Paris: Chez Nyon, Fils, Quay del Augustins 1725 - Contemporary full leather binding, with 6 raised bands to the spine. 5 panels decorated with gilt devices, and the 6th with a burgundy and gilt label. Marbled end papers. Complete with 34 folding plates. There is a curious vandalism to the title page and dedication page. An early owner has crossed out the name of Le Duc du Maine, who the book was dedicated to, and has coloured in portions of the Duc’s crest. In the same ink is written "La livre ma coute 15 denier" (my book which cost 15 denier). To the following page (the dedication) again the Duc’s crest has been defaced, along with his name, and several of the titles which pertained to him. The Duc was the legitimised son of Louis XIV, but despite this, was disliked by many who still considered him a bastard. The boards and spine are clean, A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with a touch of the cover rubbed. Inside, the book and plates are clean and tidy other than the sabotage to the Duc! Belidor (1698 - 1761) was a Frenchman born in Catalonia, an artillery professor at La Fère, whose work on artillery, engineering and hydraulics was widely disseminated in the 18th century.         Bibliotheca Fayana, seu Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae…de Cisternay Du Fay…digestus & descriptus a Gabriele Martin…cum Indice Auctorum alphabetico

Paris: G. Martin, 1725.One of the finest French 18th-century collections; the sale catalogue of the library of Charles Jérôme de Cisternay Du Fay (1662-1723), is considered to be the best of those compiled by Gabriel Martin, who made Paris the international center for the sale of rare books by auction. Du Fay, after losing his leg in the bombardment of Brussels in 1695, retired from the military and devoted the rest of his life to collecting rare books and manuscripts. Buying from all the leading dealers in Europe, he formed a superb museum of literary rarities. Du Fay was advised by his friend and notable book collector Michel Brochard, professor at the Collège Mazarin, who was the author of the notice in Latin preceding the catalogue. Du Fay became an outstanding connoisseur, a friend of eminent savants and authors, including Fontenelle, and was in contact with the best booksellers of Europe. Many of his books ultimately found their way to Count d'Hoym.Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. 4414 lots, including early MSS. and bindings. Strabbe]. acht delen. Amsterdam: J.A. Crajenschot, 1792-1803.

Half leer, ca 3000 p., ill. Goed exemplaar.

Genoa: Matheo Garvizza, 1725. First edition of this commentary, which covers the reign of King Philip V of Spain and The War of the Spanish Succession. Octavo, 2 volumes, contemporary tree calf, morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. First editions are rare. Vicente Bacallar y Sanna, Marquis of Saint Philip and Viscount of Fuentehermosa, (February 6 1669 - The Hague (Netherlands), June 11 1726) was a Sardinian nobleman, military officer, linguist, historian, politician and ambassador of the Spanish Empire. He was born to a noble Sardinian family when the kingdom of Sardinia was part of the Spanish crown. He was appointed by Charles II of Spain governor of the Cape of Cagliari and Gallura and military governor of Sardinia. During the war of the Spanish succession, when Sardinian aristocracy divided between Philip of Anjou (of the house of Bourbon) and Charles of Habsburg, Bacallar was loyal to the heir designated by Charles II, Philip of Anjou, who became king as Philip V. Due to his loyalty, the king awarded him as Marquis of Saint Philip and Viscount of Fuentehermosa (Fuente Hermosa de Miranda, fief in the kingdom of Navarre) in 1709. When the kingdom of Sardinia surrendered to Archduke Charles, he had flee to Spain, without giving up the hope to re-conquerer Sardinia. The treaty of Utrecht (1714), where he had been part of the Spanish delegation, decided for Sardinia to be part of the Austrian crown. Bacallar dedicated to a strong intellectual activity: in 1713 he founded - with other intellectuals - the Real Academia Espanola, where he helped create its first dictionary, that would be published in 1726. He wrote the short poem Las Tobias (The Tobies, 1709), the poem El Palacio de Momo (Momo's Palace, 1714), the treaty Monarchia Hebrea (The Hebrew Monarchy, 1719) and historical works, such as Description geographique, historique et politique du royaume de Sardaigne (Geographical, historical and political description of the Kingdom of Sardinia). Regarding the war of the Spanish succession he wrote Commentarios de la guerra de Espana y historia de su Rey Phelipe V el Animoso desde el principio de su regnado hasta la paz general del ano 1725 (Commentaries of the war of Spain and history of its King Philip V the Brave since the beginning of his kingdom to the general peace of the year 1725, 1726). In this work, asked by his monarch, the Marquis intended to inform about the facts happened in and outside Spain during the war objectively. His objectiveness is proved by the respect used with regard to both parties. Doubtless, the work was not appreciated by the power and the first edition - published in Genoa - was pulled from the market. In 1724 he was appointed as ambassador in the Netherlands, with the aim of convincing them to remain neutral, where he died two years after due to a stroke. He left a library of sixteen-thousands volumes.

Cura Animae, per Scintillas Ignatianas, sive S. Ignatij Soc. Jesu Fundatoris, Apophthegmata Sacra Divino Amore Succensae. Almae, ac Venerabili Sodalitati Majori B. M. V. ab Angelo salutatae, & sine labe originali conceptae in Academico Soc. Jesu Collegio Graecij erectae, & confirmatae. Pro Xenio oblata, Anno Jubileo MDCCXXV.

Graz, Widmanstetters Erben, 1725. - (10 [instead of 14?]), 320 pp. Bound in contemporary vellum with blindstamped ornaments on spine. Spine and boards rather sunned, rubbing to extremities; loss to lower quarter of velum spine, but binding holding perfectly. Ex-libris stamps and labels on verso of title and first two leaves. A worn copy of a rare survival. Rare prayer manual for the Marian Sodality at the Jesuit College of Graz, "offered as a present in the Jubilee Year 1725" to its 130 members, according to the title-page. Such sodalities, essentially fraternal organizations within the Jesuit educational umbrella, were common in the Early Modern period and constituted "one of the principal apostolic instruments of the Jesuits in the cities" (see below). The present manual presents a fascinating synthesis of Ignatian teachings with devotion to the Virgin Mary, as well as offering a brief picture of the organization and its members. - As the title-page states, the sodality numbered some 130 members, in addition to 111 deceased members and 11 who had taken orders. The text is a full manual of devotion to Ignatius, beginning with a dedication to the saint and moving onto a full calendar of prayers and reflections, one for each day of the year. Each day's entry consists of a quotation from Ignatius' writings or from others' accounts of him, followed by a brief exposition of that sentiment. July 18th, for example, is devoted to Ignatius' maxim "Cowardice only makes your demons bolder"; while on the 19th November the student in invited to consider a passage concerning temptation, from the Spiritual Exercises. At the end is found an 'Appendix pro Cultu Gloriosissimi S. Patriarchae Ignatii' celebrating the order and with further prayers for the saint. - "Members of the academies and Sodalities comprised an elite echelon in the college and were the object of special attention on the part of the faculty. Except on class days members of the Sodalities took part in apostolic and religious activities in the city and environs-catechism classes for young children, performances of skits from Bible stories or lives of the saints, recitation of prayers in front of religious statues, especially of their patron, the Virgin Mary, participation in processions, and other manifestations of religious instruction and devotion. The movement expanded beyond the students in the colleges to other social groups, and it became one of the principal apostolic instruments of the Jesuits in the cities." (Luce Giard, "The Jesuit College A Center for Knowledge, Art, and Faith 1548-1773" in Studies in the Spirituality of Jesuits Vol 40 (2008). Giard further notes that "whether in gatherings of students or adults, the Sodality had its own collection of devotional literature. For Sodality purposes Jesuits produced spiritual publications in a variety of genres. In the middle of the seventeenth century the Major Sodality [of the B. V. M.] adopted the custom of producing a New Year book each year, which was distributed to all the members". The present Scintillas Ignatianas are most likely an example of such a 'New Year's gift'. - An ephemeral publication surely printed in no more than a few hundred copies, this work is unrecorded in OCLC or KvK, and untraced in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek. Graff 1333 (citing 7 ff. of preliminaries). Peinlich 94. Simoniti 903. Andritsch (Studenten) 287. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Student's Companion: or, the Reason of the Laws of England.

London: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, for T. Corbett,, 1725. Shewing, the principal reasons and motives whereon our laws and statutes are grounded, in the most essential and capital points, not only in civil but criminal cases; Together with the law it self. So as to convey to all students, and others, the fundamental knowledge of the law, necessary in their studies. Octavo (193 x 114 mm). Contemporary calf, recent red label period style, two-line blind border on sides, blind swag-and-pendant border at inner edge of both sides. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper: "Ambrose Dawson puchased from Dr Hodsons Library". Ambrose Dawson (1707-1794), physician; 20th-century bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and bibliophile, whose main library of naval history was complemented by a subsidiary of collection of eighteenth-century literature in well-preserved contemporary bindings. Extremities of spine and corners worn, front joint cracked but sound, back joint partially cracked, dampstain to front endpapers, some foxing but overall this remains an appealing copy in period calf. First edition. Giles Jacob (bap. 1686-1744), "the leading legal writer of his age, was less notable for his style... than for the variety of his work. Jacob was prolific, and some of his efforts aimed to reach relatively new markets. The Students Companion, or, Reason of the Law... like Jacob's The Common Law Common-Placed (1726), were among a growing number of printed books intended to help law students with their studies. The Students Companion organized and digested statutes and cases, while The Common Law Common-Placed served as a ready commonplace book and reference guide for legal terms. The latter also attracted critics who felt that printed study aids took away the useful work of manual notetaking" (Yale Law School, Taussig Collection online). Jacob had a notable spat with Alexander Pope and the law writer's stylistic shortcomings were highlighted in The Dunciad Variorum (1729): "Jacob, the scourge of Grammar, mark with awe, / Nor less revere him, blunderbuss of Law". Decidedly uncommon: ESTC locates copies at only four British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Scotland, Cambridge, Ireland) and OCLC adds another six locations worldwide.

The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile, Kt ,

London: printed for J. Woodman, D. Lyon and C. Davis,, 1725. Which treateth of the Way to Hierusalem; and of Marvayhles of Inde, with other Ilands and Countryes. Now publish'd entire from an Original MS. in the Cotton Library. Octavo (229 x 135 mm). Mid 19th-century green morocco, titles to spine decorated gilt in compartments, decorative gilt frames to covers, edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers. Title page printed in red and black. Spine faded, boards slightly sprung, occasional faint foxing; an excellent copy. Second edition in English. The Voyages de Jehan de Mandeville chevalier first appeared in manuscript in France c.1357. The first edition in English was printed in 1499; in 1725 this new edition was prepared from the Cotton manuscript in the British Museum, printed by William Boyer in an issue of 350 copies, establishing the standard English text. Now known to have been confected from a variety of earlier sources, the Travels purports to be the personal account of Sir John Mandeville, born and bred in St Albans, who left England in 1322 and travelled the world for many years, serving the sultan of Cairo and visiting the Great Khan, and finally in 1357 in age and illness setting down his account of the world. That account covers his travels to the Middle East and Palestine in the first part, before he continues to India, Tibet, China, Java, and Sumatra, then returns westward via Arabia, Egypt and North Africa. Mandeville "enjoyed widespread popularity in the fifteenth century and was respected by scholars and cartographers, Columbus among them, who consulted it as a reliable source on the Far East" (Howgego). From the library of Irish judge and discerning book collector William O'Brien (1832-99), which was endowed on his death to the Milltown Park Jesuit Library, Dublin. This copy bears his post-mortem bookplate and the Milltown Park library ticket and bequest label to the front pastedown.

        Hiersolyma. Jerusalem

In the wake of Jeremias Wolff’s bigger view, this work presents many topographical references. Leopold was a modest engraver and publisher in Augsburg; the series of city views, from which this one is taken, has been published in a very limited circulation, which means these works are very rare. Copperplat, in excellent condition. Dimensioni 300 200mm
