CONNANUS FRANCISCUS
ex officina typographica Antonii Tivano. Veneunt apud Franciscum Antonium Perazzo, 1724. Due volumi di cm. 37,5, pp. (36) 374; (18) 400. Frontespizi in rosso e nero. Cfr. Iccu; Sapori, 708..

Fiddes, Richard.
Fiddes, Richard. The Life of Cardinal Wolsey. London: Printed for John Barber, 1724. [4], lv, [1], 534, 260 pp. Illus. with seven copper plate engravings and one in-text engraving. Folio. Cloth. First edition. With a list of subscribers. Illustrations include portrait frontispieces of Fiddes, portrait of Wolsey, the Magdalen College Tower; two further portraits: of Bishop Tunstall and Bishop Fox, the House Of Lords; Christ Church College, Oxford (dbl. page); two views of Christ Church interiors; plus in-text engraving of coins. In this work, Fiddes ... "it attempted to vindicate Wolsey's memory from the obloquy which had persistently pursued it, and also that it took a view of the Reformation less unfavourable to the mediaeval church than that of most Protestant writers. Fiddes was immediately attacked both by the press and in the pulpit. He had been faithful to the Earl of Oxford after his fall, and had frequently visited him in prison; further, in the preface to the ' Life of Wolsey,' he said that Atterbury had offered him the opportunity of writing it in his house, and he paid a warm tribute to Atterbury's abilities. It therefore suited Atterbury's assailants to accuse Fiddes of popery, and represent him as employed by Atterbury to write his work," DNB XIX, 398. ESTC T76228. Lowndes 796. A very good or better copy, modern rebinding, leaves very bright, small chip to lower margin of frontis else plates sharp and clean, overall contents near fine. South Church at Eastham
Printed by Tho. Fleet in Pudding-Lane, near the Town-House, where all sorts of Printing may be had well done and cheap, 1724. Boston: Printed by Tho. Fleet in Pudding-Lane, near the Town-House, where all sorts of Printing may be had well done and cheap..., 1724. 56pp. Bound in 19th century marbled boards and quarter calf [rebacked]. Trimmed a bit closely from time to time, but without affecting any text. Very Good. This rare pamphlet is a demonstration of grass-roots democracy in early New England churches. The South Church explains "how untruly and unfairly we have been represented to the World." In 1718 the South Church hired Reverend Osborn. Justice John Doane of Billingsgate, along with "three Male and fourteen Female Members," filed a written Protest. The Protest, says the South Church, "was somewhat surprising to all, that a Company of Women should rise up at this juncture of Time...It's not usual for Candidates for the Ministry, to go to Women either for Approbation or Recommendation to that great Work." Most of the Protest's signers recanted "and made their Peace with the Church." In fact, the Protest was a stealthy attempt, "in an occult private manner," to establish a rival Church at Billingsgate. By such deceit "these poor Members were stumbled." Of the Protest's signers, only four women failed to recant. The Church asked them to explain their "disorderly walking." The Meeting occurred "with all Moderation and Gentleness." Mrs. Hannah Doane failed to appear. Instead, she spread lies [reflecting her "unchristian Behaviour"] and called for the convenin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erasmus
London: J Wilford, 1724. Good: Illustrations intact including fold outs; cover off but present. "In Praise of Folly" is perhaps Erasmus' most popular and enduring work. Written at a low point in his life, this was written to entertain his good friend, Thomas More. Much of it is ironic commentary on the state of the Church at the time. It was translated into several languages including English. This particular translation, while not the first, contains many illustrations "from the Designs of the celebrated Hans Holbeine." Including Several Fold Outs intact and in very good condition. Translated by W. Kennett of S. Edm. Hall, Oxon. Now Lord Bishop of Peterborough. Good Condition: 12mo, front board off but present, some scuffing to the top and bottom of spine, pretty impressed design of rectangle in center with little triangle motifs surrounding while each corner has a tulip shape facing out from the edge of an impressed border, repeated on both boards. Spine has gilt bands and lettering spelling title and author along with date. Illustrations, both fold outs and in-text along with full page including portrait of Erasmus at front. It looks like Sir Thomas has been removed as it is neatly cut away across from Erasmus. "Moriae Encomium or, The Praise of Folly. Made English from the Latin of Erasmus. By W. Kennett of S. Edm Hall, Oxon, now Lord Bishop of Peterborough. Adorn'd with forty six copper Plates and the Effigies of Erasmus and Sir Thomas More: all neatly engraved from the designs of the celebrated Hans Holbeine".
