Engelbrecht, M.
- [Nürnberg, the author, 1730-1740]. 4to (size 33.0 x 22.0 cm). 19th century pictorial boards in recent green cloth clamshell box.= Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) and his brother Christian were successful German illustrators and engravers from the Augsburg School at the beginning of the 18th century. Martin Engelbrecht was probably the first to create cards specially designed for miniature theaters, portable dioramas that became highly successful in the second half of the 18th and early part of the 19th centuries, before being replaced by the magic lantern, home film and video, the dvd, etc. Engelbrecht devoted entire series of these illustrations to the Italian theater. They were, however, also used in scrapbooks, as is done here. It is rare to see so many of his engravings combined. Some show people (some as caricatures, with larger heads), others are very accurate images of wild and domestic animals, garden objects, scenery, etc. Many are simply placed thematically together, but others are used to create whole page scenes. A few are not cut out, but occupy a whole frame (about 24 x 16 cm). The majority are hand-colouring, others are sepia-tinted. The album is signed on the title page: Sermensan Lainée 1797. Leaves uncut. 11 blank leaves present in the rear. Paper strong and clean. Printing and colouring bright and contemporary. A unique item. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ELISABETH CHRISTINA
1730 - seal paper has a few small defects at end of titles (easily supplied), a few other letters a little faint Elisabeth, daughter of Ludwig of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, followed her cousin Amalia in marrying a future Emperor. In 1708 she sailed from Genoa in a fleet of 142 vessels, under the British Admiral Leake, to marry Karl in Barcelona where for five years he had been pursuing his claim to the throne of Spain against Philip V. When Karl became Emperor in 1711 she stayed behind in Spain, not leaving till 1713 when the war of the Spanish Succession drew to an end. Her arms on the present seal still include the claim. In 1728 Fini concluded difficult negotiations between Benedict XIII and Karl VI in a manner highly favourable to the latter. In 1730 he was banned from the Vatican by the new Pope, after a review of his activities in the previous reign.

We offer an original copperplate engraving by Bernard Picart. Printed with two plates: the illustration image is 9 ¾” x 8” and the border plate is 13 ⅞” x 10”, on handmade laid paper with full margins intact (17 ⅞” x 12”). The engraving is titled “Arion preserved by a Dolphin” in French, English, German and Dutch under the image and the border is lettered with production detail: 'B. Picart del.'at the lower left. From Picart’s classic portfolio of prints, “The Temple of the Muses”, published in Amsterdam in 1730-1733. This finely engraved image features Arion, mounted on a dolphin, playing the harp with sea nymphs gazing lovingly up at him. Framed with an ornate border with a lion's head at the top. Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French engraver and illustrator most known for book-illustrations, including the Bible and Ovid. His most famous work is: Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde with his illustrations exploring other religions with an uncommon eye for accuracy and detail. More recently, the book has been examined as an early example of religious tolerance in 18th century Europe. Picart lived and worked in Amsterdam and was a converted Huguenot. Condition: The margins are slightly discolored from prior framing and a few faint dampstains. There is a small ½” tear at the binding margin on the right, well away from the image, overall good presentable condition.

Old vellum, title stamped on spine. Minor offsetting from plates, but fine otherwise. Embossed stamp of the British and Foreign Bible Society on front endpaper. First Edition of the first book on the Chinese language published in Europe. Bayer, a classical scholar, was professor of Greek and Roman antiquities at St. Petersburg?s Academy of Sciences between 1726 and 1737. At the age of nineteen he was ?overwhelmed with a desire to learn Chinese? and spent the next seventeen years studying and collecting everything he could find relating to the language with the intent of ?[making] up some kind of dictionary and some introduction to the rules of the Chinese language and to Chinese literature? (quoted in Spence, Chinese Roundabout: Essays in History and Culture, p. 3). This was an extremely difficult task, as the Jesuits, who were the first Europeans to gain a foothold in China, had a quasi-monopoly on Sino-European relations and thus had a proprietary interest in keeping information about the Chinese language to themselves. ?In the course of time, however, a few Jesuits visiting Europe came to give away some bits of the secret, and two or t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[VALLEMONT, Pierre Le Lorrain de?].
Borba de Moraes I, p. 430 ("excellent book on the subject'"); JCB 453; Sabin 36685 note; cf. STCN (1 copy of the other Amsterdam 1730 issue). Reissue with a new title-page of the 1723 "Amsterdam" edition (perhaps also the same as the first edition printed in Rouen in 1723) of an interesting anonymous report of a slaving voyage, written by a Frenchman who sailed from France to Africa and Buenos Aires aboard a slave ship belonging to the ''Asiento" Company, which was entitled to transport slaves to South America by treaty with Spain. It is sometimes attributed to the French theologian and physician Pierre Le Lorrain de Vallemont (1649-1721). It gives a detailed account of the slaves, describing the way they looked and dressed, and gives an elaborate report on the slave trade in Africa, Brazil (the author visited Rio de Janeiro and Bahia) and Buenos Aires. The whole voyage is described very minutely, the author reporting his observations every day.The ship left on 14 July 1702, and arrived on 5 September in Africa, where they stayed for 5 days, before sailing further to Loango, where the slaves were traded. On 20 August, they arrived at Buenos Aires. On 30 October 1705, the author started his voyage back to France, where he arrived in March 1706. With contemporary manuscript inscription. In good condition. The chemicals used by the binding finisher have slightly damaged the surface of the leather, but the binding remains structurally good. A fascinating account of the voyage of a slave ship and the slaves in it.

RITTMEYER, Johann (1636-1698)
Lüneburg: Cornelius Johann Stern, 1730. Long 12mo (150 x 67 mm). [24], 621, [3] pp. Engraved frontispiece, additional engraved title, letterpress title in red and black, 10 engraved emblematic plates, the engravings by Johann-Benjamin Brühl. Bericht an die Buchbinder, listing the plates, at end. Contemporary German "sharkskin" (rayfish) binding, covers with mounted silver frames with repoussé decoration of leafy and geometrical strapwork, shells, and eight small heads, two fore-edge clasps with repoussé decor including a putto playing a flute, inner clasps with mark SMR and date 1734, gilt edges, Dutch-gilt floral pastedown endpapers.*** A luxury copy of a popular devotional manual and hymnal. First printed in 1685, Rittmeyer's "Heavenly Repast of Joy" enjoyed lasting success. The author (identified in this edition at the end of the foreword) was a preacher from Helmstadt. All editions were illustrated, using the heart motif whose origins lie in the 16th-century religious emblems of Antoine Wierix's Cor Iesu Amanti Sacrum. This edition appears to be the first illustrated by the Leipzig engraver Johann-Benjamin Brühl (1691-1763) (the previous edition from this press, published in 1628, had engravings by A. Reinhard). The engraved title shows Jesus dining with the apostles, surrounded by humble onlookers. The frontispiece is a Crucifixion, with mourners below including Old Testament personnages (Adam and David), each identified by an engraved caption. The engravings show the heart as a symbol of the soul, and its progress under the influence of the infant Jesus, whose exact … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pergament der Zeit mit 2 Schließen und handschriftlichem Rückentitel, gering fleckig. - Schottenloher 9238; Jantz 2661; Seebaß I, 1094. - Erste Ausgabe. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FÖLSCH, Michael.
Unique harness maker's colour-drawn sample book, with each drawing depicting a horse in elaborate carriage horse tack. The drawings were executed by Michael Fölsch himself, one of the foremost Viennese makers and sellers of luxury tack in the early 19th century, to show prospective clients possible designs for their carriage horses. Each drawing is signed by Fölsch as artist. His talent for draughtsmanship and colouring was hitherto unknown and is remarkable for a leather craftsman who probably never received training as a painter. The variety and complexity of the designs, and the use of gold and silver, is impressive, suggesting that such bespoke equipment was intended for the wealthy elite. From the equestrian library of the Imperial stable master Franz Wenzel Schleichart von Wiesenthal (ca. 1730?-post 1800), with his engraved armorial bookplate upside down on the back of the box. He was a leading figure in a great dynasty of stable masters and horse breakers. Thereafter in the collection of Franz Josef II, Fürst von und zu Liechtenstein (1906-1989).With only stubs for 5 of what would have been 72 leaves. A few leaves had torn or nearly torn before they were mounted ca. 1805, but most are in very good condition and the mounting has preserved and protected those that had been damaged. The drawings were clearly made for daily use and show occasional dirt, small stains, spots or other minor blemishes.
