An Essay on Man. In Epistles to a Friend.

London: J. Wilford, 1733 -, 1734. Four volumes in one, small folio; a few upper margins cut close touching one or two page numerals; crushed red-brown morocco gilt by Morrell. A beautifully bound edition of one of the greatest long poems in the English language. Second edition of the first part, the others first editions. An Essay on Man is one of the best known poems by the poet and satirist Pope. It was widely read on publication, and occasioned a response from Voltaire, La Loi Naturelle of 1756. Pope was very attached to the work, and crushed by some of the negative responses it engendered, in particular its demolition by a Swiss professor, Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until the 1735 publication of his Works did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting: 'If I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'. A good set.

        18th Century Manuscript Cookery Book

This is a very nice early 18th Century Manuscript Copy of the 1734 edition of Eliza Smith's Cookery Book "The Compleat Housewife", containing hundreds of recipes, all carefully written in a nice legible hand, running to 256 manuscript pages with some illustration designs in the text, there is an old inscription to the front endpaper which unfortunately has had some surface damage and is not very clear, the words "Every Night" appear in the inscription, possibly indicating that the book was copied out over a long period in the evenings. The Cambridge style full calf leather binding appears to be early 18th Century, and is rubbed and worn with some splits to joints at spine ends else boards still firmly attached, internally pages browned with some staining, small chips to leading edge of title page else in good general condition, the book runs to 256 numbered pages, there is a catch word at the bottom of the last page indicating that the book is lacking its final leaf or leaves, but given the appearance of the book when closed, it is probably only the final leaf that has gone missing. A Lovely early 18th Century Manuscript copy of this classic Cookery Book

Voyages et Avantures de Jacques Massé.

Cologne: Jaques Kainkus, c. 1734. Duodecimo, frontispiece, title-page printed in black and red; contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments; bookplate and armorial gilt stamp on front board of F. Lachêvre. A handsome copy of the third edition (Rosenberg edition 'C'), with frontispiece portrait of Massé and title-page vignette of Mercury. Friederich comments that the importance of mining and irrigation to the Australians makes it the only work 'to foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia'.Tyssot de Patot was a well-known Huguenot free-thinker, whose writings were a continual source of scandal: Voltaire thought that he had 'carried the torch of discord into their homeland'. Certainly the antagonistically anti-religious stance of this novel created much ill-feeling. Atkinson comments that because 'open criticism of the Bible is so frequent' he will have to content himself with listing just a few of the more extreme examples.Massé shipwrecks on the Southern continent at '44 South latitude, almost at the point where Kerguelen Island will be found to be on modern maps' (Atkinson). Whilst most of the survivors of the wreck are content to maintain a large presence on the coast, Massé and his friend Moret travel inland where they settle in an enormous and well-organised utopia, 'a plentiful, fruitful country, a land of blessing and peace ... where human blood is sacred and safe from the rage and tyranny of great men'. They become so enamoured of their Australian hosts that they abjure their faith and their European heritage, and it is only when Moret is betrayed by his liaison with a treacherous queen that they reluctantly flee, escaping rather fortuitously by a subterranean river which deposits them close by the original settlement. They remain besieged in the camp for another twelve years before they are finally picked up by a Portuguese ship.Rosenberg argues for a date of around 1734 for this edition, to coincide with the renewed interest in Tyssot's work at the time (he cites 1733 English and 1737 German editions). His theory is that this renewal of interest 'arose because it was confused with Mandeville's Fable of the Bees which, by 1730, had achieved considerable notoriety'.

Duodecimo, old quarter calf. First edition of this allegorical satire on French society, an orientalist fantasy with Malabar princesses and many of the usual props including sultans and harems. Its author is believed to have been de Longue, an obscure writer who does not make an appearance in Nouvelle Biographie Générale, but it has also been attributed variously to the abbé Lenglet Dufresnoy, and to one Quesnel, who is mentioned in the preface, and who died in the Bastille. This is an odd book, its most curious feature the use of the anagram. Most of the satire remains allegorical (rather than directed at individuals or institutions): thus for example there are critiques of 'Raison' and 'Religion,' but they become 'Rasoni' and 'Roligine.' The subterfuge may seem redundant when the satire is of a concept, but anyway these rather blatant anagrams are explained in a key at the end of the book. Nonetheless, this enigmatic style did not save the book from the fire: its allegorical satire on French society together with its alleged atheism, meant that it was condemned to be burnt by an arrêt du Parlement in 1734, which adds to its rarity. Title page slightly damaged at inner margin; a few stains but a good copy.

Les princesses Malabares, ou le célibat philosophique

chez Tomas Franco.. First Edition. The book has also been attributed to Lenglet Dufresnoy and some Quesnel whose name is in the preface. See Peignot, Dictionary of condemned books Fire II, p. 53-54. Vintage cardboard. Back smooth threads. Part of title in black morocco. Utopia takes place in India, narrated by an Indian prince. Hindu women, announces the author, were ordered to burn after the death of their husbands. Princesses Malabares found expedient to this system by marrying as many husbands as possible, forcing each man to absolute fidelity. Through a description of the customs of the Malabar Island, the author establishes a satirical criticism of religious systems, tyrant of mankind. It is a curious relationship, where it is mainly ratio between men and women. The tale is full of puzzles and keys (see table of names with solving anagrams) that are not always easy to grasp. The book was burned at the stake by the decision of the Parliament of 31 December 1734. Ironically for a book whose first lines of the preface asserts that "man throws himself naturally [...] on everything that is forbidden ", including books condemned. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. The largest cities are reviewed: Palermo (Palermo), Melazzo, Messina, Catania (Catania), Augustus carlentini, Saragosa (Zaragoza Syracuse) and Trapano. The "Memory of the political state of Sicily" is divided meanwhile into six parts. In the first, Agatin Apary is interested in the Sicilian monarchy and temperament of the Sicilian people. The second chapter discusses the cities of Sicilies and their policies. The third refers to the parliament, laws, finance and officers of the king's finances. Chapter IV is devoted to justice, to the political state and the clergy. Next is a short passage entitled "Natural forces of Sicily" in which the author demonstrates that the insular geography is the very strength of this place. Finally, Sicily is shown as a central trading hub in central Europe and the gateway to Africa, which allows the most prosperous nations to enrich themselves. This part is the opportunity for Apary to review all the Sicilian fleet of the time and show his power and effectiveness.Ex-dono the time of manuscript on the title page.Nice copy. Chez J. Titlepage dusted, sl. edge wear, lower corner a2 torn without loss of text, some occasional marking & light browning, a few slight edge chips, faint contemporary note to page 21 'Lincoln's Inn Library'. Expertly bound in recent full mottled calf, raised & gilt banded spine, small gilt devices, red morocco label.ESTC T154423. A parallel text edition in English and French, and the first appearance in English of the collected fables. It was preceded in 1703 by Mandeville's delightful verse translation of just 29 of the fables, and now presents 100 of them in English prose with the French verse on the facing page. The translation is accurate, and intended for use in schools, but inevitably loses much of the character present in the original verse. Back slightly past. Library Binding, quite rare. Famous pamphlet, particularly violent, against the Book of Bartholomew of Pisa which highlighted the similarities between the life of Jesus Christ and the life of St. Francis. The book begins with a foreword by Conrad Badius and Martin Luther, very insulting to Papists and Cordeliers. The book is in Latin and French, he took the hagiographic narrative of St. Francis by adding him footnotes page, and extremely severe and harsh criticism. More generally, the book is a direct attack against Catholics by Protestants, accusing them of heresy, abominations, Satanism ... ESTC: T122602 Fine Second Edition, corrected, of Keill's first work, "an attack on the cosmogonical treatises about the world's creation then being widely debated by many members of the Royal Society" (DSB VII, p. 275), orginally published in 1698. Keill "used Burnet's Sacred Theory of the Earth as an occasion to attack modern 'world-makers' who endeavour to show 'how, by the necessary laws of Mechanisme, without any extraordinary concurrence of the Divine Power, the world and all that therein is might have been produced'. Blaming in the most contemptuous terms the great French philosopher René Descartes for this trend, Keill also attacks [Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, and others] before focusing his attention on Burnet. . . . Although Keill praises Newton and his refutation of Descartes, and sees Newton's philosophy as the only one which is based upon observation and calculation, he does not attempt to substitute a Newtonian account of the Noachian flood for Burnet's ['atheistic'] Cartesian account. He simply insists that 'a much easier and shorter account' can be given by referring to the 'Omnipotent hand of God, who can do whatsoever he pleases'. . . . In the following year Keill published an Examination of the Reflections on the Theory of the Earth, in response to an anonymous defender of Burnet, and A Defense of the Remarks Made on Mr. Whiston's New Theory, in response to Whiston himself."         Land Purchase, Isleworth. Memorandum, 4pp folio, detailing the purchase of various parcels of meadow or pasture land from Mr [Jonathan] Smith, Mannor of Isleworth, Syon.

1734 Dated 1734, noting each 'parcel', and in some cases previous owners, as recorded in a copy of the Court Rolls for 1684-1685. Land is purchased in Whitton within the Isleworth Parish. Names include Thomas Blagrave, Thomas Gee, Peregrine Britain, John Seagood, and John Bennet. Front 'outer' page rather dusted, old fold marks.Syon House and its 200 acre park is still the London home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, whose family have lived there for over 400 years. It is the last surviving ducal residence and country estate in Greater London. The 7th Duke of Somerset died in 1750, and Hugh and Elizabeth Seymour, who were to become the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, inherited the estates. They were leading figures in contemporary society, and would have inherited a house with dated interiors, surrounded by an unfashionable formal landscape. Gardens and House were both in a poor condition. The solution was a complete redesign of Syon. In one of his first major commissions, the landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown swept away the formal landscape to the south and west of the House, replacing it with the open views characteristic of the English Landscape movement. Over the course of twenty years he extended this to the north and west, incorporating farmland to the west into the new park, and creating Pleasure Grounds to the north, both centred on large new ornamental lakes. In the House the Scottish architect Robert Adam was commissioned to create a series of striking classical interiors, filled with antiquities shipped from Italy. National Archives record: 1689: A surrender of all of Thomas Blagrave's copyhold property to the uses of his will; 1689-1730: Abstract of the title of Jonathan Smith and Elhannah his daughter to copyhold lands at Isleworth; 1734: Memorandum of surrender of cottage and lands at Whitton by Jonathan Smith.

LEXICON CICERONIANUM MARII NIZOLII. Ex recensione Alexandri Scoti nunc crebris locis refectum & inculcatum. Accedunt Phrases & Formulae Linguae Latinae ex Commentariis Stephani Doleti.

1734. Patavii Typis Seminarii Apud Joannem Manfre 1734 In Folio Pagine 8 non numerate + 760 + 88 Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pergamena con angoli. Piatti marmorizzati. Titolo al dorso. Alcune sporadiche fioriture dovute alla qualità dellacarta usata. Frontespizio in rosso e in nero con impresa xilografica con la fenice risorgente dalle fiamme entro cornice figurata. Testo bicolonne. Testatine e capilettera elegantemente ornati incisi su rame. Ottima copia. Graesse, IV, 680. Ebert, 14834. Schweiger, I, 269. Cfr. Hoefer, NBG, XXXVIII, 113.

Paris, Clousier, Gosselin, Coustelier, Paulus-du-Mesnil, 1721-1734. - 9 volumes in-4.

QUODLIBET WITH PLAYING CARDS, DROMEDARY AND A LETTER.

[Dutch] 1734 - Pencil, pen and water-colours on paper (tears in margins, otherwise in a good condition), 36 x 29 cm (14.2 x 11.4 inches). An attractive hand-drawn Dutch quodlibet or trompe-l'œil, shows playing cards, sketches of a dromedary and a rider on a horse, and a letter in Dutch, starting with "Beminde Neef en Nicht" (Dear nephew and niece). The word quodlibet, in Latin meaning "whatever you like", is a type of a hand-drawn or printed image, presenting random small objects, thrown on a desk or pinned on a wall, in a three dimensional manner in order to make an optical illusion. The style is also called trompe-l'œil, although this word is more commonly used for larger objects. The word quodlibet was first used for a musical composition that combines several different melodies—usually popular tunes—in counterpoint, and often in a light-hearted, humorous manner. The quodlibet in painting started developing in the 17th and 18th century, and remained popular throughout the 19th century.

Bel exemplaire.
