The extremely scarce first edition only had seven folding plates and the three woodcuts, and "there were but few copies printed, and most of them lost in the fire of London" (Lowndes, 1225). Some occasional foxing, else fine. Lacks the overall title page printed in red and black. Folio (13-1/2 inches tall). Three volumes in one. Collates to Fowler, p. 130-131, except frontispiece in vol. I and dedication to Charles II misbound Illustrated in vol. I - engraved frontispiece of Jones, eleven folded plates, three in text drawings. Vol. II - engraved frontispiece of Charleton and one engraved plate. Vol. III - one woodcut and ten engravings rebound to period in full brown morocco, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt, new marbled endpapers & Inigo Jones was an (1573-1652) English architect whose father was a clothworker in the neighbourhood of St. Paul's in London, and raised a Catholic. Little is known of the first thirty years of his life. Towards the end of the sixteenth century he went to Italy and lived there for many years, principally in Venice. Christian IV, King of Denmark, induced him to leave Italy and accept an appointment at the Danish Court. Buildings are named both in Italy and Denmark as having been designed by Jones, but seemingly without proof. He returned to England in 1601, and for some time was engaged in designing the costly scenery and machinery of the court masques. About 1614 he again went to Italy and amongst other things studied the style of Renaissance architecture known as Palladian. On his return to England he was appointed surveyor to the king. Jones designed the queen's house, Greenwich, the banqueting house, Whitehall, St. Paul's church and the piazza of Covent Garden (burnt to the ground 1795), and many other buildings. Of his genius as an architect there can be no question, nor can there be any as to his vast influence on the course of architecture in England; but as to the quality of his work and the effect of his influence, opinions differ very widely. His theory of architecture was that "it should be solid, proportional according to the rules, masculine and unaffected". Much of his work, however, is classed as theatrical and his designs were never truly classical. & & & That Stonehenge was a Roman circular temple in Tuscan order dedicated to Coelum, the god of the heavens, was Inigo Jones's response to King James I's inquiry (1620), and appeared in a posthumous publication (1655) by John Webb, which drew extensively from mythology, history, and astrology. Jones's Stonehenge interpretation was an important part of his grand vision Coelum Britannicum, a congratulatory symbolism for the monarch, which drew a macro- and microcosm parallel between the heavens and Britain. This particular symbolism was favored by the architect for a number of reasons: it presented a specific geometrical scheme and therefore turned immediately into an architectural form; and as a consequence it let the architect take an ideal position in relation to the monarch, that is, the supplier of his wisdom. Binding worn and repaired by an amateur (a sturdy repair), leather rubbed and scuffed, shelf wear to edges, hinges cracked, but holding firmly, inner hinges repaired with binder's linen tape, plates have pale age-browning, occasional foxing to text but mostly clean, pastedowns and endpapers age-browned, title page has pale age-browning, 2 pages have small loss to lower corners, not affecting text, 4 closed tears to margins neatly repaired, not affecting image, 1 small repair to inner margin of 1 plate just running into the image, small paper loss from 1 margin (paper fault), light mark to upper margions, otherwise a good copy.         Totius Neobelgii nova et accuratissima Tabula

      Amsterdam: Ottens Brothers, 1725. A MAP OF NEW ENGLAND CONTAINING THE FAMOUS "RESTITUTIO" VIEW Copper-plate engraving with original hand color: plate size 181/2" x 213/4" Reference: Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 476-477. This map is one of five that closely follows the Visscher Novii Belgii. It is a magnificent version of Hugo Allard's edition published by the Ottens brothers, after their purchase of Allard's plate in 1708, and shows the famous "Restitutio" view of New York. In 1664, the English successfully captured New Amsterdam and renamed it New York. The Dutch were entirely unable to rival the English, but for one brief episode between 1673 and 1674 when they recaptured the city and renamed it New Amsterdam. It was then that this updated version of Visscher's map was first engraved replacing the inset view of New York with what became dubbed the "Restituto" view. The inset celebrated the 'restoration' of New Amsterdam to Holland, in August 1673, by the fleet under the command of Cornelius Evertsen. The figure on the pedestal is holding a laurel of victory, while the updated glimpse at the southern tip of Manhattan shows a city that has grown significantly, and is a triumphant indication of Dutch pride in its recapture. Unlike the Visscher view, here the town is depicted from the east. On the right-hand side of the view is part of the wall that became Wall Street, with its guardhouse and gate. To its right are new settlements that were just beginning to crop up north of the wall. This view actually shows the Dutch capture of the town in progress, with soldiers marching along the quay and a cannon firing from the fort. Despite the fact that the city was returned to the British under the Treaty of Breda the following year, this map with the "Restitutio" view continued to be published for almost a century by Dutch mapmakers, perhaps for reasons of nostalgic national pride. By this time, Dutch overseas power was waning, particularly in America. This view, with its grandiose presentation of momentary triumph, played to the need for some affirmation of Dutch colonial power even in the face of overwhelming evidence to its demise.. Book.

      A Bettesworth, London, 1725. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. This copy was rebound in 1956 in half leather over cloth boards with gilt titled label to spine. There is some light rubbing to extremities of spine but is otherwise very clean and tightly bound. This copy lacks the copper plates and map and has some inscriptions and annotations by original owner and a neat signature of a more recent owner on the new first end paper. The contents are lightly browned with some light finger marks and foxing, otherwise an overall clean sound copy given its age. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 205 pages. .. Quantity Available: 1. Antica segnatura ai frontespizi. Frontespizi con fregi ornamentali dai quali è stato asportato il margine bianco laterale verso il taglio anteriore, grandi capilettera e finali figurati incisi in legno. Alla fine di diversi capitoli piccole vignette di gusto popolare incise in legno. A p. 132 del II tomo Stemma dei Trinci. In pergamena coeva a quattro scomparti con leggere nervature. Titolo e indicazione del tomo manoscritti. Tagli spruzzati. Alla fine dell?opera, il primo volume ha ?varie lezioni del codice bolognese? ed infine l?elenco degli Accademici Rinvigoriti di Foligno. Il secondo volume contiene invece le Annotazioni dell?Artigiani, le Osservazioni storiche del Pagliarini, le Dichiarazioni di Giovan Battista Boccolini, anch?esso Accademico Rinvigorito con l?elenco delle opere citate ed infine la Dissertazione Apologetica di Antonio Canneti. Soprattutto in quest?ultima sono riportate notizie sull?opera di cui viene fatta un?analisi quasi filologica in una serie di paragrafi, tra i quali si possono segnalare quello sulle antiche edizioni dell?opera che vide la luce a Perugia nel 1481 coi tipi di Stefano Arns, quello sull?inizio della stampa a Foligno e Perugia, quelli dedicati all?autore dell?opera e alla sua identificazione con il Frezzi. Federico Frezzi, nacque alla metà del XIV secolo a Foligno e dopo essere entrato fra i Domenicani, professore di Teologia a Firenze, Pisa e Bologna, venne nominato Vescovo di Foligno nel 1403. Morì a Costanza in Germania nel 1416 durante i lavori del Concilio che doveva concludere lo scisma d?occidente, al quale partecipava. L?opera narra in quattro libri il viaggio dell?autore attraverso quattro regni - da cui il titolo ? quello dell?Amore, quello di Satana, dei Vizi e delle Virtù. Il tutto nella celebrazione dei Trinci sotto la cui signoria era in quel momento Foligno. Ai Trinci è dedicato il capitolo XVIII del I libro Dove si tratta del reggimento della Casa de?Trinci, e della Città di Foligno, tanto da far risalire la casata ad un mitico Tros che da Troia sarebbe giunto nella terra fra Topino e Timia e che avrebbe fondato un?altra Troia, un luogo chiamato or Trieve. Buona edizione dedicata a Papa Benedetto XIII dagli Accademici Rinvigoriti di Foligno di quest?opera unanimemente considerato la migliore imitazione della Divina Commedia. Pompeo Campana iniziò la sua attività di tipografo nel 1705 ed appena tre anni dopo venne riconosciuto come ?stampatore pubblico? e quindi nel 1728 aggiunse anche l?indicazione di Stamperia Camerale. Alla sua morte nel 1743 l?attività della tipografia continuò fino al 1781, data dell?ultima pubblicazione edita a Foligno. Tra la sua produzione oltra al primo lunario conosciuto col titolo di Barbanera del 1762, anche gli Avvisi che, iniziati nel 1706, divennero nel 1776 la Gazzetta Universale che continuò ad essere edita a Foligno fino al 1783. Continuò ad essere poi edita sempre colsuo nome ad Asisi da Ottavio Sgariglia che del Campana aveva sposato una figlia. Cecchini G., Mostra dell?arte della stampa umbra, 1943, p. 30, n. 97. Er schuf unter dem Herzog von Savoyen das anatomische Theater von Turin. Als Autor sollte er nicht mit dem gleichnamigen, meist unter dem Pseudonym Janus Plancus schreibenden Arzt aus Rimini verwechselt werden. - Vorsätze mit Leimschatten. Vereinzelte Stockflecken. Einband leicht fleckig. Dekorativ gebundenes Exemplar.

Vellum-covers restored and somewhat soiled. Endpapers renewed. A large-margined copy. 2 hal-ftitles. Titl-epages printed in red and black with engraved title-vignettes. Engraved pictorial frontispiece. (38),-572;-(6),-577-1186 pp. (complete). Engraved portrait of Vesalius and 79 engraved plates (Numb. 1-79), 38 textengravings of varying sizes and 17 wood-engravings in the text. (Some copies seem to be collated as having 81 plates, but most library-copies show 78 and some 80). Small tears to a few plates. Some quires a bit browned, some light scattered brownspots. First and only collected edition of the printed works by "the father of human anatomy". "The first volume is taken up by Vesalius' landmark work "De humani corporis fabrica, 1543", a work that marked the beginnings of the period of rationalism in medicine. It rates with Corpernicus' "De revolutuinibus" which was published the same year. Vesalius showed, that man's structure is of one and the same materials as the bodies of lower animals. In his book the human body is fully described. On the title-page there is a picture of Vesalius, dissecting and lecturing while surrounded by students and others." (Sparrow: Milestones 192). "The fabrica" is considered the greatest work ever published on human anatomy. "In itself, for what it contains, but still more for what it did, the "Humani corporis fabrica" is one of the great books of the world, with which in the literature of Medicine only the 'De motu cordis' of Harvey is to be compared. The one revolutionized anatomy, the other created modern physiology." (Osler) - Few men in medical history have dominated their subject or their epoch as did Vesalius. The history of Anatomy is divided into three periods:the pre-Vesalian, The Vesalian, and the post-Vesalian period - a tribute to the genius of this great anatomist. (Hagelin in :Medical Books from the library of The Karolinska Institute).The editor of this Opera Omnia was Boerhaave, an extremely influential teacher of medicine in 18th-century Leiden. In an effort to reconcile recent medical discoveries with those of previous centuries, he prepared new editions of a number of the classical medical texts. Among these were the works of Vesalius, on which he worked in collaboration with his younger colleague, the anatomist Bernhard Siegfried Albinus. This edition includes apart from "De fabrica" (in volume one) and the "Epitome" (in volume two), the "China-root Letter", Vesalius's response to the "Anatomical Observations" of Gabriele Fallopio, and the "Chirurgia magna" attributed to the great anatomist. The care with which Vesalius' illustrations were produced indicates that they were regarded as still having scientific value two centuries after their first publication. Since the survival of the woodblocks was unknown to Boerhaave, the present edition is illustrated with engraved plates copied from the printed woodcuts by Jan Wandelaar, who was also responsible for the illustrations of Albinus' own anatomical atlas.(Norman 28,29). - PMM: 71 (1543-edition) - Horblitt: 98 (1543-edition) - Dibner, Heralds: 122 (1543-edition)
