CRUQUIUS, Nicolaas.
V.d. Brink, Hollandse rivierkartog. 8; Koeman, Handleiding, p. 103, no. 123. Engraved map commissioned by the Provincial Council of Holland, of the river Merwede by Nicolaas Cruquius, showing the area between Sliedrecht/Hardinxveld to Gorinchem, including parts of the Biesbosch, accompanied by an overview map showing the river though a larger area from Dordrecht to Gorinchem. This map, the most influential river map of its time, demonstrates the high quality of Dutch institutional cartography in the 18th century. It set a standard for Dutch river mapping and, closely related, determined the parameters of the topographical research that should always accompany it. The main purpose of the map was to help find a solution to the frequent flooding in a vast low-lying area along the south river bank called the Biesbosch, problems that had plagued the region chronically since a 15th-century dike breach that was never fully rectified. A fine of an unsurpassed river map and a landmark of Dutch cartography.

He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Afric … [Click Below for Full Description]
