Venice, Christopher Zane, 1730. Condition: Gut. Large 8vo [232 x 170 mm] (52), CCCXII pp. With engraved frontispiz, 1 text engraving, 5 folded engraved maps and 1 folded engraved plate. Contemporary vellum.FIRST EDITION. Very rare and curious work. Ignjat Ðurdevic (1675-1737) was Croatian Baroque writer from the city of Dubrovnik. In the present book he tries to prove that St. Paul has stranded on his last trip not on Malta, but on the Croatian island of Mljet. For a long time, scholars have sought to identify the island called "Melite" (Acts 28.1). While it had long been assumed that Paul had been shipwrecked in Malta, it has recently been proven that it must have been the west Greek island of Cephallonia. Nonetheless, this book has lost none of its fascination. A Croatian translation was first published in 2008. - partly stained; two maps washed, otherwise in good condition.Bibliography: Thomas Hartwell Horne - A Manual of Biblical Bibliography. [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Very good. (London): Tho. Ward and E. Wicksteed, 1730. First edition. Two volumes. xiii, [3 errata and catalogue], 1-364; [2], 364-516, [70] p. Illustrated with woodcuts in text (one full page) and with 41 copper engraved plates, all but 2 fold-out, mostly views and statuary (24 in Vol. 1 and 17 in Vol. 2). Two of these are of fold-outs of a larger format (ruins of marble bridge near Narni [plate mark 55cm x 23cm], and order of statues in the gallery in Florence [plate mark 35.8cm x 22.5cm]). Plates mainly by Vandergucht. Head and tail ornaments by Henry Woodfall (as per ESTC). Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked. three-quarter purple crushed morocco, with purple cloth. Spines richly gilt in compartments, raised bands and gilt stamped lettering, and red gilt-lettered morocco labels. 4to (25.5cm x 19.6cm). Very Good condition. Bindings appear to have been very finely rebacked, retaining endpapers, but such a good job that it's hard to tell. Large folding plate of the ruins near Narni bridge is uniformally age-toned. Scattered mainly light handling/thumb marks, generally in margins. Two leaves with careful and unobtrusive marginal repairs. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images. Maria Sibylla Merian
Amsterdam, 1730. This charming, hand-colored entomology engraving is from Maria Sibylla Merian's "De Europische Insecten". This first Dutch edition of the work was published in Amsterdam by Jean Frederic Bernard in 1730. It was originally entitled "Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennahrung" when published in Nuremberg. --- Maria Sibylla Merian was a naturalist and artist. Her contributions to entomology were nevery truly acknowledged in her lifetime, but she is considered a groundbreaker in the fields of botany and zoology. She made detailed observations of live specimens, which was a departure from previous studies that used preserved specimens. She focused great detail on the processes of metamorphosis which had not been studied so comprehensively before her work. --- "Her portrayals of living insects and other animals were imbued with a charm, a minuteness of observation and an artistic sensibility that had not previously been seen in a natural history book". Merian's "artistic groupings of the insects amidst the tropical flora makes this book one of the most beautiful and unusual in the whole range of natural history" (Landwehr Dutch Books with Coloured Plates, p.28). --- Overall Very Good to Excellent. There may be a few minor marks, fox marks, or imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

EDWARD WRIGHT
London: (Londres): Tho.

An excellent example of this very well-illustrated Grand Tour by Edward Wright, with an emphasis on ancient statuary. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[London: Mount & Page], This chart was prepared for the First Edition of John Thornton's The English Pilot. The Third Book, a pilot guide with charts describing the sea-route round Africa to the East Indies and Far East, the first volume of its kind published anywhere in Europe. This is the third state of the chart with the imprint of Samuel Thornton erased, but not replaced; the plate had passed to Mount and Page after the death of Samuel Thornton in 1715 who made the alteration.
