The History of of the High Court of Parliament. London, 1731.

1731 - Early History of the High Court of Parliament [Gurdon, Thornhagh (1663-1733)]. The History of the High Court of Parliament, Its Antiquity, Preheminence [sic] and Authority; and The History of Court Baron and Court Leet, A Chronological History of Them From the Earliest Times Drawn Down to the Present. Together with the Rights of Lords of Manors in Common Pastures, and the Growth of Privileges the Tenants Now Enjoy There. London: Printed for R. Knaplock, 1731. Two works in one; The History of Court Baron and Court Leek has separate title page. Two volumes. Octavo (5" x 8"). Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands, lettering piece. Wear to board edges and spine ends, corners bumped, joints starting. Front free endpaper lacking from Volume Two. Attractive woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Early armorial bookplates to versos of title pages (of first work). Wear to endleaves and preliminaries with some loss, dampstaining to lower half of text blocks. Still a solid set. * This important early history includes a subject index and an interesting index of the books and manuscripts used by the author. "In this historical account of the government of England, of its senates and councils or parliaments, I take a cursory view of them in other nations, as introductory to the British, Saxon and Norman national councils or Parliaments, and so gradually slide down from Antiquity to modern times, shewing the conformity of modern with ancient constitutions; how ancient Laws and Decrees have been, some of them confirmed, some amended, and some totally abrogated, according to the wisdom of the several ages, thereby in a short history giving the reader a large view into times past.": Preface, Volume One, v-vi. The second work treats the history of two early feudal courts. Court Baron arbitrated dealings between the lords of manors and their tenants. Court Leet was a court held by the right of franchise in which a private lord oversaw land under a sheriff's jurisdiction. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) I:839. Lisbon: Officina Ferreiriana, 1733. [16],102,[1]pp. Internally clean and fresh, with minor worming in lower margin of final seven leaves. Both titles in very good condition. The second edition of Galvao's history of exploration and voyages, after the virtually unobtainable first edition of 1563. According to Sabin, this second edition "is also rare, the greater portion having been destroyed by an earthquake." Galvao's text was translated in 1601 by Hakluyt, who complained about the rarity of the first edition even then, and had to rely on a copy sent from Lisbon. Currently, only three copies of the first edition are known, including one at the John Carter Brown Library. Born in 1503, Galvao was sent to India in 1527, and after distinguishing himself there, he was appointed governor of the Moluccas. He maintained a keen interest in military and religious affairs throughout his career, and spent the latter part of his life assembling accounts of the voyages that comprise this collection. He provides a relatively succinct chronological list of ancient and modern discoveries to the year 1550, including those by Columbus, Cabral, Cortés, and Pizarro. "The author has been styled 'the founder of historical geography.' The book gives a good summary of the geographical explorations of the Portuguese and other important voyagers, including the English" - Hill. Bound with Galvao's TRATADO... is the second edition Francisco Moreno Porcel's biography and critical appreciation of the Portuguese poet and historian, Manuel de Faria y Sousa (1590-1649), enlarged from the first edition of 1650. Faria y Sousa is known for his enormous commentary on Camões' OS LUSIADAS, his historical writings on Portuguese expansion, and his own poetry. A key collection of voyages, here in the first obtainable edition, bound with a contemporary edition by the same publisher of a biography of the historian of Portuguese expansion, Faria y Sousa.

Jos. Ricchino Malatesta e Ph. Argelati)

nel Regio Ducal Palazzo 1731-1765, Milano - Legature coeve in piena pergamena rigida con titolo oro su tassello in pelle al ds. Tagli azzurri. Esemplari splendidi e freschissimi.

        Hierosolyma, Jerusalem.

      - Aug. Vind. (Augsburg), Johann Christian Leopold, (1731). Finely engraved bird's eye-view of Jerusalem; banderole in the sky above the view with Latin and German title, flanked by 2 putti, one each on the left and right hand side, each holding a scroll with a key to various buildings in the view numbered 1-24 in German. Underneath a geographical and historical description of the Holy City in Latin and German, with Jerusalem's coat of arms in the centre. 20 x 29 cm.*A. Marsch, in: Augsburg, die Bilderfabrik Europas, 142, Jerusalem, No. 1. Rare first state (of 2), with N°.61 in lower left-hand corner and with the lower right corner blank. This first state was not found in any library consulted by Marsch, and she only found a copy in the trade. The database 'Ancient Maps of Jerusalem' of The Jewish National and University Library & The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (The Eran Laor Cartographic Collection) lists only the 2nd state with I2 in the lower right corner, which was printed after 1741. Marsch (134) explains that this first state was issued as a seperate and independent work; while the second state was issued in a bound book as part of over 200 other views and a title-page. This view depicts the city realistically, with 24 numbers above important buildings, and was probably inspired by Merian (1645). In the foreground are Turcs, Jews and Christians, some on horse-back or camel, some obviously pilgrims. The publisher Johann Christian Leopold lived from 1699 - 1755; the privilege for this view was granted in 1731. Seperately produced broadsheets, such as this, had a much lower chance of survival, and if they did survive, of being in good condition, since they did not have the protection of being between covers or surrounding sheets. - Well preserved, with ample margins.[(5729)]

[4] (of [10]), 158; 183 [i. e., 483], [2] pages, including half-title; lacks the 3 preliminary leaves following the title. Internally generally good, with clean, unmarked pages. FIRST EDITION of Fénelon's critique of Spinoza, also reprinting a French version of the biography of Spinoza by Johann Colerus, and a Latin refutation of Spinoza and Johannes Bredenburg by Isaac Orobio de Castro. Tchemerzine (1977) III, 232b; Linde 107. Provenance: Stamp of Alfonso Cassuto on title. Much of the work is devoted to an attempt to combat the perceived atheism of Spinoza?s philosophy. Paul Janet suggests that Bayle?s Dictionary was Fenelon and other French critics? principle source of information on Spinoza?s work, and that the loss of Spinoza?s subtleties in the reduction was the root of much of the criticism. Pemberton on flyleaf of Vol. 1. Contemporary full calfs, rebacked. PMM 189, Horblit 45b. - FIRST EDITION of Vol. 2 and SECOND EDITION of vol. 1. Hales applied his training in biology and mathematics (including physics) to make important scientific investigations presented in these separately published volumes. The first volume, Vegetable staticks, Hales describes his investigations of plant physiology, including the movement of water in plants and determining the three factors of water movement: root suction, root pressure and leaf suction. He also established that plants lose water continuously during transpiration through leaves. His quantitative measurements of these phenomena enabled him to show the rate of transpiration varied with temperature. Hales established that plants do not have true circulation system, and developed techniques of measuring the varying growth rates in different plant structures. The second volume, or Haemastaticks, 'contains the studies on blood pressure which make Hales one of the founders of modern experimental physiology. The application of the principle of the pressure-gauge or manometer enabled him to measure blood pressure during the contraction of the heart. He computed the circulation rate and estimated the velocity of the blood in the veins, arteries and capillary vessels and by showing that the capillary vessels are liable to constriction and dilation he made an important contribution both to the study of physiology and the practice of the physician of today . Hales' work marked the greatest advance in the physiology of the circulation between Harvey and the introduction of the mercury manometer and other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure by J.L.M. Poiseuille in 1828' (PMM). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The first edition was printed in 1723 by Joannes vander Linden of Leiden, who first intended to publish the work in a decent quarto but ended with a two-volume, rather thick and clumsy octavo (he even contemplated a three-volume set but gave up the idea). In 1729 he decided to sell the publishing rights to Isaak Tirion of Amsterdam, who in 1731 published this edition, the first (and last) to be printed in royal folio, measuring 41 x 28cm. Tirion could now reset the work in elegant and practical double-column format, add a large, magnificant frontispiece, and allow the handsome maps the freedom to remain unfolded double-page generous folios.       London: Printed and Sold by Tho: Bowles next ye Chapter House in St. Pauls Church-yard, John Bowles, at the Black Horse in Cornhill and by I. King at ye Globe in ye Poultrey [sic] near Stocks Market, [1731].. Copper-engraved map, with period outline color, on two joined sheets. Overall size of joined sheets: 41 1/4 x 24 3/4 inches. Good condition apart from expertly repaired tears to folds. Very good. A fine copy of state four (of five) of the famous Beaver map of the English and French colonies in North America. "One of the first and most important cartographic documents relating to the ongoing dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries separating their respective American colonies...The map was the primary exponent of the British position during the period immediately following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713" - DEGREES OF LATITUDE. The British colonies according to British claims are outlined in red, with the French very lightly outlined in blue. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River and eastern Great Lakes is shown as British. Numerous notations relating to territorial claims, Indian tribes, the fur trade, and the condition of the land cover the face of the map. This map shows the early 18th-century postal routes in the British colonies, and is frequently called the first American postal map. There are four insets, including a large map of coastal South Carolina, and a plan of Charleston. At lower left is a map of Florida and the Deep South, which is based on a map by Thomas Nairne, the Indian agent for South Carolina. The most striking feature is the large vignette which gives the map its popular name. It consists of an early view of Niagara Falls, with a colony of beavers at work in the foreground. Pritchard holds that the beaver "was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal's importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature." CUMMING, BRITISH MAPS, pp.6-12. CUMMING, SOUTHEAST IN EARLY MAPS 158. DEGREES OF LATITUDE 19 (state 4). Reinhartz, HERMAN MOLL GEOGRAPHER, pp.18-36. SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG, pp.138, 144. According to the Newest and most Exact Observations By Herman Moll Geographer. 2 sheets joined. Size: 1335 x 625 mm. Copperplate engraving, with original outline colour. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes. Excellent overall condition. Born in Germany, Herman Moll emigrated to London in 1680. His cartographic works enjoy a high reputation and are well known for their accuracy and their style. This map of the British dominions in North America is perhaps his most famous work, widely known by its nickname the "beaver map" after the beautiful large cartouche depicting an assembly line of Canadian beavers, seen working industriously and harmoniously cutting down trees, and subsequently damming a river in order to make their lodges, a richly symbolic message for the emerging North American nation. The beavers suggest that, by controlling their environment and by working as a team, wealth and its associated benefits can be achieved for all. It is also worth noting that beaver pelts, and the fur trade in general, were important early components in the economy of North America. The cartouche itself is derived from the earlier works of Hennepin (c. 1697) and de Fer (1713). Moll's map was hugely important from the historical standpoint of depicting and highlighting long running Anglo-French border disputes. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River, and territory east of the Great Lakes was deemed to be British. This tremendous map by Moll is one of the first large scale maps showing British developments in North America and, in addition, also shows for the first time American postal routes. There are four large and impressive insets highlighting British interests, and a delightful decorative map dedication to the Hon Walter Dowglass, captain general and chief governor of the Leeward Islands in America. The map also contains a wealth of comment and information concerning Native American tribes, colonial claims, settlements, and such like. This map is an important rendering of early British colonialism and as such is highly prized and sought after.
