Nouvelle edition, Revue, corrigee, & beaucoup augmentee, Avec de nouveaux Desseins de Tables

Amsterdam: Aux Depens de la Compagnie, 1734. 4 leaves, [4], 362, [20] pp. Three folding plates. Index. & A rare early edition of Massialot's famous book on preserves, first published in 1692. The author (ca. 1660-1733) was chef de cuisine to various French nobles, including the brother of Louis XIV and the dukes of Chartres, Orleans and Aumont. His works were published anonymously and not widely circulated among the general public, but they were highly regarded by professional chefs and thus exerted a good deal of influence on the development of French cuisine. The first section of this work discusses all aspects of making preserves, beginning with an explanation of selecting and clarifying sugar. The second chapter discusses the necessary utensils, and the third outlines, month by month, what fruits and flowers are in season and what preserves can be made from them. The chapters that follow discuss specific fruits and flowers, with recipes for their use in preserves, jellies, marmalades, tarts and fruit pies. The author concludes with a chapter on problems that may arise when making preserves and ways to remedy them. The second part is devoted to recipes for liqueurs and the preparation of waters and beverages for each season. The final section is an interesting discussion of fruit, where one learns the quality, merit and maturity of all sorts of fruits and how to serve them. Light brown half-leather and paper covered boards, with raised bands and gilt-lettered morocco spine label. Boards well-rubbed and edge worn, small chip missing from corner of spine label (slightly affecting the "I" in "Instruction"). Modern bookplate to front pastedown, staining to several pages, otherwise a clean and tightly bound copy, better than good. [Worldcat locates only two copies of this Amsterdam imprint, neither in North American collections; see Cagle 323; see Oberle 94-96; Vicaire 455].

Albert SebaIllustrated plate from Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium ThesauriAmsterdam: Wetsten, Smith and Waesberg, 1734-1755.Hand-colored copperplate engraving (Later color)29 1/4” x 39 3/4” framedAlbert Seba’s magnificent Thesauri is a catalogue of his personal natural history collection, an immense conglomeration of specimens of a number of exotic plant and animal life. The son of a Frisian peasant who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company, Seba was an apothecary practicing in Amsterdam when he began to collect. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass this collection on a series of travels to the East and West Indies, and from purchases he made of specimens collected by travelers the world over. Many of the snakes, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his Thesauri were based on the specimens Seba collected in this “cabinet of curiosities.”In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinet and the walls upon which he hung his collection, which in this way became a sort of predecessor of the modern museum. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens originated. It is documented, for example, that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. These fine engravings made Seba’s unparalleled collection accessible to a much wider spectrum of enthusiasts, and modern viewers, too, can appreciate the stylized compositions and near-abstract quality of their stylized, fanciful compositions.

A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE LIVES AND ADVENTURES OF THE MOST FAMOUS HIGHWAYMEN, MURDERERS, STREET-ROBBERS, &c. TO WHICH IS ADDED, A GENUINE ACCOUNT OF THE VOYAGES AND PLUNDERS OF THE MOST NOTORIOUS PYRATES. INTERSPERSED WITH SEVERAL DIVERTING TALES, AND PLEASANT SONGS. AND ADORNED WITH THE HEADS OF THE MOST REMARKABLE VILLAINS, CURIOUSLY ENGRAVEN ON COPPER

London. 1734.. [2],484,[2]pp. plus twenty-six plates. Folio. Contemporary calf, tooled in blind, rebacked, leather label. Extremities rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Light to moderate foxing and soiling. Some leaves with repairs at edges, not affecting text. Still, a very good copy. First edition of this great classic of lowlife literature. This work incorporates portions of Alexander Smith's HISTORY OF THE LIVES OF...HIGHWAYMEN, as well as Johnson's A GENERAL HISTORY OF...PIRATES, published in 1724 (and not to be confused with this rarer work) Johnson's works are generally ascribed to Daniel Defoe, but this volume was published ten years after Defoe's death, and it is not recorded by Moore as a posthumous publication. Perhaps someone else took on the Charles Johnson pseudonym, or perhaps Johnson himself actually existed. The section on the lives of the pirates comprises pages 197-316 and includes chapters on Mary Read, Ann Bonny, Black Beard, Captain Avery, Henry Morgan, and many more. The work is of Americana interest in that some of the exploits took place in North America. The illustrations include depictions of John Falstaff, Captain Avery, and Black Beard. There is a wealth of stories of English highwaymen, robbers, cutpurses, and thugs. A must-have for collectors of outlaw and pirate literature. NMM 4:274. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 734/111. HILL 892.         A Large Draught of the North Part of China Shewing the Passages and the Chanells into the Harbour of Chusan

London: William Mount & Thomas Page, [1734]. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition, apart from an expertly repaired centre fold, and mild creases where the map folded. 23 x 35 1/2 inches. A very fine sea chart of China's Zhejiang Province, from the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot' This elegant and large sea chart captures China's modern day Zhejiang province. Located on the East China sea, just below the Yangtze Delta, this region was of major interest to European traders during the eighteenth-century. It features the major port of Zhousan (Chusan), and was the location of the entrance of the Grand Canal of China. The canal, construction of which began in the 5th-century B.C., was then the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world, which allowed barges to travel hundreds to Beijing. In 1671, the London cartographer John Seller (fl.1664-97) commenced work on The English Pilot, a work that intended to challenge Dutch hegemony in the sea atlas market. Intended to be published in four books covering different regions of the globe, Seller published an uncompleted book on 'Oriental navigation' in 1675. Unable to continue this Herculean endeavour, Seller sold his rights to John Thornton, the official hydrographer to the English East India Company. Thornton took up the project with great fervour, publishing his first editions in 1689. Thornton did not publish his first edition of the Third Book, detailing navigation in the East Indies, until 1703. While Thornton largely based his charts on those of earlier Dutch cartographers, most notably those found in Pieter Goos' Zee-Spiegel and Lucas Janz Waghenaer's Mariner's Mirror, The English Pilot proved to be enormously popular. When John Thornton died in 1708, his brother Samuel took over the business and added to and modified existing charts. All four books were produced in editions until the 1760s, the Third Book ran into twelve editions up to 1761. The project succeeded in giving the English dominance in the sea chart market as the eighteenth-century progressed. Cf. Phillips, Atlases, 4278-36; Verner & Skelton (eds.), John Thornton - The English Pilot: The Third Book (Facsimile 1703 edition)

Later full straight-grain morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, author / title to second panel, place / date to third, remaining panels with central lozenge made up of flowers and leafy stem tools with volute and flower head corner pieces, covers with a triple fillet and dog-tooth roll border with a large armorial centrepiece with thistles to head and tail, double fillet to edges, elaborate roll to inner dentelles, a.e.g., with silk endpapers embossed with lions rampant and thistles. Johnson's identity is unknown, the work is often attributed to Daniel Defoe, see Moore's 'A Checklist of the Writings of Daniel Defoe', but Furbank and Owens 'de-attribute' it in their critique of Moore's checklist. The first edition in this format, (Johnson's 'Lives of the Pyrates' was first published a decade earlier), much of the material was taken from Smith's 'Live's of Noted Highwaymen, Robbers, Thieves and Pickpockets' (1714), to which was added the chapters on pirates. Uncommon, especially complete and in such wonderful condition. Moore 458; Furbank and Owens, pg 133; NMM IV:274. First Thus. Full Morocco. Very Good. Illus. by Basire, J.. Folio.

A Map of the British Empire in America with the French and Spanish settlements adjacent thereto

London: "Engrav'd by Willm. Henry Toms", [circa 1734]. Folio. ( 20 3/8 x 15 3/4 inches). Map engraved by William Henry Toms (with twenty-two integral inset views and plans), on 15 double-page and 5 single-page sheets, mounted on guards throughout, preceded by a folding double-page key map by Toms, with very fine full period hand-colouring throughout. Contemporary manuscript list of maps on front free endpaper with corresponding manuscript numbers in the top right corner of each map, two contemporary manuscript additions on sheet 6 at the entrance to Delaware Bay ("Cape May" and "Cape Hinlopen"). Contemporary English red morocco binding, the covers with elaborate border in gilt, built up from fillets, roll tools, and various small tools, expertly rebacked to style, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, overall repeat decoration composed of small tools in each compartment. A monument to the cartography of 18th- century America: a spectacular fully-coloured copy of the first large- scale map of North America, and the first printed map to show the thirteen colonies. Popple maps with full contemporary colour are exceedingly rare and exceptionally beautiful. The colouring allied with a contemporary English red morocco binding suggests that this copy was prepared for a high-status original owner. Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansion of English, Spanish and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and it's tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" (Goss The Mapping Of North America p.122.) The present copy of Popple's map, with its full contemporary hand-colouring, would have been particularly useful in these disputes. Mark Babinski in his masterly monograph on this map notes that 'The typical coloring of fully colored copies ... is described best by a contemporary manuscript legend on the end-paper affixing the Key map to the binding in the King George III copy at the British Library: "Green - Indian Countrys. Red - English. Yellow - Spanish. Blue - French. Purple - Dutch." The careful demarcation of the disputed areas by colour would have made the identification of whether a particular location was in one or another 'zone' a great deal easier. Thus the colouring adds a whole new dimension to a map that is usually only seen in its uncoloured state, and perhaps suggests that the copies with full hand-colouring were, in general, originally produced for some official use to do with the international land disputes of the time. Benjamin Franklin, on May 22, 1746, ordered two copies of this map, "one bound, the other in sheets," for the Pennsylvania Assembly. It was the only map of sufficient size and grandeur available - and the map is on a grand scale: if actually assembled it would result in a rectangle over eight feet square. Its coverage extends from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland to about ten degrees west of Lake Superior, and from the Great Lakes to the north coast of South America. Several of the sections are illustrated with handsome pictorial insets, including views of New York City, Niagara Falls, Mexico City, and Quebec, and inset maps of Boston, Charles-Town, Providence, Bermuda, and a number of others. "Henry Popple...came from a family whose members had served the Board of Trade and Plantations for three generations, a connection that must have been a factor in his undertaking the map, his only known cartographic work" (McCorkle America Emergent 21.) Babinski has made a detailed study of the issues and states of the Popple map. This copy, however, is an unrecorded variant issue (though resembling in many respects Babinski's 4a) without the engraved "1" in the upper left corner of the first map, with Searle's name removed from the imprint on sheet 20, with the manuscript additions at the entrance to Delaware Bay on sheet six, sheet 10 without the Georgia overslip or manuscript additions, etc. The key map is in Babinski's state 1, with only Toms' name below the border at the bottom and no additional place names in the 17 small insets. Hyde Bibliography of Swedenborg's works 228-30. Bibliotheca Walleriana 11018. Carl Gustaf Lewenhaupt ägde gården Aske i Håtuna socken i Uppland. Hans boksamling omfattade ca 10000 band och innehöll mycket historia, resor, genealogi och heraldik samt många ströskrifter från frihetstiden och gustaviansk tid. Grundstommen till biblioteket var ett arv efter Johan af Nordin

A Chart of the Coast of Guinea from Cape de Verde to Cape Bona Esperança

London: William Mount & Thomas Page, [1734]. Copper-engraved sea chart, in excellent condition. 19 x 22 3/4 inches. A very elegant sea chart of all of the west coast of Africa and one of the most important charts of the celebrated Third Book of 'The English Pilot' This very fine sea chart embraces the coast of Africa from Senegal all the way down to Cape Agulhas, past the Cape of Good Hope. The features of the coast are named in great detail, and the seas are elegantly traversed by loxodromes. The map is oriented with the east towards the top of the map, and a very beautiful cartouche surrounded by mermen and seashells adorns the upper left corner. Cf.
