Hinges with cracks and the skin partly flaked. Corners worn and nicked. A partly erased signature in the outer margin on titlepage. In conjunction to that, small holes have developed which have been mended later. Minor soiling in the upper margin on p. 48, a faded dampstain on pp. 165-66 and a larger one on pp. 175-87, plus a minimal repair in the lower part of the inner margin on p. 192. With Frederik Heyman's book plate and from the collection of Bent Juel in Oxford. Bibliotheca danica IV:565. Karen Brahe (1657-1736) received an exceptional education for a woman of her time and gathered a considerable library. In 1708 she moved to Østrupgaard on the island Funen in Denmark, where she lived her last 28 years, busy with literature and energetic husbandry. In 1716 she founded the noble "maidish convent" in Odense, to which she donated her valuable book collection, which to a greater extent was comprised of older Danish manuscripts and printed books plus German theology. Among the many manuscripts in the library is an important collection of folk songs and among the printed volumes are many of the oldest Danish books, some of which are unique copies. The collection is the oldest preserved Danish private library and probably one of the oldest libraries, collected by a woman, in the world. This catalogue lists the Danish books and contains a long introduction about the donator and the library. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A compleat history of druggs. To which is added, what is further observable on the same subject, from Mess. Lemery and Tournefort, divided into three classes, vegetable, animal and mineral; with their use in Physics, Chymistry, Pharmacy, and several other Arts.

London, [William Bowyer] for R. and J. Bonwicke, and R. Wilkin [et al.], 1725.. 4to. Two vols. in one. (24), 419, (9) pp. Title page printed in black and red. Text in double columns. With 86 numbered engr. plates (often with multiple images per plate). Old panelled calf, neatly rebacked to style with original gilt label laid down, leading edges gilt.. Second edition in English, the first having appeared in two volumes in 1712. William Bowyer printed both this second edition (500 copies) and the 1737 third edition. The original French edition was published in 1694, and drew upon Pomet's own travels, as well as his expertise and business as a practicing pharmacist. Contains many notices of oriental medicinal plants and herbs, including the famous "Balsam of Mecca": "The Turks, who go a pilgrimage every year to Mecha, bring from thence a certain dry white balsam, in figure resembling white copperas calcin'd, especially when it is stale. The person who made me a present of about half an ounce, assur'd me, that he brought the same from Mecha liquid, and that the smell is the same as observ'd before. The same person likewise did testify to me that it was as good as Balm of Gilead" (p. 205). - Pomet (1658-99) was appointed druggist to Louis XIV, and in the introductory notes to the online exhibition at the University of Wales, "The Weird World of Pierre Pomet," the curator observes: "Parisian Pierre Pomet's pharmacopoeia [...] was intended not only as a handbook for the medical trade but also as a rough guide to the exotic for armchair travellers. Much of its appeal, then as now, comes from the illustrations which pepper the book: pictures of weird animals and weird people doing weird things in weird countries." - Early bookplate ("IKJ") and ownership signature ("H. Jones), occasional dusting or minor offsetting. A very good, crisp copy. - ESTC T111989. Wellcome IV,142. Garrison-Morton 1827.1 (French ed.). Hunt II, 428 (1712 ed.).

Bibliotheca Duboisiana.

Four vols. bound in two. 8vo, cont. vellum over boards. The Hague: J. Swart & P. de Hondt, 1725. With its almost 30,000 lots this was the largest sale ever held in any country up to 1725, a record not broken until the Thott sale (Copenhagen: 1789-1795) and the Heber sales of the 1830s. The Du Bois sale lasted for nearly two months. This extraordinary library was the creation of the Abbé Jean-Paul Bignon (1662-1743), who was for many years secretary of the Académie des Sciences. When, in 1718, he was appointed Bibliothécaire du Roi, a position he occupied until 1741, he sold his library of approximately 50,000 volumes in order to avoid a conflict of interest. The buyer was the financier John Law (1671-1729), of "Mississippi Bubble" fame. Financial reversals caused Law to almost immediately resell the library for 50,000 livres to Cardinal Du Bois (1656-1723), the immensely rich but ill-famed first minister during the minority and under the reign of Louis XV (his misdeeds may have been exaggerated by the Duc de Saint-Simon who hated him). Guigard and others state that Law's sale of the library took place in 1723, but it cannot have been later than December 1720 when Law secretly left France after the Mississippi Bubble had burst. Following Du Bois's death, the library was sold for 65,000 livres to "the booksellers of Paris" who immediately sold it to one "Guiton," who, in turn, sent it to The Hague for auction. This library contained many famous rarities, including editiones principes of Aristophanes, Homer, and Pliny, incunabula printed on vellum, Spanish romances of chivalry, and illuminated manuscripts. Many of the finest books and manuscripts were acquired by a collector named Milsoneau. The Marquis de Paulmy acquired them from Milsoneau and today they are the foundation of the library of the Arsenal. Fine set. From the library of Christopherus, Abbot of Lucca, with his armorial bookplate. ❧ Guigard, I, pp. 238-39 & 270-71. Peignot, p. 96. Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 18, 102, 108, 113, 129, 207, 228, & 239. .

Dort stand er u.a. in Verbindung mit A.R.

Six folding engraved plates. 4 p.l., 118, [2] pp. Large 4to, cont. speckled sheep (spine a little worn, some rubbing), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Rollin, 1725. First edition of a very scarce book, published posthumously. Varignon (1654-1722), member of the Académie des Sciences and one of the outstanding scientists of his time, was an intimate friend of Newton, Leibniz, and the Bernoullis. The first French scientist of note to advocate the new differential calculus, he demonstrated the principle of the parallelogram of forces simultaneously with and independently of Newton. "In working with the model of falling bodies, Varignon encountered difficulties in obtaining acceleration as a second derivative. This problem had the advantage, however, of obliging him to reassess the importance of the new differential and integral calculus...He was among those who gave the most favorable reception to the publication of L'Hospital's Analyse des infiniment petits in 1696. The Éclaircissemens is composed of critical notes that Varignon, as a professor, considered necessary in presenting L'Hospital's pioneering work to young mathematicians."-D.S.B., XIII, p. 586. Very good copy. 18th-century ownership stamp on second preliminary leaf of "Dn. [illegible] Nicolas de Azara." This was Don José Nicolás de Azara (1730-1804), Spanish diplomat, collector of Italian antiquities, and patron of the arts. .

[Vienna or Venice?], 1785. 8vo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page. Contemporary blue-grey marbled wrappers.

Pollio, p. 119; Rives Childs, Casanoviana XXXII.2 (p. 74); WorldCat (3 copies this edition, 3 another ed. & 2 ambiguous). One of the rare first two Italian editions (apparently by the same printer, priority uncertain) of an interesting diplomatic pamphlet by Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798), world famous for his romantic and sexual adventures with numerous noble women. In the years 1772 to 1776 the Venetian Zannovich brothers successfully defrauded two Dutch merchants in a complicated swindle with bills of exchange, cargos of non-existent ships and uncovered debts. Amsterdam officials found Venice's failure to take action against the perpetrators exasperating and believed that a Venetian diplomat had abetted the brothers. This was the situation when Casanova stepped in and attempted to influence public opinion by writing at least three pamphlets about the incident in 1784 and 1785. He exposed the perpetrators and argued that the Venetian diplomat was another ignorant victim of their fraud. Very good copy. The wrapper is slightly faded near the spine, where it also has a couple small holes. Rare example of Casanova's skills in the seduction of disputing governments rather than women.

Nova Anglia Septentrionali Americæ implantata Anglorumque coloniis florentissima.

1725 - Nuremberg, c.1725. Original body colour. 495 x 600mm. Decorative map of New England, with Lake Champlain much too large. This map appeared at a time of high emigration from Germany to the Americas: it has been suggested that the large title cartouche, showing an Indian trading with a European surrounded by the wealth of the Americas, was an attempt to persuade more emigrés to seek their fortunes in the New World.

A manuscript plane titled "A Short Tretis of Salt mad(e) from Brine raised by the Sun Pan and Embodyed by Fire", setting out in detail how to place, set out and make the Pan work, together with economic advice on how to make it work.

No place c 1725 - 4to., 7 pages (approx. 2500 words), written in a neat sloping hand with tables, has been slightly cropped where it has at some time been bound with other pieces, but the slight loss of text can be deciphered. A manuscript treatise regarding the processing of sea salt harvested at 'Lemmington' (i.e. Lymington in the New Forest) and near Portsmouth at Portsea Island. The unidentified author sets out in detail how to select a site, how to set it up and run it with good advice on the means of making the pan pay with some sample economic tables. The principle purpose of the proposal was to improve the supply of salt to the fishing industry. The writer's final paragraph encourages the use of these pans: 'We have too long neglected to work on these Golden Miles of Ours that our mighty home Fishery Round Great Britain & Ireland wch in a few years successfully carry'd on According to Capt. Laycock's Proposal or late Plan will exceed All the Fisherys in Europe & in short time make His Majesties Kingdoms Impregnable!' It is of interest to compare what is detailed here with the descriptions of salt mining in Lymington written during visits to the town by Celia Fiennes (c. 1695) and Daniel Defoe (c. 1725). The last of Lymington's 'salt houses' closed in 1865. The reference to Capt. Laycock relates to a rare tract recorded in ESTC as "The proceeding of Martin Laycock, Esq. towards obtaining a Charter of Incorporation for a grand State Fishing Company" (c. 1721) (Columbia University copy only).

Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Index not present. A good copy of this important auction catalogue. One of the most important French eighteenth century auction catalogues, compiled by Gabriel Martin and considered the best of the many catalogues he compiled. It consists of 4414 lots, and includes manuscripts, maps, fine bindings and has significant holdings in history. According to Bléchet the principal buyers were Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, and Karl Heinrich, comte d'Hoym; unsold lots were retained by Du Fay's son. Charles-Jérome de Cisternay du Fay (1662-1723) was a Captain of the "Gardes Françaises" who devoted himself to collecting books after suffering severe wounds in the bombardment of Brussels in 1695 that made it impossible for him to continue his function, in fact he lost a leg. He bought from all the leading booksellers in Europe and formed a magnificent collection that was one of the richest of his times. It was often consulted by scholars who needed a particular and rare work. Copy with the portrait that is often lacking. [c.f. Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 2360. Larson Swedish commentators on America 296. Sabin A dictionary of books relating to America 31616: "Very scarce".

Dort stand er u.a. in Verbindung mit A.R.
