A Panegyric on the Reverend D--n S----t. In Answer to the Libel on Dr. D--y, and a Certain Great L--d

[s.n.], [Dublin] 1729 - First edition. Woodcut headpiece. 8 pp. 12mo. 'For Gulliver divinely shews, / That Humankind are all Yahoos'. Rare copy of an anti-Swift satire variously attributed to the minor Irish poet James Arbuckle and Swift himself. The poem, which paints Swift's misanthropy as a form of self-regard, was one of a series of "libels" in response to a poetical address to Lord Carteret by Swift's friend, Patrick Delany. The poem was attributed to Swift by Ball in his edition of the correspondence on evidence gleaned from the letters; in an October 1730 letter to Lord Bathurst, Swift referred to "all the libels that have been writ against me ? and among the rest a very scrub one in verses lately written by myself." Faulkner's 1768 edition of Swift's works attributed the poem to Arbuckle. The case for Arbuckle's authorship has been more recently made by James Woolley ("Arbuckle's 'Panegyric' and Swift's Scrub Libel: The Documentary Evidence," in Contemporary Studies of Swift's Poetry, University of Delaware Press, 1981, pp. 191-209), who gathers evidence from a bound collection of Arbuckle's printed and manuscript poems - including a corrected copy of the 1730 London edition of "A Panegyric" - in the National Library of Wales: "In effect, this volume stands as his tacit claim to have written the poem, a claim the more persuasive because it is unlikely to have been made to deceive" (p. 201).

Its peculiar force is difficult to convey; authorities as different as Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and George Whitefield spoke enthusiastically of it. Samuel Johnson attributed to it his first earnest attention to religion. But the most significant testimony is that of John Wesley, who reaped where Law had sown. Writing after they had parted company, he said: 'it will hardly be excelled, if it be equalled, in the English language, either for beauty of expression or for justice and depth of thought'" (PMM). Johnson would use approximately 200 or so quotations from A Serious Call in the revised fourth edition of his Dictionary (1773).

St. Petersburg: Gedruckt bey der Kayserlichen Acadeie der Wissenschafften, 1729. Folio (29.5 × 19.5 cm). Folded leaves; paper spine strip; 12 pp. Bilingual title and text in Russian and German in facing columns. Lacking one leaf (pp. 5-6); slightly resized; small paper repairs; moisture stains. First and only printing of a treaty signed between Russia and Persia in February 1729, at Rasht, which was the first agreement "to deal with the sovereignty issues of the Caspian" (Troubled Waters: the Geopolitics of the Caspian, 20). The treaty marks the inability of Russia to retain the rapid conquests made in Persia under Peter the Great. After his death in 1725, a number of treaties regulated the return of territories and the resolution of existing conflicts. In the present treaty, the Russians returned territories in exchange for the mutual right to navigate the region. The treaty was quickly invalidated, however, when the Afghan ruler of Persia, Ashraf Hotak, was overthrown by Nader Shah, who went on to rule as Shah of Persia. No auction records located.         Antique Print-MALTA-APOSTLE PAUL-ST.PAUL'S BAY-B/W-De Putter-Calmet-1729

      - Antique print, titled: 'D'oude Schets van het Eyland Malta, alwaer, Paulus na zyn Schipbreuk Aenlandde.' - This is an uncommon bird's-eye view map of the island of Malta. The map presents a contemporary view of the island, but also illustrates Apostle Paul's shipwreck on the island in the year 60 AD. According to the legend this shipwreck took place at St. Paul's Bay, which is shown here at lower right; the map is oriented with north in the lower right corner. Saint Paul stayed in Malta for three months and performed a number of miracles, like the healing of the father of Publius, the Roman governor. Engraved by A. de Putter. Engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Augustin Calmet' after an anonymous artist. Antoine Augustin Calmet (February 26, 1672 - October 25, 1757) was a French Benedictine monk and Biblical scholar active in the late 17th and early 18th century. Calmut was born at Ménil-la-Horgne in Lorraine. He joined the Abbey of St-Mansuy at Toul in 1688. Approximately ten years later he was assigned to teach philosophy and theology in Moyenmoutier Abby. There he gathered the various materials and commentary with which he would eventually compose his important theological studies. Calmet's work initiated a new era of Biblical exegesis in which the dominant allegorical approach to theological analysis was replaced with a critical search for meaning and significance. Calmet was a religious as well as a learned man, and one of the most distinguished members of the Congregation of St. Vanne. In recognition of these qualities he was elected prior of Lay-Saint-Christophe in 1715, abbot of St-Léopold at Nancy in 1718, and of Senones Abbey in 1729; he was also twice entrusted with the office of president or superior general of the congregation. Pope Benedict XIII wished to confer Episcopal Dignity upon him, but in his humility could not be brought to accept the honor. Among Calmet's more interesting works is a 1746 treatise that ambiguously, though not explicitly, considers the existence of Vampires. Calmet died at Senones Abbey, near Saint-Dié, on 25 October 1757. Condition: Good, given age. Edges browned. Light soiling in the margins. A few minor crinkles. Original middle fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 17.9 x 14.4 inch. The image size is ca. 17.1 x 12 inch. The overall size is ca. 45.5 x 36.5 cm. The image size is ca. 43.5 x 30.5 cm.

A Panegyric on the Reverend D--n S----t. In Answer to the Libel on Dr. D--y, and a Certain Great L--d

[Dublin]: [s.n.], 1729. First edition. Woodcut headpiece. 8 pp. 12mo. Disbound. First edition. Woodcut headpiece. 8 pp. The poem was attributed to Swift by Ball in his edition of the correspondence on evidence gleaned from the letters; in an October 1730 letter to Lord Bathurst, Swift referred to "all the libels that have been writ against me … and among the rest a very scrub one in verses lately written by myself." Faulkner's 1768 edition of Swift's works attributed the poem to Arbuckle. 201).

Modern, old style binding, half calf leather. Else a good copy with an ownership mark on the titlepage (‘Joseph Basler [or Basbe?]’). With an engraved frontispiece showing three scenes from jewish life and a small engraving on the titlepage by I.M. Eben. 8°: A-Z 8, pag.: 368. The filosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) was the spiritual leader of the German Jewry during the Enlightenment. He wrote many philosophical treatises and is considered the father of the Jewish Enlightenment. Thus he became the symbol of progressive Judaism to the Christian world. At the height of his career, in 1769, Mendelssohn was publicly challenged by a Christian apologist, a Zurich pastor named John Lavater, to defend the superiority of Judaism over Christianity. The letters forming his reply - published in German in 1770 and translated for the present rare French edition - neither attacked Christianity nor defended Judaism; they maintained instead that such polemics were inconsistent with Judaism and unbecoming of Jews. The controversy, which disturbed Mendelssohn greatly, forced him to recognize that his Judaism created a barrier between himself and his enlightened colleagues. Mendelssohn wanted to take the Jews out of a ghetto lifestyle and into secular society. He tried to improve the relationship between Jews and Christians as he argued for tolerance and humanity.         The dunciad, variorum. With the prolegomena of Scriblerus [Large Paper?]

London: Printed for A. Dod, 1729. First Edition thus. 4to: 16,[2],6,9-29,[3],118,cxix-cxxiv,[2]pp, with engraved title page showing an ass chewing thistles and laden with books, an owl perched on top (No. 1 of four versions of the image) and head-pieces and woodcut tail-pieces. (Pagination of the "Prolegomena" omits pages 7 and 8, as always, but text is continuous.) Not to be confused with the reissue of the 1729 edition printed by John Wright for A. Dod, with an added leaf at end, headed "Addenda. M. Scriblerus lectori" (ESTC Citation No. T5544; as Foxon cautions: since the reissue differs "only in lacking the leaf of addenda, copies may be easily sophisticated." In our copy, X3 and X4 are conjugate, as are the following two blank leaves.). Contemporary mottled English calf, spine (very skillfully relaid) in six compartments very richly gilt between raised bands; covers, with gilt French fillet, stamped in blind with decorative roll; reddish-brown morocco letter-piece gilt, board edges gilt, leaf edges speckled red. A gorgeous wide-margined copy (Large Paper, according to Lowndes), in a Fine period binding, pages and engravings pristine (excepting end papers and blanks, which are foxed). ESTC T5545. Griffith (Pope) 211 (calling our copy variant a) and p. 162. Foxon P771. Vander Meulen (Engelhard Lecture), p. 5. Wise (Pope Library). Lowndes IV, 1917 ("The author's first avowed edition."). Pope's literary landmark, published in four major versions and in five dozen editions, impressions, and issues between 1728 and 1751, making it something of a bibliographic quagmire. The poem celebrates a goddess, Dulness, and the progress of her agents as they bring decay, imbecility, and tastelessness to the Kingdom of Great Britain. Pope first published The Dunciad in 1728, in three books. The poem was not signed, and he used only initials in the text to refer to the various Dunces in the kingdom of Dulness. However, "keys" immediately came out to identify the persons mentioned in the text, and an Irish pirate edition was printed that filled in the names (sometimes inaccurately). "In the spring of 1729, the 'War of the Dunces' entered a new phase with the publication of the enlarged Dunciad [our copy]. Though the text of the poem was not greatly changed relatively, the size of the book was quadrupled by the edition of a prolegomena, a mass of foot-notes and appendices in which Pope made his attack upon his antagonists more direct and more pungent." (Griffith) In this, the Dunciad Variorum of 1729, Pope called the version of 1728 "surreptitious," claiming that there had been five different forms of that "imperfect" version and baffling bibliographers to this day.       - Woodcut arms of Le Blanc on title. xvi, 310 pp. (lacking the 19-leaf index). 8vo, cont. calf (headcap a bit defective), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin, 1729. The very rare sale catalogue of the library of Le Blanc (1669-1728), who held many positions in the defense ministry of France, finally serving from 1726 until his death as chief defense minister. As befitting an "homme d'état, " this was a library rich in French history, histories of other countries, and biographies. 3328 lots; the final 130 lots are MSS., mostly historical and legal. As is often the case, without the 19-leaf index at end. This catalogue was published by Martin while the sale of the vast Colbertina was in progress. The disposal of the books singly at marked prices - à l'amiable et en detail as stated on the title - was no doubt so slow that Martin decided to sell them by auction - à l'encan - the dates of which were announced by handbills (one of these has survived). Fine copy. Ownership inscription on title: "Ex Musaeo du Tilliot Anno 1729." On the free front endpaper, Du Tilliot has provided a brief biographical sketch of Le Blanc and an account of the library. ? Bléchet, pp. 80-81. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions?1643-1830, 29. Peignot, p. 81. It is interesting to note that Ehrman, who made a considerable effort in acquiring Gabriel Martin's catalogues, did not own this one. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
