[Click Below for Full Description]

Somers, John [Lord
1733. A Low Point in Somers's Career Somers, John, Baron [1651-1716]. The Argument of the Lord Keeper Sommers, On His Giving Judgment in the Bankers Case: Deliver'd in the Exchequer-Chamber, June 23, 1696. [London]: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, 1733. This case was an unfortunate moment in Somers's otherwise brilliant career. (He was an important Whig jurist, Lord Chancellor during the reigns of William & and Mary and Queen Anne and framer of the English Bill of Rights). "In the most important case which came before him in the exchequer chamber, that of the bankers who had recovered judgment in the court of exchequer for arrears of interest due to them as assignees of certain perpetual annuities charged by Charles II upon the hereditary excise as security for advances, he expended some hundreds of pounds and an immense amount of thought and research, with no better result than to defeat an intrinsically just claim, on the technical ground that it was not cognisable in the court of exchequer, but only by petition of right. No judgment so elaborate had ever been delivered in Westminster Hall as that by which, in November 1696, he reversed the decision of the court of exchequer.": (DNB). This decision was reversed by the House o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Horatius Flaccus, Quintus (Alexis de Tocqueville)
John Pine: London, 1733-37. First Pine edition of the collected works of ancient Roman poet and political figure Quintus Horatius Flaccus (Horace), "the most elegant of English eighteenth-century books in which text and illustrations alike are entirely engraved" (Ray). Alexis de Tocqueville received the gift as 17-year-old student on the occasion of an academic competition at the Lycee Fabert in Metz in which he received the first distinction in Rhetoric, first distinction in Latin translation, and second distinction in French Discourse with great commendation as is noted in the inscription. The leading Roman poet throughout the time of Augustus, Quintus Horatius Flaccus (Horace) created an extensive body of poetic works and became a leading spokesman for the Octavian regime after serving as an officer in the republican army during the Battle of Phillippi in 42 BC and befriending Augustus' primary political advisor, Gaius Maecenas. Horace's interrelation of poetry and politics made him a staple in classrooms through late antiquity; his influence extending beyond literature to dignify many of the core themes of the early Christian era such as self-sufficiency and inner contentment. Interest in his work was revived during the Age of Enlightenmen … [Click Below for Full Description]

MURR, Christoph Gottlieb von.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 638; Löwendahl 718; Walravens 132. First and only edition of a publication of primary documents and notes concerning China in general and the Jesuits in China in particular, written and compiled by the remarkable Nürnberg Unitarian scholar Christoph Gottlieb von Murr (1733-1811). The full-page woodcut in Chinese giving a Linnaean classification of Chinese quadrupeds is the first Linnaean classification of Chinese animals and probably the first Linnaeana of any sort in Chinese. In 1706, at the height of the Chinese Rites Controversy, the Kangxi Emperor appointed two Jesuit missionaries as his envoys to Rome, but both died when their ship capsized off the coast of Portugal. In 1708 he appointed two new envoys, who died in 1711 and 1720. In 1716 the Emperor issued an edict on 31 October: a circular letter to all Westerners in China, noting that no word about the four envoys had been received and that there had been no response to the Emperor's enquires, and that the Imperial government therefore could not place its trust in any communications from the West. The rites issue lead the Emperor to expel Catholic missionaries from China and severely damaged Sino-European relations. In fine condition. The back board is very slightly rubbed and the letterpress spine label is slightly worn, but the binding is otherwise also fine. A fine copy of an important work on China and the Jesuits there, by an excellent and versatile scholar.
