Histoire Naturelle, Civile et Ecclesiastique de L'Empire du Japon:

The Hague: Chez P. Gosse, & J. Neaulme,, 1729. Composeé en Allemand … 2 volumes folio (353 × 230 mm). Late 19th-century calf-backed boards, red and green morocco contrast labels, edges sprinkled red, marbled endpapers. With engraved allegorical title to volume I, title pages printed in red and black, 45 engraved plates, maps and plans, all but 2 folding or double-page, one of them a large folding general map of Japan, engraved arms to the dedication leaf, cul-de-lampes. From the Château Dampierre library of the ducs de Luynes, bookplate to verso of the front free endpaper, and contemporary inked collation verso of the first publisher's blank in volume I. Spines a little sunned, a few minor repairs, some browning throughout as usual, particularly at the inner margin of volume I, one plate rather heavily browned, but overall a very good copy. First edition in French published two years after the first edition which was published in English. In his lifetime Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) published nothing of his travels in the Far East; it was not until his natural history collection and literary remains were purchased by Sir Hans Sloane in 1723–5 that this account, written shortly before his death, was translated into English by Johann Gaspar Scheuzer and prepared for publication. Thereafter this encyclopaedic description of Japanese flora and fauna, religion and customs, government and industries remained "the chief source of Western knowledge of Japan" (Landwehr) for over a century, being translated into all major languages and reprinted on numerous occasions. Born in Westphalia, Kaempfer graduated in 1676 with a doctorate in languages, history and medicine from Cracow, spending the following four years at Königsberg studying medicine and natural science. In 1681 he moved to Upsala and two years later was chosen to accompany Ludwig Fabritius's embassy from Charles XII to Russia and Persia. At Esfahan Kaempfer decided not to return with the rest of the party, but instead obtained employment with the Dutch East India Company and headed south for Bandar Abbas, where for two years he was surgeon at the Dutch factory. In 1688 he set sail for the east passing through Muscat, the Malabar and Coromandel coasts, Cochin, and Quilon, arriving in Batavia in October 1689, "After spending the winter studying the natural history of Java he took a vessel to Japan as physician to the Dutch trading factory there. En route the vessel called at the Dutch factory in Siam, where Kaempfer visited Ayuthaya and Bangkok. On 24.9.90 he arrived at the Dutch factory of Deshima in Nagasaki, Japan, the only Japanese port at that time open to foreign trade" (Howgego). In 1691 he set out with the head of the factory on his first journey to the imperial court at Edo, receiving an audience with Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. He made a second similar trip in 1692 before leaving Japan and returning to Batavia, eventually sailing for Europe some time in 1693. "His adroitness, insinuating manners and medical skill overcame the habitual jealousy and reticence of the natives, and enabled him to elicit much valuable information" (Ency. Brit.) By 1695 he had established himself as a physician in his home town of Lemgo where he remained until his death in 1716.

Les voyages de Glantzby dans les mers orientales de la Tartarie : avec les Avantures (sic) surprenantes des Rois Loriman & Osmundar, Princes Orientaux ; traduits de l'Original Danois ; et la carte de ce payis (sic)

Theodore Le Gras, Paris 1729 - 12mo (6 3/4 x 4"). [4], 349, [3]pp. Original full calf, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Decorative head-, tailpiece and initial. Folded frontispiece map.First edition of an imaginary voyage to the Orient, purporting to be a translation from the Danish. Long recognized as one of the earliest imitations of Swift, most critics have also recognized this as one of the better attempts in the genre. Glantzby, the narrator, embarks at the Cape of Good Hope on a 'friendly nation' ship to explore 'a new continent beyond Japan.' After suffering several Japanese attacks off Japan, the officers and sailors of the ship have decided to become pirates and to sail the 'seas of America.' Glantzby disagreeing, he is disembarked on a deserted island. Some time later, three men arrive, who offer to take him to the lands of the Empire of Norre. In the village where he lives, Glantzby witnesses a human sacrifice: a man is fed to a giant snake. He kills the snake with his rifle, and frees the man. From then on, the narrator is respected as a living god. The villagers have a peculiarity: they are mute. This rare first edition is complete with its engraved folded frontispiece map of the imaginary empire of Norre and kingdom of Arrimond.Minor rubbing. Ex-library copy with bookplate on inside of front cover and stamps on title page. Offsetting to endpapers. Text in French. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.         The works of Edmund Waller Esqr. in verse and prose published by Mr. Fenton

London: printed for I. Tonson in Ye Strand, MDCCXXIX [1729]. First Edition. Full Calf. Near Fine+. Large 4to: [18],450,xci,[1]pp, with engraved title page, four full-page copper-engraved plates (including frontispiece portrait of Waller engraved by Vertu after Kneller), and numerous superb head- and tailpieces and historiated initials. Contemporary cambridge-style calf, sides decorated in blind and framed with rat's tooth roll, ribbed spine richly gilt in seven compartments, red morocco lettering piece gilt (chipped), plain period end papers. Near Fine or better, with light offsetting, sporadic foxing and the odd smudge, else clean and crisp throughout; joints very skillfully repaired, spine ends renewed. Provenance: signature of the bibliophile Douglas Grant in pencil to front fly leaf. Wither to Prior 941. Grolier English 100, 27. First Collected Edition, the "most sumptuous ever published. It contains all the poems which had hitherto appeared, to which the editor has added four new . . . Waller's letter are added for the first time and the various prefaces to the earlier editions are reprinted. Finally, the information given in the notes is so full and accurate that little has been left to the research or correction of later editions." (Wither to Prior) Waller's poems were widely read during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. "Dryden, who greatly admired Waller and consistently treated him as mentor and precursor, claimed that ‘the well-placing of words, for the sweetness of pronunciation, was not known till Mr. Waller introduced it.' . . . When neo-classical canons of correctness fell out of fashion in the nineteenth century, Waller's poetic reputation plummeted, and it has never fully recovered, [though] . . . renewed interest in court culture and in the intersection of literature and history toward the end of the twentieth century has led to a modest Waller revival."         De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciae Rege Gestis commentariorum libri septem. Elegantissimis Tabulis aeneis exornati cum triplici Indice. (2 Parts).

Nürnberg, Christopher Riegel, 1729. Folio. (38x25 cm.). Bound in two unifrom later half vellum with handwritten titles and line bands on spine, all in black ink. Bound partly uncut. Half-title, (8), 362, (363-367), 368-626 pp. + Tractatus Praecipui 53 pp. + Index (9) pp. + Informatio pro Bibliopegis &c (2) pp. Engraved allegorical frontispiece (by Jean Boulanger after D.K. Ehrenstrahl). 12 engraved portraits and 115 fine engraved plates (numbered up to 112, some numbers omitted, some unnumbered, some double-numb - COMPLETE). Plates are double-page, but some of the plates folded three times and made from more than one copperplate; the plate with the view of Stockholm, showing the procession of the funeral of Carl X Gustav, is printed from 13 plates and is 450 cm. long. One plate (Expeditio Gloriosa... qua Mare Balticum) shaved in left and right margins, loosing part of the printed frame. Many engraved vignettes, coins and medals in the text. Although the binding is rather new, it is the copy's first binding, thus the first and last few leaves in both volumes have some brownspots and some soiling, otherwise rather clean with some scattered brownspots, mainly to margins. A few corners with minor repairs (no loss). 7 plates in part I having a wormtract in upper right corners, not affecting the engravings. Scarce second Latin edition - the first published 1696 - having the same plates as the first, of this magnificent and profusely illustrated work on the Swedish Wars, which also appeared in translations into German and French. The writing of this official history of the Swedish Wars with Poland and Denmark from 1655 to 1660 was entrusted by King Charles XI to Samuel Pufendorf, the famous and important German jurist, political philosopher, economist, statesman and historian, who was made a baron in 1694, shortly before he died. Pufendorf played a decisive role in the development of the philosophy of law and political history. His famous work on the Swedish Wars is also famed for its impressive and excellent illustrations, - not least the 450 cm. long procession-plate. To illustrate the history of the Swedish Wars, use was made of the original drawings by Erik Dahlberg, the Quarter-Master general of the Swedish Army, who was an eye-witness. The drawings were engraved by the same artists that Dahlbergh employed in Paris and later in Sweden for his "Suecia Antiqua", e.g. Boulanger, Cochin, Jean le Pautre, Perelle etc. etc. They includes views from Poland, Denmark, Germany and Norway. It is easy to trace the influence of Callot, as well as of Rubens in these splendid Cavalry scenes. Swedish Books No 38 - Warmholtz: 4840 (1696-edition).

Polly: An Opera Being the Second Part of the Beggar's Opera

London: Printed for the Author, 1729, 1729. First edition. NCBEL II, 498. Binding a bit worn and stained; some light damp-stains in the text; a very good, large copy.. 4to, contemporary quarter calf, marbled paper boards, red leather label, gilt rules and lettering. 31 pages of engraved sheet music. The sequel to John Gay's popular Beggar's Opera (1728), but in Polly the characters have moved from the streets and highways of England to the West Indies, a setting Gay uses to ridicule fortune-hunting colonialists and the English colonial system. Polly was sufficiently offensive to the powers-that-be that Lord Chamberlain declared it libelous and banned it from being rehearsed, which Gay writes about in his four-page preface. This is followed by a clever three-page introduction on the nature of sequels written in the form of a dialogue between a poet and actor. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Henry Streatfield on the front paste-down, father of the legendary beauty Sophia Streatfield (1755-1835). The Streatfield library was later sold by W. H. Robinson Ltd. On the front free endpaper is the bookplate of American collector Charles Walker Andrews, who has noted in pencil above the bookplate that he purchased this from Robinson in 1935.

Not in BL London, BN Paris - "Although passed over by the majority if the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. On the theoretical plane, La Hire's treatise was already out of date at the time of its appearance because it ignored Newton's laws of dynamics... on the other hand... he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion following Desargues, of adopting an epicycloidal for gear wheels" (DSB)..

        Emmenologia

London: T. Cox, 1729. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Very interesting engraved printer's device on title. Full calf with simple blind stamped design and double gilt rules, somewhat worn; interior very clean and crisp, with only the occasional stain. Library stamp on paste-down, title, and final page. With the bookplate of Arnold Thackray, now loose. First edition in English of the first text on menstruation which appeared during the eighteenth century. This was the author's first book, originally published in Latin in 1703. Freind believed menstruation resulted from a plethora of the body, and because of erect posture the blood escaped via the uterus and vagina. Though his views on menstruation were not very popular, he provided some significant medical insight into the subject, such as proving by a calculation that the amount of blood passing through the umbilical cord would be sufficient for the needs of an embryo. Freind (1675-1728) was the first English medical historian. He was committed to the Tower, where he plotted in detail his History of Physick (1725-26), still considered a classic.

Buon esempl. (strappo p. 77 con parziale perdita di testo).

Overall a nice, crisp copy. A scarce title in a pleasing contemporary binding, this copy bearing several distinct Ottoman ownership seals yet with little real sign of wear. First edition in Turkish (printed with Arabic types) of this eyewitness account of the Afghan invasion of Persia in 1722 by Father Judasz Thaddeus Krusinksi (1675–1756), First published in French as Histoire de la dernière révolution de Perse in Paris, 1728. Krusinski, "the best known of the Polish Jesuits active in Iran" in the early 18th century, lived in Isfahan from 1707 to 1728 and again in the 1740s, serving as court translator, ambassador of French kings Louis XIV and XV, and intermediary between the Safavids and the Papacy (Encyclopaedia Iranica). The Afghan invasion saw the Safavid ruler Shah Sultan Husayn executed and the capital Isfahan sacked, precipitating the eventual downfall of the once-great empire in 1736 following a brief period of Safavid reconquest. Originally composed in Latin, Tarih-i seyyah was translated into Turkish by the Ottoman diplomat Ibrahim Müteferrika and became only the third text to be printed on his new printing press, the first press established under Muslim auspices. Following a long struggle against conservative religious sentiment, Müteferrika was finally granted permission for his project by Sultan Ahmet III in 1729. The first book printed was Kitab-i Lügat-i Vankulu, an Arabic–Persian–Turkish dictionary based on the Sihah of al-Jawhari, with the second being Katib Çelebi's Tühfet ül-kibar fi esfar il-bihar (Concerning Naval Expeditions), followed by the present title in the same year. The press was discontinued in 1742, with the consequence that any such "Turkish incunabula" are uncommon. Burrell 165 for the first edition and 448 for the first in English. Not in Blackmer or Atabey. [Attributes: First Edition]

Parallel German title: Tractat, zwischen dem Russischen Reich und dem Sultan Eschref, Jetzigem Besitzer des Persischen Thrones zu Ispahan. Von russischer Seite ertheilet

Folded leaves; paper spine strip; 12 pp. Bilingual title and text in Russian and German in facing columns. Lacking one leaf (pp. 5-6); slightly resized; small paper repairs; moisture stains. First and only printing of a treaty signed between Russia and Persia in February 1729, at Rasht, which was the first agreement "to deal with the sovereignty issues of the Caspian" (Troubled Waters: the Geopolitics of the Caspian, 20). The treaty marks the inability of Russia to retain the rapid conquests made in Persia under Peter the Great. After his death in 1725, a number of treaties regulated the return of territories and the resolution of existing conflicts. In the present treaty, the Russians returned territories in exchange for the mutual right to navigate the region. The treaty was quickly invalidated, however, when the Afghan ruler of Persia, Ashraf Hotak, was overthrown by Nader Shah, who went on to rule as Shah of Persia. No auction records located. Not in the Fekula Collection. Bitovt 566. KVK, OCLC show the copies at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Göttingen, and Strasbourg. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
