SEVERINO, Marcus Aurelius
1724. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Marcus Aurelius Severino was a 17th-century Italian surgeon who published a number of works on human anatomy and surgical procedures. His works covered reports on dysentery, burns, lithotomy, carcinomas, gangrene, skull fractures, and his means of treating these injuries and diseases. One of Severino's most notable works, however, was his work dedicated to the identifying and treating abscesses. This work, 'de Recondita Abscessuum' includes 15 black and white illustrations depicting these lesions, tumors, and skin growths. Severino was a proponent of acting quickly on opening abscesses to decrease the chance of the lesion maturing and emphasized the use of hot irons as a matter of treatment. [Attributes: First Edition]

François Joseph Lagrange-Chancel
The Hague / A La Haye: Chez Chrles Le Vier. Condition: Very Good. First printing, 1724. 8vo, bound in full later 18th century maroon morocco gilt, with leather bookplate of well known American book collector Robert Hoe, whose collection was sold at auction in 1912, pp. (8) 157 (3), a number of small vignette copperplates. Very good clean copy. Lagrange-Chancel was heralded as a dramatist who would be a worthy successor to Racinet, when he published a series of odes called the Philippiques in 1720, accusing Philip the Duke of Orleans of terrible crimes including incest with his own daughter. Consequently he was thrown into jail, and it was while he was incarcerated that the current volume was published. He escaped, heading to Spain, Sardinia and Italy, only returning to France upon the death of the duke. His literary career never recovered. The catalogue of Robert Hoe's library features a number of books by LaGrange-Chancel but notably not this title. [Attributes: First Edition]

Second edition. First published in 1641 in Cambridge under the title Warme Beere, this is the scarce second edition of this treatise; two further editions followed in 1725 and 1741. The work proposes the case that cold beer is detrimental to health, but that warm beer is beneficial and indeed therapeutic, stating that, 'according to the rules of physick, drink is used for three purposes. First to allay our thirst; secondly to intermingle with our food; thirdly to be the vehiculum and carrier of nourishment into the universal body' (p. 2). The effects of hot and cold drinks including wine, tea, and beer, are variously considered and discussed with regard to gout, the liver and kidneys, the stomach and digestion, the blood, the nervous system, and numerous ailments, and the author bases his arguments on ancient and contemporary authorities, citing Galen, Aristotle, and Plato, supplemented by more modern ones, including Nicolas Monardes, Arnoldus de Villa Nova, Marsilio Ficino, and Giovanni Pietro Maffei. Although the first three editions are anonymous, the prefaces are signed 'F.W.'; the fourth edition has a dedication to the eminent physician Richard Mead, si … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg.
