Edo, 1733. 3 series published in 20 volumes. 8vo (155 x 110mm). With numerous splendid woodcuts and descriptive text. Original stitched blue wrappers, with Japanese labels (preserved in a recent Japanese style cloth box). A rare complete set of this beautifully illustrated work on Japanese plants. "There are many other early Japanese flora which are of interest and importance because of their illustrations, but only a few can be briefly mentioned. The 'Chikinsõ' (summary of the earth's beauty) by Itõ Ihei, in 20 volumes, was published in three series between 1710 and 1733. It contains hundreds of illustrations of flowers, many in habitat groups with name tags attached to them. The illustrations vary considerably in quality between the series, but in general those of the first series are the best" (R.C. Rudolph. Illustrated botanical works in China and Japan, published in 'Bibliography & Natural History', Lawrence, Kansas 1966). The first series, 8 vols, was published in 1710, the second also 8 vols in 1719 and the remaining 4 are the supplementary vols, in 1733. The present copy agrees with Edgren, Catalogue of the Nordenskiöld collection, no. 802, were all volumes were published in 1733 'but this edition seems to have been published together with the supplement in 1733'. "The artist of this first series seems to have laid out a whole group of specimens (representing a habitat) more or less overlapping each other, and to have drawn all together. Each kind is represented with a nametag attached. The general effect is not unlike that of the illustrations in Parkinson's 'Parad … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contrasting label with gilt title. New endpapers. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT WITH BRILLIANT AND LAVISHLY ENGRAVED PLATES BY PINE. Save for the infrequent instance of offsetting, contents bright and clean. No apologies. Overall, fine. This edition is known by both scholars and knowledgeable collectors alike as being a masterpiece of 18th century book art. The list of subscribers is a testament to the esteem & quality of the work as the list of royal blood and noble lineage reads like a 'who's who' of the 18th century. The list counted among others, the Prince of Wales, The Holy Roman Emperor, King and Queen of Spain, the Prince of Orange, Edmund Halley, G.F. Handel, Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole, Jonathan Swift, and William Hogarth (who was a friend of the engraver). "the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved." - Gordon Ray, p. 3. "John Pine (1690-1756) may well have been the pupil of Bernard Picart, the great French engraver at Amsterdam: he was the best English engraver in the first half of the century. Potier de Courcy (I,206). [Click Below for Full Description]

Amberes: Viuda de H. Verdussen, 1733. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Otto Van Veen emblems - Impressive, folio engravings! Otto van Veen was a 16th-century Belgian emblematist who produced several different emblem books including 'Amoris Divini Emblemata' which first appeared in 1615. This book was a classic example of Van Veen's attention to detail in his illustrations through the use of humanistic views. According to Montone, Van Veen's emblem books, "functioned not only as a model for other Dutch and foreign emblem books but also as a source of inspiration for many artists in other fields." This rather curious early 18th-century Spanish printing of the emblems of van Veen is paired with two other famous Greek texts - 'The Tablet' by Cebes and 'Enchiridion' by Epictetus. Enchiridion by Epictetus is an advice manual focused on the Christian and Pagan philosophical circles of daily life. Written during the time of Socrates, 'The Tablet' by Cebes is a dialogue taking place in a temple between two individuals contemplating the representation of symbols and allegory in art found on a tablet. [Swift, Jonathan]
[London] Printed at Dublin, and Re-printed at London: J. Huggonson, 1733. First edition. Engraved device on title and headpiece. 28 pp. Folio. 'All Human Race wou'd fain be Wits, / And Millions miss, for one that hits'. First edition of this satire on Grub Street hacks which culminates in an attack on Sir Robert Walpole. Despite the imprint, there is no known Dublin edition. Swift's friend, the poet Mary Barber, conveyed the manuscript, along with "Epistle to a Lady" and others, to Matthew Pilkington, who later betrayed Swift's authorship. The Walpole administration considered arresting Swift for libel for lines in this and the "Epistle" but refrained, "upon being told that an army of no less than ten thousand men would be necessary for the arrest of the Dean of Ireland." The Hayward copy (lent by Harold Williams) contains manuscript verses recorded by Sir Walter Scott that "ought to have been inserted ... if it had been safe to print them" Foxon S888; Hayward 153; Rogers 869; Rothschild 2147; Teerink 741; Williams II, 639. In later drab wrappers. Title and final leaf soiled, foxed and frayed at edges, with short repaired tears, marginal soiling to first few text leaves, "11 Jany. 1733/4" on title-page in contemporary hand (published 31 December 1733 according to Foxon), and correction in ink to misprint, p. 4, l. 5.

ROUSSET DE MISSY (Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

BÉNÉDICTINS DE SAINT MAUR, RIVET, TAILLANDIER, CLÉMENCET
(1733) Brunet III, 205. [Click Below for Full Description]
