John Pine edition Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera Author: Horace - Quintus Horatius Flaccus, known in the English-speaking world as Horace, was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. The rhetorician Quintillian regarded his Odes as almost the only Latin lyrics worth reading, justifying his estimate with the words: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words." Horace also crafted elegant hexameter verses (Sermones and Epistles) and scurrilous iambic poetry (Epodes). The hexameters are playful and yet serious works, leading the ancient satirist Persius to comment: "as his friend laughs, Horace slyly puts his finger on his every fault; once let in, he plays about the heartstrings". Some of his iambic poetry, however, can seem wantonly repulsive. Publisher: John Pine City: London Year: 1733/1737 Binding Style: H … [Click Below for Full Description]

Picart, Bernard
Printed for Richard Ware at the Bible & Sun in Amen-Corner Warwick-Lane, London, 1733. First edition of this detailed visual guide to early eighteenth-century "modes:" hairstyles, costumes, and attitudes. A leading French engraver of his day, Bernard Picart depicts fashionable men and women in social contexts, providing a template for those struggling to capture the gestures and expressions of the moment: three plates are devoted to the proper positioning of the hands. The owner of this copy, John Lea Nevinson (1904-1985), was a founder of the British Costume Society and a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. A penciled inscription in his hand notes: "A later edition of this series, partly signed (and ? re-engraved) by B. Cole is numbered outside the ruled lines of each plate. Numbers here added in pencil." The four signed plates in this copy are by George Bickham and George Bickham, Jr.; five images are numbered in the plate inside the ruled borders. A near-fine copy of a scarce title, a drawing book for the drawing room. Single broadsheet volume, measuring 8 x 5.25 inches: engraved title page and twelve copper-engraved plates. Later pink and gold floral paper boards. Typed label identifying this copy as "NEVINSON LOAN 1979 No. 18" on front pastedown; penciled ownership signature of costume historian J. L. Nevinson to front free endpaper, dated 1953; penciled note to rear free endpaper. Penciled numbers and occasional smudge to margins of plates. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

George Cheyne
London : G Strahan, and J Leake, 1733 A fair to good copy of the 1st edition of this important work, in contemporary full calf binding. George Cheyne (1671-1743) was a scientist, mathematician and physician with a wide range of interests. He has particular interest in nervous diseases and this is his major work on the subject. This copy is classed as 'fair' because the binding, although complete, has wear to the spine and is splitting at the front spine joint. The boards are lightly speckled calf with gilt lining to edges and are bright and clean. There is wear to corners and edges. The spine, has raised bands with gilt lines and a damaged title label. The surface is scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of Wm Constable Esq FRS FAS of Burton Constable Hall, to the front pastedown. Contents: initial blank; title; dedication 4pp; Preface pp i- xvi; contents list pp xvii-xxxii; title page Part I; text pp 1-107; Title Part II; text 111-255; Title Part III; 259-370; Finis with one line erratum; Ads 6pp; final blank. Decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The contents are clean and sound with some toning, which varies in depth through the work.

HECQUET Philippe ((1661-1737).
Soleure & Paris: 1733. [HECQUET Philippe ((1661-1737)]. [HECQUET Philippe ((1661-1737)].
