John Pine's Latin text was published in two volumes in 1733 and 1737 and was based on Talbot's edition of 1699. Pine's edition is remarkable for illustrating the text entirely by prints from engraved copper plates. He lavishly filled decorated the book with numerous engraved initials, head and tail pieces, text illustrations and full-page frontispieces for each volume; all in the Rococo style. A fine and elegant 18th-century engraved book made by Pine who was a pupil of Picart and England's most accomplished native engraver during the 18th century. Alessandro Galilei - Rocco Pozzi
Stampa su foglio unico che misura cm 52x74. Reca come indicazioni di responsabilità "Alessandro Galilei inventò e disegnò. Rocco Pozzi Romano incise". Bella stampa incisa finemente.

Swift, Jonathan, attributed
London: [Benjamin Motte for] J. Roberts, 1733. First edition. Engraved device on title, engraved headpieces. 19, [1] pp., with half-title. Folio. "Nearly as much mystification surrounds the publication of the poems as its authorship" (Foxon) "This poem is included in the Swift canon, partly on the evidence of Mrs. Letitia Pilkington who, in her Memoirs, claimed that her husband, Matthew Pilkington, had negotiated its publication on Swift's behalf, and partly on internal evidence. Swift himself denied authorship ..." (Rothschild). The poem bears resemblance to Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift (1739), in which Swift similarly treats Rochefoucauld's maxim ("He says, 'Whenever Fortune sends / Disaster, to our Dearest Friends, / Although, we outwardly may Grieve, / We oft, are Laughing in our Sleeve"). With a dedication by the printer -- signing as "L.M." -- to Alexander Pope, whom Foxon suggests as a possible author of the poem. Foxon S884; Teerink 727; Rogers 844; Rothschild 2143; Williams II, p. 541. Modern marbled wrappers. Leaves extended at inner margins, light creasing, soiling to verso of final leaf.

Horace] Horatius Flaccus, Quintus
Londini London: Iohannes Pine ; 1737, 1733. First issue of the sole edition, with "Post Est" rather than the correct "Potest" engraved around the Caesar medal (vol. 2, p.108). 2 vols., 8vo., pp., (xxxii), 176, [ii], 177-264, [ii]; [xxiv], 48, [ii], 49-94, [ii], 95-152, [ii], 153-172, [ii], 173-191, (xvi). Entirely engraved by John Pine, with frontispieces, title vignettes, 8 full-page illustrations, culs-de-lampe,and 4-line opening initial to each poem. Vol.I has a small intermittent stain to the lower margin near the gutter, a handful of upper corners creased, occasional light foxing. Contemporary dark brown calf, gilt spines with red and green title labels (the green possibly replaced or sympathetically retooled), all edges red. Spines rubbed with tail of vol.II quite worn, joints neatly repaired, a few scuffs, endpapers a little toned, a very good copy. Armorial bookplate of Francis Eyre (c.1732-1804) of Warkworth to front paste-down. Eyre was a Roman Catholic apologist and arbitrator, publishing several works in his lifetime including, in 1778 and 1779, pamphlets 'criticizing Edward Gibbon's irreligiosity in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' (ONDB). A serviceable copy of the most sumptuous edition of Horace. Each page of the work was entirely engraved; the text had two frontispieces, 27 individual headpieces, and individual vignette illustrations and initials numbering respectively a colossal 324 and 164 respectively.
