Boston: Printed by B. Green, for Nathaniel Belknap, 1724 Boston: Printed by B. Green, for Nathaniel Belknap, 1724. Rebound in full brown calf. A very good copy, neatly rebacked, with first 14 pages of prelims including frontispiece and title replaced by facsimiles and last two pages of text and advertisement leaf expertly repaired, some wear to hinges, original pages with toning and scattered foxing typical of age. Housed in a custom folding box along with the original boards and photos documenting the restoration process. Overall an attractive copy of this historical volume, well-preserved with the expert repairs. Notably, this copy comes from the personal library of Kenneth Silverman, author of The Life and Times of Cotton Mather (2001). Chiefly a biographer, Professor Kenneth Silverman co-directed the American Civilization program at NYU, and won not only the Pulitzer but also the Bancroft Prize for his work The Life and Times of Cotton Mather. Other notable works of his include biographies of Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel F. B. Morse. A magician himself, he also profiled the life of Harry Houdini.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

VALENTIJN, François.
Dordrecht, Amsterdam, J. van Braam, G. onder de Linden, 1724-1726. Reprint. Franeker, 2002-2004. 5 volumes in 8. Folio. Artificial leather. With 241 portraits, maps, plates and illustrations. One of the most extensive works on the history of the Far East (including Persia), which never can be superseded as many of the documents of which the author made use, do not longer exist. François Valentijn (1666-1727) was a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church who lived for many years on Amboyna and Java. During this period he collected an enormous mass of information, especially in the fields of history, geography and ethnology, concerning all parts of the world where the VOC was active: Indonesia, with large parts on Batavia and the Moluccas, Persia, Malacca, Ceylon, India, Cape of Good Hope, Japan, China and Formosa, etc. The work is profusely illustrated with numerous fine engraved maps, plans, portraits and spectacular views. They are engraved by the best artists of the time like F. Ottens, J.C. Philips, G. Schouten, J. Goeree etc. mostly after designs by M. Balen. Apart from the fine engravings the work is of particular interest for its cartography. It contains interesting maps of Australia, probably drawn after manuscript maps now lost. For his descriptions of the natural history of Amboyna Valentijn used i.a. the unpublished 'Amboinsch Dierboek' by the famous naturalist Rumphius, of which the original manuscript has been lost. Döderlein, Johann Alexander
Nürnberg: J. E. Adelbulner für W. M. Endter Erben, 1724. Small quarto (24 × 15 cm). Contemporary colored-paper over boards; 142 pp. Folded engraving, measuring 50 × 42 cm, tipped in. Two private book plates; earlier signature to p. 133. Lower spine worn; binding lightly shaken, but still intact and internally very good. The first Western monograph on a Russian artwork, the hagiographic icon of Theodor Stratilates, housed at the church in Kalbensteinberg, Germany. Long attributed to Novgorod-era masters, the icon is now generally thought to be from the Pskov region, though its exact origin remains unclear: "Die Theodorus-Ikone aus dem Pskower Kunstkreis wurde zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts geschaffen. The large engraving of the icon shows the saint at the center, surrounded by twelve scenes from his life, which are explained by Döderlein, who interprets not only its iconography, but transcribes and translates the Slavonic inscriptions. Praising Peter the Great and Russia's new-found fame abroad, he notes that the Empire's earlier obscurity made him doubt that a Russian icon could be located in a German church at all. Ultimately, Döderlein achieves a remarkable feat of inter-cultural mediation: his work not only educates German readers about Russian art and religion, but makes the foreign icon useful for spiritual contemplation by local par … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
