Swift, Jonathan.]
London: printed for J. Roberts, 1732 - London: printed for J. Roberts, 1732. 19(1) pp. 4to, bound last in a volume of five poems, as described below, recent half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco label. First edition. This rare poem was also printed at about the same time in Dublin, under a quite different title: The Grand Question Debated: Whether Hamilton's Bawn should be turn'd into a Barrack or a Malt-House. George Faulkner's edition purports to have been published "according to the London edition . . . printed by A. Moore," but this is an invention. The London and Dublin editions were if fact taken from two different manuscript sources, and display a good number of variant readings. This humorous poem had its origin in a visit by Swift in 1729 to the country estate of his friend Sir Arthur Acheson, where there was a debate going on about whether to convert a "bawn," an enclosure with stone or mud walls, into a barracks for lease to the government, or into a malt-house. "The charm of the poem is felt in every part of its construction. . . . Much of the pleasure of the verses derives from the skill of Swift's mimicry. . . . His old trick of making spontaneous colloquial speech fall effortlessly into metrical units gives line after line its relish. . . . In the way of genial satire, he rarely wrote a better poem." -- Ehrenpreis, Swift, III, pp. 624-5. The poem circulated for a time in manuscript, and a copy fell into the hands of Faulkner, who arranged for it to be printed in London without Swift's authorization; the Dublin printing followed shortly afterwa … [Click Below for Full Description]

NECKER JACQUES

Boerhaave (1668-1738) "was the most distinguished teacher of his time. One of hist most important works is the treatise on chemistry, which was based on notes of his lectures, but was afterwards revised by himself" (Ferguson I, 112). - Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig, Vorsätze mit Wurmspuren und Siegelresten. BIBLE - SINHALESE]. PHILIPSZ, Henricus (translator).
- Darlow & Moule 8306; Landwehr, VOC 739 (4 copies); WorldCat (1 copy). Rare first edition of the first Sinhalese translation of the Book of Exodus, printed by the VOC (Dutch East India Company) at their printing office in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The Dutch brought a printing press to Ceylon for missionary purposes in 1732 and Gustaaf Willem baron van Imhoff (1705-1750) Dutch governor of Ceylon from 1736 to 1740, had a printing office set up at Colombo, its first book (a Sinhalese prayer book) appearing in 1737. The reverend Henricus Philipssz (1733-ca. 1791) born in Ceylon, studied theology in Utrecht and returned to Ceylon in 1756 as minister of the churches there, living near Colombo. He began a long series of translations of scripture, beginning with the Acts of the Apostles in 1771, inaugurating a much more active period for the press. His first ventures with the Old Testament were the first five books: Genesis (1783), the present Exodus (1786), Leviticus (1787?), Numbers and Deuteronomy (1789?), all very rare. These remained the only published Sinhalese translations of the Old Testament, until Tolfrey completed his Sinhalese Bible in 1823.Lacking the final blank leaf. With a water stain in the lower half throughout and traces of former mildew (treated) in the lower corners of the first few and last few pages. Otherwise in good condition. The covering of the boards shows numerous small surface cracks but is now stable and the binding structurally sound. A rare pioneering effort in the publication of the Sinhalese Old Testament and milestone in Sinhalese printing.

LAKENMAN, Seger.
1732. V.d. Aa XI, pp. 40-41; STCN 184404789. First and only edition of a brief treatise by Seger Lakenman on reinforcing the dikes of West-Friesland, now the northern part of the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. The dikes were dangerously weakened because "sea worms" were voraciously eating their wooden piles. In 1732 the States of Holland and West-Friesland proclaimed a contest for a better type of dike. Lakenman responded with the present work, suggesting, among other things, the construction of a new inner dike, a so-called "inlaagdijk", and also including the estimated costs. His proposal, however, was rejected by the States. On the title-page Lakenveld is mentioned as the secretary of "Drechterland", a small community in the Dutch province of North Holland. Some marginal thumbing, a few small stains, and the plates very slightly browned, but otherwise in good condition, with the edges wholly untrimmed. Edges of the marbled paper wrappers slightly frayed, but otherwise good. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

(JACOB, Hildebrand)
London [i.e. Edinburgh]: printed for J.R. in Warwick-Lane. 1732 24pp. 8vo. Some light browning. Disbound. From the Library of Douglas Grant. ESTC T73139; Foxon J33 noting that the ornaments are those used by Ruddiman. BL, Nat Lib Scotland, and Bodleian in the UK; 10 copies in North America. Hildebrand Jacob, 1693-1739, was the eldest son of Sir John Jacob of West Wratting, Cambridgeshire. In 1720 he published a clever but indelicate poem, The Curious Maid, which was sometimes attributed to Prior and was frequently imitated. In the following years he produced a stream of anonymous ribald poems, not all of which he acknowledged in his collected works (1735). His own son, Hildebrand, was also a writer and described by Sir John as an 'indelicate poet' and not likely to marry in his lifetime, if ever. He succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his grandfather on 31st March 1740, and made his seat at Overwell, Gloucestershire; he also owned houses in London and Ewelme, Oxfordshire. He was rather eccentric. It is said that in early life, as soon as the weather was fine and the roads good, he would set off with his manservant and very little luggage, 'without knowing whither they were going'. When it drew towards evening they enquired at the nearest village whether the great man in it was a lover of books, and had a fine library. If the answer was in the negative, they went on farther; if in the affirmative, Sir Hildebrand sent his compliments, that he was come to see him, and there he used to stay till time or curiosity induced him to move on&a … [Click Below for Full Description]
