Johnson, Captain Charles [Defoe, Daniel]
1726. The history of the Pirates by “Defoe”; the source of enduring pirate facts and legends. 1726. London. Two volumes, 8vo. 1 [blank], 10 ff., 17-447, 1 [blank], 7. Ff., 413, 3 pp. Contemporary calf sympathetically rebacked. An excellent copy, largely absent from flaws, light toning. 6,000 $ First complete edition, and best –enlarged- edition; the first edition, published in 1724, consisted of a single volume, “an appropriate sequel to Exquemelin’s ‘History of theBuccaniers.” (Sabin). The illustration, which is also more extensive then the 1724 edition, comprises 3 engraved plates: portraits of Edward Teach a.k.a. Blackbeard, Ann Bonny, and Mary Read, notorious female pirates and 2 folding maps. “The fourth edition of Vol. I. was issued at the same time as the first appearance of the second volume so this really forms the first complete edition” (Maggs, 1935, 382). Should one accept Defoe’s authorship, this work is unique among his writings in having been elaborately reviewed by Defoe himself in Mist's Weekly Journal, 23 May, 6 June and 29 August 1724. The second volume devoted particularly to the pirate's of Madagascar and a long narrative of a sailor's captivity in Magadoxe, taken almost verbatim from a manuscript in the Sloane Collection of the British Museum and was not published until 25 July 1728. Authorship: the work has had a long debated authorship attribution, more recently Daniel Defoe has been considered its author, however it is an ongoing debate; “The first edition of A General History of the Pyrates was printed for Charles Rivington in ‘March or April 1724’ … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOHN STEVENS
London: J. Darby, A. Bettsworth et al, 1726. First quarto edition (first published as a folio in 1705-06), and second edition overall; pp. vii, [1], [806], [1] ads; title-p. printed in red and black; lexicon in triple column; title backed, mildly dampstained, and with minor loss to the ruled border at the lower outer margin; prelims worn at edges, occasional dampstaining throughout; contemporary full speckled calf, neatly rebacked, black morocco label on spine; good and sound. Stevens, "probably an Irishman" (DNB) was an officer in the English army with some military experience in Ireland, and perhaps Portugal; his father was purportedly on the staff of the English ambassador to Spain. "This 1726 edition is the first dictionary in the history of Spanish and English bilingual lexicography not to share the volume in which it is contained with some other work, such as a grammar or dialogues É Because of the uncritical methods of borrowing from Minsheu, Oudin, Aldrete, Covarrubias, and sundry reference works, because of the long-winded definitions, and because of the failure to show the gender of Spanish vocabulary noun entries, while Minsheu furnished a perfectly adequate treatment of them, one would be hard put to say that much of a lexicographical advance had been made during the 106 years between Minsheu's dictionary and Stevens' " (Steiner, Two Centuries of Spanish and English Bilingual Lexicography, p. 58 ff.). Shelvocke, George (1675-1742)
Printed for J. Senex; W. and J. Innys, J. Osborn and T. Longman, 1726. First Edition. Hardcover. "Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru, and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernandez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao, Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accussed of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct. In it he mentions the gold of California and the guano of Peru, more than a hundred years before their rediscovery in the 19th century. An incident in the narrative describing the passage around Cape Horn, in which a sailor kills an albatross, is said to have inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (Hill 1557). 468 p. with a folding world map that depicts California as an island, four plates (two folding), title page vignette, and decorative head and tail pieces, and initials. Octavo. In a period one-half black calf over marbled paper binding, with gilt stamping and five raised bands. An ink presentation inscription from C.J. Capron to C.H.W. Capron of California on a prefatory blank leaf is dated May 1841. A bit of foxing to the plates, the pref … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pirates, Piracy, Buccaneers]; Rogers Capt. Woodes
London: For Bernard Lintot and Edward Simon, 1726. Second Edition, Corrected, of this very scarce Buccaneering classic. With five finely engraved folding maps, being Herman Moll's beautiful map of the world and four maps depicting the Pacific Coastline from Mexico to Chile, and with the very impressive folding engraved plates (added for this edition) of an alligator and a crocodile. 8vo, in full contemporary calf, the spine with raised bands and a single black morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. xix, 428, 57, [6] pp. A very pleasing copy of this scarce book. The text-block very clean and fresh, complete with all plates and maps, the large world map with a few small neat repairs to the verso, the contemporary binding strong and attractive with some expected evidence of age to the calf, a bit of wear to the morocco label and tips. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK, ONE OF THE GREAT BUCCANEERING BOOKS AND THE CLASSIC SWASHBUCKLER. THIS SCARCE SECOND EDITION IS IMPROVED OVER THE FIRST WITH ADDITIONAL ILLUSTRATIONS ADDED. Captain Woodes Rogers' account of his voyage, and of fighting as a Privateer against the Spanish during the War of the Spanish Succession, is a lively colourfully written adventure that has become near legendary "It is a work of great interest and possesses a quaint humor that renders it delightful reading. In many respects the voyage was a notable one, but in none more than this, that with a mongrel crew, and with officers often mutinous, good order and discipline were maintained throughout" (DNB). CERBELLON DE LA VERA (Eustaquio).
TERENCE. [BENTLEY (Richard), editor]
Cantabrigiae Apud Cornelium Crownfield, 1726. FIRST EDITION. 4to, 247 x 191 mms., pp. [vii], xxxv, 444, [viii], 87 [88 blank], fine engraved frontispiece, engrave portrait of the Prince of Wales, later 18th century calf, with coat of arms in gilt on each cover, rebacked, gilt spine, black leather label; some scuffing of rear board, but a good to very good copy. Bentley (1662 - 1742) made an excellent start on his career as a classicist in June 1691: "His Latin letter to John Mill, principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, was printed in June 1691 as a 98-page appendix to the editio princeps of the Historia chronica by John Malalas of Antioch (c.480–c.570)" (ODNB). "Francis Hare's edition of Terence appeared in mid-1724 without acknowledgement that Hare had learned its novel feature, metrics, from Bentley. Resenting his erstwhile friend's ingratitude, Bentley rapidly prepared his own edition, published early in 1726. The text, which he reckoned to have corrected in 1000 places, was transformed through Bentley's awareness of a variety of metres where previous critics had imagined poetic licence. He stated his principles in a concise introduction and placed metrical marks throughout the text. Unfortunately he added a hastily prepared edition of Phaedrus, to anticipate one by Hare, and Hare exposed its weaknesses in his acrimonious Epistola critica (1726)" (do). As readers of Pope will know, Bentley did not fare well in The Dunciad. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition. 4to. ( 182mm. ) Drop-head title. Pp. 4. Stitched as issued. Cropped in the head margins of A1 and A4 with loss of the page numbers only, contents a little dusty. Signed ( printed ) Wharton at the end. Philip Wharton, 1st Duke of Wharton ( 1698 - 1731) , Jacobite politician. He was the only son and heir, by his second wife, of Thomas Wharton, marquis of Wharton. He was educated at home under the guidance of his father whose intention was to make him a pure whig. In 1716 whilst travelling in Europe he wrote to " The Old Pretender " James Francis Edward, Prince of Wales (1688 - 1766) the son of the deposed James II of England and Ireland, VII of Scotland, who was then residing at Avignon. Warton was asked to visit his court where it is said he received an offer of the title of the Duke of Northumberland. Warton was much impressed by the visit and warmed to the Jacobite cause , however on his return to England in December 1716 he acted directly against the sentiments he embraced at Avignon. Although he inherited his father's estates he became indebted through various unsuccessful business ventures. He lost so much money in the South Sea Scheme that he had to sell his estates in Ireland and England. During the winter of 1725 - 1726 he was in Vienna where he openly adopted the cause of ' James III ' , from whom he received the Garter and his patent as Duke of Northumberland. In the important and seminal item offered here Warton, at last, nails his colours to the Jacobite mast. For more details of Warton see ODNB.
