[Bolingbroke, Hervey et al]
London: R. Franklin, et al., 1730. 32, 31, [blank], 30, [ad, blank], 62 pp. 8vo. A clean and bright copy in twentieth century paneled calf, green and red morocco labels to spine, slightly shelf-worn, some ink annotations throughout mostly concerning the authorship of each work. 32, 31, [blank], 30, [ad, blank], 62 pp. 8vo. THE WAR BETWEEN BOLINGBROKE AND WALPOLE. A sammelband of four pamphlets concerning Viscount Bolingbroke's efforts to undermine the Walpole administration. Having recently returned from exile and though allowed to purchase property, Walpole denied Bolingbroke from restoration of his political rights, wary that he would abuse them. He proved correct and soon Bolingbroke undertook a campaign to resume power. A paper war commenced, and Bolingbroke's organ of choice was The Craftsman, "a journalistic venture which heralded the birth of a formidable opposition to Walpole and the beginnings of a propaganda campaign of sustained brilliance and of rare political sophistication. Edited by Nicholas Amhurst and printed by Richard Francklin, The Craftsman attracted contributions from Bolingbroke, Pulteney, and other leading thinkers and writers in the opposition camp ... During its period of greatest influence, from 1729 to 1732, at least 8000 copies of each issue were distributed and probably upwards of 12,000 copies in 1731 ... The Craftsman aroused such public interest and so embarrassed the ministry that Walpole spent large sums subsidizing a pro-ministerial press to reply to it (and to attack Bolingbroke and Pulteney in particular); and he had Francklin arrest … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOULAINVILLIERS, comte Henri de;
[Click Below for Full Description]

VALLEMONT, Pierre Le Lorrain de?].
Borba de Moraes I, p. 430 ("excellent book on the subject'"); JCB 453; Sabin 36685 note; cf. STCN (1 copy of the other Amsterdam 1730 issue). Reissue with a new title-page of the 1723 "Amsterdam" edition (perhaps also the same as the first edition printed in Rouen in 1723) of an interesting anonymous report of a slaving voyage, written by a Frenchman who sailed from France to Africa and Buenos Aires aboard a slave ship belonging to the ''Asiento" Company, which was entitled to transport slaves to South America by treaty with Spain. It is sometimes attributed to the French theologian and physician Pierre Le Lorrain de Vallemont (1649-1721). It gives a detailed account of the slaves, describing the way they looked and dressed, and gives an elaborate report on the slave trade in Africa, Brazil (the author visited Rio de Janeiro and Bahia) and Buenos Aires. The whole voyage is described very minutely, the author reporting his observations every day.The ship left on 14 July 1702, and arrived on 5 September in Africa, where they stayed for 5 days, before sailing further to Loango, where the slaves were traded. On 20 August, they arrived at Buenos Aires. On 30 October 1705, the author started his voyage back to France, where he arrived in March 1706. With contemporary manuscript inscription. In good condition. The chemicals used by the binding finisher have slightly damaged the surface of the leather, but the binding remains structurally good. A fascinating account of the voyage of a slave ship and the slaves in it. [Attributes: First Edition]

SOLIS, Antoine de;
Sabin, A Dictionnary of Books Relating to America, II, 572.

SEUTTER MATTHEUS.
1730 ca.. Copperplate, original colour, mm 495x570. Very good example in fine colour. Some stains recognizable on the back. Seutter, after having worked with Homann in Nuremberg, opened his own activity in Augsburg around 1720. His maps always have elaborate cartouches and are very decorative and printed on good paper.
