A scarce posthumous publication of sermons by Samuel Willard, an early American-born Boston minister who served as the pastor of the Old South Church and vice president of Harvard College. In the Preface the editors praise Willard's works, claiming they "drew many of the most knowing and judicious Persons both from Town and College, who heard them with so great a Relish, that they have ever since the Author's Death, which was on Sept. 12, 1707, been earnestly desirous of this Publication, and given such a Character of them as has continually rais'd the same Desire in others...." They also state that the work is "the largest that was ever Printed Here, and the first of Divinity in a Folio Volume." Parchment. 4�. 210 pp. *paper browned, top spine slightly damaged, otherwise good condition* 'Vanaf 1698 verschijnen er zo'n dertig jaar lang uitgaven van de Schimp- en hekeldigten uit verscheide poeten, gevolgt na [...] Juvenalis, en Quevedo, &c. Ze verschijnen bij Tyme van Nes te Hoorn. Achter dit adres ziet men wel Timotheus ten Hoorn uit de Amsterdamse Nes. Dat kan niet voor alle edities gelden, want Ten Hoorn overlijdt in 1715. Hij publiceerde wel onder verschillende gefingeerde uitgeversadressen (...). Het werk had duidelijk enig succes; vermoedelijk vanwege de raillerende inhoud. Personen en situaties zijn duidelijk herkenbaar. Jan van Hoogstraten (1662-1736) wordt wel als de auteur opgevoerd. In de dertig succesjaren verandert de inhoud van de verschillende uitgaven, of wordt aangevuld.' Letteroefeningen. In DBNL staat een artikel van Frank Peeters over de drukker Tyme van Nes'Janus', zo noemt Lambert Bidloo Jan van Hoogstraten (1662-1736) (jongere broer van de geleerde David) in zijn Panpo�ticon Batav�m, de po�et met de twee gezichten. Het goede gezicht, aldus Bidloo, toont hem als dichter van stichtelijke verzen, zoals De Kruisheld (1712), een epos over de apostel Paulus, en de Zegepraal der Goddelijke liefde (1709), een bundel vrome zangen en zinnebeelden. Daarin alleen aardt Jan naar zijn vader Fran�ois, oordeelt Bidloo terecht. Het kwade gezicht echter toont de meedogenloze satiricus achter een verzameling Schimp- en Hekeldigten (1698, 1707), venijnig, kwetsend, tot karaktermoord toe'.

Cornelis Troost (1696-1750) was an 18th-century actor and painter from Amsterdam. He gave up his acting career for painting in 1723 when he became the pupil of Arnold Boonen. He is most famous as an etcher, and is credited with inventing the 'remarque', a small marginal doodle often not intended to be printed in the print for publication. Chodowiecki, however, often did include them, as a bonus for collectors. Condition: Excellent, given age. Ample margins, very good example. Attached to carrier sheet.
