NORTH, Roger.]
London: Printed for E. Curll, 1726. London: Printed for E. Curll,, 1726. Or, certain observations made by an English gentleman upon the husbandry of Flanders; and the same compared with that of England. Wherein upon a careful examination of the soils of each country, and from some new experiments made in our own agriculture, it is demonstrated that a younger brother, with only five hundred pounds, laid out as directed, shall be able to spend more than his elder brother, who has a thousand pounds a year; and so for any sum, in a less, or, greater proportion. Also a certain method of improving meadow grounds, from forty shillings to six pounds an acre, by fish-ponds. 2 works in one volume, duodecimo (161 x 105 mm). Early 20th-century speckled calf, spine banded in gilt with compartments elaborately decorated in gilt, French fillet gilt border to covers, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, bookplate of Patrick Hume (1641-1724), 1st Earl of Marchmont to binder's blank. Tips lightly worn, occasional light scattered foxing to text block, text block otherwise clean, a very good copy. First edition thus. The first part of this work consists of a revised and abridged version of Richard Weston's Discourse on the Husbandry of Brabant and Flanders, which was first published in 1646. Primarily known for his writings on law and politics, Roger North (1651-1734) originally published his discourse on fish ponds in 1713.

VALLISNIERI Antonio
Gio. (Dario Generali). Buon esemplare, a pieni margini, con barbe, genuino.

BEIGEBUNDEN: Eines Hoch-Edl. Hochweis. Rahts (...) Lübeck Revidirte Ober-Gerichts- auch Nieder- Gast- See und Appellation-Gerichts, Imgleichen Kantzeley und andere Ordnungen. Auffs neue gedruckt. Jahrhunderts seinen deutschrechtlichen Ursprung bewahrte. Unter den Städten, die Lübsches Recht anwandten waren Rostock, Stralsund, Oldenburg, Plön, Kiel, Elbing, Reval, Memel, Danzig, Wolgast, Stolp, Kolberg, Barth, Krakau, Nowgorod, Wismar, Riga u.v.a. [Click Below for Full Description]

Tagli in rosso. To see the convulsions, agonies and tortures of a poor fellow-creature, whom they cannot restore nor recompense, dying to gratify luxury and tickle callous and rank organs, must require a rocky heart, and a great degree of cruelty and ferocity. I cannot find any great difference between feeding on human flesh and feeding on animal flesh, except custom and practice". SHELVOCKE, George
London: J. Senex, 1726. Sides of binding a bit rubbed but a nice copy.. Octavo, with a folding double-hemisphere world map and four fine engraved plates, two of them folding; contemporary panelled calf, well rebacked. First edition of several of this thrilling account of a privateering expedition in the South Seas. Shelvocke's very readable narrative, though chiefly intended to defend himself against charges of piracy and embezzlement, was a best-seller enjoyed for many years by the reading public. At William Wordsworth's suggestion nearly seventy years after its first publication it was the immediate prompt and one of the chief sources for Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.'Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernàndez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao. Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct... Shelvocke mentioned the gold of California and the guano of Peru...' NEWTON, Isaac
Apud Guil. & Joh. Innys, London, 1726. LARGE PAPER COPY. 4to (289 x 225 mm). [32], 530, [6] pp., including half-title, dedication leaf, Halley's commendatory verse leaf, numerous woodcut diagrams and the engraving on p. 506. Lacking the engraved portrait frontispiece, the privilege and the ad leaf found in some copies. Full diced calf of the period (rebacked, extremities worn and scuffed), marbled endpapers. Very minor occasional staining, some faint, mainly marginal spotting and soiling, leaf A4 frayed at top corner, Halley's verse leaf misbound after A3. A large and bright copy, here without the frontispiece privilege and ad leaves as often. PMM 161 (describing the first edition); Babson 13; Gray 9; Wallis 9; HBS 64483. ----- The stated third edition, this one of the 200 large-paper copies on "General Royal Paper" with the "CC" watermark. The absence of the license leaf from this copy, as with some of the known copies of the large paper copies, suggests that they were produced prior to the regular paper version. The Babson catalogue notes that the license leaf had no assigned signature location, and is found at various places in copies of the regular edition. This edition was the last published during the author's lifetime and is the basis for all subsequent editions. The editor was Henry Pemberton, M.D., F.R.S., and this rescension of the text contains a new preface by Newton and a large number of alterations. The most important of these is in the scholium on fluxions, in which Leibniz had been mentioned by name in the earlier editions.
