The State Of Justice Impartially Considered [bound with] A Short...

1732. Rare Essay on Injustice Bound with a Warning About Standing Armies [Justice]. [Great Britain]. The State Of Justice Impartially Considered. By The Civil, Natural, And National Law. With Some Curious Admonitions For The Use Of Drousy Bishops, Sleepy Judges And Stupid Magistrates. Wherein The Great Delay Off Justice Is Fully Exposed. London: Printed by E. Rayner, for the author, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster, [1732?]. 47, [1] pp. [Bound with] Trenchard, Thomas [1662-1723]. A Short History of Standing Armies in England. London: Printed in the Year 1698. And Now Re-Printed and Sold by W. France, 1731. 70 pp. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlets bound into recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-edged raised bands to spine. Light toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, light foxing to a few leaves. Excellent copies in a handsome binding. * State of Justice: only edition; Short History: reissue of a title issued three times in 1698. The anonymous author of The State of Justice positions himself as an opponent of bribery and the sale of offices and sinecures and a supporter of an equal distribution of justice and the rule of law. He warns: "It is not the law alone that makes a right government, but upright justice, and the equal distribution of it, which ought to be deeper engraven in the hearts of those who are authorised to execute justice, than in tables of stone" (9). It is a learned, and somewhat cranky, essay filled with references to Roman, European and English history. Trenchard's Short Essay is a classic argument against standing armies, a central theme in the commonwealthmen tradition (that was quite influential in America). This issue was probably a reaction to the expansion of England's military establishment during the Anglo-Spanish War (1727-29) The State of Justice is a rare title. OCLC locates 6 copies worldwide, 4 in North America (Case Western Reserve University, Harvard Law School, Northwestern Law School, UNC-Chapel Hill). The ESTC adds the University of Kansas. English Short-Title Catalogue N23107, T126898.

Small inkstamp to title page. A nice copy. * Second edition. As Cowley has pointed out, A New Law-Dictionary was both Jacob's masterpiece and "an entirely new departure in legal literature" that provided a model for several subsequent efforts. In contrast to earlier works, each entry summarizes all of the laws relating to the subject and offers extensive interpretive commentary. Obsolete terms are omitted. It was recognized almost immediately that Jacob created a highly useful legal encyclopedia that was more detailed and concise than any other abridgment of the period. An extremely popular work that went through twelve editions between 1729 and 1800, it offers unparalleled insights into Anglo-American law during the eighteenth century. Woodcut initials. Woodcut and typographical headpieces. Large woodcut tailpieces. Another contemporary ink signature on verso of plate. Engraved bookplate of Freitas Simões. Frontispiece, (13 ll.), 320 pp. [pp. 57-64 misnumbered 87-94], (16 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION. Monravá e Roca was a colorful and controversial figure of eighteenth-century medicine. Born in Pons (Catalonia), he studied in Barcelona, Valencia and Lérida, where he received his degree. After working in Spain for ten years he travelled to Portugal and accepted the chair in anatomy at the Hospital de Todos os Santos, Lisbon. There his merits as well as his defects proved so great that no one could regard him with indifference: some called him a charlatan, a few a scatter-brained genius. In 1732, just before this work appeared, Monravá e Roca lost his position to Bernardo Santucci. He maintained a surgical practice in Lisbon and enjoyed considerable fame in that field.Monravá e Roca also established a school of his own, the Academy of the Four Sciences, at which he taught anatomy, surgery, medicine and natural sciences. Ferreira de Mira states that it was founded in 1739 and was closed by government order two months later. On the title page of this 1732 work, however, Monravá e Roca calls himself "Presidente Fundador da nova Academia das Quatro Sciencias," and Innocêncio comments that the school continued to draw students until its founder died in 1753.The Academicas oraçoens seem to be essays by students of Monravá e Roca; the eighth oração, for example, is entitled "Phisiologico-medica oraçam VIII sobre tres quimeras dos medicos, que dice Miguel Gonzalves Gliz, discipulo Academico da Nova Academia, Phisico-Anatomico-Medico-Chyrurgia do Hospital Real de Todos os Santos de Lisboa Occidental, no Introito de hum acto de Conclusoens, que defendeo" (p. 214).The frontispiece (unsigned) depicts an operating room during a surgical procedure, within an allegorical border representing the four disciplines of Monravá e Roca's Academy. The first leaf of the final section of 16 unnumbered leaves begins with two sonnets addressed to Monravá e Roca by his students Manoel dos Santos Ferreyra and Paulo Teyxeyra. The fifteen leaves that follow contain an index.Provenance: Fernando de Freitas Simões (1896-1972), distinguished Portuguese physician and important book collector. His library was dispersed through sales by Christie's London (1974?) and Arnaldo Henriques de Oliveira of Lisbon (1976), through private sales by the sons of his first wife, and by his second wife.*** Lisbon, Faculdade de Medicina, Catálogo da collecção portuguesa I, 190. Palau 176721. Aguilar Piñal V, 5386: citing only the copy at Biblioteca Nacional de España. (4),1065,(23) pp.Third edition, first published in 1687. - Biography of one of the most famous admirals in Dutch history, Michiel Adriaenszn. de Ruyter (1607-1676), also of great interest for Dutch political and economic history. Dealing with the early voyages to Jan Mayen Island (whaling), Morocco (Barbary Coast), during this time his esteem grew among other Dutch captains as he would regularly free Christian slaves by redeeming them at his own expense, and the Baltic: he managed to liberate Nyborg in 1659, for this he was knighted by the Danish king Frederick III of Denmark. After he recaptured Guinea on the English in 1664 he crossed the Atlantic to raid the English colonies in America. Visited the Caribbean islands, delivered supplies to the Dutch colony of St. Eustatius, and was engaged in Spanish-Dutch sea-fights and conquests. Giving the damage he had sustained at a certain moment he decided against an assault on New York to retake New-Netherland. He fought the English in the first three Anglo-Dutch Wars. His most famous exploit was against the English fleet: the Raid on the Medway in 1667. He sailed up the Thames to Chatham and burned three ships and captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles, which he took with him back to Holland. It was a costly and embarrassing defeat for the English. On 18 March 1678 De Ruyter was given a state funeral when his body was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. He was succeeded as supreme commander by Cornelis Tromp in 1679. De Ruyters' flagship De Zeven Provinciën is being rebuilt in the Dutch town Lelystad. Cat. NHSM II, p.44; Sabin 7405; European Americana V, B701/48.

Histoire des papes, depuis St. Pierre jusqu'à Benoît XIII inclusivement. 5 Bände.

Den Haag, Scheurleer, 1732-34 - Mit gestochenem Frontispiz und 5 gleichen Titelvignetten. Ledereinbände der Zeit mit reicher Rückenvergoldung. Erste Ausgabe. – Hoefer VII, 669. Cioranescu 14395. Reusch II, 139. – Dekorativ gebunden. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A New Drawing Book of Modes.

Oblong sm. London: Richard Ware, [1732]. Oblong sm. 8vo, engraved title and 12 engraved plates numbered 2-13. Retrospective marbled boards binding retaining the original red morocco label on the upper cover. Short vertical tear to the title-page not affecting the text and with no loss. Otherwise a fine copy. First edition of this detailed visual guide to hairstyles, costumes, even gestures or postures of early 18th-century London. The plates were engraved by Bickham, Cole, and Picart himself. Charles B. Wood is the only record found of a copy selling in the last 50+ years. He noted: “A charming little drawing book which is in fact partly a pattern book of hair and hat syles as well as showing modes and attitudes of posture and behavior. In this respect the work is something of a courtesy book. The plates were engraved by George Bickham Jr. and B. Cole (these two signed their plates) as well, presumably, as Picart, who did not sign his plates. Picart was a prolific author and engraver; the UCBA catalogue lists 17 works by him, including the present. Both the Colas and Hiler bibliographies list several works on fashion by Picard but not the present title. A little book of much charm and appeal. NUC locates but one copy, the Clark Library at UCLA.”

[The three celebrated plays of that excellent poet Ben Johnson].

London: Pr. for J. Walthoe, G. Conyers, J. Knapton, et al. 12mo (16.8 cm, 6.6"). Frontis., 96, 96, 100, 35, [1] pp., without the general title-page.. 1732 Volpone, The Alchemist, and Epicoene: Or, the Silent Woman: Three of Jonson's most popular and enduring comedies, happily followed by "A True and Exact Catalogue of All the Plays and Other Dramatick Pieces, That Were Ever Yet Printed in the English Tongue, in Alphabetical Order." The plays were also issued separately; and while the title-page giving "The Three Celebrated Plays of That Excellent Poet Ben Jonson," published by W. Feales, is not present here, the presence of => the Volpone plate (engraved by Jan Van der Gucht) and several pagination errata seem to indicate that this is indeed Feales's omnibus edition. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate (a crowned lion rampant, billetty) labelled "A.C.J.L." Binding: Contemporary speckled calf framed and panelled in blind with roll-bordered panel in plain calf, blind-tooled corner fleurons. Binding as above, rebacked some time ago with mottled calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled raised bands, and gilt floral decorations in compartments; upper corners refurbished, edges and extremities rubbed, hinges (inside) cracked, volume holding. A copy without the general title-page, and with bookplate as above. First and last few leaves (including frontispiece) with offsetting to margins from pastedowns; back free endpaper with a corner torn away; pages age-toned, with some instances of mild foxing. => A nice 18th-century look at Jonson, with the bonus of the contemporary theatrical catalogue.

[from "Twelve Months of Fruit"]. London: Robert Furber, 1732. Copper engraving by Henry Fletcher after Casteels, contemporary hand-colouring. Good condition, neatly repaired tears to margins. A marvellous cornucopia of real fruit. Robert Furber was a nurseryman with gardens near Hyde Park gate in Kensington, and for many years a churchwarden at St. Mary Abbot's, Kensington. Following on from the success of his Twelve months of Flowers catalogue (first published in 1730), Furber employed the same methods two years later, when publicising the wide range of fruit that he could provide to the great gardens of England: each plate depicts different arrangements of fruit 'arranged on or around bowls, dishes, or baskets ... from the apples and pears of January and February to the cherries, currants, mulberries, plums, peaches, strawberries, and other soft fruit of June ... [A total of 364 varieties] are shown, each one numbered in reference to the names printed below each picture. By the name of each variety is a letter S, D, E, or W, for standard, dwarf, espalier, or wall, and indicating its habit of growth and most productive method of treatment' ( Oak Spring Pomona p.65). This plate (like all the others in the series) is based on the incomparable paintings of Pieter Casteels (1684-1749) who came from Antwerp and settled in London in 1708. Between 1708 and 1735 (when he retired from painting) Casteels enjoyed great success with his paintings of nature: birds, flowers and, as here, fruit. Cf. Dunthorne 117; cf. Henrey III, 734; cf. Nissen BBI 765; cf. Oak Spring Pomona 26.

Recueil de plusieurs Plans des Ports et Rades et de quelques Cartes particulières de la Mer Méditerranée,

[Paris or Marseille?] , 1732-46. avec les figures des Terres remarquables pour les reconnoissances des Atterrages Â… Quarto (335 × 256 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, raised bands, red morocco label to the second compartments, anchor devices gilt to the other five, edges sprinkled blue. Engraved title, 4 folding engraved charts, and 75 double-page, of which 10 are coastal profiles. Somewhat rubbed, and with skilful restoration to the board edges, joints, and head and tail of the spine; tan-burn to the endpapers, folding map of Marseilles with clean tear, no loss, professionally repaired, light browning throughout, occasional marginal staining, but overall very good. First and only edition of this uncommon collection of charts, including the first printed chart of Monaco, a large folding map of Marseilles, and accurate charts of most of the ports, harbours and bays of the region. Ayrouard's work forms a working "waggoner" for the coast, recording soundings, anchorages, and pilotage notes on rocks and reefs, and includes a series of coastal profiles as a further aid to navigation. This pilot would subsequently be drawn on by numerous hydrographers, most notably William Heather who cites Ayrouard in his New Mediterranean Pilot of 1802. Ayrouard dedicates the work to Jean Frédérick Phélypeaux, comte de Maurepas, secretary to the royal household and minister of the navy in the court of Louis XV, who was prominent in attempts to introduce a more scientific approach to naval affairs until he was exiled in 1749 for writing derogatory epigrams about the king's mistress, Madame de Pompadour. The Conseil de la Marine, for whom this work appears to have been produced, had been founded in 1720 as a central depository for maps, plans, journals, and memoirs relating to navigation. Of the hydrographer Ayrouard, little is known beyond the brief details he gives on the title where he describes himself as "Royal pilot of the King's Galleys," and explains that these charts were prepared by him on voyages that he undertook on the coast, leading him to add further pilotage notes for the safe entry into certain of the harbours and roads ("avec les Remarques necessaires qu'il faut observer pour l'entrée á Certains Ports et autres Endroits"). Similarly, the engraver of these superbly-detailed charts, Louis Corne, was known to Tooley solely from this work. It is possible that this was a local production, perhaps produced in Marseille, hydrographer and engraver brought together under the aegis of the Conseil de la Marine to produce this pilot for the benefit of visiting French naval ships. Scarce: OCLC records just six copies outside France.

He was born at Marseilles, studied oriental languages, made some voyages to the Levant himself and served apparently, as correspondent to his father's newspaper... the captain who tells the story of the first voyage in a series of five letters, proves to be Captain Monsieur de Marveille .... But he does not go on the second voyage. The account of that trip was put together by La Roque from information furnished by M. Grelaudiere, who journeyed from Mokha to Muab to cure the King of Yemen, and two ship surgeons, Noiers and Barbier. (Hunt). cf. Hunt, 489; Hünersdorff, Coffee: A Bibliography, p1284.

[North America] To the Right Honourable John Lord Sommers...this Map of North America according to ye newest and most exact observations ..

London: "Sold by H. Moll ... I. Bowles ... T. Bowles ... P. Overton ... and by John King ...", 1732. Copper-engraved map, period handcolouring in outline. Inset view of a codfishery, ten inset maps of various harbors. Moll's great "Codfish" map of North America Hermann Moll was, like many an emigré, a zealously patriotic Englishman and cartographical fighter in the globalization contest the European nations conducted from the 15th century into the 20th. Here in one of his superbly characteristic maps of North America, he fights with De L'Isle (the great French mapmaker of the period) about the respective territorial possessions of Britain and France. In contradistinction to De L'Isle's 1718 map, Moll's reduces French Louisiana to a region south of the Ohio River and gives Great Britain Labrador (as New Britain). The achievement of British dominance would be accomplished through trade, colonialization, war and piracy. Depicting one aspect of British success, Moll includes here a rather detailed depiction of the codfishing industry, including the making of cod liver oil. Throughout the 17th century, the British had the greatest number of fishing boats in the Grand Banks. Dried codfish was a staple of the British Navy, and a favorite throughout Europe. As naval supremacy requires good charts, this map has ten inset charts of important North and South America ports: from Boston to Cartagena. And finally, for the benefit perhaps of any would-be British privateer , Moll includes (as he did in his map of the West Indies) detailed information about the annual Spanish convoy that wound around the Gulf of Mexico picking up silver, gold and gems from South and Central America. Moll's "maps of North America and the Eastern Seaboard must have played an important role in shaping the geographical perception of the Americas held by his contemporaries, emphasizing the untaped resources and the wealth of the colonies, and the opportunities for any that would make the passage" (Baynton-Williams). The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, A New and Compleat Atlas . Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseatic port city of Bremen, Germany. Joining a number of his countrymen, he fled the turmoil of the Scanian Wars for London, and in 1678 is first recorded as working there as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas. It was not long before Moll found himself as a charter member of London's most interesting social circle, which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill. It was at this establishment that speculators met to trade equities (most notoriously South Sea Company shares). Moll's coffeehouse circle included the scientist Robert Hooke, the archaeologist William Stuckley, the authors Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, and the intellectually-gifted pirates William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and William Hacke. From these friends, Moll gained a great deal of privileged information that was later conveyed in his cartographic works, some appearing in the works of these same figures. Moll was highly astute, both politically and commercially, and he was consistently able to craft maps and atlases that appealed to the particular fancy of wealthy individual patrons, as well as the popular trends of the day. In many cases, his works are amongst the very finest maps of their subjects ever created with toponymy in the English language. This copy an issue published around the time of Moll's death, with the imprint including John Bowles located "at the Black Horse" (1732 and later).         [Twelve Months of Flowers]

Kensington: Robert Furber, 1732. Folio. (24 3/8 x 19 1/4 inches). Mounted on guards. Engraved throughout, list of subscribers (sheet size: 22 5/8 x 18 5/8 inches) with hand-coloured engraved decorative border, 12 hand-coloured plates by Henry Fletcher after Casteels (approx. sheet size: 21 2/4 x 17 3/4 inches). Expertly bound to style in 18th-century diced russia, covers with decorative roll at outer border, the flat spine divided into ten compartments with a greek-key roll flanked by pairs of fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, repeat decoration of a large flower-spray tool surrounded by small tools Rare complete first edition of this ground-breaking and highly decorative flower catalogue: an incomparable record of the most fashionable flowering plants of the early eighteenth century, here with the title/subscribers' page and fine contemporary hand-colouring. Furber was a nurseryman from Kensington, then on the outskirts of London. Twelve Months of Flowers presented almost 400 different flowering species, grouped according to the month in which they flower. Reflecting in style the grand manner of the Baroque period, the flowers are arranged in elaborate bouquets and placed in elegant urns. Next to each flower appears a number, which corresponds to a name in the key printed at the bottom of the plate on either side of a cartouche inscribed with the name of one of the months of the year. "Twelve Months was conceived as a flower catalogue, but its commercial function was adroitly veiled and the artistic quality of its illustrations distinguishes it from the more modest pamphlets generally produced by floriculturalists, including Furber himself, in this period. For the work, Furber sought the collaboration of Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), an artist from Antwerp who had achieved great renown throughout England for his paintings of birds and flowers, which decorated the walls of many aristocratic homes. Casteels designed the series of twelve floral plates, which were then engraved by Henry Fletcher, an artist well known for his engravings of famous paintings and portraits. The plates were designed to be afterwards coloured by hand, as they are in the present and the Oak Spring copy" ( Oak Spring Flora pp.145-146). The leaf which precedes the plates is engraved and printed on the recto only with a combination of subscriber's list (with a list of over 430 wealthy subscribers), dedication and title page (with the title of the work and the names of the authors). This page is framed by a wide border including a number of the showier flowering plants, including tulips, irises and many auriculas, a very popular flower at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Many new species were cultivated and, like the tulip a century earlier, named after a famous contemporary or classical figure, such as the "Earl of Derby", "Artemesia" or "Ascanius." One of the remarkable features of each of the twelve plates, is that despite "their great profusion, every flower in these compositions is readily identifiable. They range from native species to exotic specimens from America: Furber records that he received various specimens from Mark Catesby, 'a very curious gentleman from Virginia' ..." ( op. cit. ).
