LAAN, Adolf van der and Sieuwert van der MEULEN.
[33] ll.Rare first edition of two classic print series, published together in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk under the engraved general title Groote vissery. The first series of 16 plates presents the herring fishery and trade, such as the weaving of herring nets, the preparing of boats for herring fishing, the boats themselves, but also a herring feast and the selling of the herrings. In contrast to the second series, these first series are not signed by Adolf van der Laan, but he may have engraved these 16 prints after drawings by Sieuwert van der Meulen, as he did for the second series. The second series show different stages of whale fishery, such as the search for a whale, the attempt to catch it, butchering the caught wale, but also other things the whalers did during their voyage, such as hunting walruses, polar bears and roe deer. This second series also show the severe circumstances that the whalers (or the so-called Greenlanders ) had to endure: ships got lost in the ice or were cast away in a storm. Every engraved plate in the first and second series has its own caption, for the first series only in Dutch and English, but for the second series also in German. All together this book is a rare but beautiful pictorial documentation of the two great pillars of Dutch fishery, herring fishery and whaling.Binding slightly rubbed, corners bumped, but with all the engraved plates in very good condition. A rare, beautiful and historically accurate pictorial record of whaling and herring fishery.l Atlas van Stolk III, 3019; Cat. NHSM, p. 900; E. [Mayan society and land ownership in Yucatán]
1730-1819. Campeche [Mexico]. Folio, (320 x 250 mm). Manuscript on stamped paper dated 1810-1819 throughout, ff. 165, with 4 manuscript maps (two are the same, one is a later copy, both are folding and in colour), edges untrimmed, slightly browned throughout with occasional oxidation affecting the text. Contemporary limp leather, with metal clasps, somewhat worn but a good, honest volume. Large folding map worn and separated at fold, scattered foxing else fine.- A collection of documents, including four large manuscript maps, tracing the history of a large Mexican hacienda founded on the outskirts of present-day Campeche among the indigenous Mayan population of the Yucatán peninsula. The volume was compiled in 1819 from original documents dated between 1730 and 1819, it records the acquisition records for the Hacienda from local indigenous Maya people and later Spaniards. No other copies have been found. The Yucatán peninsula, lacking precious metals, remained primarily agricultural throughout the colonial era and, as the climate was unsuitable for the introduction of European crops, maize, grown using the indigenous milpa system, continued to be the principal output. Spanish colonists, however, introduced cattle ranches, initially in the sixteenth century but most actively in the eighteenth century. The history of this hacienda, San Agustin de Olá and San Cayetano, therefore, in many respects perfectly epitomizes the nature of society and inter-ethnic relations in the Yucatán peninsula. The manuscript begins with the original purchase of land from the local indigenous popu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Merian, Maria Sibylla
J. F. Bernard, Amsterdam, 1730. Copper engraving, finely hand colored, published in the famous series 'Over de Voortteeling en Wonderbaerlyke veranderingen der Surinaemsche Insecten' by Maria Sibylla Merian. A fine engraving from Maria Sibylla Merian's classic work. Maria Sibylla Merian, daughter of the German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian, devoted herself to the study of European insects and their metamorphoses. As a result of the wealth of tropical varieties being brought back by the Dutch West Indies Company, she decided to visit the Dutch colony of Surinam herself to study and paint the insect life there. She sailed with her daughter Dorothea in June 1699 from Amsterdam and remained in Surinam until 1701. Also Maria Sibylla Merian's elder daughter Johanna went to Surinam to complete her mothers work. Most of the plates were engraved by P. Sluyter and J. Mulder, some by P. Stoopendal. In very good to excellent condition. 330 by 262mm (13 by 10¼ inches).

[MAP - NETHERLANDS - MAAS]. CRUQUIUS, Nicolaas.
De rivier de Merwede, ... Including: No. 3. Caarte ofte afteckening van de rivier de Merwede ...[The Hague, National Printing Office, 1730]. An engraved map of the river Merwede, the main map (53.5 x 124.5) on two sheets at a scale of 1:10,000, together with a separate engraved overview map (22 x 63 cm) with diagrams showing river depth and dike profiles, and tidal and seasonal changes in the water level. Framed (64.5 x 134 & 64.5 x 74 cm). Engraved map commissioned by the Provincial Council of Holland, of the river Merwede by Nicolaas Cruquius, showing the area between Sliedrecht/Hardinxveld to Gorinchem, including parts of the Biesbosch, accompanied by an overview map showing the river though a larger area from Dordrecht to Gorinchem. This map, the most influential river map of its time, demonstrates the high quality of Dutch institutional cartography in the 18th century. It set a standard for Dutch river mapping and, closely related, determined the parameters of the topographical research that should always accompany it. The main purpose of the map was to help find a solution to the frequent flooding in a vast low-lying area along the south river bank called the Biesbosch, problems that had plagued the region chronically since a 15th-century dike breach that was never fully rectified. A fine of an unsurpassed river map and a landmark of Dutch cartography. V.d. Brink, Hollandse rivierkartog. 8; Koeman, Handleiding, p. 103, no. 123.

Seutter Matthäus
Seutter Matthäus, Augsburg. Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii in America, Seutter Matthäus, 1730 Map of the East coast - USA - North America "Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii in America Septentrionali ... " We offer a beautiful and old-coloured copper engraving map by Seutter Matthäus. This interesting and very rare copper engraving map show of the North America East coast including a faithful rendition of the famous Restitutio View of Manhattan. The map itself is from the influential Jansson-Visscher series, which formed the basis for the mapping of the Atlantic seaboard and New England for nearly one hundred years. The cartography follows Visscher's modifications and includes much new information that reflects the Anglicization that had occurred during the period of English rule (1664-1673). Lacus Irocoisiensis (Lake Champlain) remains radically misplaced to the east of the Connecticut River, the St. Lawrence River and Ottawa River are intertwined, and the coast of New England is still imperfectly mapped. The map shows the locations of many native tribes, with two fortified native villages shown. A wide variety of animals are illustrated throughout the map with cows and chickens as well as elk, bear, fox and wild turkeys. Size: Leaf app.: 62,0 x 53,0 cm Map app.: 57,7 x 49,7 cm Condition: Printed on thick paper in original, publishers colours. Big (very skilfull restored) crack with loss on the town-area for a size of 12x24 cm., please look the photos. The crack is very good restored, hardly to recognize

COOKING. FOOD & DRINK. Massialot, François, (ca. 1660-1733)
Paris: Claude Prudhomme, 1733 [and], 1730. Paris: Claude Prudhomme, 1733 [and] 1730. A MIXED 3-VOLUME EDITION. Duodecimo: Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, spines richly tooled in gold, with labels (some wear to extremities, minor defects to leather, corners bumped.) Very nice copies internally, the woodcut plates and text crisp. George Baillie (1664-1738), Scottish politician and parliamentarian, armorial bookplates dated 1724.First published as a single volume in 1691 and enlarged to two volumes in 1712, this three-volume set, printed by Prudhomme, comprises the first two volumes of the 1733-4 edition and the third of the 1730-1 edition. It is clearly a "mixed" rather than "married" set. The bindings are contemporary and perfectly matched, complete with volume numbers on the spines. The 1730-1 edition was the first in three volumes. Cagle (Matter of taste, no. 318) erroneously calls the 1733-4 edition the first to include the third volume. The number of plates in different copies of the two editions vary. This set has 11 plates in the first volume and 12 in the third, for a total of 23. For the 1733-4 edition Cagle calls for only 9 plates in the first volume and 13 in the third, for a total of 22. The set of the 1730-1 edition in the Szathmary Collection at University of Iowa (the only complete set I have traced), has only 8 plates in the first volume and 13 in the third, for a total of 21. "Le cuisinier roial et bourgeois""François Massialot was at home in all three culinary métiers: cuisine, pâtisserie, and confectionery, which made him a rarity in any generation … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seutter Matthäus
Seutter/Augsburg. Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii in America, Seutter Matthäus, 1730 Map of the East coast - USA - North America "Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii in America Septentrionali .

[AUTOGRAPH]. GRONOVIUS, Laurentius Theodorus.
[4] pp.The letter is written by Laurentius Theodorus Gronovius or Laurens Theodoor Gronow (1730-1777) and addressed to his friend (“Waarde Vriend”) Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin (1727-1817), a Dutch/Austrian physician, chemist and botanist who was born in Leiden and had studied medicine at Leiden University together with Gronovius. In the extensive and very interesting letter Gronovius touches upon various subjects (mining, mineralogy, botany, entomology), including the financial consequences, mirroring the difficulties in transmitting money to other countries at the time. He offers for sale 5 pounds of Tinkal (unpurified borax) which was used in the mining industry, and calls attention to ample supply of good tea in Leiden. Furthermore he urges Jacquin to send to him, via Leipzig, not only a specimen of the Sphinx atropus (death's head moth), but also the chest he has asked for with specimens of various crystals needed for his studies. In return, he writes, he will send a big package of plants not yet identified and collected some decades ago in the Dutch East Indies by the well-known botanist Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) and Theodor Sas (d. 1704), as well as plants from Surinam, Pennsylvania and The Cape.He will also send Jacquin his recently published second volume of his Zoophylacium ... animalia quadrupedia, amphibia, pisces, insecta, ..., published in Leiden in 1764 (Vol. 1: 1763, vol. 3: 1781) as a present.Only some damage from the opening of the seal, which is skilfully repaired. (5,7 x 8 inch). From: 'De Europische Insecten' by Maria Sibylla Merian, published by J.F. Bernard in Amsterdam, 1730. These plates are from the expanded, Dutch edition of the book that was also published in German in 1730, as 'Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennahrung'. Although the book is a work on entomology, the depicted insects are unidentified. However, each plate features a number of moths, butterflies, flies and their associated larvae and caterpillars. The colouring of the plate is modern. Ref: Bibliographical reference: *Nissen, BBI, 1342; *Landwehr, Col.pl., 136 Very rare decorative insect/botanical print with gorgeous hand colouring.Made by Maria Sibylla Merian after own design. Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt, 1647-Amsterdam, 1717) was a naturalist and scientist who studied plants and insects. She also made detailed paintings of the subjects she studied. Her biological father was the engraver and publisher Matthaus Merian, and when he died, Merian's mother married Jacob Marrel. It was Marrel who encouraged young Maria Sibylla to start painting, and at the age of 13 she had painted her first insects and plants. Her study of insects, and especially the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, was much celebrated in high society. It contested the notion that insects were "born from mud" in spontaneous generation. Merian studied specimens (partly in her own captivity), and described the life cycles of 186 insect s … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRONK, Cornelis.
Gezigt op de Leidschevaart & Catrijnepoort te Utrecht.[Utrecht, ca. 1730]. 23 x 29 cm. Washed pen and ink drawing on paper. Original washed pen and ink drawing showing a view across the Leidschevaart waterway toward the western city gate of Utrecht, the Catharijnepoort, by Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). This gate was designed by Paulus Moreelse in 1621, and was the most important western city gate, where the road from The Hague entered the city. It was demolished in the 19th century. The viewpoint of this drawing is situated on the tow path along the Leidschevaart near the second Moesgracht. Visible in the background are from left to right: the St. Jobsgasthuis on the Vleutenseweg, the mill "De Meiboom" on the Paardenveld and the tower of the Jacobikerk.Pronks drawings were often copied and many prints were engraved after his work, especially by Hendrik Spilman and Caspar Philips. These engraved views were published by Isaak Tirion in Amsterdam, for example in Spilmans 'T verheerlykt Nederland (Amsterdam, 1745) and the Utrecht volume (XI) of Tegenwoordige staat der Nederlanden. An anonymous copy of the present Pronk drawing was published in C.C.S. Wilmer's book on drawings of Utrecht.Very fine drawing in good condition. Cf. C.C.S. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum, gilt and gauffered edges. [1] letterpress leaf plus [1], 100 engraved ll. A wholly engraved edition except for the letterpress title-page, printed by Reinier and Josua Ottens (ca. 1726/50) from the plates of the pirated edition of 1695 of the most celebrated and most famous work of Jan and Caspar Luyken. The plates in the pirated edition may have been engraved from the original Luyken drawings and are not in mirror image. The pirated edition, and consequently our edition as well, is quite differently arranged: all trades and professions are put in alphabetical order, thus presenting a rational and handy dictionary of Dutch contemporary trades and professions. Also the texts are totally different: instead of Luyken's 2-line mottos above and 6-line emblematic poetry below, this edition has single titles engraved above, and an elegant quatrain by the Dutch poet Anthony Janssen van ter Goes (ca. 1626-1699) below. This pirated edition was clearly intended for the very different market of a more worldly public. The depictions of the trades and professions themselves are virtually the same, except for the fact that the plates are somewhat firmer and the impressions stronger tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ATLAS - EUROPE]. CLEYNHENS, Bernardus.
Accuraat geografisch kaart-boekje of zak-atlas van het keyzerryk en geheel Duytsland, de Oostenrykse Nederlanden, ...Haarlem, Bernardus Cleynhens, [ca. 1747?]. Small 8vo (16 x 10 cm). With 25 double-page engraved maps (2 overview maps), and an engraved plate with 8 scales, all hand-coloured, partly in outline. Half textured red cloth (ca. 1860?). 40, 23, [1 blank] pp. plus maps and plate of scales. A surprisingly rare pocket atlas illustrating the theatre of the "tegenwoordigen" (present) war, probably meaning the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) but possibly the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The title-page notes that it is suited for officers, travellers and lovers of geography to carry in a pocket. The text (in Dutch) gives a geographic description only of "Duytsland" (Germany), including Austria, Bohemia and a few other areas, whereas the maps also cover the Low Countries, the English Channel, northwest France and to the east as far as Warsaw, Krakow and Belgrade. The 23 detail maps were designed so that they could be assembled with the key map to make a single wall map, whose cartographic image would measure 53 x 90 cm.With a contemporary owner's, bookplate, embossed stamp and library labels. With the text leaves somewhat browned, not affecting the maps or the plate with scales, and the first 2 leaves slightly worn, but generally in good condition. A rare pocket atlas from the War of the Spanish Succession. Koeman I, Cle 1; STCN (2 copies); WorldCat (2 copies).

An anonymous French manuscript treatise on fortification, with 32 folding colour drawings showing not only fortifications but also military buildings such as a powder magazine, arsenal, etc., as well as gates, bridges, etc. Some explicitly note that they follow Jean Errard (1554-1610), Antoine de Ville (1596-1656), Blaise François, Comte de Pagan (1604-1665), Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) and Menno van Coehorn (1634-1704), the greatest 17th-century French and Dutch masters of the art of fortification. The fortified cities shown include Saint-Martin-de-Ré, Strasbourg and Thionville. Each of the four parts has its own title with Traite des fortifications followed by the subtitle for the relevant part.In about a dozen pages, the tops of the capitals or flourishes of a large title or heading word have been slightly shaved by the binder and there are occasional minor smudges, small stains or spots, but the manuscript is otherwise in very good condition. The binding is rubbed, the hinges cracked and the spine damaged, but the sewing supports remain intact and nearly all of the tooling on the spine is clear. An interesting and well illustrated treatise on fortification and military a … [Click Below for Full Description]
