TOWNE, Richard.
SOLE EDITION of the first book on the diseases endemic to Barbados and perhaps the second book on the diseases of the Caribbean, published the year after the work on Jamaica of Sir Hans Sloane, to whom this book is dedicated (and who, says Towne in his dedication, had "unquestionably the best physical library in the world"). In this work Towne records the results of seven years clinical experience in Barbados, describing each of the prevalent diseases in detail and the modes of treatment that he found successful. He includes prescription formulas for the various medicines he administered for each disease.

"Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru, and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernandez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao, Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct. In it he mentions the gold of California and the guano of Peru, more than a hundred years before their rediscovery in the 19th century. An incident in the narrative describing the passage around Cape Horn, in which a sailor kills an albatross, is said to have inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner "(Hill). Cotton Mather
Samuel Gerrish. Ratio Disciplinae Fratrum Nov-Anglorum. A Faithful Account of the Account of the Discipline Prosessed and Practised; in the Churches of New-England. With Interspersed and Instructive Reflections on the Discipline of the Primitive Churches. MATHER, COTTONBoston: Printed for S. Gerrish in Cornhill, 1726. A fantastically original copy of one of Cotton Mather's most important works, and an "important exposition of the tenets of Congregationalism that carefully reaffirms the principles of the CAMBRIDGE PLATFORM" (Streeter). Cotton Mather FRS (February 12, 1663 - February 13, 1728; A.B. 1678, Harvard College; A.M. 1681, honorary doctorate 1710, University of Glasgow) was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. He left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention, though he is most frequently remembered today for his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials. He was subsequently denied the presidency of Harvard College which his father, Increase Mather, had held. Holmes reveals that although published in 1726, the work was actually written in 1701, quoting from Mather's diary from October 3 of that year: "About this Time I finished a Work, which cost me much Time, and Care and Study. I wrote in a Book of above an hundred pages in Quarto, an account of the Principles and Practices of the Churches of New England. But I embellished it all along, with a further Account of what was done in the primitive Churches, which required some exquisite la … [Click Below for Full Description]

Glanvill first wrote on the subject of supernatural phenomena in A Philosophical Endeavour towards the Defence of the Being of Witches and Apparitions in 1666. The impression was largely destroyed in the same year by the Great Fire of London, and thus a new edition of the work appeared the following year under the title Some Philosophical Considerations Touching the Being of Witches. In 1668 an enlarged edition was printed, and this too went through two impressions, now entitled A Blow at Modern Sadducism. PALLADIO (Andrea). LEONI (Jacques)
A La Haye Chez Pierre Gosse, 1726. Folio, 4 parts in one volume, 447 x 271 mms., pp. [viii], 67 [68 blank], xliii [plates], [69 - 70] 71 - 115 [116 blank], lxi, [iv], 3 - 46, xxii, [ii], 20 [21 - 23 contents, 24 blank], civ + 3 blank leaves, title-pages in red and black, full-page engraved frontispiece and full-page engraved portrait, with 12 engravings in text, 226 engraved plates, including 14 folding plates, contemporary calf (a bit dried), spine richly and ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; fore-edges of 9 plates slightly soiled, binding a bit worn and with early repairs, but a good copy in more than acceptable condition. The translation from the Italian text of N. du Bois into French by Leoni, with the 1715 notes of Inigo Jones incorporated into the text makes this one of the most interesting and formidable editions of I Quattro Libri by Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580), published in 1570. Palladio was born as Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, and, as the Encyclopedia Britannica notes "The name Palladio was given to Andrea, after a Humanist habit, as an allusion to the mythological figure Pallas Athena and to a character in Trissino's poem 'Italia liberata dai goti.' It indicates the hopes Trissino had for his protégé." The earliest and chief exponents in Britain of the Palladian style were Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, Elizabeth Wilbraham, and the Earl of Burlington. I can add little to the praise or assessments heaped on Palladio, but I can at least echo Pope's lines in his Epistle to Burlingnton: "You show us, Rome was glorious, not profuse,/ And pompous … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Dyer, John et al]
London: T. Warner, [1726]. First edition, containing the second edition of Dyer's "Grongar Hill" [vi], 90 pp. 12mo. 'Grongar Hill'. First edition of this poetic miscellany continaing the second printing of John Dyer's topographical poem "Grongar Hill," a description of a climb above his home Aberglasne in Carmarthenshire, Wales. "Publication of Dyer's poems started in 1726 with three versions of 'Grongar Hill' in separate miscellanies, as a Pindaric ode and in two versions of octosyllabic couplets" (ODNB). The present example is the first in octosyllabic couplets; a revised version was published in a July 1726 Miscellany by David Lewis. Dyer's poetry of place and his direct, plain language, anticipates the poetry of Wordsworth, who praised Dyer's works in his sonnet "To the Poet, John Dyer" Case 335; ESTC N20426 (10 copies). Provenance: Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate). Modern tan buckram. Title and final leaf extended at inner margin, some soiling and toning, a few running page numbers trimmed at top margin.

Shakespeare, William
Dublin: Printed by and for Geo. Grierson ... and for George Ewing ..., 1726. First Irish edition of Shakespeare. Wood-engraved head- and tailpieces and initials. Lacking subscriber's list called for in ESTC. 8 vols. 8vo. 'The first edition of Shakespeare's works published in Ireland' (Jaggard). A rare complete set of the first edition of Shakespeare's works printed in Ireland. Published in 8 volumes by George Grierson and George Ewing, this piracy reprints Pope's 6-volume 4to edition of 1725, including Rowe's Life and the Index of the Characters, Sentiments, Speeches and Descriptions. It also includes the text of Sewell's supplementary volume 7 -- volume 8 in this edition. Jaggard notes that the edition "appears to have met with poor encouragement, only 162 subscribers offering the needful support." This was not Grierson and Ewing's first attempt to print Shakespeare in Ireland. Grierson's 1721 edition of Hamlet is believed to be the first printing of any Shakespeare work in Ireland; Grierson also printed editions of Othello and Julius Caesar that year. In 1723 Ewing issued an edition of Macbeth. All early Irish editions of Shakespeare are rare. We find no complete copies of this set at auction on ABPC or Rare Book Hub and fewer than 20 copies in institutions. The Eccles copy of the 1723 Macbeth brought over $31,000 in 2004. With Irish provenance from the library of Mount Congreve, County Waterford. Jaggard, p. 498; ESTC T63759. Provenance: John Congreve (1801-1863, armorial bookplate in each volume).

Swift, Jonathan
Benj. Motte, London, 1726. Mixed early first editions of Johnathan Swift's masterpiece, Gulliver's Travels. Volume I is a Teerink AA edition, Volume II Teerink B edition. Octavo, bound in contemporary calf, engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials, five engraved maps, gilt titles to the spine. In near fine condition. A very nice example of this classic in English literature. Jonathan Swift's masterpiece will "last as long as the language, because it describes the vices of man in all nations" (DNB). "A remarkable feat in the creation of imaginary worlds as a vehicle for satire upon the political and religious establishments of the day" (Clute & Grant, 914). "Gulliver's Travels has given Swift an immortality beyond temporary fame". For every edition designed for the reader with an eye to the historical background, 20 have appeared, abridged or adapted, for readers who care nothing for the satire and enjoy it as a first-class story" (PMM 185). "Of all Swift's writings it best shows the merits of his mind and his gifts of expression". It is important to realize that it could be written only by one who had the highest ideals for human achievement and who despaired of the achieving" (Baugh et al., 865-66)"although Swift himself expressed this hope for his "Travells" to a friend: "They are admirable Things, and will wonderfully mend the world" (Rothschild 2104). Shelvocke, George (1675-1742)
Printed for J. Senex; W. and J. Innys, J. Osborn and T. Longman, 1726. First Edition. Hardcover. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao, Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accussed of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct. In it he mentions the gold of California and the guano of Peru, more than a hundred years before their rediscovery in the 19th century. An incident in the narrative describing the passage around Cape Horn, in which a sailor kills an albatross, is said to have inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (Hill 1557). 468 p. with a folding world map that depicts California as an island, four plates (two folding), title page vignette, and decorative head and tail pieces, and initials. Langley, Batty (1696-1751)
London: For W. & J. Innys, 1726. Folio, contemporary calf; viii-[xvi], 136pp., 40 plates. First edition. Good: calf rubbed, chaffed, rebacked with tape; boards holding on (to the tape-based "spine") loosely, but in need of imminent reinforcement; collated and complete, with plate 40 misnumbered 41 (the 60 plates advertised at the title page seems to have been a generous overanticipation), pp.90-1 misnumbered 78-9; a previous owner, one R.B. Ritchie, signed the verso of many plates; occasional marginal grubbiness, occasional small marginal notes, text generally clean; pages toned to a small extent, all quite legible; first plate rebacked, possibly with some loss; last several plates soiled with small tears, some loss to the final. Still, very hard to find an original at this stage, and pleasing enough even given the wear of time. Extra postage may be needed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bettesworth, and J. Batley, in Pater-noster-Row; W. Mears, and J. Hooke, near Temple-bar, in Fleet-street. 1726. At the time of his death in 1680, Glanvill had for several years been planning an expanded version of A Blow at Modern Sadducism, including reports of cases h … [Click Below for Full Description]
