Coffee]: [Compagnie des Indes]
Paris, 1730. 8pp. Quarto. Very minor foxing. Light soiling along spine edge on last page; small separation along bottom of spine. Contemporary inscription. Very good. A French royal decree exempting coffee from being taxed. "By this decree coffee, of which the Compagnie des Indes enjoys the monopoly, is exempt from Customs and duties" - Maggs. "The Compagnie des Indes flourished from 1726 to 1746, paying handsome dividends, and bringing wealth to the ports of Bordeaux, Nantes, Marseille, and, in particular, its home port of Lorient (L'Orient), although it lost its rights in the western hemisphere. It established trading offices in many parts of India, also Canton, Yemen, Persia, Basra and North Africa. The main sources of its wealth were porcelain, wallpapers, lacquer and tea from China, cotton and silk cloth from China and India, coffee from Mocha (Yemen), pepper from Mah (South India), gold, ivory and slaves from West Africa" - Shakespeare. Wroth locates only one copy, in the John Crerar Library; OCLC identifies only one more, at the University of Minnesota. Rare. From the library of Cardinal Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-1794), Minister of Louis XVI, Archibishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Acadmie Franaise, Brienne wielded significant power as as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). MAGGS, FRENCH COLONISATION OF AMERICA 323 (this copy). BURNET, Gilbert
Dublin: R. Gunne et al, 1730-1733. Vol. II states it is the Third edition, corrected. Leather bound. Good. 3 vols.: [xiv], 382 [285], 282, [3]; [4], xv, 21, 320, [3]; [4], viii, xvi, 238, x, 328, viii p. not including plates. 32 cm. 23 b&w plates (8 + 12 + 3). Full leather with worn boards. Chipped spine label vol. I. Ring mark on front of vol. II. Ink stamps front free endpapers and title pages. Ink signatures and inscriptions on front free endpaper of vol. I as well as another front endpaper and vol. III's title page. Occasional thumbing. Some red underlining or marks in Preface of vol. I. In the mid-1670s, a French translation appeared of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres (1585). Sanders attacked the English Reformation which he considered the political act of a corrupt king. Several of Gilbert Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work so in 1679 the first volume of this work was published, covering the reign of Henry VIII. Vol. II, appearing in 1681, covers the reign of Elizabeth. Vol. III consists of corrections and additional material. Parliament voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume and, in 1680, Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of doctor of divinity. Burnet's literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication which remained the standard reference work in the field for over a century. Catholics, not surprisingly, dispute some of its content.

Fer, Nicolas de.
1730. 159 x 108 cm (conjoined sheets), in hand colour. Scale ca. 1:12,000,000. A magnificent coloured wall map, enclosed within historiated borders showing topographical vignettes, printed on four conjoined sheets with additional running title above and engraved text providing geographical and political information to the sides, all on additional sheets. While it is a map of Africa, it also shows the Arabian Peninsula in its entirety. - The cartographer Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720), son of a Parisian engraver specialising in the colouring and selling of maps, maintained a good relationship with the Academy of Sciences and was Geographer Royal to the Dauphin and the King of Spain. Nevertheless, his productions were not aimed at a university-educated audience, and his work is distinguished by easy accessibility and popularisation of geographical information rather than by scholarly precision. The present rendering of Arabia, apparently based in part on the work of Delisle, shows this posthumous publication (by de Fer's son-in-law Danet) to be a later release of a much early conception of the Middle East, outdated even in the 1740s. In particular, it omits the Sinai Peninsula included in several of de Fer's earlier efforts. "Like Delisle, De Fer had considerable prestige and influence in France and all over Europe" (Historical Atlas of the Gulf, p. 278). Among the toponyms along the coast of the Arabian Gulf are Abadan, Sur, Ahsa, Janama, Bahr, El Catif, Bischa, Borou, Godo, Vodana, Calba, Dadana, and Pinder. - Professionally repaired; some wrinkling, but preserving its impressi … [Click Below for Full Description]
