FURBER, Robert.
London -32, 1730. Twelve hand-coloured plates designed by Pieter Casteels and engraved by H. Fletcher, plus the Floral Calendar (13). Framed and glazed, overall size: 68cm by 55cm. Rare complete set of what was essentially a ground-breaking and highly decorative flowers catalogue: an incomparable record of the most sort-after types and varieties of flower that could be grown in temperate regions during the early eighteenth century. Here with fine hand-colouring. In the early eighteenth century, the most important trade association for the purchase, sale, and exchange of plants and seeds was the Society of Gardeners. Its members would bring specimens to monthly meetings at a coffee-house in Chelsea for discussion and to standardise plant names. For reference purposes a selection of the plants might be drawn. This, combined with the wishes of clients to have notes on cultivation, led to the evolution of illustrated catalogues, often handsomely produced. Of all the publications produced by members of the Society of Gardeners, that of Robert Furber (circa 1674-1756) displayed the most originality. His nursery, in Kensington Road near Hyde Park, was extremely successful, and having already published a couple of modest lists, he produced the present, extravagant catalogue illustrated in the grand manner. Rather than producing a conventional brochure, Furber engaged the Flemish artist, Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), resident in London and well-known for his still-life compositions, to execute 12 portrayals of flowers bunched in ornamental vases and urns, one for each month of the ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

His concern with the broader implications of Stahl's work, transcending other, more narrow approaches that focused on phlogiston, prefigured the orientation of important groups of chemists in Germany and France at mid-century" â€" DSB. Frontispice. 20pp. 3). 36pp. 1 planche dépliante hors-texte. 4). 32pp. 5). 23pp. 6). 14pp. 7). 23pp. Plein veau, dos lisse orné (reliure de l'époque restaurée). 1). Edition Originale de cette féroce satire contre les encyclopédistes à l'origine d'une violente polémique entre les philosophes et leurs détracteurs. Palissot de Montenoy (1730-1834) avait déjà en 1755 réalisé une première attaque lors de la publication de sa comédie intitulée "Le Cercle" dans laquelle il s'en prenait à Rousseau, mais le scandale n'éclata qu'à la parution du présent ouvrage. Exaspérés par le succès de la pièce, les philosophes contre-attaquèrent par la publication de multiples pamphlets. "Cette pièce, pétillante d'esprit et de malignité, et où l'on trouve des scènes excellentes et quelques caractères piquants de vérité et que tout Paris reconnut, obtint un succès prodigieux, quoiqu'au fond elle manque d'invention et d'intérêt, et que le plan en soit trop servilement calqué sur celui des 'Femmes savantes'. Tout le parti philosophique se déchaina contre Palissot. Il parut une foule de pamphlets virulents, dans lesquels il est tout naturel de penser que la mesure fut souvent dépassée, à l'exemple de celui qui le premier avait soulevé cette guerre" (Quérard). Vignette gravée sur cuivre à la page de titre. 2). Edition Originale de cette riposte de l'abbé Morellet (1727-1819) à la comédie de Palissot. BOULAINVILLIERS, comte Henri de;
[Click Below for Full Description]

NEWTON, ISAAC
London: Printed for W. Innys, 1730. Fourth Edition, Corrected. The last edition of Newton's groundbreaking work to be revised by the author before his death, this version contains the complete set of 31 "Queries" exploring the nature of light and color. First published in 1704 with 16 queries, "Opticks" grew out of experiments begun while Newton was riding out the plague years 1665-66 in Lincolnshire, as well as from findings described in his early lecture series at Cambridge. It caused a sensation in England and on the Continent. PMM notes, "The core of his work was the observation that the spectrum of colours (formed when a ray of light shines through a glass prism) is stretched along its axis, together with his experimental proof that rays of different colours are refracted to different extents. This causes the stretching, or dispersion, of the spectrum. All previous philosophers and mathematicians had been sure that white light is pure and simple, regarding colours as modifications or qualifications of the white. Newton showed experimentally that the opposite is true.". 208 x 126 mm. (8 1/8 x 5"). 4 p.l., 382 pp., [1] leaf (ads). Fourth Edition, Corrected.
