Artist: Homann Erben ( - 1780 ) Nürnberg; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca 1761. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Printed on 4 sheets joined together, folds partly restored; - size (in cm): 78 x 113,5; - description : Decorataive and big wall map of total Hessen with its bordering counties and the cities of Kassel, Allendorf, Eschwege, Eisenach, Schmalkalden, Frankenau and many others. With two decorative cartouches. In the 12th century, Hessengau was passed to Thuringia. In the War of the Thuringian Succession (1247?1264), Hesse gained independence and became a Landgraviate within the Holy Roman Empire. It shortly rose to primary importance under Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous, who was one of the leaders of German Protestantism. After Philip's death in 1567, the territory was divided among his four sons from his first marriage into four lines: Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel), Hesse-Darmstadt, Hesse-Rheinfels, and the also previously existing Hesse-Marburg. As the latter two lines died out quite soon (1583 and 1605), Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt were the two core states within the Hessian lands. Several collateral lines split off during the centuries, such as in 1622, when Hesse-Homburg split off from Hesse-Darmstadt. In the late 16th century, Kassel adopted Calvinism, while Darmstadt remained Lutheran and subsequently the two lines often found themselves on different sides of a conflict, most notably in the disputes over Hesse-Marburg and in the Thirty Years' War, when Darmstadt fought on the side of the Emperor, while Kassel sided with Sw … [Click Below for Full Description]

Band vollständig! Tome complet! [Click Below for Full Description]

DEIDIER Antoine
His accessit materia medica. Monspelii, anno 1724. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cheyne, George.
Printed for George Strahan ... and J. Leake, 1724. Cheyne (1673-1743), a native of Methlick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and a disciple of Dr. Archibald Pitcairn, was professor of medicine at Edinburgh and a follower of Pitcairn's iatromathematical school of medical science. Cheyne's several medical works "were popular largely because Cheyne possessed a superior literary style. . . . [They] appear to have been prepared primarily for the lay reader. Much of the commonplace advice he gives in these works was based upon his own hypochondria, gouty arthritis, and continual struggle with obesity. . . . In this book, he sets forth his philosophy and rules for those who desire to live a long and healthy life" (Heirs of Hippocrates). The chapters are: Of art, Of meat and drink, Of sleeping and watching, Of exercise and quiet, Of our evacuations and their obstructions, Of the passions, and Miscellany observations. Provenance: With the large black and white bookplate of Detroit-based collector Dr. O.O. Fisher. Most recently in the residue of the stock of the F. Thomas Heller bookselling firm (est. ca. 1928).

VAN DER HAGEN, Christiaan
[Leiden, 1724]. [Leiden,, 1724].. Large folio. (55 x 33 cm). Composite atlas comprising 23 engraved mapsheets incorporating two large multi-sheet wall-maps and 6 double-page maps (4 with fine original hand-colour with a separate letterpress title and key pasted to bottom), title leaves of the large map somewhat browned, upper joint weak, blind tooled vellum with rules and ornamental centre piece with arabesques, gilt, small split at headband, spine in 10 compartments with raised bands, gilt. A fine composite atlas of maps and views of the city of Leiden, with Hagen's famous wall-maps, both large and small and both complete. It incorporates Leiden's administrative structure in beautiful, strong contemporary hand-colour. The large wall-map, issued in 1670, is engraved on 10 double-page and 4 full-page mapsheets, while the small wall-map, issued five years later, is printed on 3 double-page mapsheets. Both maps include lovely engraved views of the city, especially the 9 larger views of the 1670 map. Very interestingly, the atlas, compiled in the early 18th century, includes five separate versions of the small map: one complete with the title and the views, and four focusing only on the plan of the city, all four coloured by hand to make visible various aspects of the city. With some paper slips and other letterpress titles pasted on the engraved sheets, these four versions show: the extensions of the town, the Fire Brigade quarters, the division of the town in the eight companies of the citizen's militia and the town quarters. The atlas gives therefore a unique insight in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, René
Robert Marc d'Espilly, Paris, 1724. Volume I and II, complete, leather bound with gold titles and 18 folded tables which reminds those of the Enciclopedy. The first edition of this capital work was published by Jan Maire, Leiden (1637) Following the Discours, now celebrated as one of the canonical texts of Western philosophy, plus two Essays of epoch-making importance. (Cajori, History of Mathematics, p. 174), designated by John Stuart Mill as the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences. It rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics (Hall, Nature and nature's laws (1970), p. 91). The first of the Essais, La Dioptrique, contains Descartes discovery of Snell's law of refraction of light (earlier than Snell); the second, Les Météores, contains Descartes explanation of the rainbow, based on the optical theories developed in the first Essai. It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast. His application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science. His statement of the elementary laws of matter and movement in the physical universe, the theory of vortices, and many other speculations threw light on every branch of science from optics to biology. Not least may be remarked his discussion of Harvey's discovery of the circulation of blood, the first mention of it by a prominent … [Click Below for Full Description]

GODFREY [-HANCKWITZ], Ambrose.
FIRST EDITION. This work is an exposition of the method invented by Godfrey to extinguish fires by exploding gunpowder inside a barrel of water "impregnated with a certain preparation, an enemy to fire", and not simply water alone. This method of extinguishing fires by suffocation is currently used to great effect on burning oil-wells and similar fires. A description of the device itself is followed by directions for its application. On pp. 4-6 Godfrey reports on two highly successful full-sized demonstrations of his invention in 1723, at the first of which several members of the Royal Society were present. The last section consists of accusations against Charles Povey of Hempstead whose design of a "watch engine" was purportedly stolen from Godfrey. This section was omitted from the second edition, published in 1743. Ambrose Godfrey-Hanckwitz (1660-1741), originally from Germany, was for many years employed as operator in the laboratory of Robert Boyle. In 1729 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He later set up his own laboratory where he made and sold the white phosphorous for which he became famous. In the introduction to the present book he expresses his indebtedness to Boyle "for the first hints of the matter whence it was made." Apart from a paper on phosphorous in the Phil. Trans., this work was Godfrey's only publication, and is extremely rare. Neville I, p. 537. Partington II, p. 543. Not in Cole.

Whilst Blaeu's landmark atlas of 1654 had been a great success it was not only seventy years out of date but primarily something for the library, and it was therefore an appropriate time to publish a new and relatively portable work. By February 1723 Warburton was able to announce the progress of the surveys and the acceptance of over 300 subscribers for their coats-of-arms to be inserted on the map. A further announcement on 2nd November 1723 stated that the surveyor Paylor Smyth had completed his survey, though it was over a year before Warburton was able to announce the publication of the map which now included "in the margin 724 Coats of Arms, belonging to the Families that have Seats … [Click Below for Full Description]

François Joseph Lagrange-Chancel
The Hague / A La Haye: Chez Chrles Le Vier. Condition: Very Good. First printing, 1724. 8vo, bound in full later 18th century maroon morocco gilt, with leather bookplate of well known American book collector Robert Hoe, whose collection was sold at auction in 1912, pp. (8) 157 (3), a number of small vignette copperplates. Very good clean copy. Lagrange-Chancel was heralded as a dramatist who would be a worthy successor to Racinet, when he published a series of odes called the Philippiques in 1720, accusing Philip the Duke of Orleans of terrible crimes including incest with his own daughter. Consequently he was thrown into jail, and it was while he was incarcerated that the current volume was published. He escaped, heading to Spain, Sardinia and Italy, only returning to France upon the death of the duke. His literary career never recovered. The catalogue of Robert Hoe's library features a number of books by LaGrange-Chancel but notably not this title. [Attributes: First Edition]

BUDGEN, Richard
London, 1724. DescriptionSurveyed by Richard Budgen and engraved by John Senex on six sheets, three of 660 x 495 mm, and three of 335 x 495 mm, on a scale of 3/4 inch to 1 mile and published in original outline colour by H. Lintot in London in c1730, the second edition. Bound in half calf, folio. A few minor imperfections otherwise an excellent example of this extremely rare survey. NotesOne of the outstanding county surveys of the early eighteenth century, an important and influential period in English regional cartography, despite the criticism of the noted antiquarian Richard Gough, who censured the map as "either correct nor well executed". This however was in 1780 and Yeakell and Gardner had just announced their "Proposals" for their "Great Survey" under the patronage of the influential Duke of Richmond which may well have influenced Gough's view. In spite of its shortcomings the map was a landmark in Sussex history, the first in the county to be oriented to true north and to indicate magnetic variation, the first to have parallels and meridians drawn across the map, the first to rely solely on the statute mile of 1760 yards, after Ogilby's survey of 1675, and the first to show the towns ichnographically. It was engraved on six sheets of different sizes, three full sheets being used for the map with three half-sheets being used for the decorative detail. The latter comprises the title cartouche, the dedication cartouche, prospects of Lewes and Chichester with their ichnography, and the coats-of-arms of sixteen of the local nobility. There are 148 subscribers' arms whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDREAE, Johann Ludwig
Wrtemberg, 1724. Würtemberg,, 1724.. [North equatorial pole to equator WITH;] Coniglobium hoc geminu ad Catalogum Fixaru celeberrimoru accurate delineavit Astrophilisq. primu in hac forma usui dedit. M. Johannes Ludovicus Andrae. Past Wurtembergensis Ao. 1724 [South equatorial pole to equator]. A pair of engraved star charts of the northern and southern hemispheres on a conical projection, joined. Johann Ludwig Andreae (1667-1725) was born in Messtetten, Würtemburg, and followed his priest father into Holy Orders in Tübingen. In 1711, he moved to Esslingen where he began to make globes. His work was part of the early eighteenth century explosion of globemaking in Germany, centred particularly around Nuremburg and makers such as Georg Eimmert and Johann Baptist Homann. He is known to have produced globes of between five and ten inches in diameter, having the construction carried out in the commercial centre of Nuremburg; he also appears to have been assisted in some way by the Rector of the Egidian Gymnasium, Samuel Farber (1657-1716), whose name appears on one globe. On some of his output, presumably as a commercial incentive, Andreae left a blank cartouche to be filled in according to the purchaser's wishes. He was succeeded by his mathematician son Johann Phillipp (c.1700-after 1757). Andreae is only known to have produced two celestial broadsheets; the present charts. They are centred on the equatorial poles using a polar equidistant projection with geocentric orientation. The maps are influenced by Coronelli and could be bent into cones and viewed from the inside to … [Click Below for Full Description]
