La Fontaine, Jean de
Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1728. Complete in 5 parts (various paginations) with frontispiece and 242 half-page engravings by Henri Cause, many based on those of François Chauveau. The 5th part of the Fables is not included in many editions; so this more complete edition is quite desirable. Internally clean with only an occasional hint of foxing; small chips out of margins of 5 leaves, not affecting text or images. In all, a very nice example of this scarce book, an early, delightfully illustrated French-language presentation of La Fontaine's fables.. Early Printing. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Jacques Estienne, Francois Babuty
France: Jacques Estienne Francois Babuty. Our Blue Ridge Home Welcomes you And thanks you for stopping by Description Antique book Explication Du Mystere De La Passion De Notre-Seigneur Jesus-Christ - The Passion of Christ. Book is dated 1728 (in Roman numerals), was published by Chez Jacques Estienne with Francois Babuty. It has some writing inside the front cover, written most likely with a quill pen and ink. I cannot really make out the words, but it looks like "celis re aparticut amorie cenaro de laurel" - on the opposite page there is a name which looks very much like Auguste Renard or Renoir and if it is, this book is worth WAY more than my asking price. However, I cannot attest to the name, it could be any Auguste of the period. I have shown you a photo of the signature. The book is written entirely in French. Printed on the first inside page, along with the name and authors names are the words "Suivant la Concorde. Premiere Partie" and other words. I am fairly certain the cover is sheepskin, given the date of the book. I have never been able to find another book like this, not even on the site that sells books by Jacques Estienne. You can find Part Two, but this is Part One. My opinion is that not only is this book rare, but it is scarce and possibly the only one or one of only a few remaining in existence. It shows the age, by the yellowing of the pages and wear to the cover and there are stains as well. However, given the fact that this book is almost 300 years old, I would say it has held up rather well. On the side of the binding is printed "Jesus Crvcif" in gol … [Click Below for Full Description]

PICART (Bernard) ; BERNARD (Jean Frédéric)
voir descriptif. [Click Below for Full Description]

Heirs of Hippocrates [324 (ed. 1714) : "With the intention of publishing an anatomical text, Eustachi had completed the drawings for his work and the plates had been engraved by 1552. The text, however, was never completed and Eustachi's notes to the plates were lost except for the eight which had been published in his lifetime. The plates were inherited by Eustachi's assistant and were eventually deposited in the Vatican Library, where they were uncovered a century and a half later and published by the papal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi (see No. 687 ff.), who added his elucidations and included the previously published eight plates with Eustachi's commentary. [Pope, Alexander]
[London]: Dublin, Printed, London Reprinted for A. Dodd, 1728. First edition. Engraved frontispiece (Griffith Variety 1 with "Dunci-" on second line of pendant). viii, [ii], 51, [1] pp. Collation: A-E^6 F^2. 12mo. The distinguished Hagen-Pforzheimer-Slater copy of the first edition of Pope's satirical masterpiece, a mock-epic reply to his critics (primarily Lewis Theobald) and other hack writers, as well as a broader critique of George II and Walpole. Published anonymously under a misleading imprint suggesting a Dublin first edition (which does not exist). Editions followed in 1729 (Dunciad Variorum), 1742 (A New Dunciad), and 1743 (Dunciad in four books). This 12mo impression is the first and precedes the 8vo printing of the same year. Bound with the second edition of Edmund Curll's Key, which spells out Pope's allusions and provides full names where Pope only supplies a first initial. Thus the close of the first stanza ("Still Dunce the second reigns like Dunce the first?") is glossed as "Meaning Mr. Theobald succeeds Mr. Settle, if he has not a worse Meaning," which of course he has, referring to the accession of George II the previous year. Also bound with the first edition of The Progress of Dullness, which takes Pope's original title to The Dunciad and the one used to announce a sequel on the final leaf of the first edition. [Bound with:] [CURLL, Edmund]. A Compleat Key to the Dunciad. London: E. Curll, 1728. Second edition. vi, [7]-22, [2, ads] pp. Collation: A^8 B^4 [and:] [STANHOPE, Hugh (i.e. William Bond?)]. La "horographia" in senso stretto viene definita "doctrina describendarum linearum in qualibet superficie, quibus lucente sole, tamquam in speculo, omnes tum annuae, tum diu … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLBECK, Jo[seph]
Sprotbrough, 1728. Sprotbrough,, 1728.. Survey'd for Godfrey Copley Esq. by Jo. Colbeck Ano. Dom. 1728. Large manuscript survey, fine original hand-colour, on two pieces of vellum, joined, some dust soiling. Large and detailed eighteenth century survey of the Copley Estate and its environs in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Surrounding the map are several tables providing information upon the owners of the land, outlined in the survey, together with table denoting the various parishes that bounded the estates. Numerous pencil sketches abound with deer depicted in 'New Park', the Sprotbrough Hall to right of Sprotbrough, and divisions within the fields. The plan is bounded at to the south by the River Dunn. Godfrey Copley (1706-1761), had inherited Sprotbrough Hall and estate after his father Lionel Copley passed away in 1719; who himself have inherited the estate in 1709 after the demise the 2nd Baronet Godfrey Copley (1653-1709), whom had built Sprotbrough Hall, in the late seventeenth century. The 2nd Baronet name would be immortalised by the Copley Medal. Instituted in 1731 by the Royal Society - after a bequest of £100 in Copley's will - the medal is award annually for "outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science". It would appear that the surveyor of the map, Joseph Colbeck was in the employ of Godfrey Copley - as he was named in two documents housed within the National Archives at Kew: Steward to Godfrey Copley, in 1749, and 1759. Scale: (approx.) 13 inches to statute mile. National Archives: DD/CROM/6/7; DD/CROM/6/8.

LA VARENNE
per Giovanni de' Paoli, 1728. In-24 gr. Cfr. Benporat "Storia della gastronomia italiana", pp. 184-89 - Westbury, p. 130 - Bitting, p. 276 un'ediz. del 1715. Esemplare con barbe, ben conservato.

Extremely rare find. This copy of Figures de la bible by hoet was printed in 1728 and also hand noted on the cover was printed in Amsterdam which makes this one of very few printed in Amsterdam. The book is a collection of bible figures with inscriptions in 5 different languages including English. Each image is a plate collected by Hoyt, amount of plates not verified due to aging condition and not wanting to damage book. Cover is disconnected but in good shape with hand written description of book on cover. Binding is starting to show wear with splitting of the binding but still intact. Included in pictures are an estimate of book value from 2012 and an auction price of the same book. There are 27 different artists plates listed on the inner cover page (hand written) one of these plates are listed as belonging to Philippe de Champaigne. Plates are in very good shape measuring approximately 17x11 each with some Browning of pages, most pages have hand written notes of artist and date but not interfering with plates art. This book has been wrapped and stored in dark storage for the past 40+ years. Please note I am not a book dealer and have tried to describe condition to the best of my ability. Ask any questions you may have and I'll respond asap.
