ROBERTS, George.
London: Printed for A. Bettesworth at the Red Lyon in Pater-Noster-Row and J. Osborn at the Ship at St. Saviour's Dock-Head near Horsely-Down. First edition. 8vo., vi, 458pp., folding map, 4 engraved plates, contemporary calf, neat repairs to joints, lightly rubbed, an excellent copy. A true work of exploration, this account gained a reputation for being imaginary in the nineteenth century and for being written by Daniel Defoe. The veracity of the account can be confirmed by the fact that Roberts incorporates descriptions of many hydrographical features, nautical hazards, partially submerged rocks, and so on, that had never been previously recorded, or had appeared on the charts. A typical example, and possibly the most enduring of these was Letton's Rock, which Roberts actually discovered and named after Pedro Letton (i.e. Pero Leitão), who was a local governor and friend of Roberts. The rock still appears on the charts with the name that Roberts gave it. (From information provided by Ray Howgego and published in his Encyclopedia of Atlantic Nautical Hazards, 1700-1930, I.B. Tauris, London 2015). Hoegego also writes: "There are many similar details, names of minor traders, governors, families, etc., that Roberts could only have known if he'd actually been there". In this first-person narrative, George Roberts is an English slaver. In 1721 he signs on as chief mate for a voyage to Virginia via Madeira and Barbados. Roberts falls out with the captain however, and sest out on his own for Guinea. He is captured by pirates and set adrift in a sloop which wrecks on St. John, one … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelvocke, George (1675-1742)
Printed for J. Senex; W. and J. Innys, J. Osborn and T. Longman, 1726. First Edition. Hardcover. "Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru, and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernandez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao, Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accussed of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct. In it he mentions the gold of California and the guano of Peru, more than a hundred years before their rediscovery in the 19th century. An incident in the narrative describing the passage around Cape Horn, in which a sailor kills an albatross, is said to have inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (Hill 1557). 468 p. with a folding world map that depicts California as an island, four plates (two folding), title page vignette, and decorative head and tail pieces, and initials. Octavo. In a period one-half black calf over marbled paper binding, with gilt stamping and five raised bands. An ink presentation inscription from C.J. Capron to C.H.W. Capron of California on a prefatory blank leaf is dated May 1841. A bit of foxing to the plates, the pref … [Click Below for Full Description]

TOWNE, Richard.
SOLE EDITION of the first book on the diseases endemic to Barbados and perhaps the second book on the diseases of the Caribbean, published the year after the work on Jamaica of Sir Hans Sloane, to whom this book is dedicated (and who, says Towne in his dedication, had "unquestionably the best physical library in the world"). In this work Towne records the results of seven years clinical experience in Barbados, describing each of the prevalent diseases in detail and the modes of treatment that he found successful. He includes prescription formulas for the various medicines he administered for each disease.

Adam Smith
Whitestone, Chamberlaine et.al, 1726. Good: Binding has some scuffs and loss to head and tail of spine: writing inside front on all spares: Owner's name scratched out on title page; claim of ownership written on page 159 (John Warren's Book). Volume I of Adam Smith's classic on economic theory, this is the Dublin "pirated" edition, it's publication a bit of a literary mystery. With Interspersed and Instructive Reflections on the Discipline of the Primitive Churches. MATHER, COTTONBoston: Printed for S. Gerrish in Cornhill, 1726. A fantastically original copy of one of Cotton Mather's most important works, and an "important exposition of the tenets of Congregationalism that carefully reaffirms the principles of the CAMBRIDGE PLATFORM" (Streeter). Cotton Mather FRS (February 12, 1663 - February 13, 1728; A.B. 1678, Harvard College; A.M. 1681, honorary doctorate 1710, University of Glasgow) was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. He left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention, though he is most frequently remembered today for his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials. He was subsequently denied the presidency of Harvard College which his father, Increase Mather, had held. Holmes reveals that although published in 1726, the work was actually written in 1701, quoting from Mather's diary from October 3 of that year: "About this Time I finished a Work, which cost me much Time, and Care and Study. I wrote in a Book of above an hundred pages in Quarto, an account of the Principles and Practices of the Churches of New England. The work is considered to be one of the most influential of all English works on witchcraft and the paranormal, first published 1681. Good Copy.

Bettesworth, and J. Batley, in Pater-noster-Row; W. Mears, and J. Hooke, near Temple-bar, in Fleet-street. 1726. Glanvill first wrote on the subject of supernatural phenomena in A Philosophical Endeavour towards the Defence of the Being of Witches and Apparitions in 1666. The impression was largely destroyed in the same year by the Great Fire of London, and thus a new edition of the work appeared the following year under the title Some Philosophical Considerations Touching the Being of Witches. In 1668 an enlarged edition was printed, and this too went through two impressions, now entitled A Blow at Modern Sadducism. At the time of his death in 1680, Glanvill had for several years been planning an expanded version of A Blow at Modern Sadducism, including reports of cases h … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALLADIO (Andrea). LEONI (Jacques)
A La Haye Chez Pierre Gosse, 1726. Folio, 4 parts in one volume, 447 x 271 mms., pp. [viii], 67 [68 blank], xliii [plates], [69 - 70] 71 - 115 [116 blank], lxi, [iv], 3 - 46, xxii, [ii], 20 [21 - 23 contents, 24 blank], civ + 3 blank leaves, title-pages in red and black, full-page engraved frontispiece and full-page engraved portrait, with 12 engravings in text, 226 engraved plates, including 14 folding plates, contemporary calf (a bit dried), spine richly and ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; fore-edges of 9 plates slightly soiled, binding a bit worn and with early repairs, but a good copy in more than acceptable condition. The translation from the Italian text of N. du Bois into French by Leoni, with the 1715 notes of Inigo Jones incorporated into the text makes this one of the most interesting and formidable editions of I Quattro Libri by Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580), published in 1570. Palladio was born as Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, and, as the Encyclopedia Britannica notes "The name Palladio was given to Andrea, after a Humanist habit, as an allusion to the mythological figure Pallas Athena and to a character in Trissino's poem 'Italia liberata dai goti.' It indicates the hopes Trissino had for his protégé." The earliest and chief exponents in Britain of the Palladian style were Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, Elizabeth Wilbraham, and the Earl of Burlington. I can add little to the praise or assessments heaped on Palladio, but I can at least echo Pope's lines in his Epistle to Burlingnton: "You show us, Rome was glorious, not profuse,/ And pompous … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Somerset County, New Jersey) Dunster, Charles
Perth Amboy [NJ]: August 30, 1726. 1p. Pen and ink on vellum with wax seal, docketed on verso. 1 vols. 15-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches. East Jersey Proprietor. An important Somerset County document relating to the colonial history of New Jersey. The land in the Raritan Valley of New Jersey, encompassing what is now Somerset County, was acquired by the East Jersey proprietors in the 1680s, through several purchases from its Native American owners. The land conveyed in our indenture is half of lot No.55 of the Second Indian Title, which was surveyed for Lord Neil Campbell, a Scottish nobleman who served as Deputy Governor of East New Jersey during 1686. The land was subsequently acquired by East Jersey Proprietor, and Perth Amboy merchant Charles Dunster, Esq. (d.1727). In addition to the signauture of Charles Dunster, our indenture is also signed by Lewis Morris (1671-1746), who at the time of this conveyance was president of the New Jersey Provincial Council, as well as Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court. Morris would be appointed the 8th Colonial Governor of New Jersey in 1738, and served in that office until his death in 1746. Morris was the grandfather of many prominent Americans, including Lewis Morris (1726-1798), Delegate to the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence; New York Chief Justice Richard Morris; New Jersey Chief Justice Robert Morris (1745-1815); and U.S. Senator Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816). Other signatures include: Alexander Mackdowell, and Michael Kearney, Treasurer of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, who was also the s … [Click Below for Full Description]
