[Click Below for Full Description]

Most of the work is concerned with the Turco-Venetian campaign in the Morea 1716 -1717.Unique édition, très peu commune, de ce texte attribué au polygraphe Anthelme Tricaud (1671-1739) par Barbier. Navari, Collection Contominas, 748.

De L’Imprimerie Royale, Paris, 1730. 8 pages. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 8”) folded pamphlet housed in a custom made enclosure. First edition. A French royal decree which provides for the state monopoly for the sale of tobacco, of importance for New World and especially French colonial trade. From the library of Cardinal Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne (1727-94), Minister of Louis XVI, Archbishop of Toulouse and of Sens. A friend of Voltaire and a member of the Académie Française, Brienne wielded significant power as as head of the Finance Ministry, which earned him many enemies. He died in prison during the French Revolution, despite having renounced Catholicism in 1793 (presumably as an attempt to save his life). Condition: Ink notation on title page, very small staining through all pages. Wroth lists one copy, at Harvard; OCLC adds just one more, at the John Carter Brown Library. A very good copy of a rare item. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Madame de Pompadour, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour. (Binding)
Jansons à Waesberge, 1730. In-12º. 563 + (11)pp. Printer's device on title page. Some light yellowish, but in very good condition overall. Bound in full contemporary calf, three gold lines round sides and in centre of each side the arms of Madame de Pompadour. Gilt in compartments on spine. Madame de Pompadour, was a member of the French court and was the official chief mistress of Louis XV from 1745 to 1751, and remained influential as court favourite until her death. She took charge of the king’s schedule and was a valued aide and advisor, despite her frail health and many political enemies. She secured titles of nobility for herself and her relatives, and built a network of clients and supporters. She was particularly careful not to alienate the Queen, Marie Leszczyńska. On February 8, 1756, the Marquise de Pompadour was named as the thirteenth lady in waiting to the queen, a position considered the most prestigious at the court, which accorded her with honors. Pompadour was a major patroness of architecture and decorative arts, especially porcelain. She was a patroness of the philosophes of the Enlightenment, including Voltaire. Hostile critics at the time generally tarred her as a malevolent political influence, but historians are more favorable, emphasizing her successes as a patroness of the arts and a champion of French pride. Art historian Melissa Hyde argues that the critiques of Pompadour were driven by fears over the overturning of social and gender hierarchies that Pompadour's power and influence, as a woman who was not born into the aristocracy, represent … [Click Below for Full Description]

VESLING, Johann
typis Paolo Frambotto, 1730. 4to. pp. (xvi) 274 (xiv). Roman letter, with Italic. Attractive engraved t-p illustrating lesson in the anatomical theatre of the University of Padua, flanked by two allegorical female figures; printer's device to second t-p; 23 fine engravings of dissected bodies, blood vessels and organs; decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Marginal ink spotting in a few places. Illustrations in very good impression, gutter of second reinforced. A very good copy in contemporary vellum. Ex-libris of 'J[ohannes?] Fabris(?) Rect. de (?) 1730'. A very good copy of the FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of this popular anatomy text for medical students. Johann Vesling (1598-1649) was a German scholar of botany and medicine, who became professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Padua in 1632. 'Syntagma anatomicum' was an extremely successful textbook favouring practical knowledge 'which dissection offers to eyes and hands' over mere theoretical questions. Vesling guides the reader through a textual cum visual dissection head to foot, proceeding according to the body parts an anatomist would encounter from the moment of the first incision, beginning with skin and body fat. As he proceeds, he examines bones underlying the soft parts which are being dissected and the complexities of the nervous system, the vessels that take blood to the brain ('circle of Willis') and the lymphatic system--these being among the earliest and most thorough medical descriptions of these anatomical structures. ~The copperplate illustrations were 'intended for the commonest needs but … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAIRASSE, Denis
In Venezia, presso Sebastiano Coleti, 1730. In 8vo (cm. 15,8); legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida; pp. 376. Axs

FURBER, Robert.
London -32, 1730. Twelve hand-coloured plates designed by Pieter Casteels and engraved by H. Fletcher, plus the Floral Calendar (13). Framed and glazed, overall size: 68cm by 55cm. Rare complete set of what was essentially a ground-breaking and highly decorative flowers catalogue: an incomparable record of the most sort-after types and varieties of flower that could be grown in temperate regions during the early eighteenth century. Here with fine hand-colouring. In the early eighteenth century, the most important trade association for the purchase, sale, and exchange of plants and seeds was the Society of Gardeners. Its members would bring specimens to monthly meetings at a coffee-house in Chelsea for discussion and to standardise plant names. For reference purposes a selection of the plants might be drawn. This, combined with the wishes of clients to have notes on cultivation, led to the evolution of illustrated catalogues, often handsomely produced. Of all the publications produced by members of the Society of Gardeners, that of Robert Furber (circa 1674-1756) displayed the most originality. His nursery, in Kensington Road near Hyde Park, was extremely successful, and having already published a couple of modest lists, he produced the present, extravagant catalogue illustrated in the grand manner. Rather than producing a conventional brochure, Furber engaged the Flemish artist, Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), resident in London and well-known for his still-life compositions, to execute 12 portrayals of flowers bunched in ornamental vases and urns, one for each month of the ye … [Click Below for Full Description]
