[The World and Continents - Five Maps]

Augsburg, 1730. Copper-engraved maps, with full original colour, Worlld map with losses to bottom margin, and with re-enforcements to the top and bottom margins. Americas map has been re-backed along bottom margin and part of the right margin, trimmed close to or within platemark on right and left sides. Asia map water-stained near bottom of centerfold, and mild discoloration along centrefold, bottom margin is re-backed with repaired losses. Africa map has a water stain on the left sideborder and into the image of the map around the Cape Verde Islands, and at the bottom margin. Bottom margin is re-backed, with repaired minor losses and tears. Europe map expertly re-backed, repaired tears and minor losses to centerfold and on either side of the centerfold. Discoloration and fading in places. Superb maps of the World and the Continents by one of the great eighteenth-century German cartographers. George Matth?us Seutter learned the map publishing business as an apprentice to J. B. Homann of Nuremberg. In 1707, he moved to Augsburg where he established himself as Homann's main rival, becoming Geographer to the Imperial Court in 1715. Seutter copied many geographical details from his former prot?g?'s maps, and the rival houses duelled with each other in order to see which one could best epitomise the southern German Baroque ethic, with its lavish decorative embellishments and iconography of Roman Catholic piety. The World Map entitledDiversi Globi Terr-Aquei Statione Variante... exemplifies the new world view of the eighteenth-century. Although the familiar twenty-four Classical windheads still adorn the image, in place of the traditional allegorical scenes, the map is really a collection of "scientific" perspectives of Earth. Around the large hemispheres of the Old and New Worlds, there are polar views, "oblique" views, and perspectives illustrating the sphericality of the Earth. The Earth is no longer a mysterious object, but is now quantifiable, progressively subject to the empirical gaze of mankind. The map of North and South America, Novus Orbis sive America Meridionalis et Septentrionalis... , features resplendent examples of Seutter's cartouches. The title cartouche is inhabited by specimens of exotic birds, flying fish, and a native chief shaded by an umbrella. Surrounding a descriptive note about the New World, in the upper left, Europeans are seated at a table while natives kneel and deposit riches before a crucifix surmounted by the Virgin Mary with the cross, a chalice and a book. The map shows California as an island, at the same time featuring many coastal sites including San Clemente and Santa Barbara.Asia cum omnibus Imperiis, Provinciis, Statibus et Insulis. .. shows the continent during the zenith of both the Mughal and Chinese Empire, the latter prominently featuring The Great Wall. The cartouches feature Asian princes, a Chinese scholar with a cup of tea, an elephant, a lion and a pair of warriors. The note to the Reader in the upper right, is a homily on the ultimate importance of eternal and spiritual values over the evanescent values of temporal riches.Africa iuxta navigationes et observationes recentissimas aucta et in sua Regna et Status divisa.. . is beautifully decorated with a large, ornate cartouche by Gottfried Rogg that features natives, pyramids, and indigenous animals such as a leopard, a lion and a crocodile. Faithful to the period, the map is full of interesting geographical speculations, revealing that Europeans actually knew very little about the regions of Africa not immediately on the coasts or the banks of major rivers. Seutter allows the Ptolemaic myth that the Nile is fed by two large lakes to persist.Europa Religionis Christianæ, Morum et Pacis ac Belli Artium Cultu Omnium Terrarum Orbis Partium Præstantiss...is the title of the Europe map. The cartouche avows the claims of the title: "[Christian Europe in all the World the most Accomplished in the Ways of Peace and War and Cultivation of the Arts]", as a chain of cherubs descend from the Godhead along with the symbols of Catholicism. A queen at the left of the title represents good government, and below Athena and Apollo represent war and the arts. Tooley & Bricker, Landmarks of Mapmaking,p. 167-170.

An account of some strange apparitions had by a godly man* in Kintyre, who hath been blind six years: containing some visional predictions of several judgments to befal these three Kingdoms, particularly Scotland, and more especially some towns therein, as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Air, &c. With a reserve of mercy to God's people, and to the Church for their sake. In a letter from a Gentleman in Kintyre, to his Friend in Paisley

[Edinburgh?] Printed in the year MDCCXXX [1730]. 8vo., 8pp., the paper just a little soiled, bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt lettered 'Predictions'. A very good copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate> on front pastedown of Sir John Whitefoord Mackenzie.> First edition and of some rarity. (ESTC finds copies only at NLS + Cleveland Pub. Lib. + Huntington. A 3rd ed., with a somewhat different title, dated 1734, is recorded at UCLA, but not elsewhere and a 4th ed., also 1734, at Glasgow]. 'W.F.' addresses his Preface to 'Dear Friend'. 'I have a strange story of a close intimate of my own', he writes, 'who hath been blind six years, and who hath had many a day's communion with God in these days of his affliction, but of late hath had strange apparitions, which I wrote from his own mouth, and sent them to my own son in the parish of Paisley, to whom I wrote to give them to you; and when you have read them, send me your mind about them. I add no more at present .....'. It seems that John Potter saw apparitions in October, November, and December 1729, and again on 9th January and 20th January 1730. This latter episode involved a fleet of ships off Kintyre. 'It was told by a Voice, that the Isle betwixt Kintyre and Carrick should be as full of ships, as the trees in the wood; which should occasion much blood, both in the East and West of Scotland, particularly in the South of Carrick .....'.

(some full-page). later half calf (binding worn but solid, engraved plates with some minor staining, insignificant marginal worming). First Edition. An important account of Russia in the early eighteenth century, written by a Swedish officer who had been captured by the Russians at the battle of Poltava in 1709 and spent some time as a prisoner-of-war in Siberia. The author's name as a commoner was Philipp Johann Tabbert; he adopted the name von Strahlenberg in 1707 when he was ennobled for military merits. Together with the Prussian naturalist Messerschmidt, Strahlenberg explored the lower basins of the Obi and Yenesei river systems. His map of northern Asia, which was separately issued from the present work, "is the second most important source of historical-geographical information about Siberia [after Remezov]" (Bagrow). The account contains details respecting Russian history, geography, genealogy, archaeology, philology, military history, ethnology, &c., and a description of Atlasov's travel to the Anadyr. Also included are a table of thirty-two Tartar dialects and a Kalmuk vocabulary. Brunet V 558. Cox II 194. Graesse VI 508 (incorrect date). cfCrowther 2034. cfNerhood 72.         A Compleat History of the Ancient Amphitheatres. More peculiarly regarding the architecture of those buildings, and in particular that of Verona . made English . by Alexander Gordon.

      - London, for Harmen Noorthouck 1730. Octavo contemporary calf (spine worn, hinges cracked but holding); xvi,423pp, 15 engraved plates (9 folding). Occasional light browning, rather good. First English edition (a second appeared some five years later); from the Italian of 1728. Designed to be part of Maffei's Verona Illustrata (which followed later) particular point is made of the decision to publish in octavo rather than a 'pompous' folio - part of which is its purpose as a guide to be used on the spot. Also emphasized is Maffei's hands on approach, excavating and measuring himself. He gently censures (in 'a handsome manner') the errors of Lipsius and Fontana but much less gently reproves the 'destroyers of ancient monuments', exposing their names to 'the perpetual Reproach of Mankind'. Maffei's re-evaluation of the architecture and rewriting of the history of amphitheatres was generally well received but his discovery of the entablature of the Tuscan order in the amphitheatre at Verona sparked a sharp rebuke from at least one architect - Matteo Lucchese - who published a scornful reply to this book in 1730. While Maffei's desire to record and preserve was noble (and quite a new phenomenon) he couldn't help a little optimistic re-creation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

As also by the following Gardeners and Nursery-men: Robert Furber at Kensington, Philip Miller at the Physic Garden in Chelsea, Christopher Gray at Fulham &c

London: Printed in the Year MDCCXXX. 1730. First and only edition, royal folio, wide margin copy, [2], x, ix-xii, 90pp., with the additional title-page, frontispiece, engraved and etched, showing a gardener in apron with a gentleman and a lady viewing a formal garden, with heaped flowers and fruit in the foreground, all within a frame, 21 plates, cont. coloured by hand and mezzotints printed in colour, all after drawings by Jacob van Huysum, 7 mezzotints by Elisha Kirkall and 14 engravings by Henry Fletcher, all of trees and flowering plants, numbered in ink, title in both English and Latin, (plates 1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 14 & 16 mezzotint printed in colours, others engraved and coloured by hand), some occasional light damp-staining to text and plates, a couple closed tears to blank margins, final plate a little damaged with archival paper repairs to chipped blank margins, expertly rebound in blue boards with orig. wrappers laid-down onto covers, housed in a custom-made quarter morocco slip-case, marbled paper sides, spine gilt extra with contrasting red morocco title label lettered in gilt. "The 'Catalogus plantarum' is notable as one of the earliest flower books to contain plates printed in colours. It is perhaps unique in that one third of its plates are so printed, in mezzotint from a single plate, while two thirds are engraved and hand-coloured in the usual way... The seven 'mezzotints' are printed mainly in green and brown, with some small use of a third or fourth colour. Presumably all this was done through dabbing the colours on a single plate; but it should still be noted that Kirkall, the engraver, had previously experimented with woodblocks for laying on the second and third colours..."—Hunt. "An important work as it is one of the first attempts to establish a nomenclature, and so dispel the confusion which arose from plants having several different names. Eighty-eight American trees and shrubs are listed among those which the London nursery-men could supply in 1730. Three volumes were planned for this work but only the first of Trees and Shrubs were completed, it includes the plates which would have illustrated the volumes on Greenhouse Plates and Flowers had they been issued."—Dunthorne.

Fine. Chez André Cailleau, à Paris 1730, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. Pet. in 8 (9x17cm), relié. - New edition. The first volume of these observations appeared in 1719, the second component later in 1725 In this edition, Volume I is 1730 and the second from 1737 will be noted that it is very rare to find the two volumes together, d even more uniform binding Full Sheepskin contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title morocco beige and volume number in red morocco. Caps threadbare. Scuffs on the boards. Despite the shortcomings reported, agreeable copies, well connected. Moving, famous Jesuit scholar is the author of this compilation quii borrows articles to contemporaryicals such as the Journal of the learned, the Republlique letters, and other less known. The result is a more representative view of scientific knowledge. Physical naturally understood in the broad sense, can be found, apart from general physics (acoustics, optics ...) chapters on chemistry, anatomy, plants and natural science, astronomy. The choice of the father Bougeant turns bold and exciting autograph dedication of the authors are quite short and maintain curiosity, going from strange and extraordinary subject to other more conventional, as the causes of the storm. Both volumes have the same thematic division (General Physics, Chemistry, Botany ...) themes together a large number of articles on various subjects. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

A brief state of the inland or home trade, of England; and of the oppressions it suffers, and the dangers which threaten it from invasion of hawkers, pedlars, and clandestine traders of all sorts. Humbly represented to the present Parliament

London: printed for Tho. Warner, at the Black-Boy in Pater-noster-Row. 1730. 8vo., 70pp., bound in later plain cream boards with a printed paper label on spine. A very good crisp copy. First edition. Moore (Defoe>) 512. Furbank & Owens 249P. Goldsmiths 6764. Kress 3850. Hanson 4074. 'A pamphlet addressed to Parliament, being 'the humble Complaint of the chief Trading Part of the whole Kingdom, against a Sort of People, who ... are ... become an heavy Oppression' (p.[4]). It explains the beneficent operation of the circulation of trade and calls for legal action against the hawkers and pedlars who impede it. The latter, it says, should be made to settle and to open shops like the rest of the trading fraternity. The Political State> for March 1730, p.315, speaks of it as 'a Book which the Shopkeepers published on this Occasion' and says: 'As this Book tho' Printed, has not been publickly Sold, it may not have fallen into many Hands'. [F. & O. p.241]. The attribution to Defoe by Moore and other commentators is not absolutely confirmed by Furbank & Owens. Moore suggests that the essay can be dated between 18 February 1730 and sometime before the middle of April. But whoever the author, the essay paints a vivid portrait of the retail trade in the second quarter of the 18th century. It is a picture of a thriving black-market, of fences, smugglers and a host of 'unregulated' traders selling cheap and poor quality goods at grossly inflated prices. Honest shopkeepers were being cheated left, right and centre.

A Besançon: Chez Jean-Baptiste Charmet, 1730. Fine. Chez Jean-Baptiste Charmet, A Besançon 1730 - 1735, In 4 (18x24,5cm), (2) xxvj 298pp. xvj 179pp. (1bc) (22) cxij et (4) xix (1) 635pp. (1bc.) (21), relié. - Rare first edition of the two volumes published respectively in 1730 and 1735 make up the history of the county of Burgundy. A third volume, published in 1740, which is rarely met the first two deals with the nobility and the counts of Burgundy and its political organization. Both volumes are illustrated with 11 plates, including a map of Besançon, a panoramic map brochure of the same city, a folding map of Besançon séquanoises provinces ... The history of the church has a half-title with a new paging. It is possible that there was a false title before the title page entitled History of the County of Burgundy, half-title found on the second volume, but nothing is certain. Binding in full mottled calf time. Back finely and richly decorated nerves, especially iron to the crown of France repeated in each box and the room volume number. Roulette tail leaping horse. Part of title and volume number morocco beige with foliage framing the volume number. Head cover of Volume I partly broken. Small accidents tail of Volume I. partly head cover threadbare in Volume II, fragile tail accidents (lower jaw open tail). A corner wearing a lack of leather trim. The folding board a Roman triumphal arch carries a tear and a former track brown scotch. Despite the many cited defects, copy looks good, the highly decorative back and also costs much. The Séquanois were the ancient people of Franche-Comté, and perhaps part of Switzerland (it was bounded on the north by the Vosges), it was probably a large province, one of the most powerful in Gaul, the Burgundians settled there around the fifth century, a county of Burgundy was born at X century. A chapter is devoted to the history of the Church of Besançon and its main abbeys. The second volume deals with the history of the county of Burgundy, until the advent of the first dukes, and the history of the kingdom of Burgundy (intertwined with the history of the Frankish dynasty). This excellent history of Burgundy is distinguished not only by his erudition but also by the clarity of his style and of its development, it redoubles any previously written history as its starting assumptions are individuals.

A Catalogue of Trees, Shrubs, Plants, and Flowers, both Exotic and Domestic, which are propagated for Sale, in the Gardens near London... by a Society of Gardeners. Catalogus, Arborum, Fruiticumque, &c. or, a Catalogue of Trees and Shrubs, both Exotic and Domestic, which are Hardy enough to bear the Cold of our Climate in the Open Air. Ranged in an Alphabetical Order, according to their most approved Latin Names. With an Index of the English Names referring to the Latin. Part I [all published]. London: Printed for the Society of Gardeners, And are to be sold by the said Society at Newhall's Coffee-house, in Chelsea, near London... As also by the following Gardeners and Nursery-men: Robert Furber at Kensington, Philip Miller at the Physic Garden in Chelsea, Christopher Gray at Fulham &c

London: Printed in the Year MDCCXXX. [1730]. First and only edition, royal folio, wide margin copy, [2], x, ix-xii, 90pp., with the additional title-page, frontispiece, engraved and etched, showing a gardener in apron with a gentleman and a lady viewing a formal garden, with heaped flowers and fruit in the foreground, all within a frame, 21 plates, cont. coloured by hand and mezzotints printed in colour, all after drawings by Jacob van Huysum, 7 mezzotints by Elisha Kirkall and 14 engravings by Henry Fletcher, all of trees and flowering plants, numbered in ink, title in both English and Latin, (plates 1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 14 & 16 mezzotint printed in colours, others engraved and coloured by hand), some occasional light damp-staining to text and plates, a couple closed tears to blank margins, final plate a little damaged with archival paper repairs to chipped blank margins, expertly rebound in blue boards with orig. wrappers laid-down onto covers.

Fine. Chez Pierre Prault, à Paris 1730, 3 tomes en 3 Vol. in-12 (9,2x15,7cm), (6) 414pp. (6) et (10) 410pp; et (12) 376pp., relié. - New edition, rare, illustrated with 20 figures, 18 per Bucaille (only some are signed) and two stuffed with Marillier on strong, and captioned in a frame (they surely learned Cabinet fairies, an etchings bearing the indication: Volume 21). Reprint of the first edition of 1723 Full blond glazed calf eighteenth, slightly later. Smooth spine decorated. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in morocco beige. Triple Net framework on boards. Gilt edges. Caps head tomes II and III threadbare, same tail of Volume I. Lovely copy. Gueulette was a famous storyteller, and rightly so, his works were stored next to the Arabian Nights. Although this writing is the main entertainment purpose, like their model shows that it takes the form: The Thousand and One Nights, the work boasts a didacticism, including Tatars and their manners, evidenced by the notes. Tartary Central Asia was occupied by Turkish-Mongol peoples, there distinguished Chinese Tartary, Russian Tartary, and Independent Tartary. Dr. Abukeler must find a cure for blindness of the king, until his return the doctor's son should tell a story every day for a quarter of an hour the king or be killed. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

The Scripture Chronology Demonstrated by Astronomical Calculations: and also by the Year of Jubilee, and the Sabbatical Year among the Jews: or, An Account of Time from the Creation of the World, to the Destruction of Jerusalem. Illustrated with a Great Variety of Tables, Maps, and Copper Plates. By Arthur Bedford, M.A. Rector of Newton St. Loe in the County of Somerset, and Chaplain to the Haberdashers-Hospital at Hoxton near London.

London: Printed for James and John Knapton etc., 1730. - Folio pp. Title, [2 list of subscribers], vi, [2], 774, [44], [4 index], [17 index and errata], [1 ads.]. Full 18th Century calf, rebacked and recornered with original spine laid on, gilt rule and blindstamping to boards and gilt rules, raised bands and title label to spine. Edges speckled red and plain endpapers. Title in red and black, woodcut head and tail-pieces, 18 (7 folding) plates of maps and plans of Solomon's Temple, and furthe illustations in the text. Some rubbing and wear to binding, internally very clean and fresh, with a good impression of the plates. Robert Raymond, 1st Baron Raymond's (1673–1733) copy, with his name and date of aquisition in ink to first blank. Small closed tear towards the middle of the last folding plate, within the image, but not particularly visible. Bedford wrote his chronology as an improved version (using more recently discovered astronomical findings) of Bishop Usher's famous work and also as a refutation of Isaac Newton's Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms; a very similar work which also deals in detail with Solomon's Temple, estimates and plans of which Bedford disagreed with. A fine example of Eighteenth Century printing and engraving. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
