbaris graphio inscriptis notatum"); in one peculiar example, depicted on p. 61, a Latin inscription is written in Greek letters. The Jesuit priest Antonio Maria Lupi (1695-1737) was a prolific philologian; initially studying philosophy at Macarata, he became rector at the Roman Seminary at Siena, then professor of rhetoric and headmaster of the Jesuit College at Palermo, where the present work was written. Lupi's Dissertatio was dedicated by him on behalf of the Jesuit College at Palermo to Bernardo Benedicto Maria Gravina. Among the many fine engravings of Epitaph inscription, one is signed by Antonio Bova, who Bénézit claims was active at Palermo ca. 1750-1772; the present work signals that the artist was active there much earlier. According to the Houghton Library, this work was published in the same year under the title: Dissertatio cronologica, paleographica, ecclesiastica in veteri Græca inscriptione minio conscripta Severæ martyris epitaphium referenti (unknown to De Backer-Sommervogel). Minor wear to binding extremities, but a very good copy. De Backer-Sommervogel V, 188, no. 6. Cicognara 3121.

Observations importantes sur le manuel des accouchemens.

Paris, Cavelier, 1734.

John Baskett, London 1734 - 15,24,[4],25-231,[30]pp. Bound to style in half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with leather labels. Laws of the Leeward Islands Laws for the Leeward Islands, colonized by the British in the late 17th century, comprising Antigua, Montserrat, and the northern islands up to Puerto Rico in the Caribbean chain, such as Anguilla. Many of the present laws apply to the island of Antigua. Antigua, colonized by the British in the mid-17th century, served as a major sugar producer and hub for shipping in the West Indies. The American Revolutionary War caused a significant disruption in the sugar trade, and British sentiment against slavery further served to shift the economy of the islands in the late 18th century.
