Pomet, Pierre.
London, [William Bowyer] for R. and J. Bonwicke, and R. Wilkin [et al.], 1725. 4to. Two vols. in one. (24), 419, (9) pp. Title page printed in black and red. Text in double columns. With 86 numbered engr. plates (often with multiple images per plate). Old panelled calf, neatly rebacked to style with original gilt label laid down, leading edges gilt. Second edition in English, the first having appeared in two volumes in 1712. William Bowyer printed both this second edition (500 copies) and the 1737 third edition. The original French edition was published in 1694, and drew upon Pomet's own travels, as well as his expertise and business as a practicing pharmacist. Contains many notices of oriental medicinal plants and herbs, including the famous "Balsam of Mecca": "The Turks, who go a pilgrimage every year to Mecha, bring from thence a certain dry white balsam, in figure resembling white copperas calcin'd, especially when it is stale. The person who made me a present of about half an ounce, assur'd me, that he brought the same from Mecha liquid, and that the smell is the same as observ'd before. The same person likewise did testify to me that it was as good as Balm of Gilead" (p. 205). - Pomet (1658-99) was appointed druggist to Louis XIV, and in the introductory notes to the online exhibition at the University of Wales, "The Weird World of Pierre Pomet," the curator observes: "Parisian Pierre Pomet's pharmacopoeia [.] was intended not only as a handbook for the medical trade but also as a rough guide to the exotic for armchair travellers. Much of its appeal, then as now, come … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Christian LEOPOLD
Augsburg, 1725. In the wake of Jeremias Wolff’s bigger view, this work presents many topographical references. Leopold was a modest engraver and publisher in Augsburg; the series of city views, from which this one is taken, has been published in a very limited circulation, which means these works are very rare. Copperplat, in excellent condition. 300 200mm

Vesalius, Andreas =
1725. Dimensions : 7 5/8 in by 5 3/4 in. (194 x 145 mm) within the border 8 in by 5 7/8 in. (203 x 15 mm) including the border. As a technical achievement, this beautiful copperplate is altogether excellent. Wandelaar, whose best works are the anatomical plates which he engraved for the Tabula of Albinus, was a perfect master of his craft. But as a portraitist he was no more accurate than many another master-engraver at the beginning of the eighteenth century. He certainly aimed at making a true copy of the Woodcut nevertheless he has modified the shape of the head, which he has lengthened and heightened he has rendered the nose as longer, yet with less projection and with less character, and the beard as not only longer but smoother and more wavy. The female breast of the corpse, given with slight definition in the original, is here emphasized. The inscription-motto on the table-front : AN. JET. XXVIII MDXLII OCYVS IVCVNDE ET TVTO - is carefully reproduced, but the first two letters of jucunde are in part masked by the fingers of the demonstrator. The plate bears the name of the engraver in the lower left corner : J. Wandelaar fecit. Beneath is the inscription : Andreas Vesalius (Bruxellcnsis Invictissimi Caroli V. Imperatoris Medicus). Certain necessary modifications have been introduced in the inscription on the paper lying on the table, as already explained in our remarks on the large portrait-woodcut of the Fabrica. This plate, together with the reproduction in line by the artist of the title-page described later on, was engraved for the edition of the works of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Humphrey Prideaux (1648–1724) was an English churchman and orientalist, Dean of Norwich from 1702. His sympathies inclined to Low Churchism in religion and to Whiggism in politics. The Old and New Testament connected in the History of the Jews and Neighbouring Nations (1715–1724) was a significant work, of which many editions were brought out; it drew on James Ussher. It was among the earliest English works to use the term Vulgar Era, though Kepler used the term as early as 1635. It covered the historical interval between the Old and New Testaments, and led to a controversy between Prideaux and his cousin, Walter Moyle. Jean Le Clerc wrote a critical examination of it, which was published in English in 1722. The French translation was by Moses Solanus and Jean-Baptiste Brutel de la Rivière. Verrijk, Dirk (Haarlem 1734 - Den Haag 1786)
Skilful drawing of the village of Overschie seen from the water. At the centre the village church surrounded by several houses, several figures alongside the canal and a small sailing boat on the canal. The viewing point and composition used by Verrijk strongly resemble, but are not identical to, those of the etching that Abraham Rademaker made in 1725. Overschie used to be a municipality in the province of Zuid-Holland, but in 1941 it was annexed by Rotterdam. Pen and brush and grey ink with grey wash, over traces of pencil, on laid paper, 176 x 271 mm. Within ruled ink border. Watermark: French lily in crowned shield. Signed "d. Verrijk. del. ad. viv: 1761" in pen and grey ink on lower left, titled "Overt-Schie" in grey ink in lower middle and numbered "No. 2" in brown ink on lower right. Left edge partly pasted on old mount (numbered 69 and 1090 on recto, old price on verso: "f 3 - 5 1/2"), a few tiny, hardly noticeable foxing stains in sky area, overall in excellent condition.

Ignatian Devotions].
Graz, Widmanstetters Erben, 1725. - (10 [instead of 14?]), 320 pp. Bound in contemporary vellum with blindstamped ornaments on spine. Spine and boards rather sunned, rubbing to extremities; loss to lower quarter of velum spine, but binding holding perfectly. Ex-libris stamps and labels on verso of title and first two leaves. A worn copy of a rare survival. Rare prayer manual for the Marian Sodality at the Jesuit College of Graz, "offered as a present in the Jubilee Year 1725" to its 130 members, according to the title-page. Such sodalities, essentially fraternal organizations within the Jesuit educational umbrella, were common in the Early Modern period and constituted "one of the principal apostolic instruments of the Jesuits in the cities" (see below). The present manual presents a fascinating synthesis of Ignatian teachings with devotion to the Virgin Mary, as well as offering a brief picture of the organization and its members. - As the title-page states, the sodality numbered some 130 members, in addition to 111 deceased members and 11 who had taken orders. The text is a full manual of devotion to Ignatius, beginning with a dedication to the saint and moving onto a full calendar of prayers and reflections, one for each day of the year. Each day's entry consists of a quotation from Ignatius' writings or from others' accounts of him, followed by a brief exposition of that sentiment. July 18th, for example, is devoted to Ignatius' maxim "Cowardice only makes your demons bolder"; while on the 19th November the student in invited to consider a passage concerning temptation, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tagli colorati in verde. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
