First edition of Fielding's third play, a comic ballad opera in the mold of Gay's Beggar's Opera; it ran for 41 nights in its first season and was subsequently revived. "In March 1730 at the Little Haymarket Theatre he had his first popular success with The Author's Farce; its third act, entitled 'The Pleasures of the Town', was played by actors who impersonated puppets representing well-known personalities of the day" (ODNB). ESTC notes two variant woodcut headpiece on B1, with either a head or, as in the present copy, an enthroned Cupid. A scarce title; ABPC records only one copy at auction in the past 35 years. Cross III, p. 290-1; ESTC N15803. Provenance: Bernard Quaritch (pencil note on rear pastedown); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate). Period paneled calf. Some pale browning and spotting at margins, small closed tear to top margin of title and chip to following leaf.

First edition of Desfontaines's imitation of Gulliver's Travels, preceding the Amsterdam edition of the same year. Pierre Desfontaines's unauthorised sequel followed on the success of his translation of Gulliver's Travels (published in 1727, the first Paris edition of Swift's work). The Nouveau Gulliver's title pages' spuriously claim that it was "traduit d'un manuscrit anglois". However, the preface states that Le Nouveau Gulliver is not a continuation of Swift's Gulliver, "ce n'est ni le même Voïageur, ni le même genre d'avantures, ni le même goût d'allegorie. The map notes fortified cities, villages, roads, bridges, forests, castles and topography. The elaborate title cartouche in the upper right quadrant features two bearded mean bearing clubs, an assortment of pastoral animals and the Danish royal crest. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'. Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. Homann was a self-taught engraver from Swabia, Germany, who worked for Funck, von Sandrat et al before he started his own business in 1702, publishing and compiling his own atlases. DEN HAAG VANAF HET MALIEVELD?Gesigt van het Nieuwe Voor-hout, uyt het bosch tot ?s Gravenhage?. Gravure met ets gedrukt van twee koperen platen, ca. 1730 los uitgegeven door Leonhard Schenk. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 64 x 103 cm.In het bos, net buiten de stad, is het een drukte van belang. Het gaat om zien en gezien worden. Links de Koekamp, rechts voor de brug de wachtpost. De Bosbrug voert ons vanaf het Malieveld in de richting van het Korte Voorhout. Over de brug de (naar Amalia van Solms vernoemde) Prinsessegracht. Op de hoek van de Prinsessegracht en de Korte Voorhout twee statige panden. Het linker ?Huis aan de Boschkant? werd in de eerste helft van de 18de-eeuw bewoond door de raadspensionaris van Holland, Simon van Slingelandt, en door Rudolph Ulrich Freiherr von Spr?cken, gezant van de Engelse koning in diens hoedanigheid van keurvorst van Hannover. Het pand werd bij een bombardement verwoest in 1945, nu staat er het Ministerie van Financi?n. Het rechter hoekhuis werd in eerste helft van de 18de-eeuw bewoond door Charles de Montmoulin, kolonel bij de Zwitserse Gardes, zijn weduwe Ida Valckenier en vervolgens Johanna van Breugel Vrijvrouwe van Heenvliet en haar erven. Het werd afgebroken in 1914. Rechts er naast ligt de Geschutgieterij, waar de er langs lopende Kanonstraat ons tegenwoordig nog aan herinnert.Op de achtergrond zien we de Grote Kerk en langs de skyline de toppen van onder andere de Nieuwe Kerk, Binnenhof, en Kloosterkerk.Prijs: ? 6.450,- (incl. lijst).

After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs.
