[The World and Continents - Five Maps]

Augsburg: circa 1730. Copper-engraved maps, with full original colour, Worlld map with losses to bottom margin, and with re-enforcements to the top and bottom margins. Americas map has been re-backed along bottom margin and part of the right margin, trimmed close to or within platemark on right and left sides. Asia map water-stained near bottom of centerfold, and mild discoloration along centrefold, bottom margin is re-backed with repaired losses. Africa map has a water stain on the left sideborder and into the image of the map around the Cape Verde Islands, and at the bottom margin. Bottom margin is re-backed, with repaired minor losses and tears. Europe map expertly re-backed, repaired tears and minor losses to centerfold and on either side of the centerfold. Discoloration and fading in places.each 20 3/4 x 23 1/8 inches. Superb maps of the World and the Continents by one of the great eighteenth-century German cartographers. George Matthäus Seutter learned the map publishing business as an apprentice to J. B. Homann of Nuremberg. In 1707, he moved to Augsburg where he established himself as Homann's main rival, becoming Geographer to the Imperial Court in 1715. Seutter copied many geographical details from his former protégé's maps, and the rival houses duelled with each other in order to see which one could best epitomise the southern German Baroque ethic, with its lavish decorative embellishments and iconography of Roman Catholic piety. The World Map entitled Diversi Globi Terr- Aquei Statione Variante... exemplifies the new world view of the eighteenth-century. Although the familiar twenty-four Classical windheads still adorn the image, in place of the traditional allegorical scenes, the map is really a collection of "scientific" perspectives of Earth. Around the large hemispheres of the Old and New Worlds, there are polar views, "oblique" views, and perspectives illustrating the sphericality of the Earth. The Earth is no longer a mysterious object, but is now quantifiable, progressively subject to the empirical gaze of mankind. The map of North and South America, Novus Orbis sive America Meridionalis et Septentrionalis..., features resplendent examples of Seutter's cartouches. The title cartouche is inhabited by specimens of exotic birds, flying fish, and a native chief shaded by an umbrella. Surrounding a descriptive note about the New World, in the upper left, Europeans are seated at a table while natives kneel and deposit riches before a crucifix surmounted by the Virgin Mary with the cross, a chalice and a book. The map shows California as an island, at the same time featuring many coastal sites including San Clemente and Santa Barbara. Asia cum omnibus Imperiis, Provinciis, Statibus et Insulis... shows the continent during the zenith of both the Mughal and Chinese Empire, the latter prominently featuring The Great Wall. The cartouches feature Asian princes, a Chinese scholar with a cup of tea, an elephant, a lion and a pair of warriors. The note to the Reader in the upper right, is a homily on the ultimate importance of eternal and spiritual values over the evanescent values of temporal riches. Africa iuxta navigationes et observationes recentissimas aucta et in sua Regna et Status divisa... is beautifully decorated with a large, ornate cartouche by Gottfried Rogg that features natives, pyramids, and indigenous animals such as a leopard, a lion and a crocodile. Faithful to the period, the map is full of interesting geographical speculations, revealing that Europeans actually knew very little about the regions of Africa not immediately on the coasts or the banks of major rivers. Seutter allows the Ptolemaic myth that the Nile is fed by two large lakes to persist. Europa Religionis Christianæ, Morum et Pacis ac Belli Artium Cultu Omnium Terrarum Orbis Partium Præstantiss... is the title of the Europe map. The cartouche avows the claims of the title: "[Christian Europe in all the World the most Accomplished in the Ways of Peace and War and Cultivation of the Arts]", as a chain of cherubs descend from the Godhead along with the symbols of Catholicism. A queen at the left of the title represents good government, and below Athena and Apollo represent war and the arts. Tooley & Bricker, Landmarks of Mapmaking, p. 167-170.

Carte General de la Caroline Dresse sur les Memoires le Plus Nouveaux Par Le Sieua S***

Amsterdam, 1730. No Binding. Fine. 22 ¼ x 18 ¼ inches. Full original color; fine. A superb, original color example of the first map of the Carolinas published outside of England. Though Mortier credited the map to Sanson, it was in fact closely derived from an English map, the extremely rare, separately issued "A New Map of CAROLINA" published by Thornton, Morden and Lea in 1685. Charleston is noted at its location on the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, both on the map and in an inset showing Charles Towne and the nearby plantations. Burden calls this edition of the map "very rare." Cumming 120; Burden 767, State 2.

Commentarius Literalis in Omnes Libros veteris et novi testamenti. In nine volumes

      - Dominici Marescandoli, 1730 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An eighteenth-century commentary of all the books of the Old and New Testament in Latin. This is the first Latin translation of Calmet's work, by Giovanni Domenico Mansi . Features several folding maps and diagrams, head and tail pieces and capitals. Complete in eight volumes bound into nine. Antoine Augustin Calmet (26 February 1672 25 October 1757) was a French Benedictine. He was educated at the Benedictine priory of Breuil in Commercy, and in 1688 joined the same order in the abbey of St-Mansuy at Toul, where he was admitted to profession 23 October of the following year. After his ordination, 17 March 1696, he was appointed to teach philosophy and theology at Moyenmoutier Abbey. Here with the help of his brethren he began to gather the material for his commentary of the Bible, which was first published between 1707 and 1716. It was reprinted several times. The work inaugurated a new method of Biblical exegesis. Its author departed from the custom of giving an allegorical (mystical) and tropological (moral) interpretation besides the literal. The most valuable part of the commentary were the introductory prefaces to the several books and 114 learned dissertations on special topics. Calmet was a pious religious as well as a learned man, and one of the most distinguished members of the Congregation of St. Vanne. In recognition of these qualities he was elected prior of Lay-Saint-Christophe in 1715, abbot of St-Lopold at Nancy in 1718, and of Senones Abbey in 1729; he was also twice entrusted with the office of president or superior general of the congregation. Gian (Giovanni) Domenico Mansi (16 February 1692 27 September 1769) was an Italian theologian, scholar and historian, known for his massive works on the Church councils. His long career was filled chiefly with the re-editing of erudite ecclesiastical works with notes and complementary matter. His name appears on the title-pages of ninety folio volumes and numerous quartos. Condition: Rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally very good with just a little shelfwear and fading to the spines. Three hinges are strained but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound with just one or two leaves working loose. Many pages are remarkably bright for the age of this set, but there are intermittant instances of browning. All volumes have instances of damp staining:in some cases with just occasionalsmall marginal tidemarks, in others significantand some mould to lower margins ie in need of cleaning up. There are a few scattered spots and dusting to the textblock edges, occasionally affecting the margins. There are ink stamps of St Mary's Priory, London to all titles and some other pages. A fewsmall closed tears to some foldingplates. Overall: GOOD..

Carte d'Afrique, Dressee pour l'usage du Roy

Paris: Chez l'Auteur sur le Quay de l'Horloge du Palais., circa 1730. Copper-engraved map with original outline colour, printed on thick laid paper, in excellent condition. 20 x 26 3/8 inches. An important early map of Africa by the celebrated French cartographer, Guillaume de L'Isle. Guillaume de L'Isle was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are also invariably elegant and attractive. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle's Atlas de Geographie, which was reissued posthumously from 1730 to 1774. The map covers the whole of Africa including southern Europe and the whole of the Middle East. Geographical knowledge in Africa was mostly garnered from a few early missionaries, sea captains and traders, who explored the coast, but had no direct knowledge of the interior. Even the great rivers of Africa were for many reasons unexplored by the whites. The huge trade in slaves, ivory, gold and other items took place at coastal forts through middle men. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did any degree of accuracy begin to appear in maps of Africa. Nevertheless, De l'Isle, characteristically, amassed a great deal of information based on reports about the continent, and some of it is in a general way true: the long thin lake north of the Zambezi corresponds to Lake Tanganyika; two source rivers join to form the Nile; and there are ranges of mountains in the southwest that go down to the Cape. Francesco and Andrea Zucchi were responsible for the copperplate engraving for this work: The title-page bears a copperplate vignette, with four other copperplate vignettes and one decorated capital present as well as the oversized, folding plate. Giulio Cesare Becelli edited and introduced this collection of Maffei's plays, providing what Gamba calls "tre erudite prefazioni." The author was an archeologist and man of letters whose tragedy Merope (present here) achieved enormous popularity in not only his native Italy but also almost every country where translations appeared, including France, England, Germany, and Holland. Gamba 2323; not in Brunet. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, outer edges yapp, spine with hand-inked title; vellum torn and partially lost over lower edge of front cover, with signs of wear and small spots of staining elsewhere.         A New & Exact Map of the Electonate of Brunswick-Lunenburg and ye rest of ye Kings Dominion in Germany

London: H. Moll, T. & J. Bowles, P. Overton & J. King, [circa 1730]. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in excellent condition. 25 1/2 x 41 3/8 inches. A magnificent map celebrating the ascension of the Hanoverian Dynasty to the British throne, depicting the new King's German possessions Herman Moll first printed this map immediately after George I came to the throne of Great Britain. Queen Anne (Stuart) died without issue, and after the legislated exclusion of her close, but Catholic, relatives, her distant Protestant cousin, the Elector of Hanover, was deemed to be her legitimate heir. It is amusing to note that even though George I would rule from 1714 to 1728, it is said that he never learned to speak more than a few words of the "King's English." This map principally focuses on the large region of northern Germany that was ruled by George, one of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. As depicted on the map, this realm included the great port of Hamburg, as well as the important cities of Lünenberg and Hanover, in addition to the university town of Göttingen. As noted in the lines and table in the lower-right of the map, this domain contained vast natural wealth, including numerous forests and 110 mines which yielded vast quantities of silver. A cartographic inset in the upper left details the Elector's newest possession, the Duchy of Saxon Lauwenberg. The inset to the upper left depicts the King's triumphal route though the North Sea from Hamburg to London. This grand composition is finished by a spectacular title cartouche featuring all manner of armaments, surmounted by the Royal coat of arms. The King was so delighted by Moll's finished manuscript, that he awarded the fellow German "a Gold Medal" as a "mark of his Royal Favour." The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, a New and Compleat Atlas. Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of great scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseatic port city of Bremen, Germany. Joining a number of his countrymen, he fled the turmoil of the Scanian Wars for London, and in 1678 is first recorded as working there as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas. It was not long before Moll found himself as a charter member of London's most interesting social circle, which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill. It was at this establishment that speculators met to trade equities (most notoriously South Sea Company shares). Moll's coffeehouse circle included the scientist Robert Hooke, the archaeologist William Stuckley, the authors Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, and the intellectually-gifted pirates William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and William Hacke. From these friends, Moll gained a great deal of privileged information that was later conveyed in his cartographic works, some appearing in the works of these same figures. Moll was highly astute, both politically and commercially, and he was consistently able to craft maps and atlases that appealed to the particular fancy of wealthy individual patrons, as well as the popular trends of the day. In many cases, his works are amongst the very finest maps of their subjects ever created with toponymy in the English language.       London 1730 - An engraved plate by William Henry Toms after Egbert van Heemskerck, 380 x 313 mms., "a satire on satire on prostitution set in a brothel in which all the men have been given the heads of apes and the women those of cats. In the centre of the room a prostitute sits on the knee of an old man who fondles her, her legs splayed; she holds a glass in one hand and a flask in the other. A magistrate wearing a lace edged hat and holding a large candle stands over them. Constables with staves stand in the open door, behind which the prostitute's pimp (referred to as her bully in the verse beneath) is hiding; he is dressed as a grenadier. On the right, the brothel-keeper holds up a tally-board pointing out one of the symbols to three men who are startled at the entry of the constables; one is seated at a table holding a glass, another holds a large candle. On the table is a large flask, another rests on the floor beside a big jug, and another lies broken in pieces. In the background on the right a couple peer from being the curtains of a large bed. Hanging from the ceiling is a large birdcage on which a bird is perched" (British Museum Catalogue 1866,0407.53). There is a short tear in the lower leaf-hand margin going into the engraving and some small pieces missing from white border, somewhat dust-stained.

Bibliografia: Martin & Martin 97; Lowery 328. Dimensioni 580x480. A nice example of Seutter's decorative adaptation of De L'Isle's important map of 1703, later printed by Tobias Conrad Lotter. The map provides a view of North America from the Great Lakes through the West Indies . The British colonies are confined east of the Appalachian Mountains, France controls the Mississippi valley and Florida, and Spain possesses Mexico and New Mexico. Political divisions as dictated by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. While geographically nearly identical to Delisle's chart, this map is very decorative with the lower left corner filled with a huge sea battle and the Atlantic filled with four inset plans of Panama, Havana, Carthagena and Vera Cruz. The details of the Mississippi Valley were the most a radical departure from earlier maps, accurately depicting the information provided by the French Jeusuits in North America in the late 17th Century. Nice detail along the Rio Grande and in Texas. Richly annotated with information regarding the Spanish activities in the Gulf of Mexico. A highly decorative full colour example of this desirable map. Bibliografia: Martin & Martin 97; Lowery 328 (both referencing Lotter's reissue of the map in 1770). Augsburg Augsburg
