Andrew Le Mercier
Boston: S. Gerrish. 1732 Full paneled contemporary calf 8vo: [12], 220, vi, 76, [4]. Lovely early American binding in excellent condition: supple leather with handsome tooling, some wear to outer joints and inner hinges split but boards are still firmly attached with cords. In very good condition with stamp to front pastedown. Foredge of page 181 apparently torn by the printer's pressure, with the tear running down the right margin. Previous owner's signatures to flyleaf and title page, else clean and unmarked. Rare. Very Good.

The book is illustrated with illustrations, fold-out maps, geneological family trees, etc. Some of the fold-out material has rips and tears due to its fragile nature. Volume II: Has the following written on the back of the title page in faded pen: William Mungale Bought from John Renney's Widow The first page has the following written in the middle: John Renne Merener Falkirk Has Book Bought at Londen 1769 Prys. S. Pou The boards have some wear with frayed/damaged corners and spine edges and general scuffing. The front cover is still attached to the binding, but only near the middle, having partially split at the top and bottom. The first free page is missing. The title page has some damage and is missing some parts and looks like it has been pasted onto another sheet for backing. BERKELEY, George.]
London: printed for J. Tonson, 1732. London: printed for J. Tonson,, 1732. In seven dialogues. Containing an apology for the Christian religion, against those who are called Free-thinkers. 2 volumes, octavo (201 x 124 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, spines lettered in gilt, compartments tooled in gilt, raised bands, double fillet frame to boards in gilt, edges sprinkled red. With the advertisement leaf to vol. I. Engraved vignette illustration to title page, engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. Engraved armorial bookplates of Lord Sandys to front pastedowns. Joints cracking but firm, some loss to spine ends and corners bruised, lettering to spine of vol. II chipped off, lettering to vol. I mostly present, endpapers browned from turn-ins, a few fore edges rough (leaves C4, N1, N4), else a very good copy. First edition, inscribed "from the author" on the title page. George Berkeley (1685-1753) wrote Alciphron, a set of philosophical dialogues, in an attempted rebuttal of the insurgent secular intellectual trends of the early enlightenment. Countering the views of John Locke, Bernard de Mandeville, and the third Earl of Shaftesbury, who collectively manifest as the conceited free thinkers Lysicles and Alciphron, Berkeley uses his characters Euphranor and Crito to defend traditional Christianity and his own idealist epistemology. A revised version of Berkeley's seminal work An Essay towards a New Theory of Vision (first published in Dublin in 1709) is included at the end of the second volume as issued.

Basileae (Basel): Joannis Rodolphi Im Hoff, 1732. Nova Editio (New edition). Hardcover. g- to vg. Folio (15 1/2 x 10 1/2"). [2] leaves (Half-title, title page), [2] leaves (Privilege), 20pp (Preface), [2], [20]pp (Schulten's Oratio funebris), 710pp (Text) (Vol. 1); [2] leaves (Half-title, title page), 12pp (Preface), 958pp (Text), [54]pp (Index) (Vol. 2). Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Title pages in red and black lettering. Title vignettes. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Originally published in Leeuwarden in 1714 (Vol. 1) and 1720 (Vol. 2), this two volume set commentary on Isaiah is Campegius Vitringa's magnum opus. It forms the basis for the commentaries of J. E. Leigh (1726-34), J. J. Rambach (1741), and A. F. Bsching (1749-51). The celebrated German orientalist, and Biblical critic Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Gesenius (1786-1842) was particularily emphatic in its commendation; declaring that [the book] not only made an epoch in the study of Isaiah, but outweighs the earlier and a good part of the later expositions. In wealth of philological and exegetical learning, aptness of illustration, and fulness of historical information, Gesenius declares that Vitringa's Commentary on Isaiah is by no means superseded. In the first volume a double page map with descriptive text illustrating Moabite territory in the Dead Sea region follows page 458. Binding partly darkened/soiled and age-toned. Some abrasion to head and tail of spine. Foxing to endpapers. Front free endpaper, half-title and title slightly creased. Minor and sporadic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bon exemplaire, ouvrage rare.

London: printed for J. Tonson, 1732. 2 volumes, octavo (201 x 124 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, spines lettered in gilt, compartments tooled in gilt, raised bands, double fillet frame to boards in gilt, edges sprinkled red. Engraved vignette illustration to title page, engraved head- and tailpieces, initials. Jessop 121a; Keynes 15.
