Francesco Aquila
1730. Acquaforte, in alto ORDINE DELLA CAVALCATA PRESO IN S. GIO LATERANO DAL SOM.mo PON CLMENTI XII/ alli 19 9mbre 1730. Opera molto rara. Etching, 1730, inscribed in the banner ORDINE DELLA CAVALCATA PRESO IN S. G … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hogarth, William
London: 18th Century impressions. Copperplate engravings on laid paper. 19.5 x 16 inches. sheet sizes. With small margins and marginal defects. These appear to be 18th Century impressions on thick laid paper. Paulson. nos. 146-149. As a series, The Four Times of Day relates to A Harlot's Progress and A Rake's Progress. However, what unites each scene to the other are not the individual characters, none of whom are repeated, but the passage of time itself. Hogarth seems to accentuate the notion of the 'progress of the day', as well as that of an urban tour, by showing prominent figures walking across the compositions. Morning The setting is the west side of Covent Garden piazza on a winter's morning. On the right vegetable and fruit-sellers and market-stall holders are preparing for the day, while a fight has broken out in Tom King's coffee house on the left with someone's wig flying out of the door. Two aristocratic rakes are fondling and kissing young market girls. They are observed by a well-dressed woman, who pauses on her way to church. Her shivering footboy, his nose bright red from the cold, follows her holding a prayer book. Noon The spire of St Giles-in-the-Fields, seen in the background, indicates that Noon is set in Soho, an area associated with London's Huguenot community (French Protestants). On the left a soberly dressed congregation spills out onto the street. In front of them are a lavishly dressed couple, their posturing probably meant to indicate that they are French. On the right, a servant girl is being fondled by a black footman. With her attention under … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUGEANT
[Click Below for Full Description]

DOPPELMAYR, Johann Gabriel
J. B. Homann, Nürnberg, 1730. Engraved double-hemisphere of the lunar surface, hand-colored, image 494 x 588 mm (single sheet 520 x 593). Map is laid down and framed under glass. ---- Important double-hemisphere map of the surface of the moon, depicting the lunar maps of Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687) and Giovanni Riccioli (1598-1671). Hevelius published "the first atlas of the moon, Selenographia, 1647. It displayed for the first time the complexity of the moon's topography, although it perpetuated certain myths such as the existence of lunar seas. Few of the place-names proposed by Hevelius became permanent, indeed one of the most striking aspects of his maps is the elaborate analogy he built up between the topography of the moon and that of the earth, with the Mediterranean, North Africa and Asia Minor dominating the moon's visible face. It is to the Jesuit astronomer, Giambattista Riccioli, an ardent opponent of Copernicanism, that we owe most of the familiar lunar names" (Whitfield, Mapping of the Heavens, p. 93 and p. 97). The double hemisphere is surrounded by representations of four phases of the moon, the upper corners decorated with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon, text panels at bottom.

Moll, Herman.
London, Herman Moll, John Bowles, Thomas Bowles & John King, ca. 1730. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 610 x 1010 mm. Restoration to binding folds and tears. Moll's large-format map of the Turkish Empire based on De l'Isle, also covering the whole of the Mediterranean, first published in 1714. The caravan route from Basra to Mecca is also given. A note engraved in the area of the Arabian desert south of today's United Arab Emirates contains a pointed editorial critique of Ottoman rule in Arabia: "The Turks oppress the Arabians with Tribute, and Govern 'em with great Cruelty, which has made them several times attempt to throw off their Yoke, but in Vain: Those of Arabia Felix are kept in Awe by the Turkish Gallies on the Red Sea; and those of the other Arabia's not being able to subsist in their barren Countries have spread themselves into the mountanous parts of Syria and the Desarts of Barbary, Barca &c. where they live by Rapine in the Neighboring Countries, and plundering Travellers." - Well preserved; an excellent, appealingly coloured specimen. « Cantahar is above all a programmatic utopia which presents a major plan of the reform of the French society as ficttitiously accomplished, the narrative element is nonetheless present and the narrator enough cha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hogarth, William
1730. London: 18th Century impressions. Copperplate engravings on laid paper. 19.5 x 16 inches. sheet sizes. With small margins and marginal defects. These appear to be 18th Century impressions on thick laid paper. Paulson., nos. With her at … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAMILTON, Anthony, Count.
Paris: Jean Fr[ançois] Josse, 1730. 12mo (161 × 90 mm.), pp. [iv], 275, [1]. Woodcut ornaments. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt panelled spine, red edges. Later ownership inscription. A very good copy. First edition of the best of Irish emigré Hamilton's marvellous parodies of exotic fantasies and fairy-tales. Histoire de Fleur d'Epine ('the story of Mayblossom') purports to be the tale of the 1001st night, told by Dinarzade 'because she cannot bear to hear another of her sister Scheherazade's interminable tedious yarns' (Warner). The tale draws playfully on the motifs of fairy-tales and is full of all the bizarre transformations and magical occurrences that readers of the contes de fées of Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy might expect. All is delivered in a charming if almost entirely nonsensical narrative. Hamilton was an Irish catholic exile in France, who composed his fantasies for the amusement of his friends at the court of James II in exile. He was a remarkable figure who moved with ease between the anglophone and francophone worlds, composing literature in French in a style few Frenchmen could match. Cioranescu 33453. The work has been extensively studied by Marina Warner (see Fantastic Metamorphoses, Other Worlds, 2004 and lectures).

Original b/w plate from Kitab-i Cihannuma which is one of the most important Turkish incunabula. Oblong large 4to. (32 x 39 cm). In Ottoman script. It shows climate zones of the world. Parallels and equatorial line which are divided into climate zones on world sphere and it includes a table on climates and degrees. At the right-upper side, written 'Imâl eden: Ahmed Er-Kirimî' [i.e. Prep. by Ahmed Al-Qirimî]. The story of Cihannuma can be considered as an effort to keep up with the speed that knowledge spread around the world at a time when literacy was highly limited. Kâtip Çelebi began to rewrite Cihannuma in 1654. During the next six years, he added to his books the knowledge he gained from the books he read. Kâtip Çelebi was vastly influenced by nonreligious positive knowledge, especially by the Atlas and later the Atlas Minor of Gerardus Mercator. He had the book translated from Latin to Turkish by a French recruit andenriched his own book with the new information. He brought together in Cihannuma the knowledge of geography and astronomy existing in Western sources (1654). Cihannüma has 13 charts and 27 maps. Mercator's maps are distinguished by their distinct properties. However, there are such maps which depict Istanbul, Anatolia, the Caucasus and the Orient that have to have been borrowed from other sources and there are those with relatively less detail that might have been prepared by Muslim geographers. MEAM LOEZ.-
Presso Ottolengmie Comp. Con Aprovassione,, Livorno, 1730. Folio. 353pp. Portada con cornisa xilográfica. Cartoné de época. Enciclopedia Judaica Castellana. Meg, 17) o no hebreo. [Attributes: Hard … [Click Below for Full Description]
