Miscellanea analytica de seriebus et quadraturis.

[12], 250 [2] pp., contemporary half calf (rebacked, extremities worn), gilt label to spine, mild browning and foxing throughout, old markings and ink annotations in text (some trimmed at the time binding), occasional ink smudges, leaf S1 torn at top margin with loss of a few headline letters, leaf Ff4 torn at lower corner without loss of text, old handwritten comments in Latin to front flyleaf. All in all a fair copy of a rare work. ---- Cantor III, 622ff., DSB IX, 452ff., Norman 131. - FIRST EDITION of Moivre's first published attempt at approximating the terms of a binomial expansion, or the normal approximation to the binomial distribution. This anonymous work is often regarded as the original appearance of the 'normal curve.' He later completed his attempt and published his solution in a pamphlet entitled Approximatio ad summam terminorum binomii (a + b)o in seriem expansi (1733). 'Moivre's discovery greatly clarified the concept of probability in his own time, and became the most fruitful single instrument of discovery used in probability theory and statistics for the next two centuries' (Norman).         The Method of Fluxions both Direct and Inverse. The former being a translation from the celebrated Marquis de L’Hospital’s Analyse des infinements [sic] petits: and the latter supply’d by the translator.

Printed for William Innys 1730 - FIRST EDITION of this translation, with 15 folding engraved plates, repair to marginal tear in last leaf of the preliminaries, and this leaf also with a splash mark and a small hole resulting in the loss of the page numeral, title-page a bit stained just at the edges, a little minor staining elsewhere, pp. xix, iv, 238, [i], 212, [2], 8vo, contemporary calf, double gilt fillets on sides enclosing a roll tooled border in blind, rebacked and re-rebacked somewhat crudely, corners worn, ownership inscription of William Gartland of Dublin on title, and various notes by him (see below), sound Not a rare book in terms of library holdings (not super-abundant either), but extremely scarce in commerce: there was no copy in the Macclesfield Library, and there has not been a copy at auction since at least 1975.‘The rift between British and Continental mathematicians during the eighteenth century was not sufficiently wide to prevent Stone in 1730 from publishing an English translation of L'Hospital's Analyse des infiniment petits, ten years before Buffon reciprocally prepared a French translation of Newton's Method of Fluxions The translator opens with praise of the author's work, "the Character whereof is so well establish'd", but adds that out of regard to Sir Isaac Newton he has altered some of the language and notation of the original to conform to the Newtonian. Increments or differentials, for example, are taken as fluxions, inasmuch as they are proportional to the latter; and [Newton's dot notation is used instead of Leibnizian differentials] ‘Stone's translation, in part I, does not depart much from the original, and the diagrams are faithful reproductions of those of L'Hospital. Some new material is added, however, on logarithms, exponentials, and trigonometric functions. The second part or appendix (separately paginated) is on the inverse method of fluxions [i.e. integration], and this constitutes a new work. L'Hospital apparently had hoped that his treatise would sometime be completed by a second part on the integral calculus. The pages of the Analyse (even in later editions) carry the heading I. Part, but the author never completed another part. Stone was but one of several who undertook to compose a suitable second half. His attempt was so successful that it was translated into French and published in 1735, "servant de suite aux infiniment petits de M. le Marquis de l'Hospital."‘The Analyse des infiniment petits continued throughout the eighteenth century to be the standard elementary manual on higher mathematics’ (The European Mathematical Awakening, by Frank J. Swetz, pp. 203-4)The Analyse of L'Hospital (1696) was the first published book on the calculus, but it treated only differential calculus, and did so using Leibnizian differential notation. Provenance: William Gartland of Dublin. There was a surveyor of this name working in the city in the 1840s, and certainly the exquisitely neat notes in his hand would grace any engraved map. The notes fill the front free endpaper and occur sporadically amoung the preliminary pages. They concern the history of fluxions, the authors concerned, and the books. (ESTC T110037)

A New & Exact Map of the Coast, Countries and Islands within ye Limits of ye South Sea Company

      H. Moll, T. & J. Bowles, P. Overton & J. King, London 1730 - A fascinating and historically important map relating to the infamous "South Sea Bubble" and English piracy on the Spanish Main This fascinating map represents the synergy of one of the most sensational economic phenomena in British history and the intrigue surrounding the designs of London-based pirate adventurers. In 1711, as Britain was gaining the upper hand over Spain in Queen Anne's War (1702-14), the Lord Treasurer, Robert Hartley granted exclusive trading rights to commerce with Spanish America to a society of investors known as the South Sea Company. While some of the Company's members were actual corsairs who wished to attack Spanish galleons, by 1713 the Company was given official legitimacy as it was granted a privilege by Madrid to send one trading vessel a year to the region in question, in addition to being granted some involvement in the 'Asiento,' the African slave trade. While the Company did not actually make its first trading voyage until 1717, and even then only made a modest profit, wild speculation consumed London as thousands of investors came to believe that the Company promised to deliver astronomical riches in Andean silver and gold and slave sales. The Company's association with respected politicians and merchants added justification to the ebullient media campaign launched on numerous broadsides. The Exchequer loaned the Company over £11.7 million in public funds (an outrageous sum) and by August, 1720 individual shares reached a staggering high of £1,000. Described as "a company for carrying out an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody knows what it is," the share price began to rapidly plummet all the way down to a low of £100 per share once a few commentators began to ask the obvious question. The so-called "South Sea Bubble" had burst, leaving both the Exchequer and numerous investors with massive debts, based on loans leveraged against the share price while it was at a high. As we know today, it was not the first, and by no means the last occasion that the public had been swept up in such irrational exuberance. After its near collapse the Company managed to reconstitute itself, and it continued to maintain a limited trade with the Spanish Main until the 1760s, and from then until 1850 it served as debt management agency for the Exchequer. The main section of this magnificent map embraces all of South America, the West Indies and the southern portions of North America, including Florida and California (which is assumed to be an island). Spanish America is shown divided into its numerous captaincies and all aspects of the coastlines are labelled in great detail. A dotted line located far out into the ocean denotes "The Sea Limit" of the Company's exclusive operational space. The detailed lines of ocean currents are derived from Edmond Halley's revolutionary hydrological world map. This principal map is accompanied by nine exquisitely engraved cartographic insets detailing harbours and islands, which might be especially important to any aspiring corsair who may wish to stalk Spanish treasure fleets in the region. These sites include Acapulco, the Gulf of Fonseca, the Galapagos Islands, Juan Fernando Island, the Panamanian Isthmus, the Straits of Magellan, Pepys's Island and a general overview of the trans-Atlantic Passage from England. Above the main section, are three large and highly detailed inset maps of the important harbours of Chiloe, Valdivia (both in Chile) and Guyaquil (Ecuador). As suggested in the very lower part of the map, in addition to Halley, Moll based most of his geography on the works of the Parisian royal cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle. The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, a New and Compleat Atlas . Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of great scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseat [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Sir Dudley Digges The Compleat Ambassador. It was at this time that there appeared in print a posthumouspublication by Sir Dudley Digges, late master of the rolls ( 1583-1639 ), 13entitled The Compleat Ambassador: or Two Treaties of the Intended Marriageof Qu. Elizabeth of Glorious Memory. In this work, the history of thenegotiations as to the Anjou and Alençon matches carried on duringWalsingham's embassy ( 1570-3, dates covering that of the massacre of St.Bartholomew ) became public property in the shape of the despatches ofWalsingham, and the replies of Burghley, Leicester and Sir Thomas Smith. Nosimilar revelation had hitherto taken place in England, where, notwithstanding the assiduous exertions of James I's diplomatists, verylittle attention had been paid to their activity by outsiders. But thepublisher, encouraged by the success of Cabala, 14 a curious medley ofletters and papers of the reigns of James and Charles I which appeared in1654, anticipated a great success for his experiment, and was not deceived. The time was propitious for a study of the diplomatic processes of the mostaggressively protestant of queen Elizabeth's ambassadors, whose policy ofsecuring the alliance of France against Spain was just about to experience arevival. Thus, the book, having rapidly gone into a second edition, was, indue course, translated into French, and came to be repeatedly cited inWicquefort's celebrated manual, L'Ambassadeur et ses Fonctions. histoire diplomatie [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Commentarius Literalis in Omnes Libros veteris et novi testamenti. In nine volumes

      - Dominici Marescandoli 1730 - An eighteenth-century commentary of all the books of the Old and New Testament in Latin. This is the first Latin translation of Calmet's work, by Giovanni Domenico Mansi . Features several folding maps and diagrams, head and tail pieces and capitals. Complete in eight volumes bound into nine. Antoine Augustin Calmet (26 February 1672 25 October 1757) was a French Benedictine. He was educated at the Benedictine priory of Breuil in Commercy, and in 1688 joined the same order in the abbey of St-Mansuy at Toul, where he was admitted to profession 23 October of the following year. After his ordination, 17 March 1696, he was appointed to teach philosophy and theology at Moyenmoutier Abbey. Here with the help of his brethren he began to gather the material for his commentary of the Bible, which was first published between 1707 and 1716. It was reprinted several times. The work inaugurated a new method of Biblical exegesis. Its author departed from the custom of giving an allegorical (mystical) and tropological (moral) interpretation besides the literal. The most valuable part of the commentary were the introductory prefaces to the several books and 114 learned dissertations on special topics. Calmet was a pious religious as well as a learned man, and one of the most distinguished members of the Congregation of St. Vanne. In recognition of these qualities he was elected prior of Lay-Saint-Christophe in 1715, abbot of St-Lopold at Nancy in 1718, and of Senones Abbey in 1729; he was also twice entrusted with the office of president or superior general of the congregation. Gian (Giovanni) Domenico Mansi (16 February 1692 27 September 1769) was an Italian theologian, scholar and historian, known for his massive works on the Church councils. His long career was filled chiefly with the re-editing of erudite ecclesiastical works with notes and complementary matter. His name appears on the title-pages of ninety folio volumes and numerous quartos. Condition: Rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally very good with just a little shelfwear and fading to the spines. Three hinges are strained but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound with just one or two leaves working loose. Many pages are remarkably bright for the age of this set, but there are intermittant instances of browning. All volumes have instances of damp staining:in some cases with just occasionalsmall marginal tidemarks, in others significantand some mould to lower margins ie in need of cleaning up. There are a few scattered spots and dusting to the textblock edges, occasionally affecting the margins. There are ink stamps of St Mary's Priory, London to all titles and some other pages. A fewsmall closed tears to some foldingplates. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
