BACON, Roger.
London: William Bowyer, 1733. Folio (368 x 222 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, orange morocco label, red speckled edges. Shelfmark to pastedown. Very minor rubbing, short splits at joint ends though still firm, light toning to title page, contents with a few instances of faint soiling but generally clean and bright, small chip to first folding table. A very good copy. 2 engraved folding plates and folding table. First edition, one of 30 large paper copies; William Bowyer's records show a further 220 copies were printed on smaller paper. Roger Bacon wrote the Opus Majus, his most important work, in the 1260s, but it went unpublished until the present edition. Samuel Jebb used the manuscript held by Trinity College Cambridge, resulting in the seventh part, absent in the manuscript, being omitted. The full seven parts were not published until 1897, seven centuries after its composition. The Opus Majus stands as one of the supreme philosophical and scientific achievements of the Middle Ages. "Bacon believed that the innate wisdom granted to humanity by divine authority could only be developed through reason backed by experience. Experimental science was to be used to certify conclusions of deductive reasoning in the existing speculative sciences, to add to existing sciences new knowledge unobtainable by deduction, and to investigate the secrets of nature beyond the bounds of the existing sciences. Bacon stressed the usefulness of mathematics in both human and divine affairs, as mathematics alone gave absolute certainty" (Norman, p. 37). [MACKERELL (Benjamin)]
First edition, 4to, (227 x 170 mm), 54pp., some light staining and dust soiling, cont. manuscript additions and alterations to the text in ink, bound in later full vellum.Benjamin Mackerell (bap. 1685, d. 1738), Antiquary, Librarian, and Plagiarist. "In addition to his career as an antiquary, Mackerell is worth remembering for the work he undertook in his unpaid office of Librarian of the Norwich Public Library, between 1721 and 1732, and possibly later. This collection was already more than a century old, when Mackerell was first admitted to membership in 1715. The following year, he presented the library with a copies of Davila's History of France and Grimston's History of the Netherlands both in folio. The Norwich City Library was founded in May 1608, when the Norwich Assembly set aside three rooms in the New Hall in St Andrew's parish for the provision of a library for local preachers. No funds were made available for book purchases however other than the provision of a donor's book. Gifts of books were soon forthcoming, particularly from the aldermen and other city dignitaries, and by 1617 more than one hundred and twenty volumes had been added to the collect. Over the next three centuries, the library continued to operate, although its fortunes tended to wax and wane. After the initial enthusiasm following it establishment, the collection was neglected and the library shut up, until 1657, when it was revived by the Presbyterian Minister John Collinges. Similarly, a further period of neglect towards the end of the century, was followed by the appointment of an enthu … [Click Below for Full Description]

CASSINI Jacques;
[Click Below for Full Description]

Voltaire
Letters Concerning The English Nation Voltaire C. Davis London, 1733 "HIS MOST IMPORTANT EARLY PHILOSOPHICAL WORK... THE FIRST BOMB HURLED AGAINST THE ANCIEN RÉGIME": SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF VOLTAIRE'S LETTERS CONCERNING THE ENGLISH NATION, 1733 First edition of Voltaire's commentary on English institutions, published one year before the French first edition, the first published work to relate the tale of Newton's falling apple. Voltaire ("an approximate anagram of the name Arouet") fled to England in 1726 following arguments in Paris with powerful political figures, "where he remained till early 1729, learning English, reading Shakespeare, Milton and the Restoration dramatists, making the acquaintance of Walpole, Congreve, Gay, Berkeley and associating with Bolingbroke, Pope, and Swift" (Harvey & Heseltine, 753). "Much struck by the admirable English phlegm and toleration of free thought and eccentricity, he wrote the Letters, the most sympathetic of critiques" (PMM 204). "He became an ardent apostle of the science, tolerance and common sense of England. These resulting Letters form his most important early philosophical work. The book has been called the first bomb hurled against the Ancien Régime. In its high praise of English institutions it leaves no doubt that Voltaire is attacking, by ironic contrast, French despotism and the corruption of the French Church. The book created such a scandal that it was soon condemned and copies burned by the hangman in June, 1734. A warrant was issued against Voltaire but he succeeded in escaping. VOLTAIRE, (FRANCOIS-MARIE AROUET de). - [A KEY WORK OF THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY]
London, C. Davis and A. Lyon, 1733. 8vo. Contemporary Cambridge-style boards with lovely blindstamped borders. Corners worn. Expertly rebacked with five raised bands, gilding and gilt title-label. Very ligt brownspotting or dusting to some leaves. Armorial book plate to inside of front board (Richard Perryn Esq.). Perryn's owenership signature to title-page. A large copy with good margins, printed on heavy, fine paper. (16, -including preface, contents, advertisements), 253, (1), (18, -Index) pp. ¶ The important actual first edition of this highly celebrated key work of the Enlightenment, in which the anecdote of how Newton discovered gravity (the story about Newton and the falling apple) appeared for the first time, together with the description of the difference between the physical world view of the English and the French (the "plenum" and the "vacuum") . This seminal work, in which Voltaire famously depicts British philosophy, science, society and culture, in comparison to French, can be viewed as the Enlightenment equivalent to Tocqueville's "Democracy in America". This series of essays, which is based on Voltaire's experiences when living in England, was actually written by Voltaire mostly in English, which he mastered to perfection. It has often been presumed that the first edition of the work was that published in French in 1734, but actually, the present English edition constitutes the actual first appearance of the work as well as the version that is closest to Voltaire's intention, as the French language version is the re-written one, and the English version the … [Click Below for Full Description]

A truly royal copy of Eisenberg's famous riding school, which boasts beautiful illustrations of horses and horsemen (repeated from the 1727 first edition), engraved by B. Picart. They are exceptionally fine animals, especially those from the hills of Mokha [...] Arabian horses are full of fire and vigour in general and are possessed of a great natural agility [...] Their start is like lightning, and so they are incomparable for racing and tournaments, for they are skillful as well as swift". Baron Eisenberg was one of the most famous equestrians of his day and served royalty throughout Europe as a riding instructor. - Wants a single plate (no. 37, "Le Superbe") and explanatory text (passage in a straight line after the German fashion), otherwise an excellent copy in full near-contemporary colour. SODOMY TRIALS
(1730-1733). A very rare collection of seven pamphlets related to the sodomy trials in eighteenth century Holland (and one other). The infamous sodomy trials in the village of Zuidhorn acquired particular infamy as Grietman Rudolf de Mepsche of Faan used the occasion to persecute his many political enemies by accusing them of sodomy. The pogrom resulted in a total of 22 people sentenced to death and executed, after two more had died at the rack. See D.J. Noordam, Riskante relaties. Viif eeuwen homoseksualiteit in Nederland, 1233-1733; Bound together in a contemporary 1/4 leather binding, wear to spine and marbled boards, front hinge cracking, but internally very good. ITÔ IHEI.
Edo, 1733. 3 series published in 20 volumes. 8vo (155 x 110mm). With numerous splendid woodcuts and descriptive text. Original stitched blue wrappers, with Japanese labels (preserved in a recent Japanese style cloth box). A rare complete set of this beautifully illustrated work on Japanese plants. "There are many other early Japanese flora which are of interest and importance because of their illustrations, but only a few can be briefly mentioned. The 'Chikinsõ' (summary of the earth's beauty) by Itõ Ihei, in 20 volumes, was published in three series between 1710 and 1733. It contains hundreds of illustrations of flowers, many in habitat groups with name tags attached to them. The illustrations vary considerably in quality between the series, but in general those of the first series are the best" (R.C. Rudolph. Illustrated botanical works in China and Japan, published in 'Bibliography & Natural History', Lawrence, Kansas 1966). The first series, 8 vols, was published in 1710, the second also 8 vols in 1719 and the remaining 4 are the supplementary vols, in 1733. The present copy agrees with Edgren, Catalogue of the Nordenskiöld collection, no. 802, were all volumes were published in 1733 'but this edition seems to have been published together with the supplement in 1733'. "The artist of this first series seems to have laid out a whole group of specimens (representing a habitat) more or less overlapping each other, and to have drawn all together. Each kind is represented with a nametag attached. The general effect is not unlike that of the illustrations in Parkinson's 'Par … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

VOLTAIRE.
London: C. Davis & A. Lyon, 1733. Octavo (197 x 128 mm). Recent quarter calf, smooth spine divided by blind rules with brown label lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Recent pencilled ownership inscription to new front free endpaper. Title page very lightly soiled, a few blemishes to contents, else an excellent copy. First edition, the first in any language of Voltaire's work, with the French edition, printed in Amsterdam, appearing the subsequent year. Voltaire's great admiration for the English people and their system of government was developed during his exile in the country in the 1720s. He was deeply impressed by the respect given to Newton at his state funeral, to the toleration given to the Quakers, and to the British mixed system of government, and wrote the book with the strong implication that England provided a model for French reform. The Letters are one of the key productions of the Enlightenment and remain one of Voltaire's most famous and widely read works. Voltaire's enthusiastic writings on Bacon, Locke and Newton aided in bringing these individuals, with their empirical methods, into the French public eye, where they were a major influence on the Enlightenment's moderate, non-Rousseaun wing. A scarcer issue with two final advertisement leaves is also known without known priority. ESTC T137614; Sabin 100751. [Attributes: First Edition]
