He held shares in all the most important books that were issued and carried on a flourishing business until his death in 1738. (4),XXXII,(4),468 pp. * First edition; with armorial bookplate of Thomas Lloyd. - 'Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the ship in a stom and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru and captured several small prices. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernàndez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao. Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left fort he Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct' (Hill p.554). 'From the Brazilian aspect, Shelvocke's voyage is of interest because he landed at Santa Catharina, and describes it at length in a special chapter' (Borba de Moraes p.796). 'In the map of the world California is shown as an island. Two of the plates represent male and female inhabitants of California. Shelvocke has the fullest accounts of California, the natives and other features, of any of the old voyagers' (Cowan p.212). Selvocke's controversial narrative is probably best known as the inspiration behind the albatross incident in Coleridge's Rime of the ancient mariner (Howgego p.958). - (Title-page trimmed with loss of part of final line). - A clean copy. Reissue ( containing an 8 page postscript ) of a detailed work on the treatment of various Abdominal Hernias ( or ruptures ) by the Glasgow Surgeon Robert Houstoun [ 1678 - 1734 ]. In 1701 he had removed a large growth or cyst from a 58 year old patient & thus performed the first ovariotomy, and in so doing achieved lasting fame. He would in 1724 be asked to give a lecture before the Royal Society in London on this operation, such was its importance. Here he gives a comprehensive account of the treatment of the hernia, ancient & modern with recipts and relates, with full credit, the details of the secret cure for Ruptures which was work of Katherine Bowles. The Postcript at the end rejects the claims of a Dr Littlejohn with regard the 'Secret' cure - Littlejohn had approached the Admiralty & passed off Bowles' cure as his own. She responded with a short work of her own [ 1726 ] and Houstoun here asks readers to decide who was the true inventor of the cure.

Cadenus and Vanessa. A poem. By Dr. S-t

London: printed for N. Blandford; and sold by J. Peele, 1726 - A famous poem about the relationship between Swift and Esther Vanhomrigh ("Vanessa"), who died in 1723 and among whose papers a manuscript of the poem was found. It was first published in Dublin on about April 19, 1726, and a second edition followed shortly afterwards, adding ten "incriminating" lines; these two Dublin printings are very rare. On May 19 two rival editions, both unauthorized, appeared in London, this one, which follows the first Dublin printing, and one published by J. Roberts, which follows the second. Blandford went on to issue six more editions within the year, and Roberts several more as well. "This edition follows the text of the Dublin first edition and omits the additional ten lines" (Foxon) RARE. Neither of the first Blandford or Roberts printings has appeared at auction (in ABPC) since 1982 First Blandford edition. 8vo. 31 pp. Recent marbled boards. Very good. "Small 8vo, pp. [4], 25, [7]; later full calf, neatly rebacked, red morocco label lettered in gilt on spine; white library cloth in gutters of flyleaves. & & A Learned Dissertation is a political tract in which his Whiggish sentiments are obviously intended to be detected in spite of the veil of domestic terminology. ""A satirical imitation of [Ambrose] Philip's pretentious style of writing"" (Halkett & Laing, 2nd ed.). & & Part 2 is Namby Pamby: or, A panegyric on the new versification address'd to A-- P-- Esq.         Le nouveau miroir de la fortune ou abregé de la Geomance

COLONNA Francesco Maria Pompeo. Le nouveau miroir de la fortune ou abregé de la Geomance. A Paris, chez Andre? Cailleau, 1726. In 16mo; pp.10n.nn., 101, 3n.nn. Due tavole fuori testo. Mezza pergamena posteriore. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World

, 1726. 1726. first edition. First "AA" EditionIn A-1 Condition[SWIFT, Jonathan]. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships. London: Printed for Benj. Motte, 1726. First (Teerrick's AA) edition (second octavo edition), with all errata as noted by Teerick, issued "medio November 1726," not quite three weeks after the first octavo edition. Four parts in two octavo volumes (7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches; 191 x 117 mm.). xvi, 148; [6], 164; [6], 155, [1, blank]; [8], 199, [1, blank] pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Gulliver in the second state, with the inscription “Captain Lemuel Gulliver of Redriff. Ætat. suæ LVIII.” around the oval frame, the tablet below bearing a Latin inscription; five engraved maps, two for Part III (facing pp. [1] and 39) and one for each of the other Parts (facing p. [1]), and an engraved plate of symbols in Part III (facing p. 74). Decorative woodcut and typographic head- and tail-pieces and initials.Contemporary calf paneled in blind. With the bookplate of William 6th Baron Monson (1796-1862) . Spines expertly and almost invisibly restored. An unusually clean, attractive, and excellent copy."The first five editions of Gulliver's Travels were all published by Benjamin Motte. They form a group together, and give rise to the following observations:(1) A edition (1st 8vo edition), publ. 28 Oct. 1726.(2) AA edition (2d 8vo edition), publ. medio Nov. 1726.(3) B edition (3d 8vo edition), publ. Dec. 1726.(4) Second Edition (4th 8vo edition), publ. May 4, 1727(5) [Third Edition] (1st 12mo edition), with the year 1727 but published early in 1728.The first three editions, long considered different issues only, have been proved to be separate editions...This sequence has the advantage of being the conventional one. Pope, Swift, and Ford all meant the 1727 8vo edition when they spoke of the 'second' edition" (Teerink). In this, the "AA" edition, the general title to Volume II notes "second edition," and the special title to Part IV has "Voyage" in lower case; it is all in upper case in edition "A." Both volume I and volume II in this copy conform to Teerink's AA: the first volume is usually married with a Teerink B copy of volume II."Gulliver’s Travels, to use the popular title, is one of the greatest satires in the English language—or any language, for that matter. It was an immediate success, which accounts in part for its bibliographical complexity, and has been hailed as a book that “would last as long as the language, because it described the vices of man in all nations” (D.N.B.).“Gulliver’s Travels has given Swift an immortality beyond temporary fame…All those who had been fascinated by the realism and vivid detail of Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe were captivated again, even though they knew that Gulliver must be fiction. The brilliance and thoroughness with which his logic and invention work out the picquancies of scale involved by the giant human among the Lilliputians, and then by a minikin Gulliver among the Brobdingnagians, ran away with the author’s original intenation. Gulliver’s Travels has achieved the final apotheosis of a satirical fable, but it has also become a tale for children. For every edition designed for the reader with an eye to the historical background, twenty have appeared, abridged or adapted, for readers who care nothing for the satire and enjoy it as a first-class story” (Printing and the Mind of Man).
