Trés bel exemplaire.§ 4. Sir Dudley Digges The Compleat Ambassador. It was at this time that there appeared in print a posthumouspublication by Sir Dudley Digges, late master of the rolls ( 1583-1639 ), 13entitled The Compleat Ambassador: or Two Treaties of the Intended Marriageof Qu. Elizabeth of Glorious Memory. In this work, the history of thenegotiations as to the Anjou and Alençon matches carried on duringWalsingham's embassy ( 1570-3, dates covering that of the massacre of St.Bartholomew ) became public property in the shape of the despatches ofWalsingham, and the replies of Burghley, Leicester and Sir Thomas Smith. Nosimilar revelation had hitherto taken place in England, where, notwithstanding the assiduous exertions of James I's diplomatists, verylittle attention had been paid to their activity by outsiders. But thepublisher, encouraged by the success of Cabala, 14 a curious medley ofletters and papers of the reigns of James and Charles I which appeared in1654, anticipated a great success for his experiment, and was not deceived. The time was propitious for a study of the diplomatic processes of the mostaggressively protestant of queen Elizabeth's ambassadors, whose policy ofsecuring the alliance of France against Spain was just about to experience arevival. Thus, the book, having rapidly gone into a second edition, was, indue course, translated into French, and came to be repeatedly cited inWicquefort's celebrated manual, L'Ambassadeur et ses Fonctions. histoire diplomatie [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Commentarius Literalis in Omnes Libros veteris et novi testamenti. In nine volumes

      - Dominici Marescandoli 1730 - An eighteenth-century commentary of all the books of the Old and New Testament in Latin. This is the first Latin translation of Calmet's work, by Giovanni Domenico Mansi . Features several folding maps and diagrams, head and tail pieces and capitals. Complete in eight volumes bound into nine. Antoine Augustin Calmet (26 February 1672 25 October 1757) was a French Benedictine. He was educated at the Benedictine priory of Breuil in Commercy, and in 1688 joined the same order in the abbey of St-Mansuy at Toul, where he was admitted to profession 23 October of the following year. After his ordination, 17 March 1696, he was appointed to teach philosophy and theology at Moyenmoutier Abbey. Here with the help of his brethren he began to gather the material for his commentary of the Bible, which was first published between 1707 and 1716. It was reprinted several times. The work inaugurated a new method of Biblical exegesis. Its author departed from the custom of giving an allegorical (mystical) and tropological (moral) interpretation besides the literal. The most valuable part of the commentary were the introductory prefaces to the several books and 114 learned dissertations on special topics. Calmet was a pious religious as well as a learned man, and one of the most distinguished members of the Congregation of St. Vanne. In recognition of these qualities he was elected prior of Lay-Saint-Christophe in 1715, abbot of St-Lopold at Nancy in 1718, and of Senones Abbey in 1729; he was also twice entrusted with the office of president or superior general of the congregation. Gian (Giovanni) Domenico Mansi (16 February 1692 27 September 1769) was an Italian theologian, scholar and historian, known for his massive works on the Church councils. His long career was filled chiefly with the re-editing of erudite ecclesiastical works with notes and complementary matter. His name appears on the title-pages of ninety folio volumes and numerous quartos. Condition: Rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally very good with just a little shelfwear and fading to the spines. Three hinges are strained but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound with just one or two leaves working loose. Many pages are remarkably bright for the age of this set, but there are intermittant instances of browning. All volumes have instances of damp staining:in some cases with just occasionalsmall marginal tidemarks, in others significantand some mould to lower margins ie in need of cleaning up. There are a few scattered spots and dusting to the textblock edges, occasionally affecting the margins. There are ink stamps of St Mary's Priory, London to all titles and some other pages. A fewsmall closed tears to some foldingplates. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A New Map of The North Parts of America claimed by France under the names of Louisiana, Mississippi, Canada and New France with the adjoyning terriories of England and Spain.Herman Moll 1720.

London. 1720 [1730] - 2 sheets joined. Size: 630 x 1040 mm. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes, some staining, however, the overall condition is excellent. Copperplate map with original outline colour. This interesting and intriguing map by Herman Moll was published as a possible rebuttal to the Frenchman Guillaume DeLisle's claims to French possessions in America via his earlier map of 1718 of the Mississippi valley. This map, and that of Delisle, were strategic and important weapons in the cartographic war that raged at that time between France and Britain for European dominance in America. The map is decorated with a large inset of "The Indian Fort Sasquesahanor", the fort according DeLisle's map marked the dividing line between French and British territories. There are two inset plans: that of Annapolis harbour, and the mouth of the Mississippi river in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a delightful cartouche dedicated to Thomas Bromsall. This is a map that has strong decorative, cartographic and political appeal to the collector and scholar alike.

Recentissima Asiae Delineatio, Qua Status et Imperia Totius Orientis unacum Orientalibus Indiis exhibentur.

      J. B. Homann, Nuremberg 1730 - An early map of Asia that includes the northern tip of Australia and Papua, New Guinea, by the celebrated German cartographer, J. B. Homann. Johann Baptiste Homann established in the early years of the 18th century the most successful map publishing firm in Germany. His prolific business, which his family continued after his death, dominated Germany's map market for over a century and produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. He started the firm in Nuremberg, and,in 1715, he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. This is a lovely example of Homann's first map of Asia. It includes the northern tip of Australia (Nova Hollandia) Carpentaria, Nova Britannia and the Marianas. Hokkaido is identified as Terra Yedso and the fictional Compagnie Land, to the northeast of Japan. Dampier's passage shown stretching between New Guinea and New Britain and marks his discovery of New Britain in 1700. The map is a wonderful example of Homann's ornate, Baroque style. The title cartouche shows an Asian potentate pointing his scepter at three subjects, who bow on their hands and knees before him. The other cartouche in the upper right corner with a note to the viewer shows a procession of soldiers carrying a Hindu idol followed by men playing gongs, drums and wind instruments. Tooley, Maps and Map-makers 27, 107-108. Engraving with hand-colouring. Excellent condition.

Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661- December 14, 1741) was a French historian and educationist. He was born at Paris. He was the son of a cutler, and at the age of twenty-two was made a master in the Collège du Plessis. In 1694 he was rector of the University of Paris, rendering great service among other things by reviving the study of Greek. He held that post for two years instead of one, and in 1699 was appointed principal of the Collège de Beauvais. Rollin held Jansenist principles, and even went so far as to defend the miracles supposed to be worked at the tomb of François de Paris, commonly known as Deacon Paris. Unfortunately his religious opinions deprived him of his appointments and disqualified him for the rectorship, to which in 1719 he had been re-elected. It is said that the same reason prevented his election to the Académie française, though he was a member of the Academie des Inscriptions. Shortly before his death he protested publicly against the acceptance of the bull Unigenitus. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life, when he had been forbidden to teach. His once famous Ancient History (Paris, 1730-38), and the less generally read Roman History, which followed it, were avowed compilations, uncritical and somewhat inaccurate. But they instructed and interested generation after generation almost to the present day. A more original and really important work was his Traité des études (Paris, 1726-31). It contains a summary of what was even then a reformed and innovative system of education, including a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue, and discarded the medieval traditions that had lingered in France. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Hibernian Patriot: Being a Collection of the Drapier's Letters to the People of Ireland, concerning Mr. Wood's Brass Half-Pence. Together with Considerations on the Attempt made to pass that Coin. And Reasons for the People of Ireland's refusing it. To which are added, Poems and Songs relating to the same Subject

Printed at Dublin. London: Reprinted and Sold by A. Moor-, 1730 - Swift's pseudonymous letters were first issued separately in 1824, then collected first by the Dublin edition of 1725 under the title "Fraud Detected-"; this is the first London edition. In 1722, the English Parliament granted to one William Wood, mine-owner and iron-monger, the right to coin the extravagant sum of £100,000 in copper half-pence. Swift was outraged at what he perceived not only as a swindle to advance the interests of a particular moneyed interest, but also as one more example of the monstrous tyranny exercised by England over the Irish. In the persona of a humble shopkeeper, Swift attacked the proposal on several sound economic grounds, and pushed his conclusions to their logical and absurd consequences. Having calculated the read (as opposed to the nominal) value of Wood's half-pence, and taking it for granted that bad money drives out good, Swift concludes hilariously that a lady going out shopping will need to be "followed by a Car loaded with Mr. Wood's money," and that a banker will need twelve hundred horse to carry the cash he needs in his bank. But there is also a thunderously Swiftian appeal to freedom: "Were not the people of Ireland born as free as those of England? How have they foreited their Freedom? Is not their Parliament as fair a Representative of the People, as that of England? And hath not their Privy Council as great or a greater share in the Administration of publick Affairs? Are they not subjects of the same King? Does not the same Sun shine over them? And have they not the same God for their Protector? Am I a Free-Man in England, and do I become a Slave in six hours by crossing the Channel?" Swift's "Drapier" urges a boycott of Wood's coins upon his countrymen: "If a Madman should come to my Shop with a Handful of Dirt raked out of the Kennel, and offer it in payment for Ten Yards of Stuff, I would Pity or Laugh at him, or, if his Behaviour deserved it, kick him out of my Doors. And if Mr. Wood comes to demand any Gold or Silver, or Commodities for which I have payed my Gold and Silver, in Exchange for his Trash, can he deserve or expect better treatment?" Swift's publication fanned the flames of controversy both in Ireland and England; and his victory was complete when by the end of August 1725, Wood's grant was withdrawn. "Precisely to what extent Swift had been instrumental in bringing it about can never be assessed. It is certain that he had many able helpers, as it is clear that the populace gave him pre-eminence, so that for the rest of his life he was the people's idol-" (Dobrée, English Literature in the Early Nineteenth Century 1700-1740, p. 439) First London edition. 8vo.
