The covered wooden bridge on high stilts over the River Malacca joins the fortified old town to the Chinese market, visible in the left foreground and the Muslim mosque, whose tower is just visible behind, along with the Chinese temple beyond and the crowded buildings of native settlement. Dutch galleons and smaller skiffs and boats fill the seas in the foreground. François Joseph Lagrange-Chancel; M. de la Grange (1677-1758); Robert Hoe
The Hague / A La Haye: Chez Chrles Le Vier. First printing, 1724. 8vo, bound in full later 18th century maroon morocco gilt, with leather bookplate of well known American book collector Robert Hoe, whose collection was sold at auction in 1912, pp. (8) 157 (3), a number of small vignette copperplates. Very good clean copy. Lagrange-Chancel was heralded as a dramatist who would be a worthy successor to Racinet, when he published a series of odes called the Philippiques in 1720, accusing Philip the Duke of Orleans of terrible crimes including incest with his own daughter. Consequently he was thrown into jail, and it was while he was incarcerated that the current volume was published. He escaped, heading to Spain, Sardinia and Italy, only returning to France upon the death of the duke. His literary career never recovered. The catalogue of Robert Hoe's library features a number of books by LaGrange-Chancel but notably not this title. Very Good.

[Click Below for Full Description]

SPANISH TRANSATLANTIC FLEET
1724. Manuscript in ink, secretarial hand. Folio. A copy in a clear, legible hand. Extremities of first and last leaves slightly dust-soiled. [6], [1]blank, [1](docket)pp. Madrid, 12 May, The first half of the eighteenth century witnessed a boom in the trade of silver, with Colonial Spanish America producing vast quantities of the commodity. The bulk of the quicksilver required for the amalgamation process came from the mines of Huancavelica, where production only started to decline after 1750. In addition to such resources, the Spanish Empire also exported quicksilver from Spain ? principally Almadén ? to the New World. This manuscript provides an insight into one of the problems posed by transporting the quicksilver across the Atlantic. The anonymous addresser makes an urgent appeal to the Naval Authorities, asking them to take stringent measures to stop foreigners from travelling on board the frigates convoying the cargo-carrying ships. He argues that many of the foreign individuals are without use in the colonies and, upon arrival, desert any duties beneficial to the Empire. At the time it was customary for foreign passengers to mix with the crew and enjoy the privilege of a voyage to the New World, in spite of official vigilance.
