1726. (London, c. 1726). 8vo. 16pp. Disbound. The first 10 pages of this catalogue are devoted to general books. For each book a size and price are stated. The rest of page 10 and page 11 contains 'Libri in Usum Scholarum'. The second half of page 16 contains a short list of plays that are sold at one shilling each, without giving more than the title, among which are of course some of Shakespeare's plays. Rare catalogue of Arthur Bettesworth who worked at Paternoster Row between 1726 and 1738. His will was proved on June 9th 1739 (cf Plomer 1726-1777). Plomer also mentions Bettesworth in the dictionary of 1668-1725 as working at the Red-Lion on London Bridge between 1699-1737. He says: "Chiefly a publisher of divinity, though he published many novels, &c., and, like all booksellers on the Bridge, dealt in some questionable literature".

RATIO DISCIPLINÆ FRATRUM NOV-ANGLORUM. A FAITHFUL ACCOUNT OF THE DISCIPLINE PROSESSED AND PRACTISED; IN THE CHURCHES OF NEW=ENGLAND. WITH INTERSPERSED AND INSTRUCTIVE REFLECTIONS ON THE DISCIPLINE OF THE PRIMITIVE CHURCHES

Boston: Printed for S. Gerrish in Cornhill, 1726.. [2],iv,10,207,[3]pp., including contents leaf. Contemporary American brown morocco, tooled in blind. Minor spotting, occasional small tears in margins, else very good. Provenance: Jno. Cotton (inscriptions, variously dated 1729 and 1733); Rev. Chandler Robbins; Jesse Harlow Jr. (inscription, dated 1800, noting that he bought the book at the sale of Rev. Robbins' books). In a half morocco slipcase. One of Cotton Mather's most important works, and an "important exposition of the tenets of Congregationalism that carefully reaffirms the principles of the CAMBRIDGE PLATFORM" (Streeter). Holmes reveals that although published in 1726, the work was actually written in 1701, quoting from Mather's diary from October 3 of that year: "About this Time I finished a Work, which cost me much Time, and Care and Study. I wrote in a Book of above an hundred pages in Quarto, an account of the Principles and Practices of the Churches of New England. But I embellished it all along, with a further Account of what was done in the primitive Churches, which required some exquisite labor. I concluded, that a Book of this Importance, would have a mighty Tendency, to preserve the holy Discipline in our own Churches, from the Dangers of the Apostasy which may threaten it, and promote the Designs of Reformation abroad in the world." Holmes reviews and explains the many delays in Mather publishing the work, the addition of Increase Mather's Attestation dated 1719 and the eventual publication in 1726. The final publication was nearly derailed as the original manuscript was scattered by a strong gust of wind, with the loose sheets finding their way into the garden, the wood pile, and strangers' hands. That every page was recovered without the loss of a single sentence was, as Mather reveals in a letter to Thomas Prince, a sign that the "Angel of the Lord Look'd after it...I don't wonder that such a work must be brought forward with a Struggle. Tis a sign, tis for the Kingdome of God!" (quoted in Holmes). This copy has important provenance to John Cotton (1693- 1757), the minister of the Church in Newton and the great grandson of Puritan divine John Cotton (1585-1652), the maternal grandfather of Cotton Mather.         Ebauche de la religion naturelle. Traduite de l'Anglois, avec un supplement, et autres additions considerables. The Hague: Jean Swart, 1726.

      - First French edition of Wollaston's important work in constructive deism, The Religion of Nature Delineated (privately printed in 1722 then published in 1724, the year of his death). The French translator was one 'Garrigue', perhaps a French protestant since the Garrigues were a prominent Hugenot family. 'The book achieved rapid fame which was to last for over half a century, and spread far beyond the British Isles. We are told that 10,000 copies of it were sold in the course of a few years. In all, eight editions appeared, the last one coming out in 1759. As early as 1726, a French translation was published by Garrigue at the Hague under the title "Ebauche de la Religion Naturelle par Mr. Wollaston", to be followed in 1756 by a fresh edition in three volumes. In the Preface to the work the translator speaks of "l’applaudissement extraordinaire, que le Public a donne a ce livre", and greatly eulogizes the author. The two editions contain also a translation into French by de la Faye, Professor of Oriental Languages at the Hague, of Wollaston's copious Latin, Greek, and Hebrew notes, and supplementary notes by the translator. At the end, three supplementary chapters offer an evaluation of Wollaston's work (Alexander Altmann, 'William Wollaston (1659-1724)', Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England, Vol. XVI, 1952, p. 185). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 4to, xix, [i], 442, [6] pp., no half-title, contemporary plain boards with manuscript spine lettering, somewhat marked and dusty, scattered light browning only, a good unsophisticated copy with wide margins, uncut. Early ink signatures on recto of frontispiece and on title-page of Volume I. Otherwise an excellent set. Housed together in a red morocco clamshell case.Gulliverís Travels, to use the popular title, is one of the greatest satires in the English languageóor any language, for that matter. It was an immediate success, which accounts in part for its bibliographical complexity, and has been hailed as a book that ìwould last as long as the language, because it described the vices of man in all nationsî (D.N.B.). Vice not withstanding, and unintentionally, it has become not just a great satirical novel, but a juvenile classic as well.Grolier, 100 English, 42. Hubbard, pp. 15-17.         A catalogue of books printed for H. Curll, over-against Catherine-Street in the Strand

1726. (London), n.d. (1726). Drop-title. 8vo. 16pp. disbound. Edmund Curll (1675-1747) was a rather controversial person. According to Straus there never was a man who succeeded in irritating almost beyond endurance so many of his betters. And nothing could make him see the error of his ways: he just continued to irritate. If, for instance, objection was raised to some books of his of the bawdier kind, it would as likely as not be followed by another even more scandalously improper. If a furious author declared that a book of his, published by Curll, was wholly unauthorised, he would probably find that a second volume of his work was being advertised as corrected by the author himself. Occasionaly the bookseller went too far, and then there was trouble, sometimes wholly grotesque. He was frequently sued for libel and variously fined and even imprisoned for printing and publishing obscene and immoral books. In November 1725 Curll was once again found guilty and announced his retreat from bookselling. His son Henry was called on to step in the breach. Henceforth, it was decided things should continue much as it had been, except for an altered initial. That probably explains why this catalogue was printed for H. Curll rather than his father Edmund. Although officially he was retreated it was Edmund who ran the business. Straus dates this catalogue around 1726 or 1727: ... must, I think, have been issued either in the summer of 1726 or in the spring of 1727 [cf. Strauss, The Unspeakable Curll & Plomer, A dictionary of the printers and booksellers]. Scarce.

A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Glubbdubdrib, Luggnagg and Japan. Part IV. A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms.]

London: Printed for Benj. Motte, at the Middle Temple-Gate in Fleet-street, MDCCXXVI [1726]. 2 vols, 8vo, A-K8, L2, [-]1, 2[-]2, 2B-2L8, M2; pp. [i-v], vi-xvi, [1], 2-148; (6), [1], 2-164; engraved frontispiece and plates facing B1r and 2B1r. Vol. II: A3, B-K8, L4, M2, 2A4, 2B-2M8,N8, O4: (6), [1], 2-155, [156, blank]; (8), [1], 2-199, [200, blank]; engraved plates facing B1r, D4r, F5v, and 2B1r. 20th century full brown morocco, concentric central panels ruled in gilt, black and blind, gilt fleurons at corners, gilt backstrips a touch faded in (6) compartments, marbled endpapers. Gilt edges. Bookplate at the front (see below). The true first edition, Teerink A with all the first issue points. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Gulliver in the second state as usual. All six maps and plans present. Decorative woodcut and engraved head- and tailpieces throughout. Ã’GulliverÕs Travels has given Swift an immortality beyond temporary fameÉ the brilliance and thoroughness with which his logic and invention work out the piquancies of scale involved by the giant human among the Lilliputian and then by a mimikin Gulliver among the Brobdingnagians, ran away with the authorÕs original intentionsÓ (Printing and the Mind of Man, 185). Thus while Swift may have originally set out to write another of his razor-like satires, generations of readers including children love this book for the interminably entertaining story line. This copy was cleaned and rebound c. 1920, as books often were at that time, perhaps for Mrs. Poole. From the Caroline Boeing Poole Collection, sold by B.M. Rosenthal in 1977. Armorial bookplate bound in of Thomas Macro DD of Bury St Edmunds and Great Yarmouth (d.1743/4, aged 60); he was University Librarian at Cambridge so he might well have been an active book buyer and perhaps bought this copy when it was published as it is the rare first issue which was radically changed almost immediately after being published (see John Blatchly, Some Suffolk and Norfolk ex-libris. The Bookplate Society, 2000). Teerink 289. PMM 185. Rothschild 2104.

Sixty finely engraved plates. 8 p.l., 153 pp., [5] pp. Folio, cont. boards (a bit soiled & rubbed). Leipzig: C. Zunkel, 1726. First edition of one of the most important volumes in Leupold's series Theatrum Machinarum, or "Theater of Machines"; this was the most complete and richly illustrated work on engineering and machinery published, not just up until that time, but for many years to follow. "Leupold's treatise is the most comprehensive of all the early bridge books and the first to be published in Germany. It was inspired by Gautier's influential work and covers masonry, pontoon, floating and military bridges but is particularly notable for the material on long-span timber-truss bridges. Leupold writes with authority on this type of structure, of which there was a long tradition in Germany, taking as examples some recently-built bridges and making an attempt to illustrate the behaviour of beams and trusses and to describe the properties of timber; in this he follows Galileo and anticipates Buffon."Elton, Cat. 2, 58. Leupold (1674-1727), a Leipzig mechanical engineer, established a workshop to manufacture mathematical and mechanical instruments. His numerous books describe the latest technological developments of the day. Fine fresh copy. .

(4),XXXII,(4),468 pp. * First edition; with armorial bookplate of Thomas Lloyd. - 'Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the ship in a stom and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru and captured several small prices. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernàndez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao. Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left fort he Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct' (Hill p.554). 'From the Brazilian aspect, Shelvocke's voyage is of interest because he landed at Santa Catharina, and describes it at length in a special chapter' (Borba de Moraes p.796). 'In the map of the world California is shown as an island. Two of the plates represent male and female inhabitants of California. Shelvocke has the fullest accounts of California, the natives and other features, of any of the old voyagers' (Cowan p.212). Reissue ( containing an 8 page postscript ) of a detailed work on the treatment of various Abdominal Hernias ( or ruptures ) by the Glasgow Surgeon Robert Houstoun [ 1678 - 1734 ]. In 1701 he had removed a large growth or cyst from a 58 year old patient & thus performed the first ovariotomy, and in so doing achieved lasting fame. He would in 1724 be asked to give a lecture before the Royal Society in London on this operation, such was its importance. Here he gives a comprehensive account of the treatment of the hernia, ancient & modern with recipts and relates, with full credit, the details of the secret cure for Ruptures which was work of Katherine Bowles. The Postcript at the end rejects the claims of a Dr Littlejohn with regard the 'Secret' cure - Littlejohn had approached the Admiralty & passed off Bowles' cure as his own. She responded with a short work of her own [ 1726 ] and Houstoun here asks readers to decide who was the true inventor of the cure.
