[Click Below for Full Description]

Exlibris F. Renard. Rivington, J.Lacy, and J.Stone, 1724 & London: Printed for, and Sold by T.Woodward, [1726 or 1728]. First Edition of both volumes. The most famous and influential book in piratical literature after Exquemelin, considered by Philip Gosse to be the greatest work on pirates ever written. Published during the 'Golden Age of Piracy', it is the prime source for the daring and bloody deeds of the notorious mainly British swashbuckling pirates who sailed the high seas in the early eighteenth century. The engraved plates feature Blackbeard and Bonny and Read. Our copy is without the folding plate of Capt. Bartho. Roberts in Volume I as is the British Library copy. Much of the piratical activity takes place in North America (including Newfoundland) and the West Indies. Volume II, first added in the fourth edition, also contains a description of Magadoxa in Ethiopia partly taken from the journal of Captain Beavis, an account of "the amazing career of the French pirate Misson, who combined practical social reform with his regular profession", and lives of other distinguished members of what may be named the 'Madagascar group'. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAFITAU, Joseph Francois
Paris: Saugrain & Charles Estienne Hocherau, 1724. First. hardcover. very good(-). Illustrated with 43 plates, including the frontispiece and map; some woodcut initials, devices and chapter headers throughout. 2 volumes. Thick 4to, full contemporary calf with gilt spines (quite scuffed and worn; joints cracked but still solid, attractive and generally clean, except for light scattered foxing and the ghost of penciled notations on a handful of the plates). Paris: Saugrain & Charles Estienne Hocherau, 1724. First edition. Overall a very good(-) copy of this rather scarce book. "Comprehensive and meticulous information on the Iroquois and other northern tribes acquired by a long residence among them." Howes L-22. "Lafitau gives very extended and very exact details of the customs, manners and religion of the savages of America... Charlevoix says: "We have nothing so exact upon the subject of which he treats. His parrallel of ancient nations with the American Indians is very ingenious and exhibits as great familiarity with the nations of antiquity in the Old World, as with the aborigines of the new." The author undertook in his lengthy treatise upon the the American Indians, to prove, from the similarity of their customs with those of the ancient nations inhabiting northern and central Asia, that they must be the descendants of emigrants from Tartary... the work is a grand cyclopaedia of Indian history, and customs at that date. The numerous engravings... are finely executed illustrations of aboriginal life and peculiarities." -- Field 850; Sabin 38596; Howes L-22.

MOLL, Herman (1654-1732)
London: "Printed for I. Bowles ... T. Bowles ... P. Overton", 1724. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset view of a codfishery, ten inset maps of various harbors. An early issue of Moll's great "Codfish" map of North America. Herman Moll was, like many an emigré , a zealously patriotic Englishman and cartographical fighter in the globalization contest the European nations conducted from the 15th century into the 20th. Here in one of his superbly characteristic maps of North America, he fights with De L'Isle (the great French mapmaker of the period) about the respective territorial possessions of Britain and France. In contradistinction to De L'Isle's 1718 map, Moll's reduces French Louisiana to a region south of the Ohio River and gives Great Britain Labrador (as New Britain). The achievement of British dominance would be accomplished through trade, colonialization, war and piracy. Depicting one aspect of British success, Moll includes here a rather detailed depiction of the codfishing industry, including the making of cod liver oil. Throughout the 17th century, the British had the greatest number of fishing boats in the Grand Banks. Dried codfish was a staple of the British Navy, and a favorite throughout Europe. As naval supremacy requires good charts, this map has ten inset charts of important North and South America ports: from Boston to Cartagena. And finally, for the benefit perhaps of any would-be British privateer, Moll includes (as he did in his map of the West Indies) detailed information about the annual Spanish convoy that wound around the … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOLL, Herman
London., 1724. Size:330 x 220 mm. Copperplate engraving with later hand colouring. Some discolouration and general toning, however, good overall condition. Herman Moll was originally from Flanders. He moved to London in the late seventeenth century, where he worked firstly as an engraver, then later became a geographer, a publisher and a bookseller. Fer, Nicolas de.
Paris, Danet, 1724. Hand-coloured engraved map (570 x 425 mm). Matted. Scarce map of the Turkish Empire, extending from Asia Minor and the Red Sea to Persia and the Gulf of Ormuz, center of the Arabian Peninsula. This map appeared in a later edition of Nicolas De Fer's Atlas ou Recueil de Cartes Geographiques, first published in 1709. The work was essentially a composite atlas, with maps added and updated over the course of the next 30 years. The present example bears the imprint of Guillaume Danet, De Fer's son in law, who took De Fer's printing house following De Fer's death in 1720, along with his brother, Jacques-Francois Danet. We have located copies of the map dated as early as 1720, so it would appear that the map was not in the earliest editions of De Fer's atlas and may have been prepared as a replacement to a more general map ( L'Empire Des Turcs, En Europe, En Asie, et En Afrique...), published until 1715. - Al Ankary 297. Not in Tibbetts, Al-Qasimi.
