EARLIEST OBTAINABLE LARGE CHART OF THE PHILIPPINES?Lucon of Luconia? Copper engraving from François Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 30,8 x 38,8 cm.Oriented with east at the top, Valentijn?s chart map encompasses Luzon and its associated islands to the immediate south. The chart is filled with rhumb lines, with one decorative compass rose in the waters north of the islands. Sounding depths are included near shore, as are sand banks, shoals, and obstructions. A scale is in the upper left corner. Port cities are also included.Luzon is the main focus of this chart, an appropriate emphasis as it is the largest island in the Philippines archipelago and the most populous. It also contains one of the most important ports in the entire Pacific, Manila, which was part of a cross-oceanic trade route linking Acapulco in New Spain to Manila and the markets of Asia.Luzon has always maintained strong trading and exchange ties with neighbouring islands groups and mainland Asia. The explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521 and nominally claimed the islands for Spain. However, the Spanish exercised no real control until 1565, when Miguel López de Legazpi began the first Spanish settlements near Cebu, here the island is called ?Celo.? The Spanish declared Manila the capital in 1571. When this chart was made, the islands were still under Spanish control, as they would be until 1898.François Valentijn was a prominent historian of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTAIGNE, Michel de
Londres: De l'imprimerie de J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1724. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself." ― Michel de Montaigne, Essays First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller, "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence". Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the 'Essays,' that "Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds outside desperate to get in, and those inside desperate to get out." This 1724 French edition was curiously published in London and includes the first edits by Pierre Cost. According to Tchemerzine, this edition is "one of the most beautiful and best editions of Montaigne!".

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

MONTAIGNE, Michel de
Londres: De l'imprimerie de J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1724. 1724 French Essays of Michel Montaigne France Renaissance Philosophy Humanism"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself." ― Michel de Montaigne, EssaysFirst published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. According to Tchemerzine, this edition is "one of the most beautiful and best editions of Montaigne!"Item number: #9014Price: $750MONTAIGNE, Michel deLes essais : de Michel Seigneur de Montaigne. RARE 18th CENTURY VIEW OF MANILACopper engraving of Manila ?De Stad Manilha?, from François Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 27,5 x 36,3 cm.Manila was one of the most important ports in all of the Pacific. It enjoyed this status for centuries before Europeans came to Southeast and Maritime Asia. The Spanish arrived in the islands, first in 1521 and more permanently in 1565. They took over Manila in 1571, naming it the capital city of their colony, which technically fell under the jurisdiction of the territory of New Spain. It was associated with New Spain and Spanish America because it was the western terminus of the circular Manila-Acapulco trading route. From 1565 to 1815, galleons would leave Acapulco filled with silver. In Manila, this silver would be piped into Asian, particularly Chinese, markets. The galleons were then filled with Asian trade goods and returned to Acapulco. These galleons were the largest wooden ships ever built, and many were made in Cavite, shown on the foreground of the view. The propagation of Roman Catholicism began with the Augustinian friar Andrés de Urdaneta, who accompanied the expedition of 1571. He was followed by Franciscan, Dominican, Jesuit, and other Augustinian priests, who founded churches, convents, and schools. In 1574 Manila was baptized under the authorization of Spain and the Vatican as the ?Distinguished and Ever Loyal City? and became the centre of Catholicism as well as of the Philippines. In 1646 a ser … [Click Below for Full Description]

EARLIEST OBTAINABLE CHART TO SHOW MANILA BAY IN DETAIL?Manilhas Bay?, copper engraving from François Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 30 x 38,5 cm.The chart is oriented northeast, so as to give the bay a vertical orientation. It shows Manila, Cavite (?Cabitta?), the monasteries of St. Lucas and St. Domingo, and a further unnamed monastery around the edges of the circular bay. Manila and Cavite are shown with many buildings in relief.Stippling reveals the ?droogtes?, or dry areas close to the shore. A compass rose sits dramatically in the middle of the bay. Numerous ships are sailing or idling on the water, underlining the importance of Manila as a port.Manila was one of the most important ports in all of the Pacific. Pierre MORTIER (1661 - 1711)
Incisione in rame, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
