Seutter, dopo un apprendistato presso Homann a Norimberga, trasferitosi ad Augsburg verso il 1720, aprì la propria attività superando il maestro sotto il profilo della bellezza: le sue carte hanno sempre colori brillanti e cartigli elaborati. Buon esemplare con lievi tracce di umido e restauro all'angolo sup. sin.Copperplate, original colour, mm 500x580. Enriched by a large cartouche in bottom right corner. Good condition with a restored marginal area in upper left corner, some surface dirt and light water stains. From Seutter's Atlas Maior printed in about 1730. Seutter, one of the most celebrated eighteenth century German mapmakers, after having worked with Homann in Nuremberg, started his own business in Augsburg around 1710. His maps always have elaborate cartouches and are very decorative and printed on good paper.

Reliure de l'époque en plein veau havane, dos à cinq nerfs orné de caissons à fleurons et fers dorés, pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin rouge, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches rouges. XXXII-606 pp., 26 p. ; 10 p. ; 560 pp. ; 22 p. Ouvrage célèbre et incontournable sur la conquête du Mexique, dont l'édition originale espagnole parut à Madrid en 1684 et qui fut réédité une cinquantaine de fois jusqu'en 1850. La première traduction française date de 1691, il s'agit ici de la cinquième édition. Exemplaire bien complet de 12 planches gravées (9 dans le premier volume, 3 dans le second), dont 2 dépliantes, et de 2 cartes : carte du Mexique, golfe du Mexique, environs du lac du Mexique, vue du Rio de Canoas, l'Ile de Cuba au port St Jacques, vaisseaux de Cortez sur une plage, bataille dans la vallée d'Otumba, vue de Mexico, etc. Don Antonia de Solis (1610-1686) devint chroniqueur des Indes après Herrera y Tordesillas. Quant à Fernand Cortez (1485-1547), il est l'un des plus fameux « conquistadores » qui, au 16ème siècle, instaurèrent la domination espagnole en Amérique au prix de terribles massacres. En 1504, il s'embarque pour Saint-Domingue, puis en 1511 il suit Vélasquez de Léon à Cuba, où il est chargé de préparer l'expédition vers le Mexique. Il quitte Cuba en 1519 et s'empare de Mexico en 1521 après un siège de soixante-quinze jours.
