ALBIN, Eleazar
London Printed for the author: and sold by William Innys in St. Paul's Church Yard; John Clarke under the Royal-Exchange Cornhill; and John Brindley at the King's Arms in New Bond-Street -1734, 1731. First edition, first issue. 3 volumes, 4to., (12 x 9 3/4 x 3 inches) [8],96,[4]; [8],92,[2]; [8],95,[1] pp., 306 etched plates with original hand-colour, captioned in Latin and English within the plate mark, a few plates cropped, occasional light soiling, generally a clean well margined copy, contemporary mottled calf, covers with broad gilt borders, sometime expertly rebacked preserving richly gilt spines, red and green morocco labels, neat restoration to some corners, edges rubbed, an excellent set. The first British bird book to use coloured plates. "For the most part Albin delineated one bird per plate. The birds are placed on a branch or on the ground, each part coloured. The proportions of the birds are a distinct improvment on those in Willoughby and Ray . Albin produced his paints in a rather strange manner according to Petiver's account. For his reds he washed and dried vermilion pigment in four waters and then proceeded to "grind it in boys urine three times, yn [then] gum arabic it and grind it in Brandy wine." Whatever his methods and however singular the contribution by his sons, this very first effort at colouring plates depicting birds is highly commendable and the results were gratifying, for the book was popular." nd. bifolium. Docketed "Govn. Shirleys Rough Messa. to the Represen...". 7-1/2 x 6 inches. About fine, old folds. Closed tear, removed. bifolium. Docketed "Govn. Shirleys Rough Messa. to the Represen...". 7-1/2 x 6 inches. WILLIAM SHIRLEY AND CROWN POINT. Shirley's Rough message to the Massachusetts General Court and House of Representatives reads in part: "Gentlemen of the House of Representatives, I cannot in faithfulness to the great interest of this or all of the neighboring Provinces in the success of the designed expedition against Crown Point neglect to let you know that I am fully fixed in my opinion that such an Army as will be employed in this service cannot be under any good management without the appointment of a Quarter Master General & an Adjutant General..." Born at Preston Manor in East Sussex, England, William Shirley arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1731, seeking to reverse recent financial losses. After a decade of political maneuvering, his family connections, which included ties to the Duke of Newcastle, led to his commission as Governor of Massachusetts. Shirley would spend the next 15 years in the colonial administration of North America, devoting almost half that time waging war against the French and their Indian allies. Shirley is probably best known for organizing the successful Siege of the French fortress at Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia, during King George's War, but his larger strategic vision for the defeat of New France also included the capture of Fort St. Frédéric at Crown Point, on … [Click Below for Full Description]

(JOHNSON, Samuel.)
Oxford: Printed by Leon. Lichfield, 1731. Octavo in half sheets (205 x 121 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, sometime recornered and rebacked with original spine laid down, red speckled edges. 19th-century engraved armorial bookplate of W. J. Humfrys (a Hereford solicitor). Spine showing some craquelure, sides rubbed, title page a little dusty, leaves Q4, S1-4 and T3-4 trimmed by the binder (shaving a few headlines), scattered foxing, yet still an appealing copy, clean and sound. First and sole edition, celebrated for including Samuel Johnson's first appearance in print and the mention of him in the preface as "a Commoner of Pembroke-College in Oxford". Johnson spent only thirteen months at Pembroke (October 1728 to December 1729), forced to leave through financial constraints. His stay may have been short but the nineteen-year old Johnson made a strong impression on his fatherly tutor William Jorden. The distinguished biographer Walter Jackson Bate relates that "within a few weeks Jorden, by now quite aware of his pupil's talents, suggested that he translate, as a Christmas exercise, Alexander Pope's poem Messiah (1712) into Latin verse. The premise of Pope's Messiah is the medieval belief that Virgil's Fourth Eclogue, which predicts the birth of a child who will bring a golden age, is a prophecy of Christ. [Johnson] plunged into the translation with extraordinary speed. These 119 lines [pp. 111-117] of Latin verse would have been an impressive performance if they had taken a month or even two. But he wrote half of them in one afternoon, according to [his former schoolmate] … [Click Below for Full Description]

Desfontaines, Abbé Pierre-François Guyot.]
Printed for Sam. Harding, at the Bible and Anchor, on the Pavement in St. Martin's-Lane, London. Small octavo, two volumes: pp. [1-6] i-iv 1-10 i-vi 1-212; [1-2] i-iv 1-198; collates A5; a8, B-I8; K-O8; P2; A3, A-I8; K-M8, N3, rebound to style in modern quarter leather and marbled boards by the Dragonfly Bindery. First edition in English. The French original of Desfontaines' LE NOUVEAU GULLIVER OU VOYAGE DE JEAN GULLIVER, FILS DU CAPITAINE GULLIVER, Traduit d'un Manuscrit Anglois par Monsieur L. D. F., was published in 1730, three years after he had translated Swift's TRAVELS into French. His sequel was quite popular, going through three editions the year of its publication. Besides being translated into English, JEAN GULLIVER was translated into Dutch, German (three times in 1731) and Portuguese. In his preface, Desfontaines discarded the fiction of his work being a translation and defended himself against the charge of exploiting the success of Swift's work. He pointed to the originality of his adventures in their settings and morals. "? the reader will be convey'd into one country where the fair sex have the superiority; a second whose men soon grow old, and enjoy but a very short life; a third whose inhabitants, tho' superlatively deform'd and ugly, do nevertheless appear handsome in the eyes of their countrymen; lastly, another whose natives are indulg'd a long life, and the advantage of returning to the bloom of youth, when they have attain'd to half their years." Derham, William.
Sixth Edition. London, W. Innys, 1731. Octavo. [16] lvi [8] 246 pages,[10] [3 foldout engravings]. Original Hardcover / bound in contemporary panelled calf. The book has been sympathetically rebacked to style. Besides a spot of hard green adhesive to the front board in very good condition. The armorial bookplate of Dr Blackett appears on the first pastedown. The text is complete and clean with the three foldout engravings of the cosmos to the rear, a little archival paper restoration to one of the engravings. William Derham FRS (26 November 1657 - 5 April 1735) was an English clergyman, natural theologian and natural philosopher. He produced the earliest, reasonably accurate estimate of the speed of sound. William Derham was the son of Thomas Derham. He was born at Stoulton, in Worcestershire, England. He was educated at Blockley, Gloucestershire and at Trinity College, Oxford from 1675 to 1679. He was ordained on 29 May 1681. In 1682, he became vicar of Wargrave, Berkshire and from 1689 to 1735 he was Rector at Upminster, Essex. While at Upminster, in 1716 he became a Canon of Windsor and the vestry minutes show that thereafter he divided his time between those two places. The parish registers of Upminster record his burial at St. Laurence’s in 1735. However, the precise site of his grave is unknown and, in accordance with his wishes, there is no memorial to him in the church. In 1696, he published his Artificial Clockmaker, which went through several editions. The best known of his subsequent works are Physico-Theology, published in 1713; Astro-Theology, 1714; and Ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

(ca. 1840) med rygforgyldning og forgyldt skindtitel. 143,(1) pp. 158 pp. Nogle få brunpletter, ellers er begge værker i god stand. "… the reader will be convey'd into one country where the fair sex have the superiority; a second whose men soon grow old, and enjoy but a very short life; a third whose inhabitants, tho' superlatively deform'd and ugly, do nevertheless appear handsome in the eyes of their countrymen; lastly, another whose natives are indulg'd a long life, and the advantage of returning to the bloom of y … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thirty-two folding engraved plates & one folding printed table. Title in red & black. 8 p.l., xlviii, [12], 193 pp.; 192, [14] pp. Two parts in one vol. Large 4to, cont. calf (joints very slightly rubbed), spine nicely gilt, contrasting morocco lettering piece on spine. Leyden: J. & H. Verbeek, 1731. First edition. This book contains the first description of the pyrometer, an instrument for measuring the expansion of solid bodies under the influence of heat. Like many of Musschenbroek's books, the Tentamina contains fine illustrations and is concerned with experiments in measuring humidity, magnets and electricity, air pressure, the structure of ice, heat and cold, capillarity, optics, the motion of sound, etc. Musschenbroek (1692-1761), professor of natural philosophy and mathematics at Utrecht and, later, professor of experimental physics at Leyden, was one of the most celebrated physicists and most important investigators of his time. The experiments described in his books have become classics in elementary instruction. "Underlying Musschenbroek's lectures demonstrated with experiments was the experimental philosophy...the principal source of inspiration was Newton, but Galileo, Torricelli, Huygens, Réaumur, and others were important to this school."-D.S.B., IX, p. 596. First edition of more than one of the well-known Maqâmât or Sessions of al-Harîrî, published by the Leiden Arabist Albertus Schultens (1686-1740) during his post as the first Interpres Legati Warneriani. He was appointed to the post in Leiden, together with a teaching post as a lector of Oriental languages, in 1729, thereby ending his Professorship at the University of Franeker. It seems that Schultens's predecessor J. Heyman had already started work on this edition, but seemingly had not made any progress. In 1732 Schultens was appointed professor at the University of Leiden. The translation of the first Consessus is by Golius, as published in his edition of Erpenius's grammar of 1656. In 1740 Schultens published the second part (in all six Sessions, out of 50), together with a selection of texts on pre-Islamic Arabia (Monumenta vetustiora Arabiae). histoire ou vie tirée des monumens anecdotes de l'ancienne Egypte. [Click Below for Full Description]

DUVERNEY, [Guichard Joseph].
A Leide [Leiden]: Chez Joh. Arn. Langerak, 1731. Second edition. The first scientific account of the structure, function and diseases of the ear. "Duverney was the first to depict the arteries, veins, and nerve branches of the auricle, the first to demonstrate that the bony part of the external auditory meatus originates from the annulus tympanicum, and the first to describe and illustrate the communication between the tympanic cavity and the cells of the mastoid process. He corrected a long-standing error by stating that the Eustachian tube was not an organ of breathing or hearing..." (Norman). Duverney pointed out that sound is conducted by the bones of the skull, and first suggested the theory of hearing later developed by, and accredited to, Helmholtz. See G&M 1545 and 3351 (first edition of 1683). For a full account of this book's content and importance, see Stevenson & Guthrie, pp. 38-39, and Politzer, History of Otology pp. 117-124: "...a milestone in the science of otology..."12mo, pp. (xxiv), 196, (7) Langerak's catalogue, and 16 folding engraved plates.
