SCHAAK, Henry van (1733-1825)
Two pages, with integral address panel, 4to. Henry van Schaak (1733-1825): banished from New York State during the American Revolution because of his Loyalist sympathies. He moved to Massachusetts, first settling in Richmond and then in Pittsfield. He was a close friend and correspondent of Philip Schuyler, James Duane, and several other New Yorkers. Reading: "Our friend the Doctor your colleague, how is he? I hope the house will have a full display of his political talents in this important crisis. My affectionate compl. To him. Good night God bless you all and believe me unfeignedly My dear sir Your sincere and obt. Servant H V Schaack." I hope you will be early in the house so as to secure a good seat - Let me beseech you to keep that inanimate (?) thing of a man who used to squeeze us so hard, at distance! I wo'd as soon sit near a Toad as that lump of stupidity. You know who I mean. I had rather be near a Knave than a fool - the former may divert me but the latter can pay no tribute of amusement -"

Many of Maclaurin’s theorems were discovered independently by Braikenridge, notably the Braikenridge–Maclaurin theorem: If the sides of a polygon are restricted so that they pass through fixed points while all the vertices except one lie on fixed straight lines, the free vertex will describe a conic or a straight line. A general statement of this appeared in 1735 in the Philosophical Transactions (no. 436), and a dispute at once arose regarding priority"] ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Moder hardcovers Small 4to (235x190 mm), viii-70-(2) pages . 1733. [ENGRAVINGS, HORACE, SETS ] (HORACE) PINE, John (Engraver) "QVINTI HORATII FLACCI OPERA" London. Johannes Pine. 1733 / 1737. First Edition; Second Issue (with 'postest' corrected to 'potest' on pp. 108 of Vol II) Two volumes octavo (5.5 in x 8.75 in). [32], 264, [3] ; [24], 191 [14] pp. Bound in fine, recent 1/2 crushed dark brown morocco over marbled boards. 6 compartment spine with double gilt ruled, raised bands. Contrasting label with gilt title. New endpapers. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT WITH BRILLIANT AND LAVISHLY ENGRAVED PLATES BY PINE. Save for the infrequent instance of offsetting, contents bright and clean. No apologies. Overall, fine. This edition is known by both scholars and knowledgeable collectors alike as being a masterpiece of 18th century book art. The list of subscribers is a testament to the esteem & quality of the work as the list of royal blood and noble lineage reads like a 'who's who' of the 18th century. The list counted among others, the Prince of Wales, The Holy Roman Emperor, King and Queen of Spain, the Prince of Orange, Edmund Halley, G.F. Handel, Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole, Jonathan Swift, and William Hogarth (who was a friend of the engraver). "the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved." - Gordon Ray, p. 3. "John Pine (1690-1756) may well have been the pupil of Bernard Picart, the great French engraver at Amsterdam: he was the best English engraver in the first half of the century. His edition of Horace is engraved throughout, text as well as ornament... "T … [Click Below for Full Description]

PER COLOUROS TROPICORUM, PER AMBOS POLOS ETB PARTICUL. SPHAERAE ZENITH IN PLANUM DELINEATI ORTHOGRAPHICI PROSPECTUS; QUIBUS ADDITAE PRO MUTATIONE HORIZONTIS DIFFERENTIS SPHAER, 1733. 49,5:57,2 cm. - Etwas knittrig. Jahrhunderts. - Sehr kräftiges Kolorit. Insgesamt noch ordentliches Exemplar der gesuchten Weltkarte.
