1731. Click here to view a short video presentation. Antiquarian architectural interior design studies.(Architectural drawings with color hand applied by artist when drawing was rendered). The pencil drawing with sienna red and mustard yellow color is attributed to Felix J. Duban, 1823 winner of the prestigious annual Prix de Rome in architecture. The wall shows classical figures within an ornate paneled and fresco-style decorated neo-classical interior wall, and indeed he worked on the restoration of several important monumental castles and chateaux where work such as this would have been required. The second design ink drawing is much earlier and two sided. On the reverse in early manuscript pen is neatly written "Profil pour la chiminee du cabinet de toillete de Madame de Beaupre, suivans les dessein d'autre pars donne par le Sr. De la Force le 24 g-bre 1731Both original works of art are clearly very old, one mid-18th century, the other early 19th century, both by skilled trained hands. Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the pair. Minor light toning and small staining as typical for images of this vintage, perhaps small minor paper flaws, but to our eyes and for most people, both remain fascinating historical documents in entirely acceptable and very nice looking condition. Smallest measures c. 13 1/2" x 9 1/4". Largest measures c. 19 1/4" x 13 1/2".[V1108].

Original folds just visible, toned beneath the mat, very good. The magnificent 'Magnolia' plate from Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America and "the most famous colorplate book of American plant and animal life" (Hunt). From 1722 to 1726 Catesby traveled the Southeastern colonies gathering sketches and specimens. Upon his return to England he spent almost 20 years preparing his magnum opus. The richly colored and visually striking engraving of the Magnolia is among the most famous of all the 220 plates in the finished three volume work, one of just three contributed by Ehret. This impression is from the 1771 third edition, considered the best for the quality of the coloring. Hunt 486 (first edition). [Attributes: First Edition]

Terrasson Jean
[Design and Architecture]; Jones Inigo, et al
[London]: by I. Ware, ND [ca. 1731]. First Edition, and absolutely one of Ware's first significant productions. With a handsome engraved title, notes and contents and 53 fine engraved plates on 48 sheets, 6 of which are folding. 4to, in full antique mottled calf, the spine with raised bands double-ruled in gilt and with gilt lettering on a gilt tooled brown morocco label, the board edges gilt ruled. 5 pp., + 53 plates. A very handsome copy, quite fine and pleasing, the plates all crisp and clean with some light toning at the edges as would be expected, the binding in fine condition as well. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. ISAAC WARE'S EARLIEST CONTRIBUTIONS TO ARCHITECTURAL PRINTING AND DESIGN. The plates were engraved by Fourdrinier from Ware's renderings on the works of three architects, Inigo Jones, William Kent and Lord Burlington. According to the verso of the title-page, "Most of these designs are already executed, and the rest are at Burlington House." The renderings are an elegant depiction of moldings, ceilings, fireplaces, chimneys, garden ornaments, staircases, etc., and notably Burlington's design of the entrance to Chiswick House. This work predates by several years the work that is arguably Ware's greatest accomplishment, his English translation of Palladio's FOUR BOOKS OF ARCHITECTURE. The format of the present work, easily usable by professionals in the field and by a large field of working craftsmen, was no doubt influenced heavily by Burlington.

With a frontispiece of a Turkish infantryman. Walpole was the first British Prime Minister, and held the position for twenty years. This pamphlet was published in 1731, and has been regarded by critics to be an attack on Walpole with the ESTC notes on this work support this view. Duveen [p. 561], Neuville [II p. 509 : "important work. DUVERNEY, [Guichard Joseph].
Second edition. The first scientific account of the structure, function and diseases of the ear. "Duverney was the first to depict the arteries, veins, and nerve branches of the auricle, the first to demonstrate that the bony part of the external auditory meatus originates from the annulus tympanicum, and the first to describe and illustrate the communication between the tympanic cavity and the cells of the mastoid process. He corrected a long-standing error by stating that the Eustachian tube was not an organ of breathing or hearing..." (Norman). Duverney pointed out that sound is conducted by the bones of the skull, and first suggested the theory of hearing later developed by, and accredited to, Helmholtz. See G&M 1545 and 3351 (first edition of 1683). For a full account of this book's content and importance, see Stevenson & Guthrie, pp. 38-39, and Politzer, History of Otology pp. 117-124: "...a milestone in the science of otology..."
