Lithographiae Wirceburgensis, ducentis lapidum figuratorum, a potiori insectiformium, prodigiosis imaginibus exornatae specimen primum.

1726. Wirceburgi, apud P.W. Fuggart, 1726. Folio (310 x 200mm). pp. (12), 96 (recte 98), with engraved frontispiece and 21 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spine in 6 compartments. A fine copy of the first edition of one of the rarest curiosities in geological literature. "In the early years of the 18th century there were still a few skirmishes over the organic origin of fossils, but the notion that they were mere sports of nature was finally killed by ridiculous. Some pupils of J. Beringer of Würzburg decided that they would assists nature and their Professor by making some of these sports themselves; they therefore carved fantastic figures and hid them in the hills which Beringer explored. After making a large collection, he published a fully illustrated work 'Lithographiae Wirceburgensis' 1726, now one of the rarest curiosities of geological literature; for Beringer finally discovered the deception, endeavoured to buy up and destroy the whole collection" (Edwards. Early History of Paleontology, p. 34). Unfortunately he did not destroy the copies which he purchased, they were found in his house after his death and bought by a publisher who provided them with a new title-page and issued them in 1767 as a second edition of this work. M.E. Jahn & D.J. Woolf in their translation and commentary of the above work 'The Lying Stones of Dr. Johann Bartholomew Adam Beringer ...' point out that the fakes were made by two academic rivals of the university, J.I. Roderick, professor of geography and mathematics and J.G. von Eckhart, privy counsellor and university librarian, and not Beringer's students as is often believed. Our copy does not have the six pages of Hueber's 'Corollaries' which have no relation with the above work. Hueber's small work is inserted in some copies, however most copies do not have it.         STAMPA VERRUCA

J. Darby, A. Bettsworth [et al.], London 1726 - First quarto edition (first published as a folio in 1705-06), and second edition overall; pp. vii, [1], [806], [1] ads; title-p. printed in red and black; lexicon in triple column; title backed, mildly dampstained, and with minor loss to the ruled border at the lower outer margin; prelims worn at edges, occasional dampstaining throughout; contemporary full speckled calf, neatly rebacked, black morocco label on spine; good and sound. Stevens, "probably an Irishman" (DNB) was an officer in the English army with some military experience in Ireland, and perhaps Portugal; his father was purportedly on the staff of the English ambassador to Spain. "This 1726 edition is the first dictionary in the history of Spanish and English bilingual lexicography not to share the volume in which it is contained with some other work, such as a grammar or dialogues É Because of the uncritical methods of borrowing from Minsheu, Oudin, Aldrete, Covarrubias, and sundry reference works, because of the long-winded definitions, and because of the failure to show the gender of Spanish vocabulary noun entries, while Minsheu furnished a perfectly adequate treatment of them, one would be hard put to say that much of a lexicographical advance had been made during the 106 years between Minsheu's dictionary and Stevens' " (Steiner, Two Centuries of Spanish and English Bilingual Lexicography, p. 58 ff.).         Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World in Four Parts by Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships [Gulliver's Travels]

Benjamin Motte, London 1726 - Full contemporary paneled calf, neatly rebacked. Mixed states, volume 1 is Teerink's state AA (290) throughout, volume II is the text of Teerink's "second edition" (293) but the main title and Part IV title of state B (291). Though the first three states in Teerink's methodology were proven to be separate editions, he continued to refer to them as states because that is how the printers thought of them - by traditional measures this is a second edition with a mixed 3rd/4th. Likely paired very early on or even originally (the bindings are very similar - though not identical - and one has "Joseph Parsons" on the rear endpaper and one "John Parsons"), it was fairly common for title pages to be substituted as they were exhausted. In any case, a nice pair of an early edition of one of the great satires and one of the the World's most lastingly comic works of fiction. Four maps, two plans, light foxing and browning, a few small stains in the margins, tears and notes to endpapers, one or two marginal notes. xii, 148, (6), 164, (6), 155, (1), 199, (1)pp. Size: Octavo (8vo). 2-volume set (complete).         TRAVELS INTO SEVERAL REMOTE NATIONS OF THE WORLD. [GULLIVER'S TRAVELS]

Printed for Benj. Motte, London 1726 - 197 x 127 mm (7 3/4 x 5"). Usual misnumbered pages in volume I; 16-page publisher's catalogue at the end of volume II. Two volumes. FIRST EDITION, Third Issue (Teerink's "B" Edition). Quite pretty 19th century speckled calf by Lloyd & Wallis (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with gilt French fillet border, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with central floral sprig surrounded by small tools and floral cornerpieces, one red and one green morocco label, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of Gulliver (in the second state), four maps, and two plans. Front pastedown with bookplate of Mrs. L. Bartlett. Teerink 291; PMM 185; Rothschild 2108. Joints somewhat rubbed and flaked (though not with any cracks), extremities a bit worn, spines uniformly darkened a shade and with a hint of abrasion (the gilt also slightly dulled), minor marks and spots to boards, but the attractively decorated bindings entirely solid and still rather pretty. First volume with variable browning and offsetting throughout, noticeable in two gatherings (perhaps because of washing?), second volume much better, with only a hint of browning right at edges, isolated trivial defects like a rust spot here and there, but the text in both volumes otherwise fresh and clean. This is the third distinct issue (all printed within two months of each other) of the first edition of probably the greatest satire in the English language. A book with the special merit of appealing to readers of every age, the work ostensibly mocks the popular travel writings of the day, but "Gulliver" was in fact a subtle but potent attack on the contemporary political situation. While most works that rely on current fashions and politics quickly become dated, this one has transcended its time to give Swift immortality because of what PMM calls his two great gifts, "a sustained logic in invention and a facility for absorbing the reader till fiction becomes reality." When the first run sold out within a week of its October 28 printing, the publisher immediately went to work to satisfy demand, with two more issues appearing before the end of the year, ours being published in December.
