The Spanish expedition to Oran, to prevent further piracy. 1732 & 1733. Lisbon. Oficina de Pedro Ferreira Impressor da Serenissima Rainha N. S. In 4to (195 mm x 135 mm). 20 pp. + 2 ff.; 16 pp. Modern calf. Old ink manuscript foliation (\"248-259\") in upper outer corner of the recto of each leaf; light toning; second part with minor worming in upper margins, affecting a few letters of text on 4 leaves; small worm traces in outer margins, negligible in first and final leaves, repaired in the other leaves, but never affecting textFirst editions. Rare works on the Spanish expedition against Muslim Oran (North Africa). After a survey of the history and geography of Oran (in modern Algeria), Freire de Monterroyo Mascarenhas describes the preparations for the expedition to recapture Oran, the Spanish leaders, and the Spanish naval and military attacks on sites in and around Oran in June and July 1732. The captain-general of the expedition was José Carrillo de Albornoz, first Duke of Montemar, who had fought in the War of the Spanish Succession and the War of the Quadruple Alliance; at this time he was viceroy of Sicily. Facing p. 20 is the plan of battle for the Spanish forces. The map on the verso shows the harbour at Oran, the town, and half a dozen fortresses surrounding it, as well as the position of the Spanish navy during the battle. The final leaf has the legend for the map on its recto, with the verso blank. Freire de Monterroyo Mascarenhas explains in the dedication that he compiled this account from many shorter accounts, because the public was eager to learn about the reconquest. Oran (in modern Algeria, west of Algiers), which was in Spanish hands since 1509, had been captured by the Turks in 1708, while Spain was occupied with the War of the Spanish Succession. Spain held the city from 1732 until 1792, when it suffered a massively destructive earthquake and King Charles IV handed the city back to the Ottoman Empire. To find both parts together is extremely rare, especially with such fine provenance.Provenance: Dukes of Palmela library, with their monogram beneath the ducal coronet stamped in purple ink on title page. Kirkall, 4 engraved plates, decorative woodcut headpieces and initials, pages: [2], xvi, [4], 358, [2], the second part A General Description of Arabia, beginning on page 273 has a separate title page with the imprint "London, 1718", register is continuous. The very rare first English edition appeared in 1718. The second part was translated by de la Roque from the Arabic of Ishmael Abulfeda, a 14th century sultan who reigned for a time in Syria. Laurent d'Arvieux (1635?1702) was a French traveller and diplomat born in Marseille who spent 12 years in the Levant (1653 - 1665), and subsequently acted for the French government on a number of diplomatic missions. In 1672 he was sent to Constantinople and in 1679 he was appointed French consul at Aleppo. He familiarised himself with the languages of the regions he resided in, and learned to speak Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew and Syriac languages. As well as the topics listed in the title, d'Arvieux describes food and eating habits, clothing, marital customs, hospitality, respect for the beard, courts of justice and forms of law, employment and trade, horses, medicine, and funerals. The plates which are all in the first part depict an Arab horseman, The Grand Emir, The Camp of the Arabs on Mount Carmel near the city of Caifa, The Princess Wife of the Grand Emir. The second part of this work is a general geographical description of the Arabian Peninsular followed by brief descriptions of the principal cities starting with Mecca and Medina.         Les Avantures de Jacques Sadeur dans la découverte et le voyage de la Terre Australe

Amsterdam: David Mortier, 1732. Small octavo; contemporary French mottled calf, spine panelled in gilt between raised bands, red morocco label, a few bumps, hinges starting but still firm, an attractive copy, with the bookplate of Bernard Gore Brett. French edition. Attractive early edition of Foigny's imaginary voyage to Australia. This is the fourth French edition, based on the Paris edition of 1692. First published in 1676, the sexual undertones of this famous imaginary voyage led to the publication of the bowdlerised edition of 1692, and this censored version became the standard text for the next century or more. The author Foigny was a defrocked Franciscan, who was successively exiled from Picardy, Geneva, Lausanne, and Bern, and spent many years destitute and being investigated for immorality. It was no doubt his persecutions which led Foigny to write in the introduction that he was merely the editor of a manuscript he had been given by the protagonist Jacques Sadeur.

Aubry de la Mottraye was a French traveller (c. 1674 - 1743) who lived for many years in England because of his religion (he was a Huguenot). In 1696 he set off on travels which were to last 26 years, initially to the Scandinavian countries where he became a close confidant of Charles XII; he then went on to Tartary, and to Turkey where he settled for some years in Constantinople. When he returned to England he received a pension from King George I and published the first two volumes of his book in London in English in 1723. These two volumes were not translated into French until 1727. He then continued his travels taking in Prussia, Russia and Poland and his descriptions formed a third volume which was first published in 1732 in English and also in French. There was a second edition of the English 2 volume set in 1730 but all the English editions are rare, especially the third volume. The plates are all by English engravers depicting architecture, antiquities, costumes, scenes and customs. Some of them were engraved by William Hogarth but all of those are missing from this set. Cox, Literature of Travel, Volume I, page 78 quotes Lowndes: "Veracity and exactness, particularly so far as regards the copying of inscriptions, characterise these travels. They are valuable also for the information respecting the mines of northern Europe". On page 221 in the near East section: "Motraye's close association with the unfortunate Charles XII of Sweden... makes him an authority of the first rank on the Scandinavian's sojourn in Turkey. The life of the miserable king of Hungary, Tokoly, whom Motraye sought out in Nicomedia, could be rewritten with the aid of this tireless reciter's account. Besides he was a good witness of all that went on in Turkish society at Constantinople and elsewhere." (quoted from Iorga, Les Voyageurs Francais"). Cox does not list the 1732 first edition of Volume III, only an edition of 1733 published at the Hague. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.

David Mortier, Amsterdam 1732 - Small octavo; contemporary French mottled calf, spine panelled in gilt between raised bands, red morocco label, a few bumps, hinges starting but still firm, an attractive copy, with the bookplate of Bernard Gore Brett. SECOND EDITION 1732, 12mo, approximately 170 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, engraved frontispiece by E. Kirkall, 4 engraved plates, decorative woodcut headpieces and initials, pages: [2], xvi, [4], 358, [2], the second part A General Description of Arabia, beginning on page 273 has a separate title page with the imprint "London, 1718", register is continuous. Bound in full early calf, blind ruled border to covers, rebacked to style with raised bands, blind rules and blind ornaments in compartments, original endpapers. Corners of covers just slightly worn, small dark stain to upper cover, armorial bookplate to front pastedown, with the name of another owner below it, an early inscription to front endpaper with the remains of another bookplate, some pages very lightly age-browned, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. The first part of this work consists of a portion of d'Arvieux's Memoirs edited and published in Paris by Jean de la Roque in 1717: "Voyage fait par ordre du roi Louis XIV dans la Palestine vers le Grand Emir". The very rare first English edition appeared in 1718. The second part was translated by de la Roque from the Arabic of Ishmael Abulfeda, a 14th century sultan who reigned for a time in Syria. Laurent d'Arvieux (1635–1702) was a French traveller and diplomat born in Marseille who spent 12 years in the Levant (1653-1665), and subsequently acted for the French government on a number of diplomatic missions. Sevilla: Pedro Joseph Diaz , 1732. Sevilla: Pedro Joseph Diaz , 1732. Sevilla: Pedro Joseph Diaz . . . , 1732. Sm. quarto, modern plain wrappers. Leaf of title, verso blank; dedication to Isabel Farnesse, verso blank; 1p. advertencia del traductor; pp.6-59 text in Italian and Catalan on facing pages. The book is printed with charming typographical execution, in keeping with Spanish typography of the time with printed borders and with illustrated initials, cul de lampe, and headbands. A libretto of a splendid horse ballet in 1731 in Parma on the occasion of the arrival of the young and future king of Spain, Charles III. Originally printed in Italian in Parma, 1731, this edition features a facing text in Catalan and entirely new ornaments and borders. The solemn entry took place in Parma 9 October 1731 and was accompanied and followed by spectacular festivals. Based on the Aneadi of Virgil, this horse ballet depicts the arrival of Ascanio in Italy with interezzi of songs, sounds, allegorical paintings, etc. The ballet was directed by Carlo and Jacopo Vercellini, "cavallerizi" of the court, scenario by Pietro Righini, student of Bibiena. The ballet was repeated on the 15 of October. This event has a special significance, because it was one of only nine events held in the Teatro Farnese, and the last major event to be staged there. Teatro Farnese, considered one of the most beautiful historical theatres in Italy, was built in 1618-19 by the Ferrarese architect G. B. Aleotti. The architect based his design on Palladio's theatre Olimpico in Vicenza. Built for royal festivities, the theatre was used sparingly. It was renovated by Juvarra in the early 18th century, but fell into a state of disrepair after the last performance in 1732, and then was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944. The imposing wooden doorway of the Teatro Farnese is now the entrance to the National Gallery. Reference: Watanabe-O'Kelly 1131 & 1132. OCLC: No North American locations.
